1. TOPIC: Microsoft Silverlight SPEAKER: DARYL SILAO DATE: JUNE 17, 2011 PLACE: ENGINEERING CONFERENCE HALL

Daryl Silao who is a Microsoft student partner discuss to us the features of Microsoft Silverlight. Microsoft Silverlight is an application framework for writing and running rich internet applications, with features and purposes similar to those of Adobe Flash. He centered his talk on Microsoft Silverlight’s Deep Zoom. I’m really amazed because the Deep Zoom can zoom a particular image without destroying its quality and also enables the display of thousands of items simultaneously. I learned that Deep Zoom is also capable of implanting image to another image. Another good thing to Mircrosoft Silverlight is that it can be run on Mac or Windows because it is cross platform software. I think the only disadvantage of Microsoft Silverlight is that compared to Windows Presentation Foundation you get no hardware acceleration and no 3D.

2. TOPIC: Expression Blend 4 and Visual Studio 2010 SPEAKER: ABRAM LIMPIN DATE: JUNE 17, 2011 PLACE: ENGINEERING CONFERENCE HALL Abram Limpin a Microsoft student partner discuss to us Expression Blend 4 and Visual Studio 2010. The two softwares are both for designing GUI (Graphical User Interface) applications and supported by Microsoft Silverlight. He show us many features of the software but the one that caught my attention is that to it supports almost all programming language plus it has a code editor and also a debugger. It speeds up programming because you don’t need to memorize the entire syntax just click the button then the software will code for you. The debugger works both as a source-level debugger and as a machinelevel debugger. The debugger of this software is amazing because you can attach to running processes and monitor and debug those processes. So it is much easier to find errors.

3. TOPIC: Career Growth in Online Gaming SPEAKER: Kail Fajardo DATE: AUGUST 24, 2011 PLACE: ENGINEERING CONFERENCE HALL When I first heard about the topic I was so excited because I love Online Games. Kail Fajardo working at Cubizone Inc. discusses the different positions in a gaming company and task of each position. I learned that gaming company is compose of script writer, game publisher and graphics designers. The script writer is the one who writes the story line of the game. For a game to be released on public it must be undergo in many phases like opening beta and closing beta. The talk was good because he show us some video clip wherein they implement animations to the game. I realized that game development is hard because you really need a good concept and storyline of the game and creative thinking of how will it look like. The relationship between IT and game development is that the IT are the ones who implement the movement of the characters, environment and motion.

4. TOPIC: Kinect Technologies SPEAKER: Victor Tanedo DATE: AUGUST 24, 2011 PLACE: ENGINEERING CONFERENCE HALL At first I thought that a Kinect is just a gaming console like PS3 and Wii but I learned that it can also be use for video conferencing and to create stereoscopic 3D images with Kinect . Mr. Victor Tanedo discuss to us what a Kinect is compose of a sensor a horizontal bar connected to a small base with

a motorized pivot and is designed to be positioned lengthwise above or below the video display. The device features an RGB camera, depth sensor
and multi-array microphone running proprietary software, which provide full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition and voice recognition capabilities. This is the reason why the Kinect is use not only for gaming but for other purposes also. I think Kinect is also a good candidate for a thesis project because it can be modified because there’s a USB port and its sensor and microphone are a powerful tool in developing new devices.

5. TOPIC: Artificial Intelligence Seminar DATE: September 2, 2011 PLACE: ENGINEERING CONFERENCE HALL I learned that our technology is advancing because Artificial Intelligence now are implemented everywhere computer, home appliance and other things. He also discusses how Artificial Intelligence can help human life. In military Artificial Intelligence robot is also used to help soldiers in their mission. The setback of Artificial Intelligence is that they don’t have the decisions made all their decisions are only programmed. So in result Artificial Intelligence can never replace human beings but can be used to help humans. I think Artificial Intelligence must not make decisions on its own there must always a human intervention to guide and restrict it.

6. TOPIC: Emphatic Computing Seminar DATE: September 2, 2011 PLACE: ENGINEERING CONFERENCE HALL This is a cool topic and also a good candidate for a thesis project. Because Emphatic Computing uses Nanotechnology which has a camera and image analysis software, It can observe a user's body language and, with proper programming and computing data inputs it can accurately interpret a person's posture, restlessness and various facial expressions like grimacing, smiling or scowling. This can be use in interrogating, Psychology and even in Medicine. It can also know a certain people’s mood using input it receives based on body language, voice tone and facial expressions and that it will be programmed to adjust itself by providing images designed to provide a feeling of comfort and serenity.

7. TOPIC: MSI Overclocking SPEAKER: Gil Navaro DATE: September 21, 2011 PLACE: Engineering AVR

This is a very interesting topic because Overclocking not only boost your computer hardware it also saves you from upgrading computer hardware. Overclocking is the process of running a computer component at a higher clock rate. I was shocked when I saw the video of the speaker because the computer hardware really boost its performance. The disadvantage of this is that your computer hardware might overheat or worse burn. Overclocking is really dangerous because it forces your computer hardware to its limit but on the good side it saves you money from upgrading computer parts and your outdated computer hardware can keep pace with the new ones. Mr. Gil Navaro said in order not to damage or burn your computer hardware you must either put a fan on every computer parts (RAM, video card etc.) you overclocked or use a Liquid Nitrogen to cool the overclocked parts.

8. TOPIC: Linux Certification, Affective Computing, R&D in the Philippines. The Re(Production) of Creative Writing During the Age of Computers, Volunteering for Education in a Socially connected world, Mobile Game Development, Accer Technologies, Java & Android Development, Gov 2.0, IT skills standards, Careers in FOSS, Grand Challenges in Computing, Significance of IT to NGO and 365 Philippines. DATE: September 23, 2011 PLACE: University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City In this seminar there are many topics discussed but the one that that caught my attention is the Java & Android Development because as we all know in our present time smart phones today are popular so I think developing application to this devices will be good. The speaker was good because she even gives us ideas on what to develop like the one that when you are in a place you can use your smart phone software to know if that certain place has an event or celebration. There’s also a speaker wherein he discusses the Open Source application or OS like Ubuntu. I learned that open source can save you a lot of money because using it will not require you any license. When you use license software it can be costly because when they upgrade to a new version it is a mandatory that you upgrade too while in Open Source you are free to use their any of their software.
