Kitchen
Essentials
for a Stress-Free Holiday
By Joanne DiMaggio
The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the
holiday season when families and friends gather to share time-
honored recipes. Wouldn’t it be the best gift of all to have all
the essentials you need in your kitchen to make the most out of
everything coming out of your kitchen?

he kitchen is the
heart of the home,
especially during
the holiday season
when families and
friends gather to
share time-hon-
ored recipes. Wouldn’t it be the best
gift of all to have all the essentials
you need in your kitchen to make the
most out of everything coming out of
your kitchen?
Marta Tice, a certifed interior de-
signer and a professional member of
the American Society of Interior De-
signers, and whose Home Improve-
ment column will debut in Decem-
ber, answered that question. Here
are her top ten suggestions for ways
homeowners can improve their kitch-
ens and make the holidays less stress-
ful and more enjoyable.
New
GarbaGe
Disposal
Great for the environment and a
huge time saver, disposals grind up
and fush food particles down your
pipes, thereby lessening the amount
of garbage you accumulate each day.
Garbage disposal units come in two
basic forms—batch feed and continu-
ous. Batch-feed models operate only
when the disposal lid is engaged. Con-
tinuous models turn on with the fick
of a switch and run until you turn the
switch off. Neither is completely si-
lent, but models with larger cases are
often better insulated and quieter.
“You will have to have a plumber
install it and if you do not have a
switch already there, you’ll have to
hire an electrician,” says Tice. “Typi-
cally you do not use garbage dispos-
als where you have a septic feld, but
for the city where you are renovat-
ing older homes, most kitchens al-
ready have a garbage disposal so it
shouldn’t be a problem. My tip for
anyone using a disposal is to not put
in corncobs, eggshells or food that is
not biodegradable. If you use it con-
servatively you will preserve the life
of the disposal. Just make sure you
buy a name brand and get one with
a warranty.”
Danielle Morris, Showroom Con-
sultant at Ferguson Enterprises, Inc.
said that Insinkerator offers a model
specifcally for septic systems. “With
each run, it injects a small amount of
enzyme that helps break down food
waste even more.”
New
Dishwasher
The average life of a dishwasher is
10-13 years, so if yours was purchased
before 1998, it’s time to get a new
one. If you’re replacing one, be sure
to measure the space accurately as the
right size and ft are essential. Also,
check to see how they are mounted,
as models that are attached to the
underside of countertops don’t work
well with granite, quartz and con-
crete counters. In that case, you’ll
need dishwashers that mount to the
side of the cabinets.
If you are going to match your oth-
er appliances, make sure the colors
are the same. White is easy, but some
stainless models may not match your
other stainless appliances. Energy
Star-qualifed models use 31 percent
less energy and 33 percent less water
than conventional machines.
“There are so many new options
for dishwashers,” said Tice. “There
are even double-drawer dishwashers

for people who only want to wash
glasses. Some of the dishwashers are
raised higher for people with bad
backs, which is ideal for aging in
place. Also dishwashers with a stain-
less interior have less corroding and
less rust and typically last longer.
The key for buying any appliance is
to make sure you buy it from a dealer
that is reputable with a warranty and
a good service department.”
Morris added that dishwashers
with a stainless interior are also qui-
eter, retain heat better and dry better.
UpGraDe
to Gas or
DUal FUel
Gas or electric? Morris says there
is something to be said for both. “Gas
is better on the cook top, but electric
is better in the oven, especially for
baking. Dual fuel is the best of both
worlds.”
For homeowners who have gas
lines in their area, it’s a matter of de-
ciding whether to pay to have the gas
line run into the kitchen. Expect to
pay several hundred dollars to have
this done. Also consider that having
the pipe snake up on the outside of
the house can be unsightly, but it can
be camoufaged with siding, thus in-
curring additional cost.
Tice prefers a gas range to electric.
“I have found the food tastes better.
Plus the big advantage with gas is
when your power goes out, you can
cook on a gas top.”
Why gas over electric? Morris says
gas provides much better control, al-
lowing a very low fame to a very high
fame, and it delivers heat instantly.
There is also an advantage to upgrad-
ing to a convection oven.
“Convection moves the air/heat
throughout the oven providing even
cooking on all racks thus cooking
better and tasting better,” said Mor-
ris. “It also cuts down on cooking
temperature and cooking time by ap-
proximately 25 percent.”
If you’re sticking with electric, the
good news is that nearly all-electric
ranges now feature smooth, ceramic
glass cook top designs rather than the
old coil burners. The sealed-burner
designs are relatively easy to clean.
Newer ranges offer more burn-
ers. Many electric cook tops feature
a ffth burner, some used to keep
food warm and others that serve as a
bridge between two other burners for
griddle and roasting pans.
replace
coUNtertops
Tice said if you are happy with the
footprint of your kitchen and just
want to give it a facelift, you have
many options for new countertops—
from granite to soapstone to Formica
to concrete.
“Granite is typically more ex-
pensive but it’s gotten more com-
petitive in pricing, as there are more
companies that have opened in
Charlottesville,” Tice said, “As for
ease of cleaning, if the granite is not
sealed, it can stain (particularly wine)
but that’s typically the lighter granite.
Most people go with darker surfaces.
Granite is extremely durable—unless
you take a hammer to it. Ceramic is
cost-effective, but then you have the
grout joints, that over time, show
stains even if they’re sealed. Another
application that is cost-effective is
granite tiles. There is an epoxy grout
that is used that can be dark so it
doesn’t show the stain. Also you can
use the tiles as a back-splash.”
Morris said an alternative to gran-
ite is quartz. “It is extremely scratch-
resistant, stain-resistant and heat-
resistant as a non-absorbent and
non-porous surface.“

tasks. Installing recessed or track
lights over sinks and food prep areas
are one way; installing under cabinet
lights for better clean up and recipe
reading is another. You can add pen-
dant lights over counters to bring
the light closer to you, or to jazz up
a space, use ambient lighting such as
wall sconces and add dimmer switch-
es to control the ambiance.
“Not only do dimmers create am-
biance, but they save you electricity
and extend the bulb life,” said Mor-
ris. “Just by dimming your lights 10
percent, you save 10 percent in elec-
tricity, and your bulb lasts 2x longer.
And dimming by 50 percent will save
you 40 percent electricity and last
20x longer.”
Morris added that LED lights are
becoming very popular, especially for
under cabinet lighting, and will be
the next big wave.

Floors
One of the most dramatic ways to
improve a kitchen is to replace the
fooring. There are fooring options
for every taste, lifestyle and budget.
While its popularity has dimin-
ished in recent years, vinyl fooring is
still one of the best options for busy
families. They’re easy to clean be-
cause you have very few, if any, seams
that trap dirt. They come in all colors
and patterns and many very cleverly
mimic the look of stone.
“Marmoleum fooring is made of
natural fbers like linseed oil and cot-
ton and has no chemical fumes (off
gassing),” said Tice. “It is extremely
durable and frequently used in com-
mercial applications. It has a longer
life span than vinyl and requires pe-
riodic waxing. It comes in sheets and
tile squares. The bright colors and va-
riety of swirl like patterns make this
product a popular choice.”
For durability, ceramic foors win
top honors. Because they are fred
at a high temperature, they are ex-
tremely hard, durable, and resistant
to stain and moisture. Unglazed ce-
ramic foors take on the earth tone
of their clay mixture, while glazed
ceramic has a glass coating in almost
every color. There are a few things
to consider. “If you drop something
heavy, it will crack the ceramic,” Tice
warns. “Again you have the issue of
the grout staining over time. It’s cold
and it’s hard, so people with arthri-
tis should choose another type of
fooring. However, some people like
the ceramic so much that they opt to
have radiant heat installed under the
tiles. This type of foor is easier to put
in with new construction than dur-
ing a remodel of an older home.”
If you’re looking for a green op-
tion, cork foors ft the bill. Harvested
from tree bark, this sustainable prod-
uct is waterproof and compressible,
making it very comfortable. Most
foors come pre-fnished, but require
resealing every 3-4 years with a natu-
ral wax and polyurethane sealant.
“Cork foors are very popular
now,” said Tice. “They’re very du-
rable, resilient and last a long time.
Even if it chips, the cork goes all the
way through. Typically they’re called
engineered foors where the cork it-
self is on a platform and it’s all one
piece. Therefore there’s no sagging or
buckling underneath. It does fade in
strong sunlight, so if you have a lot of
sun in a kitchen, you will notice that
it will fade quicker by the window,
but it can always be stained again.”
Finally, hardwood fooring is ideal
for an open foor plan where a single
fooring style continues into other
rooms. Kitchen hardwoods are dura-
ble and low-maintenance, and prefn-
ished products are also moisture-re-
sistant. Bamboo, like hardwood, also
is becoming increasingly popular. It’s
tough, durable and sustainable.
reFace
cabiNets
If your kitchen cabinets need up-
dating and you cannot afford having
them replaced, refacing is the best
option. No cabinets are ripped out
and the layout remains the same.
Refacing means replacing the cabi-
net doors, the drawer fronts and the
hardware framework.
While this is something homeown-
ers can tackle on their own, Tice said
there are cabinetmakers in town that
will do the work for you. “I would
make sure the box itself and the
shelving is in good condition,” she
advised. “Sometimes when you reface
the doors you have to make sure the
shelving is new as well. That also will
give you the opportunity to change
out the hardware as well.”

storaGe
An effcient kitchen should have
storage as well and counter space.
Whenever possible, hang it! You can
install shelving units on unused wall
areas, or add narrow shelves to the
insides of cabinet doors (ideal for
spices). Hang your pots from a ceil-
ing-mounted pot rack and put hooks
on the back of your doors for brooms
and mops. “You also can get pullout
trays for pantries or the cabinets to
make it easier to access utensils and
pots and pans and such,” said Tice.
“If you have a small kitchen and you
want more counter space, get a mag-
netic knife holder that goes on the
wall. If you currently have your mi-
crowave on the counter, take one of
your cabinets and convert it into a
microwave shelf.”
bUy
New
cookware
Another inexpensive fx toward a
more-effcient kitchen is new cook-
ware. Today there are ingenious new
methods of cooking foods, including
smokers and time-honored woks.
Roasters have come a long way, too.
Many have built-in racks and non-
stick surfaces for easy cleaning. Fon-
due sets are back in fashion and al-
ways great for entertaining. There is
even a variety of specialty cookware
to steam asparagus to perfection and
stainless chafng dishes for a bril-
liantly set dining room table.

GaDGets
A walk through stores like Crate
& Barrel is a stroll through kitchen
gadget fantasyland. There are so
many really “cool” kitchen toys to
help you every step of the way. There
are neat prep utensils, such as a drip-
less turkey baster; baking tools like
a pie weight chain; cooking utensils
like lid pot clips and fat separators;
serving utensils like turkey lifters;
kitchen helpers like herb scissors and
toast tongs; and every kind of ther-
mometer you can think of, including
digital wine thermometers. They’re
fun, generally inexpensive, and save a
lot of time on an otherwise extremely
busy day.
These ten tips are just a handful of
ideas to make your kitchen more user
friendly and when the cook is happy,
everyone else is too!

Monticola
MONTICOLA (c. 1853) is a member of a very exclusive
club. This fully-renovated pre-Civil War plantation
home sits high on a hill
near the southern tip of
Albemarle County.
The home boasts almost
7,000 square feet,
including a gourmet
kitchen, master suite,
formal double parlor and
billiard room.
Original details, such as
the heart-pine Áoors, 11
working Àreplaces and two
sets of pocket doors, were
all retained during the
renovation process.
The grounds feature a pool and 6 outbuildings. Two
are original: the smokehouse and a larger structure that
could be converted into a studio or guest cottage.
The 102-acre parcel with long stream frontage lends
itself perfectly to equestrian or vineyard use. An
additional 190 acres are also available.
MONTICOLA is part of Albemarle County’s rich history--
let it become part of your history too! It is now
available with 102 acres for $2,995,000.

G
abrielle English frst
took an interest in
early American histo-
ry at the age of 8. She
frst impersonated
Thomas Jefferson’s daughter “Patsy”
at age 15, and today portrays early
Americans full-time at Colonial Wil-
liamsburg. Longtime Charlottesville
resident Mark Belisles was studying
early local history at seminary when
he originated the Jefferson Thanks-
giving Festival in 1994.
“It emerged out of my love for
American history,” Belisles says today.
“I was in the middle of doing my dis-
sertation on the study of Charlottes-
ville’s history.” Out of that emerged a
festival designed “to let the commu-
nity hear its history and its stories in
a way that’s entertaining for all ages;
that makes history come alive as peo-
ple interact with historic characters.”
Friday and Saturday, November 19-
20, Gabrielle, alias Patsy, and Mark,
alias Patsy’s contemporary, pastor
Charles Clay, will join hundreds of
other early American history enthusi-
asts for the 17th annual local festival,
onthe DowntownMall andOmni Ho-
tel. Now known as the Charlottesville
Holiday Tradition, the celebration
consists of three events: the Grand
Illumination on the Downtown Mall
Friday evening, the Holiday Heritage
Parade the next morning, and the Jef-
ferson Thanksgiving Dinner and Ball
that evening at the Omni.
The First Thanksgiving
The frst Thanksgiving celebra-
tion took place in 1621 in Plymouth,
Massachusetts, as the Pilgrims feasted
together with Squanto and other Na-
tive Americans who had taught them
how to cultivate corn and other crops
in the New World. Or at least that’s
what we learned in school. But while
it’s true that Pilgrim Governor Wil-
liam Bradford proclaimed a day of
Thanksgiving in 1621, and another
in 1623, the Pilgrims were probably
not the frst to establish an annual
Thanksgiving tradition. In 1619, Cap-
tain John Woodleefe brought 38 set-
tlers to the Berkeley Hundred in the
Virginia colony, sailing from Bristol,
England on the ship Margaret with
instructions from the owners that
“the day of our ships arrival . . . shall
be yearly and perpetually kept as a day
of Thanksgiving.” A year and 17 days
before the Pilgrims set foot off the
Mayfower, these brand new Virgin-
ians gave thanks.
Thanksgiving Becomes
a Tradition
The Continental Congress is-
sued the frst national thanksgiving
proclamation in 1777, recommend-
ing the colonies follow suit. During
his frst year as governor of Virginia,
Thomas Jefferson’s signed a proc-
lamation at the suggestion of the
Continental Congress to observe a
day of “Thanksgiving and Prayer” on
December 9, 1779. Ten years later, at
the request of Congress, President
George Washington recommended
“a day of public thanksgiving and
prayer, to be observed by acknowl-
edging with grateful hearts the many
and signal favors of Almighty God, es-
pecially by affording them an oppor-
tunity peaceably to establish a form
of government for their safety and
happiness.” Washington set the date
of the frst Thanksgiving for the new
nation as Thursday, November 26,
1789. President John Adams also is-
sued Thanksgiving proclamations, in
1798 and 1799, and President James
Madison issued three, although only
one was acted on.
These early observations only
made offcial what was a common
and religious practice in the 17th and
18th centuries, the setting aside of a
day to thank God for blessings indi-
vidual and communal – and not with
games and pumpkin pie, but with
prayer and fasting.
Not until President Abraham Lin-
coln, in the midst of the Civil War in
1863, proclaimed the fnal Thursday
in November a national Thanksgiv-
ing Day, did the holiday become an
annual national event.
In 1939, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt moved the celebration from
the fourth to the third Thursday of
the month. The idea was to help re-
tailers by lengthening the Christmas
shopping season. The move was not
popular and lasted only two years,
but the holiday shopping season has
been extending backward ever since
and now begins well before Hallow-
een, as every mailman knows. Don’t
blame FDR.
Giving Thanks in Cville
Back on November 29, 1928 Presi-
dent Calvin Coolidge celebrated
Thanksgiving here in Charlottesville,
attending services at the First Baptist
Church on Main Street and eating a
buffet lunch at the Carr’s Hill home
of University of Virginia president
Jefferson
Thanksgiving
Festival:
Giving
Thanks in
Charlottesville
By Ken Wilson
Edwin Alderman. The president and
frst lady then headed to Lambeth
Field for the Virginia-North Carolina
football game, but left after the frst
quarter, sparing the home teamadded
embarrassment when it lost 24-20.
Thanksgiving Day 2010 is Thurs-
day, November 25, but the family holi-
day season begins on Friday November
19 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. with holiday
music, children’s activities, and the
lighting of the community Christmas
tree at Central Place on the Downtown
Mall. The countdown to the Grand
Illumination begins at 5:00 p.m., and
Charlottesville Mayor Dave Norris will
throwthe switch at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, November 20 at 10:00
a.m., the Holiday Heritage Parade
on the Mall will boast 100-some par-
ticipants, including marching bands,
members of animal rescue units, and
festival queens and princesses. Small
foats built over golf carts will com-
memorate Virginia history and heri-
tage, as will the presence of histori-
cal fgures like presidents Jefferson,
Madison and Monroe, and one other
historical fgure, Santa Claus, who
has promised to come by afterward
and stay the afternoon. Horse drawn
carriages will offer rides from noon
to 5:00 p.m. for a small charge.
Saturday evening’s dinner and ball
in the Omni Hotel will be set back in
1801, at the beginning of Jefferson’s
presidency. Dinner ($30) will be at
6:00 p.m., and the ball will follow
at 7:30 p.m. ($5 per person or $15
per family). Costumes are encour-
aged but not required, and diners
will share tables with, and have the
chance to question, a historic char-
acter – presidents Jefferson, Madi-
son, or Monroe, Merriwether Lewis
and William Clark, among them. It
stands to reason that the time-travel-
ing dignitaries may have a few ques-
tions of their own.
Gabrielle English will address the
crowd in character as Martha, “Patsy”
Jefferson, speaking about her role in
her father’s life. Because her moth-
er, also named Martha, died before
Thomas took offce, Patsy was host-
ess and First Lady during her father’s
eight-year term in offce. “Patsy was
very involved with her father, but
there is not a lot said about that,” Ga-
brielle say. “Documentaries leave her
out a great deal. When his wife passed
away, his daughter was always by his
side. Reading his letters, I fnd it fasci-
nating, how close they really were.”
At the ball, the presidents will greet
partiers, and Patsy and the Cuckoo
Assembly Dancers from Louisa will
perform and teach period dances.
The group is named after Louisa’s
Cuckoo Tavern (named for one of
the frst Cuckoo clocks in Virginia),
where in 1781 Jack Jouett began his
famous ride to Monticello to warn of
the approach of British cavalry.
Ball tickets will be available at the
door. Dinner tickets must be pur-
chased in advance, by phone at 434-
978-4466 or at Siips Wine and Cham-
pagne Bar and Bistro on the Mall.
Belisles will be on hand as Charles
Clay, an evangelical pastor to whose
church building fund Jefferson made
monetary contributions. “Clay was
part of the Constitutional ratifca-
tion Convention,” Belisles says. “He
ran for Congress in Virginia and was
a prominent community fgure. I just
love,” he adds, “studying this period
of history.”

ferson Thanksgiving Festival, call

NOTE:
Tickets for the 6:00 pm
dinner must be purchased
by November 15th through
the website or by calling
978-4466 or by going to

T
he task of fnding home
insurance is not one
people look forward to.
Home insurance is not
something the average
person is familiar with so
they routinely rely on their bank for
suggestions onthe minimumamount
of insurance they need. Banks, how-
ever, are looking out for their interest
so using their standards may not be in
your best interest. How much home
insurance you should have and what
type of insurance depends on your
home, possessions, liens, risk level,
and fnancial situation.
You want to cover your home but
how much coverage does it take?
Think, if you had a total loss right
now, how much of a claim payout
will put your life back in order?
Coming up with this magic number
is hard to do and it will take you a
few hours of work to determine. Es-
timate too high and you may be pay-
ing premiums for a policy where you
would never be able to claim the full
amount of the policy, a waste of your
money. Estimate too low and you
may fnd yourself with a total loss
with the payout not enough to cover
your expenses. A short-term fnan-
cial savings on premiums can result
in a large set back in your standard
of living.
To fnd out how much coverage
you need, get out a piece of paper
and a pencil and begin to list items
you want covered with an estimate
of their values. Don’t worry if you
are not sure of the exact value as
that is something you can research.
How much your home is worth de-
pends on how one calculates. Insur-
ance companies will see your home
in two ways and your policy will
outline which method they will use
when evaluating claims. There is
the depreciation approach where the
insurance company will deduct the
value of items of the home such as
a 15 year-old roof with an expected
life of 25 years. The other approach
is replacement cost, which is deter-
mined by the cost to rebuild with
similar materials and workmanship.
If you recently had your home
appraised, then the replacement
calculation will be included in that
paperwork, so just ask your bank
for a copy. New homes are easier to
determine value, as the homeowner
knows how much it cost to build the
home. If the appraisal is old, or if
the house is older, determining the
replacement cost will require some
math. Call local contractors and
ask how much per square foot it
would cost to construct your style
of home and then multiply that
fgure by your home’s square foot-
age. Also, remember that any time
you do a home improvement project
that takes in roughly 5 percent of
your home’s square footage, be sure
to update your policy as your insur-
ance company will not cover claims
for items not on the policy.
There are contents in the home,
which you also will want to cover.
These personal items need to be
added to your coverage. Create an
inventory list by recording model, se-
rial numbers and taking pictures of
these items. If the value is above or
below your policy limits, adjust your
policy accordingly. Get an appraisal
on jewelry and make sure you know
what the maximum your policy cov-
ers. Update your inventory every
year and after any large purchase.
A home warranty is a great en-
hancement to homeowner policy. It
provides repair and/or replacement
for failures due to normal wear and
tear of the major systems and appli-
ances in the home. This is a useful in-
surance to cover for those items that
are hard to predict and budget for.
What if someone trips on your
stairs, falls down, and suffers an in-
jury? Liability insurance covers such
instances and provides you with a
buffer to law suits fled against you;
we do live in a litigation friendly en-
vironment, after all. If the amount
of your liability insurance goes
north of $300,000 you may want to
consider umbrella insurance. Um-
brella insurance, which is designed
to take over when your homeowners
insurance reaches its liability limits,
will cover you on lawsuits on both
your home, auto, and on other ma-
terials and activities associated with
your home ownership.
You want to protect what you
have but you don’t want to pay more
than you should. Shop around and
go to an agent who represents mul-
tiple companies. If you don’t look
at your home insurance today please
do so when it comes time to renew.
Your home is normally your largest
investment so you will want to pro-
tect this golden egg.
