MANAGING REAL TIME DATA

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??

How real time data is used in applications and displayed to users

Data is irrelevant unless it is displayed to a user in an understandable way
One of the most used real time data applications is in GPS
Which we will be focusing on

A simulation of the original design of the GPS space segment, with 24 GPS satellites (4 satellites in each of 6 orbits), showing the evolution of the number of visible satellites from a fixed point (45°N) on earth (considering "visibility" as having direct line of sight).

ITS USES

Car Journeys
Fraud Detection
Tracking Company vehicles

Skiing

USES WITHIN LAW

GPS has become more important in within law enforcement There are able to track stolen goods Track criminals One particular technology that has become of particular use is apples ‘Find my iPhone’ app

ITS USES CONT.

‘There’s No Place Like Home’ GPS Shoes Will Take You Places created by Dominic Wilcox Shoes that will help you find your way home by tapping your feet together The right shoe measures how far (or close) you are to your destination, while the left shoe points you to the direction where you’re supposed to go.

SECURITY ISSUES

Data protection US government have to get court orders to monitor peoples location using GPS over extending periods A lot can be assumed from the location, can even work out peoples habits How much data to you share?

CAN YOU TRUST IT???

• Satellites can only pin-point your location, they have no knowledge of the road that is up to the mapping software • SAT-NAV blunders ‘have caused up to 300,000 accidents’

WHEN REAL-TIME DATA GOES WRONG

• There is a risk of overreacting to real time data • In marketing, ad servers are not designed to manage realtime and can’t cope with this.

TECHY STUFF

HOW DATA IS CAPTURED

ERROR CATCHING: NO SIGNAL

• Even with the overlapping system some areas still have no signal • Computer extrapolates position based on personal previous average speed and average speed of others • Keep giving instructions even when there is no signal

ERROR CATCHING: PROBLEM OF TIME

Gravity alters time according to relativity Satellites run 38 microseconds per day faster This would result in GPS results being off by 14 kilometres perday Therefore Engineers adjusted the satellite clocks so that they would run slower than normal

HOW IT RELATES TO US?

WiFiSlam’s technology is able to locate a user within 8 feet Bought for 2 million by apple

HOW IT RELATES TO US?

Our App will be using GPS to figure out where you are within the 3D map of the Eldon building Points to consider • Via/avoiding routes and rooms • Goes wrong way • If the nearest computer becomes unavailable
