REEL VOICES INFORMATION
Since 2005, the San Diego Asian Film Foundation has presented Reel Voices, a documentary training program for high school students who have a strong interest in learning about the art of digital storytelling, critical film analysis, and gaining technical skills on completing a video project from start to finish. The program targets low-income high school students who may not have access to media arts programs and feel their stories are underrepresented in mainstream media. Students are introduced to the documentary genre and guided through the process of creating a short documentary from inception to completion. The Reel Voices project is an intense, 18-week Students learn Final Cut Pro editing paid summer internship program. Up to ten students are selected to meet twice a week from June through August to attend lectures, travel to film festivals, analyze films, meet artists, write scripts, and complete all stages of production and post-production. Lead instructors are Mike Watson, an award-winning photojournalist, and Akira Chan, a local filmmaker and social activist. Students receive a $500 scholarship for their work, which premieres at the annual San Diego Asian Film Festival in October. The films are also packaged onto a DVD and travels to other film festivals around the country, and are also available free On-Demand on digital cable. PARTNERSHIPS The San Diego Asian Film Foundation partners with another local nonprofit agency, A Reason to Survive (ARTS), for the Reel Voices program. ARTS serves thousands of children and teenagers facing challenges using multiple forms of art. Reel Voices classes will take place at the ARTS facility in Liberty Station. The partnership will allow more students-in-need to participate in Reel Voices, revealing their personal stories and hardships on digital media. OUTCOMES As of 2008, nearly 40 high school students have graduated from the Reel Voices program. At least 15 of them have moved onto film school at UCLA, Long Beach, and Loyola Maramount Universities as a direct result of participating in the Reel Voices program. Each year, the films have traveled to other film festivals around the country including Los Angeles Film Festival, Urban Visionaries, Asian Cinevision, and Human Rights Watch International Film Festival. Reel Voices films have also screen on television in New York City and on cable in San Diego County.

STUDENT QUOTES
“I came away with a greater understanding and appreciation for filmmaking and storytelling. Through my internship, I met some of the most prominent Asian American filmmakers and actors on screen today, and created a film that has screened at major festivals across the country. This internship cemented my passion to become a filmmaker and was one of the major reasons I got into film school.” - Adam Lee, Reel Voices class of 2007 After completing Reel Voices, I realized that we are surrounded by stories everywhere we go...all it takes is a little curiosity to spark the beginning of a film. Reel Voices made my dream to become a filmmaker more realistic and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to tell stories through film." -Harrison Tong, Reel Voices class of 2008 Reel Voices has opened the light to my dark world allowing me to find myself as an individual, giving me the opportunity to use media to communicate my message. This program has been one of the biggest challenges that I had to go through.” - Joska Charles, Reel Voices class of 2008
