Voice and Instruments in the music of Guillaume de
Machaut

The musical history of the renaissance is undoubtfully one of rich
culture and growth. Dubbed the period of rebirth, the renaissance saw the
flourish of science and the arts, music being no exception. Inarguably
Historians have spent countless years studying renaissance music
however, however; many unknown facts still exists surrounding how
instrumentations were used in the 14th century. Despite understanding what
instruments were generally incorporated in his pieces, historians are still
uncertain which instruments are actually used in a specific piece. This is
mainly due to having incomplete manuscripts which includes missing
notation as well as text. This paper will serve to analyze “title of the article”
(your pdf didn’t load), with a focus on the This article focuses primarily on
music of Guillaume de Machaut’s, through a breakdown of the article on
renaissance instrumentation, to further comprehend the style and the points
conveyed as a reader. music. Despite understanding what instrument were
generally incorporate in his pieces, historians are still uncertain which
instruments are actually used in a specific piece. This is mainly due to having
incomplete manuscripts which includes missing notation as well as text.
The thesis presented in the article was very concise and had proper
support to give a convincing argument on the inner intrinsics of Machaut’s

music. Using examples such as how paintings have helped discover which
instruments Machaut used to play his music the article explores Machaut’s
technique of composition through various musical mediums. Established
Machaut was seen as the greatest composer in the 14th century the article
uses induction logic through this fact to link evidence such as paintings
depicting musicians to deduce instruments used in his pieces; so, any
paintings that have musicians on it are most likely playing his piecesin it are
most likely a tribute to Machaut’s work. Without any prior knowledge
regarding Renaissance music as well as Guillaume de Machaut, the reader is
still able to fully understand what the text is trying to convey. This is because
theDictated in a clear and concise manner the author writes in a very clear
manner in termsworks to present relevant and factual information free of
jargon. of what type of information was presented it as well as how it was
presented. However, tThe one problem that seems to occur was the overall
structure of the piece. Generally, an author will first give some background
information to better educate the reader before attempting to convince the
reader;. ConverselyHowever, in this case, it was the opposite. The author
first wrote about different instrumentation that were generally used in a
group followed by an in depth analysis on each instrument.
The introduction was very intriguing as the author used an effective
hook at the beginning of the article. He suggested that the knowledge of
renaissance music is mainly dependant on how the piece of music is
performed. This is a very interesting point because generally the first

recording of a renaissance piece is seen as the original piece. However, it
may not have been analyzed correctly and could be using a completely
different form of instrumentation orand / or played the piece with the wrong
style. This is the main downside to renaissance music as there is very little
information on it, so, it is very hard to distinguish whether the recorded piece
is what the Renaissance composers would have wanted. Despite having an
excellent introduction, the conclusion was rather weak. The article finishes
off with how organs were used in the 14th century and unfortunately does not
reiterate its arguments nor connects back to the fundamental thesis of the
paper, being the instrumentations that were used in this era.

In conclusion, this article presents a very interesting idea and supports
it well with many different examples. The only downside was its overall
structureConversely, the lack of structure and cohesion in the piece detracts
to the overall appeal of the article. However, moreover any readers who are
interested in either Renaissance music or Guillaume de Machaut will find this
a very educationa and interestingl article.
