Objective of facebook:
Necessity is the mother of invention:

Man is a social animal. He communicates with other people with different emotions and
behaviours. For the sake of this purpose he gains the different styles and methods. Facebook is the one
of these method or style to develop the intrection, confidence, awareness among the peoples. He teaches
us how to move and behave in a society.
Basically Facebook is a social website. A social organization moves with a proper way on this
website. It gives the different fecilities and applications for members. It also use for the advertisement of
your product or services.

History and rise of Facebook.

Mark Elliot Zukerberg while studying psychology at Harvard University. He was a keen
computer programmer, He had already developed a number of social-networking websites for
fellow students, including Coursematch, which allowed users to view people taking their degree,
and Facemash, where you could rate people's attractiveness.
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in Dobbs Ferry, New York, into a
comfortable, well-educated family. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, ran a dental practice attached
to the family's home. His mother, Karen, worked as a psychiatrist before the birth of the couple's
four children—Mark, Randi, Donna and Arielle.
After graduating from Exeter in 2002, Zuckerberg enrolled at Harvard University. By his sophomore year
at the ivy league institution, he had developed a reputation as the go-to software developer on campus. It
was at that time that he built a program called CourseMatch, which helped students choose their classes
based on the course selections of other users. He also invented Facemash, which compared the pictures of
two students on campus and allowed users to vote on which one was more attractive. The program
became wildly popular, but was later shut down by the school administration after it was deemed
inappropriate.
Zuckerberg and his friends created a site that allowed users to create their own profiles, upload photos,
and communicate with other users. The group ran the site—first called The Facebook—out of a dorm
room at Harvard until June 2004. After his sophomore year, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to devote
himself to Facebook full time, moving the company to Palo Alto, California.

In 2005, Zuckerberg's enterprise received a huge boost from the venture capital firm Accel
Partners. Accel invested $12.7 million into the network, which at the time was open only to ivy
league students The site then began attracting the interest of other companies, who wanted to
advertize with the popular social hub. Not wanting to sell out, Zuckerberg turned down offers
from companies such as Yahoo! and MTV Networks. Instead, he focused on expanding the site,
opening up his project to outside developers and adding more features.
Zuckerberg seemed to be going nowhere but up, however in 2006, the business mogul faced his
first big hurdle. The creators of Harvard Connection claimed that Zuckerberg stole their idea, and
insisted the software developer needed to pay for their business losses. Zuckerberg maintained
that the ideas were based on two very different types of social networks but, after lawyers
searched Zuckerberg's records, incriminating Instant Messages revealed that Zuckerberg may
have intentionally stolen the intellectual property of Harvard Connection and offered Facebook
users' private information to his friends.
Although an initial settlement of $65 million was reached between the two parties, the legal
dispute over the matter continued well into 2011, after Narendra and the Winklevosses claimed
they were misled in regards to the value of their stock.

Zuckerberg faced yet another personal challenge when the 2009 book The Accidental
Billionaires, by writer Ben Mezrich, hit stores. Mezrich was heavily criticized for his re-telling
of Zuckerberg's story, which used invented scenes, re-imagined dialogue and fictional characters.
Regardless of how true-to-life the story was, Mezrich managed to sell the rights of the tale to
screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and the critically acclaimed film The Social Network received eight
Academy Award nominations.
Zuckerberg objected strongly to the film's narrative, and later told a reporter at The New
Yorker that many of the details in the film were inaccurate.
Yet Zuckerberg and Facebook continued to succeed, in spite of the criticism. Time magazine
named him Person of the Year in 2010, and Vanity Fair placed him at the top of their New
Establishment list. Forbes also ranked Zuckerberg at No. 35—beating out Apple CEO Steve Jobs
—on their Forbes 400 list, estimating his net worth to be $6.9 billion.

Development and philanthropic causes:
1)
Development of Facebook:
Facebook incorporated in the summer of 2004, and the entrepreneur Sean Parker, who had been
informally advising Zuckerberg, became the company's president. In June 2004, Facebook
moved its base of operations to Palo Alto, California. It received its first investment later that
month from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. The company dropped The from its name after
purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005 for $200,000.
Facebook launched a high-school version in September 2005, which Zuckerberg called the next
logical step.At that time, high-school networks required an invitation to join. Facebook later
expanded membership eligibility to employees of several companies, including Apple Inc. and
Microsoft. Facebook was then opened on September 26, 2006, to everyone of age 13 and older
with a valid email address.
On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced that it had purchased a 1.6% share of Facebook for
$240 million, giving Facebook a total implied value of around $15 billion Microsoft's purchase
included rights to place international ads on Facebook. In October 2008, Facebook announced
that it would set up its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. In September 2009,
Facebook said that it had turned cash-flow positive for the first time. In November 2010, based
on SecondMarket Inc., an exchange for shares of privately held companies, Facebook's value
was $41 billion (slightly surpassing eBay's) and it became the third largest U.S. Web company
after Google and Amazon. Facebook has been identified as a possible candidate for an IPO by

2013. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Facebook is looking to raise as much as $10
billion in its IPO.
Traffic to Facebook increased steadily after 2009. More people visited Facebook than Google for
the week ending March 13, 2010.
In March 2011 it was reported that Facebook removes approximately 20,000 profiles from the
site every day for various infractions, including spam, inappropriate content and underage use, as
part of its efforts to boost cyber security.
In early 2011, Facebook announced plans to move to its new headquarters, the former Sun
Microsystems campus in Menlo Park, California.
Release of statistics by DoubleClick showed that Facebook reached one trillion pageviews in the
month of June 2011, making it the most visited Web site in the world. It should however be noted
that Google and some of its selected Web sites are not counted in the DoubleClick rankings.

Philanthropic causes:
Since amassing his sizeable fortune, Zuckerberg has used his millions to fund a variety of
philanthropic causes. The most notable examples came in 2010. In September of that year, he
donated $100 million to save the failing Newark Public Schools system in New Jersey. Then, in
December 2010, Zuckerberg signed the "Giving Pledge", promising to donate at least 50 percent
of his wealth to charity over the course of his lifetime. Other Giving Pledge members
include Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and George Lucas. After his donation, Zuckerberg called on
other young, wealthy entrepreneurs to follow suit. "With a generation of younger folks who have
thrived on the success of their companies, there is a big opportunity for many of us to give back
earlier in our lifetime and see the impact of our philanthropic efforts,

Applications of Facebook:
We will discuss the six popular applications of facebook.

1)

Causes Application:

The Causes Facebook Application allows nonprofits to fundraise via Facebook in a number of ways. Fans can “like”
Pages, watch videos, play games or complete a number of other small tasks, and donations will be made to their
chosen charities. Followers can also opt to donate directly to campaigns they care about via the Causes Application
without ever leaving Facebook. With 2.3 million active monthly users, this free application raises awareness for a
cause while donating real money to verified nonprofit organizations.

2)

YouTube Application:

The YouTube application boasts 500,000 active monthly users and gives you complete control of which YouTube
videos are displayed on your Facebook Page. Users can watch, share and comment on your videos from the comfort
of their Facebook account. Sharing recruitment videos, event coverage and campaign collateral with your fans
doesn’t get easier than this.

3)

Involver Twitter Application:

Involver, one of the Web’s most popular social marketing platforms, offers more than 24 applications geared toward
Facebook, Twitter and the iPhone to create a distinctive user experience. Each Facebook account is entitled to two of
their Basic applications free of charge, which can be swapped out at any time. To access more than two at a time,
they offer a professional upgrade. The Twitter application will stream your Twitter feed directly to your Facebook
Page, allowing you the freedom to customize its look and feel. Instantly two of your most important handles are
accessible from one website, expanding your followers and encouraging conversation across platforms.

4)

Wildfire application:

The Wildfire app helps you advertise with campaigns that are visible to everyone who interacts with them. The userfriendly software helps you develop a promotional campaign such as a contest or giveaway and post it on various
social networks as well as on your website. Every time a user interacts with your campaign, it will appear on his or
her news feed. His or her friends will want to check it out, and hopefully, your campaign, your brand, and your sales
will spread like wildfire.

5)

Facebook Mobile Application:

One of the most popular online activities is social networking. For example,Opera has released statistics that show
Facebook and MySpace are two of the top five destinations for U.S. web users of their Opera Mini product.

And its only getting more popular by the minute. Both MySpace and Facebook have developed applications for the
iPhone -- argued to be the most web-friendly mobile device to date -- designed to push usage further than ever
before.
But not just the iPhone; there are Facebook applications for Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and BlackBerries; with a
very high usage rate being totuted for the application on all of those platforms.

1)
Facebook for the iPhone:

Last year, official applications for the iPhone were mainly web applications -- websites that had utilized complex
scripting called AJAX to make the web page feel like a native application even though it was not. Facebook was one
of the more popular one of these for the iPhone and had gathered a huge following. With the release of the iPhone
Software Developer's Kit (SDK), it only made sense that Facebook would move to becoming a native application,
and adding a few new features along the way.
Facebook for iPhone is available via the iTunes AppStore. This can be accessed on iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod
touch devices that have been updated to iPhone 2.0 or by using iTunes 7.7 on a computer.

2)

Facebook for Windows Mobile:

Facebook for Windows Mobile takes a similar angle to the
native iPhoneFacebook application. Macrospecs, Inc. has created an
application called FriendMobilizer. This doesn't integrate into the Contacts
application, but it does provide a center for interacting with Facebook
contacts from the mobile device without visiting the Facebook website.
This application works for both Windows Mobile Standard (non-touchscreen) and Professional (touchscreen)
devices. It is free, and can be downloaded from the FriendMobilizer website.

6)

video call application: facebook+skype

At last, Facebook released its newest feature, Facebook Video Call. Worked together with Skype, now
Facebook is available for you to communicate usingVideo Chat service just like Video Calls or Video
Conference on Skype. Actually, this video chat rumor have been heard from a year ago, but now finally
this feature is available for all Facebook user all around the world.
The cooperation between Facebook and Skype doesn’t make the Facebook users to have or to make Skype account
to make a video call to their friends. And also, Facebook users don’t need to install any additional application to use
this video chat, all they have to do is to just install a plug-in on Facebook, since this video calling feature is browserbased and users can simply use it.
Facebook’s video chat feature also supports multiple users video call (Group Video Chat), but Skype will give an
extra payment for this. However, it’s completely free if you chat with just only a friend.

Features of Facebook:
Here we will discuss the seven important features of Facebook.
1)

Facebook chat:

On April 5, 2008, Facebook pre-released Facebook Chat. As of April 23, 2008, Facebook Chat
was released to the entire Facebook user base. Users may chat with their Facebook friends on a
one-to-one basis, or a user may chat with multiple friends simultaneously through the groups
feature. Facebook Chat can also be run on the desktop using Gabtastik, a dedicated web chat
browser. Facebook Chat can also be run on the iPhone using Facebook Chat for iPhone app.
Facebook also released the official app for iPad. Facebook chat is also available to use for
Blackberry users via the Blackberry Facebook app.

2)
Facebook message and inbox:

Since the website's founding, it has allowed users to send messages to each other. A Facebook
user can send a message to any number of his/her friends at a time. Deleting a message from
one's inbox does not delete it from the inbox of other users, thus disabling a sender to redo a
message sent by him or her.
On November 15, 2010, Facebook announced a new "Facebook Messages" service. In a media
event that day, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "It's true that people will be able to have a
@facebook.com email addresses, but it's not email." The launch of such a feature had been
anticipated for some time before the announcement, with some calling it a "Gmail killer." The
system, to be available to all of the website's users, combines text messaging, instant messaging,
emails, and regular messages, and will include privacy settings similar to those of other
Facebook services.

3)
Facebook friends:

To "Friend" means "to send a friend request on Facebook." It is possible in Facebook's friend
settings to remove someone from the Friend status, which is referred to as "Unfriend" by
Facebook or also "De-Friend". "Unfriend" was New Oxford American Dictionary's word of the
year in 2009.
Facebook profiles may be set by a user to greatly restrict access to those users who are not
"friends," for example, blocking access to photos of that person and contact information. After a
person accepts a friend request, the new "friend" then has much greater access to that person's
profile information.

4)
Facebook like and comment:

The appearance of the "Like" button.
Users of Facebook can "like" status updates, comments, photos, and links posted by their
Facebook friends and other users, as well as adverts, by clicking a link at the bottom of the post
or content. This makes the content appear in their friends' News feeds. Facebook says "Liking" is
intended to "Give positive feedback and connect with things you care about".

A "Like Button" is also available for use on websites outside Facebook: "When the user clicks
the Like button on [a] site, a story appears in the user's friends' News Feed with a link back to
[the] website." At the same time when any visitor, including non Facebook members and logged
out users, visit a site with the Like Button, their presence on the site is recorded by Facebook.
Introduced in April 2010, by September 2010 over 350,000 sites had installed it. A "Like Box"
also allows Facebook page owners to see how many users and which of their friends like the
page. From the end of 2010 and in the US, Microsoft's Bing search engine identifies which links
in the results have been "Liked" by the searcher's Facebook friends.

5)
Facebook notification:

Notifications of the more important events, for example, someone sharing a link on the user's
wall or commenting on a post the user previously commented on, briefly appear for a few
seconds in the bottom left as a popup message (if the user is online), and a red counter is updated
on the toolbar at the top, thus allowing the user to keep track of all the most recent notifications.

6)
Facebook poke:

The poke feature is intended to be a poke
gesture (similar to "nudge" in instant
messaging) to attract the attention of another
user. Many Facebook users use this feature to
attract attention or say "hello" to their friends. A previous version of Facebook's FAQ gave
additional insight into the origin of the feature, stating: "When we created the poke, we thought it
would be cool to have a feature without any specific purpose. People interpret the poke in many
different ways, and we encourage you to come up with your own meanings." Mark Zuckerberg
during a live Facebook webinar.

7)
Facebook groups and pages:

Facebook allows different networks and groups which many users can join. It also allows privacy
settings on basis of networks. Groups are used for discussions, events, etc. and are a way of
enabling a number of people to come together online to share information and discuss specific
subjects. They are increasingly used by clubs, companies and public sector organizations to
engage with stakeholders - be they members of the public, employees, members, service users,
shareholders or customers. A group includes but is not limited to the following: the members
who have joined, recent news contents, wall contents, photos, posted items, videos and all
associated comments of such items. In this respect, groups are similar to "Like pages" (below)
but contain a different set of features. Groups are limited to 300 groups per Facebook customer.

10)

Az a killer:
Facebook is a boredom killer.

The Point I am trying to make is “Facebook is a gift if you use it in the right way otherwise it will indeed
be an enemy”. So let’s use it wisely.

Disadvantages of facebook:

1)
Time consuming:
Most people find after becoming a Facebook member that interaction tends to become time
consuming. If you are hard-pressed for time, it's important to set time limits for yourself or you'll
likely find it's highly possible to lose valuable time that could have been more productive
elsewhere.
The time consuming aspect of Facebook doesn't have to be a problem as long as you don't let it
and stay in control.

2)
Facebook addiction:
Some people find once they've become immersed in the Facebook culture they become addicted.
Depending on your perspective, spending too much time on a single website with nothing else to
show at the end of the day may be a huge disadvantage.
Many find once they log into Facebook and begin poking around profiles, walls, groups,
applications and the plethora of other activities Facebook offers, hours have gone by. This can
become a problem in one's personal or professional life if the time spent on Facebook begins to
take hold of one's life.
For those who are prone to log-in constantly all day long to check out what's happening in their
circle of Facebook friends, this may become problematic, especially if feeds are sent to e-mail
and cell phones with new updates that make constant log-ins compulsory.
A Facebook addiction can be construed as a disadvantage because of inordinate amounts of time
spent on the website and self-imposed time limits aren't set. It's important to recognize the
addiction signs so a Facebook membership doesn't become a problem.

3)
Side effects on health:

facebook creats a craz to use the facebook in user’s will; Due to sitting a long time on facebook in a
direction and style the growth of body stoped. Facebook also effects on the mind and emotions of users.
