Man shot when another hunter’s weapon accidentally discharges
Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office A Lexington County man was taken to Palmetto Health Richland after he was shot during a hunting trip Friday. Part of a party of at least five hunters, the 51-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the upper thigh when a hunting partner’s weapon discharged. Deputies made contact with the party in a Neeses parking lot about 8 p.m. The group said they had been hunting on some land in Norway. The man was bleeding heavily in spite of a tourniquet the group had bound around his leg. The victim said they had ended their hunt and everyone was unloading their weapons of ammunition. However, when a 24-year-old woman was trying to clear her weapon, it went off, striking the victim in the thigh. Each member of the hunting party, including the victim, said the shooting was accidental. EMS crews on scene determined that since the man had no exit wound, he should be airlifted from the Piggly Wiggly parking lot to a Columbia hospital. The 25-06 caliber rifle and investigative material will be turned over to the Department of Natural Resources for a final determination in the case.

25-year-old man killed when car hits tree
A 25-year-old man died early today when his car hit a tree west of Georgetown, state police said. The victim was identified as Bryan P. Schieferstein of Millsboro. The accident happened about 6:15 a.m. at Cokesbury Road and Seashore Highway (Del. 18/404). Schieferstein was northbound on Cokesbury Road in a 2012 Kia Soul and failed to stop at the stop sign at Seashore Highway, Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said. He said the Kia continued across Seashore Highway and hit an embankment. “The vehicle was then vaulted into the air before striking a tree head-on. Schieferstein, who was properly restrained and the lone occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene,” Fournier said. The intersection was closed about 3 hours as police investigated
