Leslie Hubilla Media Journalism Radio Review – Revised Carnival Choreographer’s Ball NYC had its 10th anniversary show featuring big name talents and surprise performances but still suffered from the usual downfalls. The show returned to the Highline Ballroom on Monday, November 18th featuring performances across various genres of dance. Some of the featured choreographers’ credits include the Victoria Secret Fashion Show, Step up 2 and 3, Janet Jackson and Beyonce. There was a great turnout despite the overpriced tickets for a standing room only show. Jonte (JOHN-TAY)’s piece was a favorite with high energy and featuring well-known dancers like Danielle Polanco (PUH-LANG-KO) of Beyonce’s choreographic team. Sharaya (SHA-RYE-UH), the Jersey-born up-and-coming rapper, joined in capping off Jonte’s piece with a surprise performance. Even Missy Elliot was in the building. Jermaine Brown’s piece, though a little complex and abstract for the club audience’s taste, was interesting and attention-grabbing. La Jon Dantzler’s (DANSSLER) piece had great moments though I wish he was up there doing the piece himself. Derek Mitchell’s ode to The Book of Mormon was quite enjoyable. It was fun and refreshing and really highlighted his dancers. Short and sweet are the best types of pieces for this kind of show. Even with the few hype and entertaining pieces sprinkled throughout the evening the show dragged on. A late start, no seating, and too few entertaining acts resulted in an early exit from yours truly. The exciting moments were too few and far between. For a mediocre show to go past 1am on a week night is asking a lot of its audience.
