VISION
PAGE THREE

Reconciling Ministries Network envisions a renewed and vibrant wesleyan movement that is biblically and theologically centered in the full inclusion of all god’s children. Reconciling Ministries Network is committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by living out the gospel’s teaching of justice and inclusion.

2008 ANNUAl RePoRt

For better part of 40 years, my life has been shaped by three things: music, church, and words. And for the better part of 40 years, those three strains have been tightly woven together. As a kid, I loved the 15 minutes of every Sunday school hour that was given over to song in my small South Texas church each week and singing around the campfire at summer camp in the Texas Hill Country seemed to me to be the perfect way to end the day. Church was a center point of our family’s life throughout my childhood and youth, and finding a new church home was a priority each time I moved as an adult. I was fortunate as a teenager to have a senior pastor who hosted what was essentially a seminary education for those youth who were interested in spending two hours every Wednesday evening for two years discussing theology, doctrine, and ecclesial history in a setting where

GREETINGS

questions and exploration were encouraged—and homework was assigned! And as an editor, writer, and educator, I work with words on a daily basis and know the power they carry, for good and for ill. One way in which all those strains come together for me is that I tend to pay close attention to words, to make them a part of my internal song if they’re not already set to music and to help them stand alone if they are (i.e., without the melody, do these lyrics have resonance?), and I “hear” theological lessons in songs, essays, novels, and news reports that are not deliberately inclined that way. An example: A new song by one of my favorite musical artists contains the lyric, “When lies become the truth, I run to you.” That secular lyric had immediate resonance for me when I first heard it last week and I found myself reflecting on it. To whom do we run when lies become “the truth”? For 37 years our church has presented as truth the lie of incompatibility, that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.”

“We all belong to God. Keep praying, loving and fighting for the justice that is already yours in Jesus Christ.” –Bishop Mel Talbert
We hear those words repeated at every General Conference and at so many points between. And to that lie, ever-increasing numbers are responding, in truth and with love, that all of God’s creation is of sacred worth; that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight, we are all powerfully and permanently a part of God’s family; and that open hearts, open minds, and open doors must move beyond slogan to reality. Reconciling Ministries Network is a powerful truth in my journey and my evolving relationship with a church that has nurtured, sustained, challenged, caressed, battered, and bruised. At General Conferences and RMN Convocations, and through my service on the RMN board, I have made friends I still treasure and toil beside. From that perspective, I have witnessed RMN speak truth powerfully, prophetically, joyously, and doggedly—across 25 years and more recently, through the unique Called to Witness campaign (see map, pg. 8 ), with its 22 regional organizing trainings building to the powerful, faithful, faith-filled One Family Tree witness at General Conference 2008 in Fort Worth (see photos throughout). I carry with me to this day the truth of two songs from my childhood in that small South Texas church. I carry the memory of Pauline Miracle, a pillar of our church and my godmother, who even after developing dementia that left her unable to remember my name would hold my hand as we sang the words

“Jesus loves me, this I know,” and then invariably say as we finished the song, “And he loves you too, child. He loves you so much.” And I carry the memory of Otheal Zorn, the tiny dynamo who for decades directed the children’s Sunday school program. Almost every Sunday for the eight or so years I was under her charge, she led us in singing the words to her favorite hymn, “Where he leads me I will follow / Where he leads me I will follow / Where he leads me I will follow / I’ll go with him, with him, all the way.” When lies are presented as truth, I remember these truths: Jesus loves me. Jesus loves you. And where he leads me, I can, I will, follow. I follow—and RMN journeys with me. This year we mark 25 years of our reconciling journey and, truth be told, I can’t wait to celebrate with my reconciling family at Estes Park in September!

Called to Witness

“The delegate meeting was an invigorating experience. It felt wonderful to be part of a well-organized group striving for human dignity in a cause that will ultimately prevail.” (North Texas) “The delegates are already strangely affected because they heard individual stories ahead of time and shared their own stories. What an astounding day it has been!” (Delaware)

COMMUNITIES

Reaching twenty-two strategic Annual Conferences (see map), this fledgling program mobilized 501 grassroots volunteers. These volunteers served as missionaries to their General Conference delegates, building relationships, telling their personal stories, and urging delegates to vote for full inclusion at the 2008 General Conference.
