Role of Senior Assistant The role of a senior assistant is divided into two, which are administrative role and also managerial role. According to the Senior Assistant of Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi School, Puan Nik Ainul Amin, the role of a senior assistant includes the academic achievement and the management of the school. On one side, as a senior assistant, one has to make sure that the academic achievement in their school increases and gets better as time goes on. On the other side, the management of the school also needs to be monitored so that it is smooth and proceeds without any problem. Puan Nik Ainul Amin stated that the monitoring of the management is done by helping the principal. This is a part of the managerial role. Being in this profession is what she really loves; she holds this position since 2004 up until today. The academic achievement greatly depends on the commitment of a senior assistant. Without the senior assistant thinking about the strategies and approach needed for the school to get on a higher level, it is believe that the teachers will just follow everything. In order to increase the students’ performance, Puan Nik Ainul Amin will make sure that the teachers carry out extra classes from 8 pm to 10 pm three times in a week and Pn Nik Ainul Amin herself will come and monitor them and the school. This is a part of a senior assistant’s job under the administrative role. Besides that, these extra classes are carried out with the support and approval of other teachers involved. From the interview, we believe that she is really committed to her work and she really meant everything she said. This is proven when all the three teachers that we interviewed after her agreed that she really does everything herself including patrolling and monitoring the school during the extra classes and normal days. There are only certain days where she could not patrol the school when she had some matters to be attended. The teachers praised her as she is willing to discuss any matter involving the school and students with them and not just simply making her own decision. From our observation, Puan Nik Ainul Amin is well respected and the teachers are comfortable with her as she plays her role well. They do not hesitate to compliment her and their answers are same with her.

According to Oxford Advanced Dictionary, teaching is the ideas of a particular person or group, especially about politics, religion or society that are taught to other people. Teaching can be made in different ways but it depends on the teacher and the subject that are going to teach. While learning, according to the Oxford Advanced Dictionary is the process of learning something and knowledge that you get from reading and studying. But every teacher has their own skill in teaching and learning system in order to make their lesson look more attractive and enjoyable for the students to follow. Teachers can come up with a lot of programmes for their student to make them success and achieve the goal that the teacher target. From our interview, we can see that the Senior Assistant and other teachers discuss together to have a good program for students to join together. They organized nicely according to the month in one year that they want to achieve. The Senior Assistant and other teacher will arrange the program according to the form (PMR, SPM and STPM). As for example, one of the program is Program Maju Diri Form 1 until 5, which held in January. This program usually held in early year because at this time students still freshly come from school holiday, so that in order to catch up their attention in learning, the Senior Assistant made this program. Besides that, this school also has extra class for students in form 3, 5 and 6. In order to attract students to attend the class, the Senior Assistant give idea that every students which had extra class to have a lunch first. So that, she asked school management for have free food and drinking for each students before start the class in the evening session. Furthermore, other teachers also give a good cooperation to make the programmes successful. ‘Program Mentor-Mentee’ for example, give a chance to students learns what is their mistakes, what makes them feel that the subject is hard to score and what way should they use to repair it from repeated again. This MentorMentee program involves teachers and students, which teacher become guidance for students to follow. Sometimes, they also learn how to present the presentation in front of the class without shaking and never afraid. Besides, other program that makes students attracted is ‘Bicara Tokoh’ which this program will call someone that is success in their academic. But sometimes, the school will call someone that is a motivator and can be a good model for the students. ‘Majlis Anugerah Cemerlang’ is one of the programs which can make students compete with each other and

teachers can know the level of their students at that time. The other program that the Senior Assistant suggests is ‘Program Skor Cemerlang PMR and SPM. For PMR students, they will call is as ‘PMR EKSEKUTIF’ which certain class who got a low mark in any major subject, have to repeated again until they achieve the score that are fixed by the teachers. Same as SPM, which they call as ‘SPM ELIT’. The purpose of this program is to make that student achieve the goal set by the teacher and the subject also compulsory to past for enter the university level. Besides that, ‘Program Pos PMR or Membaca 1 Malaysia’ encourage students to read and read as well as make them realize that is important to read and know how to read in appropriate way. When we ask the Senior Assistant what she did when she got extra time and she answered that she like to walk around the school, see the class position; either the teacher in the class or not. If the teacher is not in the class, she will write it in the record book so that the teacher knew what time he or she is not in the class and why? They will explain later their reason to the Senior Assistant as they knew they are wrong. As for conclusion, we can say that the Senior Assistant play important roles to move the organizational of the school. Teachers also play important role models for their students because students think that teachers are their mirror in the school. What a good thing teachers did, will give a big impact to the students. Motivation Self Efficacy of the Senior Assistant Self Efficacy is a construct derived from social cognitive theory. Wood and Bandura (1989) stated that self efficacy refers to belief’s in one’s capabilities to mobilize the motivation. To put simply, Bandura (1986) define self efficacy as: “People’s judgment of their ability to organize and execute courses of action required to attain designated types of performances. It is concerned not with the skills one has but

with the judgments of what one can do with whatever skills one possesses.” (pg 391) Interestingly I have found that pupil enrolment was found to be related to Senior Assistant self efficacy on managing academic success, managing staff, managing pupils affairs, managing school facilities and managing school community affairs. Senior assistant from SMKBBST is someone who is very experienced and knowledgeable. She is highly motivated. Why do I say so? She does the job of a principal by motivating the teachers and the students. Not only has that she also showed the method of teaching and learning process to the teachers. On the other hand, she is also someone who is confident and organized. I can see this during our interview section with her and the way she organized the school activities and even the school management is very organize. Only person who is highly motivated, confident, and organized can have a good self efficacy.

Role of Senior Assistant in Motivation the Teachers. According to Wikipedia, Motivation means the activation or energization of goal-oriented behavior. In order to have a happy and motivated school, it is crucial to have happy and motivated teachers and staff. There are so many ways for Senior Assistants to show their appreciation to the teaching staff. Just a small gesture can sometimes be the boost of motivation that the teacher needs in her day. What does SMKBBST Senior Assistant do to motivate her teachers? We do have the answers. Firstly she says that “Been Involved” which means that, she has been the part of the classroom by occasionally coming in to spend quality time with the children and become a role model to the other teachers. To approve the above statement of the senior assistant we have ask about this to some other few teachers. The teachers say, yes! The senior assistant does walk around and for the first time they feel weird about her and they thought she is not good. At last they understand why she does that. Other than that, “Been an effective communicator”. The senior assistant says that she talk to her staff openly and honestly. She also

used to host occasional informal get-togethers in effort to discuss situations and upcoming events. The senior assistant of SMKBBST will make sure that the entire staff is included when holding this type of meeting. If a teacher or staff member is not present for the discussion, she will make sure to meet with him individually afterward. Never leave the responsibility of communication to someone else. Throughout the school year, hold fun-filled contests to encourage the teachers to work for a prize, such as "Best Classroom Decor." Just like the students, when teachers are motivated to win a prize, they will tend to work harder and more efficiently, said the senior assistant. She added, this will boost the teacher’s motivation and will make them to work harder. Not only that, she also Assign fun jobs for the teachers to do in their spare time, such as photography or bulletin board decorating. When you find a teacher's natural talent, use it to give her a temporary break from the daily routine of the classroom. Moreover, she will also make sure that all her teachers to attend trainings and workshop that promote motivation and handson activities. No one wants to sit in a seminar all evening, so she will make sure that the schedule trainings are fun and lively. Last but not least, the senior assistant said that with the approval of the principal she will have an appreciation banquet each year for the teachers and school families. During this the teachers will be acknowledged and accomplished with hand out rewards for a well done job. In conclusion, a senior assistant does play a vital role in motivating teachers as well. All that motivation helps the teachers as the boost and to work more harder. The style of leadership can be varies based on the individual preference. Same goes for her. She has her own technique in combining the variety style of leadership in order to produce a better result in every action taken by her. She has used both autocratic and democratic style in her leadership in a balance manner. As she mention earlier in the interview session, one of her job is to ensure the improvement of the school’s academic achievement. In order to do so, she doesn’t think that democratic is the best way. And that is why she selected several teachers and asks them to conduct programs for PMR and SPM candidates. One of the teacher in the school, Pn. Norlida claims that the Senior Assistant herself will prepare all the material that will be used in a particular program and give them to the respective teachers.

Other than that, in order to attain the success of students’ achievement in academic, she also held “mentor-mentee” program where she, on her own, assign group of students from Form 3 and Form 5 for each of the form teacher. Even though the way she handle some academic matters autocratically- -taking no account of other teacher’s opinion- but I think she is actually looking from a different side from other teacher do. As she is in the higher position, she did look the students as a whole and that’s how she can come out with many programs and it is a must for other teacher to obey the instruction and follow. Besides being autocratic in the academic achievement matters, she also sometimes being a democratic person. She suggests that she actually love and prefer to work as a team among the teacher. In discipline cases, for example, there are senior assistant that in charge in the students’ affair, who deal with the disciplinary problems among students in the school but she still involves in the meeting to find the solution or suitable punishment for the problems. It is because, as she mentioned before, she want the teacher to work as a team. According to Pn. Zanira, as Bahasa Melayu teacher, she claims that even though Pn. Nik Ainul Amin has the authority to determine the kind of punishment, yet she still gives the students’ affair to discuss and make a decision. This situation clearly shows that she knows when to actually use the authority she had. Same goes in the selection of head of department. In making such decision, she will held a meeting and get the teacher to fill a form to elect who they think should be the head of each department, and then only she will use her authority to elect the respective teachers. She also uses this kind of technique; held a meeting in the making of the classroom timetable for all teachers. In my opinion, she as a senior assistant have done a great job by combining different style of leadership to suit the situation and when needed. By doing this, I think other teacher will have high respect on her. Furthermore, the way she uses her authority in the leadership also shouldn’t be left out. She stated that she has hold the position as Senior assistant in the school for more than 6 years and that is enough to show how other teachers can work with her and respect her as she

respect other teacher. I also think that she is one of the best teacher in the school because Pn Zainon, one of the teacher in the school once said that Pn Nik Ainul Amin always remind them that they should always sail the ship (the school) in the correct way because they are the sailor. I believe she did a great job as in the senior assistant position because of this inspirational phrase of her. Senior assistant in a school plays a vital role in creating good reputation and academic achievement greatly. Therefore, the role of senior assistant is divided into two which are administrative role as well as managerial role. Under administrative, the role of senior assistant is to make sure that the teachers carry out extra classes at night three times in a week and the senior assistant will come to monitor teachers and students, and the school. Whereas, under managerial, senior assistant’s role is to monitor the management of the school by helping the principal so that it is smooth and proceeds without any problem. In teaching and learning system, senior assistant has come up with a lot of programs and approaches. There is Program Maju Diri for Form 1 until 5, which is held in January, extra classes for students in form 3, 5 and 6, ‘Program MentorMentee’ and ‘Bicara Tokoh’. In order to attract students to attend for their extra classes, senior assistant has suggested to the school management to distribute free food and drinking for each students before start the class in the evening session. The other program that the Senior Assistant suggests is ‘Program Skor Cemerlang PMR and SPM. For PMR students, it is called as ‘PMR EKSEKUTIF’. Meanwhile for SPM, they call as ‘SPM ELIT’. There is also a program that encourages students to read that is ‘Program Pos PMR or Membaca 1 Malaysia’. The role of senior assistant not focuses on administrative, managerial and teaching and learning system but also in motivating teachers and students. In motivate teachers, senior assistant does “Been Involved” as part of the classroom. This will be a role model to the teacher. Furthermore, the senior assistant “Been an effective communicator” in school. Through this, senior assistant will have a good rapport among staffs, teachers and students. Besides that, teachers in SMKBBST hold fun-filled contest such as "Best Classroom Decor.” The winner will get a prize.

Moreover, the senior assistant will ask teachers to attend trainings and workshop that promote motivation and hands-on activities. Last but not least, the school will have an appreciation banquet each year for the teachers and school families. The senior assistant uses various style of leadership. She tends to use both autocratic and democratic style in her leadership in a balance manner. To ensure the improvement of the school’s academic achievement, she doesn’t think that democratic is the best way. The senior assistant uses autocratic style to attain the success of students’ achievement in academic. Sometimes, senior assistant uses democratic way when she held a meeting for the selection of head of department. In order to elect the head of each department, she will ask the teacher to fill the election form. From the interviewed session, we can see that the role of senior assistant is very important in order to bring up the school reputation and academic achievement greatly.
