Bihar state depends 90% on agriculture. The land is most fertile and produces several types of agriculture products such as: rice, wheat, maize, joe, gram, oilseeds, sugarcane, jute etc. Several rivers such as Ganga, Saryu, Gandak, Bagmati, Kamla, Kosi etc. emerging from Himalayas Mountain flow through the Bihar planes and makes them fertile. Some channels such as Triveni, Kosi, Kamla, channel from Canada Dam, channel from Gandak Dam, etc. helps in irrigation. Industries based on agricultural products have enough scope i.e., sugar mills, jute mills, edible oil mills, spices and agro based industries have a good potential. http://www.biharonline.gov.in/Site/Content/Citizen/Citizen.aspx?u=1

Agriculture is the key to the overall development of the State economy. Agriculture is the backbone of Bihar's economy 81% of workforce and generating nearly 42% of the State Domestic Product. The percentage of population employed in agriculture production system in Bihar is estimated to 81%, which s much higher than the national average. Nearly 42 per cent of GDP of the state (2004-05) has been from agriculture sector (including forestry and fishing). The state has attained self sufficiency in food grains production. Barring maize and pulses productivity of various farm produce in Bihar is much below the national average. Though the area under cultivation is shrinking, there is tremendous scope for income generation, by improving productivity. Adverse climatic condition, like draught and floods, do play a role in decreasing products. But these adverse conditions can be overcome to some extent by irrigation, flood control and drainage schemes. The agriculture production can only be increased to some extent through enhanced cropping intensity, change in cropping pattern, improvement in seeds of high yielding varieties, cultivation practices and with the availability of better post harvest technology etc. State Govt. is trying to re-orient agriculture through diversification policy and other measures. The gross and net sown area in the State is estimated at 80.26 lakh ha and 56.38 lakh h, respectively. The intensity of cropping is 1.42%. The principal crops are paddy, wheat, pulses, maize, potato, sugarcane, oil seeds, tobacco and jute. Rice, wheat and maize are the major crops. The average yields of rice and wheat are 1.45 and 2.19 t/ha, respectively, as against the production potential (experimental yields at research farm as well as realized in frontline demonstration) of 4.5-5.0 t/ha. Similar, the average of maize yields of the State is about2.38 t/ha as against its yield potential of 5 t/ha. State is rich in soil and water resources, its average yields of Rice, Wheat, Maize in the state are only about 32,44 and 40 percents of the potential yields, respectively. Although, Horticulture (Fruits, vegetables, spices, honey, medicinal and aromatic plants) occupies 15 percent of land area but income generated from horticulture is much higher. The state has a monopoly in production of litchi and makhana and continues to grow various fruits, vegetables, spices and floriculture is catching the imagination of people, reflected in their growing interest, across the state, ion diversification of horticulture. Agriculture productivity in Bihar was much better, compared to other states in fifties which is now much below the national average. In last two years, there has been an approachable growth, due to improved seeds, technologies and inputs. Agriculture is the single largest private sector occupation in Bihar. The goal of the agriculture production system should be to maximize income of land owing and landless rural populace to improve their livelihoods. The vulnerability to income and consumption shocks makes it imperative to develop formal agriculture insurance mechanisms to cope with such risks. http://krishi.bih.nic.in/defolt1.html

The economy of Bihar is largely service orientated, but it also has a significant agricultural base. The state also has a small industrial sector. As of today, agriculture accounts for 35%, industry 9% and service 55% of the economy of the state. The state has a per capita income of $148 a year against India's average of $997 and 30.6% of the state's population lives below the poverty line against India's average of 22.15%. However, Bihar's GSDP grew by 18% over the period 2006-2007, which was higher than in the past 10 years. Agriculture Bihar accounts for 65 per cent of India's annual litchi production, Bihar has significant levels of production for the products of mango, guava, litchi, pineapple, brinjal, cauliflower, bhindi, and cabbage in India. Despite the state's leading role in food production, investment in irrigation and other agriculture facilities has been inadequate in the past. The sugar and vegetable oil industries were flourishing sectors of Bihar. Until the mid fifties, 25% of India's sugar output was from Bihar. Dalmianagar was a large agro - industrial town. और र र Industry Bihar has a number of major public sector projects like the Oil refinery of Indian Oil Corporation and Fertilizer manufacturing plant of Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Ltd (HPCL) at Barauni, Pyrites, Phosphates and Chemicals Ltd (PPCL) at Amjhor; Cotton spinning mills at Siwan, Pandaul, Bhagalpur, Mokamah and Gaya; 13 sugar mills in private sector and 15 in public section located in South and North Bihar. In addition distilleries at Gopalganj, West Champaran, Bhagalpur and Riga (Sitamarhi District); finish leather industry in West Champaran, Muzaffarpur and Barauni; Jute mills at Katihar and Samastipur; Medicine manufacturing unit at Hajipur; Food processing units and Vanaspati manufacturing units at Aurangabad and Patna; Kalyanpur Cement Ltd at Banjari are some of the notable industries in Bihar. Bihar has tremendous resources and their utilisation in the interest of its growing population has to be the supreme responsibility of both the state administration and the national planners. . There have been attempts to industrialize the state between 1950 and 1980: an oil refinery in Barauni, a motor scooter plant at Fatuha, and a power plant at Muzaffarpur. Hajipur, near Patna, remains a major industrial town in the state, linked to the capital city through the Ganga bridge and good road infrastructure. और र र village market The Finance Ministry has given top priority to create investment opportunities for big industrial houses like Reliance. The capital city, Patna, is one of the better off cities in India when measured by per capita income. http://www.biharonline.gov.in/Site/Content/Business/Business.aspx?u=5
