To the outside world, Malibu is this magical place of sun, surfboards, tourists and expensive beach houses. And although Malibu can deliver this star-studded stereotype, the locals of Malibu are what give the community its true personality. With 26 miles of coastline, Malibu sounds perfect. But for the locals, living in Malibu is not about having a “perfect life.” It’s about quality of life. From these Malibu locals emerge four designers, each with their own experience and background, but all with the same vision. Shelly Sjobeck, Garrett Gerson, JesseRay Vasquez and Lani Lupton came together to develop Sjobeck, the laid-back luxury line that wears the way they describe their partnership: a perfect fit. This concept of quality was what instigated the development of the Sjobeck brand. Sjobeck, meaning “by the water,” is all about laid back luxury. The designers wanted to create a collection that fused old world craftsmanship and refined tailoring with modern innovations in textiles. It was the locals of Malibu that inspired their designs and motivated the team to create comfortable yet high-

quality pieces that were 100% American made. Each piece is designed to be versatile to all parts of life: a day at the beach, an afternoon spent shopping, or a night out on the town. The story of Sjobeck begins back in 1947 when Garrett’s great grandparents moved to the west coast from the fast-paced city of New York. When the couple stepped foot onto their newly purchased ranch property, they found much less than expected. This beautiful ranch they had imagined housed nothing but a small outhouse, a single ranch building and a lake. His grandmother, a fashionista clad in high heels and accustomed to a socialite lifestyle surrounded by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Clark Gable, was determined to make things different. Their hard work paid off and today, Calamigos Ranch is a known destination throughout southern California. Run by what is now one of the oldest families in Malibu, the ranch covers an expansive 130 acres and plays host to two lakes, a restaurant and bar, a vineyard, many special events and weddings, as well as overnight cabins for guests. 60 years after his family stepped foot on the Malibu sand, Garrett, taking inspiration from his great grandmother, wanted to showcase his Malibu heritage through clothing design. Getting his start by designing uniforms for the ranch employees, Garrett found he could create “wearable art.” Shelly, after having worked with many different designers on improving their brands, decided she wanted to do it for herself. As a veteran of the fashion industry for over 20 years, Shelly is what the team calls the “experience” behind the label. Lani, with her experience in retail and high-end boutiques, brings to the table a different eye in fashion and expertise in what constitutes quality of a brand. Last but not least, JesseRay, originally on the track to law school, found his call to fashion when he learned the process behind how things were made. Although he describes himself as a “bookworm,” his excitement in discovering that fashion was a new form of expression was vital to the brand’s success. After teaming up, the energy of this new found partnership launched the Sjobeck brand. Living near the ocean, the four were very mindful of the environment and wanted to create a

collection that reflected that. In fact, their very first store was a shipping container on wheels they had recycled and turned into a mobile shopping destination. This store still exists on the beach in Malibu and reflects their passion of taking something unexpected and making it priceless. It was in the 1950s when Garrett’s grandparents moved, that the name Malibu became emblematic with the “beach life.” This new Malibu Lifestyle became all about a youthful, carefree sensibility. The same is true today for the locals of Malibu and the laid back, all-American lifestyle the Sjobeck brand represents. Sjobeck is available at Ron Herman and at Fred Segal Trend. Check out www.sjobeck.com for more information about Sjobeck.

Utta Body Sculpture
UTTA BODY SCULPTURE Sculpting Bodies and Changing Lives

When you sit in an office or drive throughout your day, your legs and back-side don’t get the circulation and movement that it needs,” says UTTA in her charming accent. “I get the circulation flowing and ‘work-out’ the body’s trouble spots, eliminating any kind of deposit or blockage. This is how I get to change the consistency and contouring of the body.” Although intense, the experience is enlivening. Going to the gym every day is equivalent to a weekly Body Sculpting Treatment with UTTA. Clients can feel the depth of the massage in the blocked areas of the body. It can be compared to the experience of a “first-timeworkout;” although, these effects are short-lived. After one or two treatments, people can see differences immediately. Those who receive seven to ten treatments can see the difference in at least a dress size. Her specialties include “stomach stripping” that will pinch the fat off the stomach, eliminating chronic back pain, headaches and sciatic nerve conditions, as well as her “pre and post pregnancy” sculpting. Her famous pregnancy sculpting works the body so those dreaded stretch marks and varicose veins never appear (which with three children of her own are nowhere to be seen on her trimmed body). She also does “crash sessions” for celebrities who need an immediate transformation for photo-shoots or movies where she whips bodies into shape in a few days time. “There are machines that claim to achieve the same results, but with my hands I can feel the body and the particular areas where more or less pressure is needed,” she explains. “My hands were made for sculpting and healing. Combined with my love for people, I am able to use my gift, and help others whether it is to free them of pain or eliminate the cellulite on their thighs and give them a better shape.” Originally from Munich, Germany, UTTA is well known for her generous and caring personality and healing hands that have worked with people from all over the world. Here in Beverly Hills, her studio is tucked away in a charismatic red-brick building off of Wilshire and is more of a “home away from home.” The serene and inviting setting makes it a more than comfortable experience. Not only does an hour with UTTA change a body an enlightening and invigorating experience, her charm and personality, her loyal customers into life-long friendships. For more information www.uttabodysculpture.com. with with turn visit

It is a secret of the stars, and a ritual for those who have experienced the healing hands of UTTA. Some call it therapeutic, some say it is an awakening, yet intense experience. Whatever reason one ventures to UTTA’s Body Sculpting Studio in Beverly Hills, it is life changing. Although fads are more popular now than ever to reduce cellulite, your aging skin or aching muscles, UTTA is far from a fad; it is a treatment that works and has been used for over 30 years. There are many that will testify. Her body sculpting skills have been used on celebrities such as Cher, Cameron Diaz, Candice Bergen and Daryl Hannah, among many other hot Hollywood bodies, who have all come back for more. Through her deep-tissue therapy, UTTA performs a “wake-up call” to your body that livens the senses. With her unbelievably strong hands, her sessions are focused on massaging away your cellulite, pushing out toxins, restoring muscle tone, and healing any ache and pain throughout your body. Keep in mind; this is not your normal massage you would get at a day-spa. For the hour that you are in UTTA’s powerful and healing hands, she attacks the fat on your body by kneading, pulling, and rubbing as your blood begins to flow, turning your skin pink. “I focus on the areas that people don’t use everyday or can’t get to even with specific exercise.

CELEBRITY

PLASTIC SURGEON

DR. SIMONI

& THE 3-D FACE LIFT
angles of the patient’s features. Dr. Simoni has harnessed 3-D to create a new kind of face lift, appropriately named the 3-D Face Lift. Six cameras are used to take pictures of the patient, from multiple angles, which are then inputted into complicated but advanced software combining the photos to create a 3-dimensional image of the face. Once the 3D image of the patient is created, Dr. Simoni can show the patient what changes would look like for their desired procedures in a three dimensional light. Dr. Simoni says, “I have a significant amount of clients that are actresses or actors and models and most of the time they have been taken pictures in front of the cameras in all different angles. For them I always had a problem explaining to them how they look in different angles. Two-dimensional is never like 3-dimensional, I mean you cannot get that good lifelike feeling. It’s like looking at somebody in a picture it’s very difficult to judge. Now we can show them in different angles how they look and some people say, ‘I have a better side or I look better in this angle,’ and such and they want to see how they look with those changes.” This revolutionary technology allows patients to see potential changes from everything from a face lift, to fat injections, or even skin resurfacing with 95% accurate results. But even with computer imaging, the surgeon has to know the ability of his or herself and realize what changes can be done. Dr. Simoni won’t give his patients a false idea of something he can’t deliver. A lot of patients come in with pictures of celebrities saying they want to look like them or have their features. It’s Dr. Simoni’s job to see if what they want is even possible. He tries to offer them what’s available to them, but stay realistic, as he does not want to give the patient a wrong sense of what can be done. Jennifer Aniston’s and Ashley Simpson’s noses are most requested and for lips, Angelina Jolie’s. But more often than not, patients will come in and say they don’t want to look like Michael Jackson or Joan Rivers. “I try to make people understand that they should try to look like themselves. I understand how some people might want to look like somebody else, but I discourage that because somebody’s nose might not look good on the other person. Everybody has a different facial anatomy. I try to make sure that they understand the change that they were meant with will fit into their own balance of their face rather than use somebody else’s nose or somebody else’s

You may have seem him on Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, CNBC, TLC, CNN, Bravo, E!, on ABC’s The Doctors, Oxygen, or in various print publications. He’s Dr. Payman Simoni, facial plastic surgeon to the stars of Beverly Hills. Born in Iran, Dr. Simoni moved to New York at 17 years old and began his medical career there. When he was in medical school they had a female patient that was a banker. The door of the safe closed on her hand severing all her fingers. She was getting married in three months and was devastated to lose her ring finger. After a fifteen hour surgery, he and the medical team were able to save her fingers, they were invited to the wedding and the elated feeling how they changed her life determined what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Eventually he moved into specializing in only facial plastic surgery. Three years ago he ventured out to the West Coast leaving New York behind, realizing that in Los Angeles plastic surgery wasn’t just a luxury it was a necessity for those in the public eye. Now Dr. Simoni is helping to advance plastic surgery one step further by utilizing technology developed for the entertainment industry bringing it into the operating room. We’ve seen the use of 3-dimensional technology in many films and such productions as Shrek, now this technology is being used in plastic surgery, in offices like Dr. Simoni’s. Prior to this, nose job or face lift patients were shown 2-dimensional images of what they would look like after the procedure, which only gave front and side view
28

DR. SIMONI

eyebrows. Sometimes they ask for certain changes and I tell them it doesn’t look good and they don’t believe me once I make the change and they go, ‘Oh you’re right. I don’t like it.’ Then we talk about the changes that I think will look better and we’ll see if they like that idea.” With this beneficial tool in plastic surgery patients are likely to add on procedures to their wish list when they see their face from angles that they’ve probably never seen before. We’re used to seeing ourselves from the front or side profile in the mirror, but when you see your face in a 3-D image, it’s much different than a 2-D picture. There’s also another dimension to this technology. The camera not only captures image of the face, it actually captures the texture skin and it shows redness from sun damage. “It’s quite interesting to see the face and to see the skin in a totally different color and see the sun damage show dark and they can see their skin which parts are damaged and then people realize they have to do something for their skin. We recommend skin creams or if they need skin resurfacing. You see your skin in a very different style when you use the program to do a skin analysis.” One procedure that he uses 3-D imaging for is his one hour face lift called The SIMONI LIFT TM (also referred to as a “The face lift of the future”). It’s a minor, one-hour procedure with long lasting natural results. This face lift procedure was designed by Dr. Simoni to improve the laxity of jowls, cheeks, loose neck (turkey neck) and facial skin without the need for major anesthesia. The Simoni face lift recovery is quicker and more comfortable than with a traditional face lift, giving much more natural results. This procedure is best for people who do not wish to have a traditional pulled and unnatural face lift look. Contrary to the name, it’s a comprehensive, not a shortcut procedure. While some surgeons will use the term Stem Cell Lift, if they are just injecting fat transfer into the face, it is not a true Stem Cell Lift. This kind of life is not a new technology, but a true Stem Cell Lift is a face lift with fat transfer combined. Your fat has stem cells in it, and when they separate the fat and re-inject it into the face, the fat helps to fill out the hallowed parts of the face, areas that we lose with age. The stem cells which are in the fat cells continue to rejuvenate the face. It is a progress type of face lift. “We perform the face lift, we add the fat but within the next six months to a year, people start to see their face looking better and better. Those stem cells start going into action and give out growth hormones and improve sun damages to the tissue that occur with age and sun and chemicals.” Dr. Simoni says the reason his face lift results are so accurate, aren’t just because he’s so experienced and in demand he’s doing two to three face lifts a day, it’s because he has the patient sitting in the up-right position during the procedure. “When we do a traditional face lift under anesthesia, the patient lies back on the bed and everything goes backward and everything looks good and the doctor makes a guess on where the face goes and when they are wrong by a few degrees when the patient sits up, then you see funny lines and abnormal shapes in the face and the face may look different. But when the patient sits up, I have the

luxury to see what I am doing, the same way a person is sitting, I can see the natural effect of gravity on them and when I’m doing it, I don’t have to make guesses. It comes in handy extremely when I do my fat transfer because you have to add it to certain areas of the face to make it look natural. So I sit the patient up during the whole procedure, they sit up in a 45-degree angle and I think that creates a more natural result.” If you do decide to get plastic surgery, make sure that it’s for the right reasons. Dr. Simoni says it’s typical for people to come in for the wrong reasons. “We get them all the time. When I talk to my patients I ask them why they want this procedure done and why now? I try to figure out if somebody had a major life changing event like they just got divorced or somebody passed away where they might act not within their normal thinking and if they are acting rash then I would usually turn them down. I ask them what their name is and how long have they been wanting the procedure to be done and why now. Before the procedure I always ask if they have a major psychological issue because I want to make sure they are thinking correctly and they are having it done for the right reasons. Also if they have an unrealistic expectation, like they want to look like a twenty year old and they are sixty years old, this is unrealistic, I can’t make people look that young. That 3-D imaging is the best way for me to understand if they have a unrealistic expectation or not because once I make the change and they see it and they are happy with it, then we know what they want. And if they say no, I want this, and this, I try to make them realize this is unrealistic or tell them they’ll look abnormal. I try not to do it. I tell them, ‘No I will not do that or I cannot achieve what you want.’” He’s done surgeries for children as young as 5 years old for ear tucks, so they heal early on. Dr. Simoni’s state of the art facility is in Beverly Hills. The 3-D consultation is only $150 to see what the possibilities are, if you’re considering a face lift. Summer Make-up

Tips & How to get Beautiful Lips!

Sexy

by Expert Stylist Monae Everett

Summer 2011 is all about enhancing your natural beauty… and bold sexy lips. Think about your favorite childhood super heroines. Wonder Woman, Rogue, Super Woman all had a few things in common. Their skin was as smooth as porcelain and lips that could stop a villain in his tracks. Since many people aren’t born with perfect skin, thankfully we have makeup to make your skin look nice and smooth. To make your dermis look its best, start with a proper skin care regimen. Make sure to wash and moisturize your face at least twice a day. For an even deeper clean, exfoliate your entire face, including your lips, at least once a week. Now it’s time to play with makeup! Apply a light face primer to prolong your look and smooth any fine lines. I like to apply my foundation before the concealer. Though concealer is great for covering blemishes, sometimes full coverage foundation will cover your imperfections. Just dab a little concealer on top of your liquid or crème foundation, where ever it’s needed. To top it off, just powder your T-zone for a natural look. Once your complexion is clear, it’s all about making those lips pop. For a perfect pout, lightly cover your lips with concealer to even out the tone. Use a lip liner
32

the same color as your lip color to define or correct your lip shape. You can even make your lips a little fuller by lining slightly outside of the lips. Fill in your lips with the liner for deeper tone. Add your lip color with a lip brush for a really defined vamp look. Or use your fingertip for a subdued look. Summer 2011 lip colors are all about the super sexy! Pinks are in from soft to bold. Reds are always beautiful and were hot on the runways this season. But there are a couple of things to keep in mind when wearing red lip color. Always choose the right red lipstick shade based on your skin complexion. The general recommendations are pale skin looks better with blue based reds. Medium-to-dark skins fare well with deeper reds, with brown or tawny bases. Whether you choose pink or red, matte or shimmer, just make sure that your lips give you super powers.

I would say find beauty applications or routines that works for you, because everyone is different. As well as be yourself. As cliché as that is. I wanted to create my own because I wanted to create something that all my fans would enjoy wearing as much as I do and so they could go and grab the bottle for an affordable price! Despite the growing bazaar of celebrity perfumes, what motivated you to add to that market? I’ve always loved fragrances and scents. I get it from my mom and nana because they always had gorgeous bottles of perfume on their vanities. I loved looking at them and smelling nice so I wanted to create my own.

Reveal

by Halle Berry

(New York, NY) Coty inc. announces the launch of Reveal by Halle Berry, an alluring new fragrance that speaks to the iconic beauty’s glamour and confidence while revealing the intriguing complexity of a woman. The perfect complement to her fragrance collection, Halle by Halle Berry and Pure Orchid by Halle Berry, Reveal is a memorable fragrance that captures the spirit of classic glamour with a modern and sexy twist. A perfect balance of timeless sophistication and easy elegance, Reveal is truly reminiscent of what it means to be naturally glamorous - an intriguing blend of confidence, charisma, realness…with a touch of mystery. “Reveal is an invitation for women to share their story, to reveal some parts of themselves that they have not yet expressed,” says Halle Berry. “It is a timeless fragrance that I think will make women feel beautiful and confident.” “Halle Berry is one of Hollywood’s greatest treasures but despite her public persona, she remains an enigma. Reveal is about the mystery behind the woman; that indescribable quality that captivates and intrigues us,” says Steve Mormoris, Senior Vice President Global Marketing Coty Beauty. Created in partnership with Richard Herpin of Firmenich, this beautiful floral woody composition is a versatile scent with a unique signature blending classic sophistication with modern sexiness. Reveal opens with a sparkling burst of naturally fresh, fruity top notes. Halle’s favorite flower, the delicate and

luminous mimosa, blends with undertones of peach, honey dew melon and red berries to create a sense of drenched lushness and sparkling radiance. At its elegant heart, a soft and light floral bouquet of plumeria flower, iris blossom and neroli petals blooms on the skin, evoking utter femininity. The fragrance then settles on a seductive base of vetiver, cashmere woods and skin musk, delivering a creamy addiction that leaves an intoxicating trail. Halle comments that “Reveal“ has a perfect balance. Light and fresh, it becomes sexier and more mysterious as you wear it. The iris is a very special part of this composition. The scent of iris can be a bit dark or woody, but I decided to choose facets of it that make it feel velvety soft and airy.”

TEEKI: Swimwear Designer Interview
Thank you for caring about our environment. I love that your swimwear saves and reuses plastic bottles. Sometimes reuse is forgotten in the Re-duce, Re-use, Re-cycle trifecta. With the increase in popularity, are you using more plastic than ever? Yes we are. The public tends to dig the fact that the bikinis are made from recycled plastic bottles and for the most part people are starting to see the many ways that you can recycle. Each bikini reuses 89% recycled plastic. A typically bikini keeps 12 water bottles from going into the already full landfills. What inspired you to create an eco-conscious line? I have always been an advocate of a green life style, therefore anything I do in life is backed by the intention to do my part for the environment. I have also always been into bikinis and having the cutest ones! So I combined the 2 and started an eco business. I sampled a lot of different fabrics and the best one that I think for bikinis is made from recycled plastic. It is great that you all support local business. What is characteristic of a Teeki employee? How does it transpire in the quality of product? A teeki employee has to want and live an active, healthy, conscious life that is full of love, strong will and hard work. These qualities in our employees allows our product to not only shine but also progress. We love supporting the U.S. economy and helping our country as a whole, grow. How did you know how to transform plastic the way you do? I didn’t really know when I started! I just figured it out when searching for the perfect bikini fabric that is eco friendly. The bikini fabric is made from recycled water bottles or also known as P.E.T. Basically the petroleum from the water bottles is melted
70

down and reused to make the polyester. The cool thing is, it saves 90% of water that is typically used in making fabric. All because my bikini fabric reuses the plastic that once a bottle. Your preview line for summer 2011 is Rockin’. What inspired the mis-match top / bottom theme? I like it when you can have something different then everyone else. I also want my clients to have that option too. You can actually buy matching pieces if you want. But I also want to show people that you can have a few pieces and still rock many different looks for whatever you are feeling like that day, or for what ever kind of holiday you are on. Studies show that plastic bottles leak harmful materials into its contents. Are your bathing suits safe to wear on a hot day at the beach? They are definitely safe to wear on a hot day. Everything that would be harmful is removed in the breaking down of the plastic bottles in the beginning stage of the process, before the yarn is even spun. What do you recommend for girls with more curves on the beach?

Curves are sexy, and to make them look amazing, I would recommend a thicker strap on the top for bustier women with a bottom that has thinner sides on the front with a fuller back. If it is string bottoms make sure that the front piece meets the back piece completely and then ties. If you are not comfortable showing your stomach but still want something sexy then a high waisted bottom paired with a demi cup under wire top is perfect for support and lift. Teeki’s 2011 collection offers all of these! Where can we find your swimsuits? You can find teeki at The Closet in Southern California, if you are in Destin Florida you can find them at Luxe Apothetique and if you are having a holiday in Charleston SC you can find them at McKevlin’s Surf Shop. For a whole list of stores go to www.teekilove.com.

Basically the petrolium from the waterbottles is melted down and reused to make the polyester. It is a clean process and the heat kills all germs from the recycled waterbottles. All of our printed fabric that we use is vintage fabrics. Each Teeki bikini keeps 12 bottles out of our landfills. Teeki makes everything in the states which not only elimantes on our carbon footprint, but also helps support the U.S. economy, which we all know is crucial during times like these. We use as much of the fabric roll as possible. Fabric not used for bikini’s are made into straps, bracelets or recycled.

Here’s some more info on the eco-friendly swimwear line, Teeki. Teeki strives to be as environmently Teeki is continuously looking for more ways to better the conscious as possible. Here are some examples of how envirnment, and does everything in its entirety to be Teeki does their part. conscious. We love your help and support with the bikinis and yoga and of course your conscious mind. The bikini fabric is made from recycled water bottles or also known as P.E.T . Who Needs Men?
Author & Relationship Expert Donna Estes Antebi Dishes the Secrets to Survival Every Woman Needs to Know
As we move full swing into 2011, the world continues to change at a dizzying pace. Great advances abound in technology and medical research, but one major, life-sustaining matter is on life support - marriage. A lot of folks want you to believe that marriage is not only down for the count, but relevant as a rotary phone. But do we even need marriage anymore? After all, do women need men? A famous old quote, attributed to feminist author Gloria Steinem, states: ‘’A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.’’ It seems that half of our nation agrees with her. But was she right? Gloria missed a major point. Women may not need men, but children still do. And since most women have children, a mother needs a reliable partner in life - whether she realizes it or not. married or not, and stay that way or not. We can openly have sex with anyone we please, and it’s up to us to decide if we want to have children - in or out of wedlock. If we are married or single, mothers or childless, many women are able to enjoy the privilege of staying home or having a career. These days, it’s up to us. Sounds fabulous, right? What could women possibly have to complain about now that we seemingly have it all? The answer is plenty. Something unexpected happened once American men realized that American women have succeeded in their fight for liberation. The fellas made a calculated decision of their own: American men conceded to women’s liberation by exchanging equal opportunities for women with the historic

Gloria is right on this: Women in America have come a long way. We have freedom and choices that were only once a dream. We have equal rights and opportunity in the workplace, and we comprise almost fifty percent of the workforce. ‘’Mad Men/ atta-girl’’ butt swats are practically unheard of in the professional workplace now. Women have also successfully closed the education gap. We can get
76

“A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”
obligations of men -- and out the door they went! And after they left, half of them never came back. No guilt, no shame, and no accountability. See ya. The fairy tale ending to women’s liberation has turned into a nightmare for American children, exacerbated by the tabloids. Modern media highlights Americans living in a reality show-obsessed, fidelity-challenged, porn-tainted, short-cut nation. If a woman says ‘’no,’’ a man says ‘’next.’’ Men have devolved into sperm donors, babies are now accessories, and divorce carries no shame. Here is the sobering counterpoint to our new found freedom: Most women work - most women have to work. More than fifty percent go back to work four months (or less!) after giving birth. Half of all marriages end in divorce, and an average marriage lasts only seven years. An average second marriage lasts about seven years too! Fifty percent of mothers are single by the time their child finishes the first grade. For the first time ever, there are more single women than married women. Women and children often end up being the biggest financial losers when the divorce shakes out. Lack of money equals lack of opportunity. The largest demographic living in poverty in America is comprised of single mothers, either divorced or unwed, making up

ninety percent of the welfare recipients. Poverty is generally not something that works out well for children. Listen, I am the first to admit that marriage can be a colossal pain. But generally most complaints are about the small stuff. It takes less than thirty seconds to pick his socks off the floor, or rinse the coffee grinds down the sink. Yet women can be quick to relentlessly grind away respect by tearing down the one person who would take a bullet for her. Think about that. Then think about the catastrophic domino effect divorce would have on your children. Now go pick up the socks. Statistics show that children who grow up in a stable two parent home fare better in school, are more likely to keep away from drugs, and make their way in life far more successfully. However, I’m not saying that couples should remain in an abusive situation. Absolutely not. Infidelity is another huge factor in divorce. But I’m going to lay something huge out here. If the horror of infidelity strikes - do not give up! There is never dignity in cheating, but there is always dignity in fighting for your family. Yes. For the sake of the children. Because marriage really is for the sake of the children. If you are single, take this warning very seriously. Who you choose to have kids with will be the most important decision you will ever make. You can have a starter marriage, but not a starter family. Keeping a family in tact is one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children, and to the world.

ONANONG Swimwear
Swim in style with ONANONG Swimwear’s glamorous initial collection - officially unveiling for Spring Summer 2011! Effortlessly capturing the sun drenched vitality of beaches from Santa Monica, CA to Miami, FL, from the Caribbean to Ibiza, Onanong Swimwear also manages to embody the insouciant elegance of modern city women for a flawless fusion of the best of both worlds. From sleek body shaping pieces to flirty two-piece numbers, the line turns the heat up for the season with a wide range of choices in solids and subtle prints covering the gamut of spectacular colors from neutrals to sunset orange, coral, Mediterranean, pink sand and others. Each piece is also replete with clever details including ruffles, keyhole cut outs, side links and slinky straps with the design versatility to be mixed and matched for different looks. Designed by Oni Souratha, the label was conceived to bring a touch of escapist allure and the carefree sensibility of exotic islands to women everywhere, all year round. “Whether you’re spending a holiday on the beach, taking a dip in the lake or simply swimming at an indoor pool, you can’t go wrong with a little glamour in how you look,” explains Oni. “And who says you can’t be elegant and fun at the same time? That’s what I want to convey with the designs.” Additionally, the line was created to flatter various body types to appeal to women from their teens to their 50s. Manufactured in fine quality lycra blends and technically advanced synthetics for consistent superior quality, retention and durability, Onanong Swim wear is making a splash among fashion and entertainment insiders and slated to become the new must-have brand among consumers as well. Available at retail from $80-$175, the line is gradually expanding to also include men’s and children’s swim wear. Established by co-founders Oni Souratha and Mekhi Phifer, ONANONG, which in Thai means “beautiful”, is the vibrant new swim wear collection that blends the carefree attitude of beach culture with city sophistication. Conceived in and
80

based out of Los Angeles, the line is a reflection of that seeming dichotomy in the way the city is the center of the entertainment and music industries even as it maintains the laid back attitude of the land of eternal sunshine. Oni Souratha is a West Coast native who practically grew up in the industry. As a child, she often tagged along her sister who worked for a swimwear line. Witnessing the creative chaos of everything from design to runway presentations, Oni quickly decided that this was what she wanted to do. She eventually gravitated toward wardrobe styling for music videos and production work, assisting veteran director Bille Woodruff for the videos of Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige and many others. In between projects, Oni judiciously developed her ideas for a swimwear line and meticulously sought out fabric sourcing and manufacturing facilities. Business partner Mekhi Phifer stepped in and helped her put together a business plan and financing to start their joint venture. Mekhi Phifer is the widely known film and television actor who made his auspicious debut in Spike Lee’s “Clockers” and has since racked up an impressive string of credits from the big screen “8 Mile” to hit shows such as NBC’s “ER” and Fox’s “Lie to Me”. Born and raised in New York, Mekhi brings to the company a disciplined East Coast pragmatismand savvy entrepreneurial sense. Aside from his film and television projects, he serves aschairman of the board of trustees of a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational resources to universities in Africa.

EXTREME Anti-Aging Remedies

for the rich and famous
Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber (Around $13,000)
Rashmi Gulati, MD, Medical Director, Patients Medical: “Mainstream medicine has been using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for head and brain injuries, Lyme’s disease, diabetic wounds and decompression illness for years, which the FDA has approved. More recently, we are finding this therapy has more versatile applications for wellness. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber is the ultimate anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants reverse that damage in a similar way, at the cellular level. You hear about the benefits of eating foods that are powerful anti-oxidants, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the fast-track to the same. HBOT is pure oxygen, which can reverse damage from free radicals. The pressurized chamber allows the oxygen to be more bio-available to your cells, the part of your body that most needs the oxygen for the anti-aging effect. Under the supervision of a qualified physician, HBOT can be an amazing rejuvenator -- you’ll feel the effects as soon as you get out of the chamber and the energy and vitality will last for days to come. You may notice your skin and eyes will look healthier and clearer, as circulation is improved. It may have a balancing effect on stress levels, as we all know that the big day can be nerve wracking (and stress is one of the greatest causes of free radical damage on the cells!). It may even help your sex drive for that special night! “

The Dental Face lift:
Dr. Irwin Smigel is a NYC cosmetic dentist and the father of Aesthetic dentistry “We often see people with tired, aged appearances in which their faces sag. The culprit is often the individual’s teeth or lack of them causing an imbalance of the muscles of facial expression. The muscles of facial expression are responsible for the appearance and function of our facial architecture. Ideally, they are supported (held up) to their proper physiological position by tooth and bone structure. The Dental Face lift is a non-surgical procedure that “long-term” restores your face to its ideal proportions without surgery or filler injections. Our teeth, the foundation of our face, wear down as we grow older, and as our teeth get smaller, or particularly if teeth are extracted, our face starts to shrink and sag around them. By performing dental procedures like bonding or applying crowns or veneers, we are able to “build out” the teeth, adding fullness to the lips and cheekbones and soften the nasiolabial lines. Altering the shape and look of the face leaves your skin and muscles tensioned and more youthful looking. The cost is $10,000 and up (ranges per patient).

The Fountain of Youth Supplement TA-65
Dr. Edward Park of Recharge Biomedical “TA-65 is a nutraceutical molecule extracted from a medicinal herb called Astragalus. A biotech company called Geron discovered that it could enhance DNA repair. When those tips, called telomeres, get too short, the information of the chromosome can be damaged, causing the cell to malfunction or even become cancerous. Most, if not all changes associated with aging are caused by this natural, but reversible, telomere shortening. Healthy choices like eating well, exercise, and sleep rejuvenate us by activating our stem cells’ telomerase activity. So taking TA-65 is like getting all those benefits simply by taking a capsule. Because hundreds of people have taken TA-65 since 2005 and 90% of them continue taking it because it has helped them to grow younger and healthier. There have been no reported side effects. Tips for optimizing the circulatory system, from expert Dr. Luis Navarro:
GET REGULAR EXERCISE. Any type of exercise that strengthens the “second heart” - the muscles of the calf and foot – is beneficial. Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week. Suggested activities include walking, running, swimming and bicycling. WEAR GRADUATED COMPRESSION STOCKING. Compression stockings act like an added layer of muscle, aiding the performance of the “second heart” and venous circulation. MONITOR HORMONE INTAKE. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy constrict blood vessels and can weaken vein valves and vein walls. AVOID PROLONGED PERIODS OF SITTING AND STANDING. Rotate your ankles and feet whenever possible, walk for at least 10 minutes every hour, and point and flex your toes to promote leg vein circulation. ELEVATE YOUR FEET. Raise your feet 6 to 12 inches above your heart whenever possible to assist circulation.
86

EAT A HIGH FIBER & LOW SALT DIET. Salt retains water and constipation puts pressure on the venous system. MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE BODY WEIGHT FOR YOUR FRAME. Obesity can strain the circulatory system. WEAR LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING. Tight garments can restrict the flow of blood to and from the legs. CONSIDER DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS. Vitamins C and E act as antioxidants, which are good for circulation. Flavonoids, butcher’s broom, and Horse Chestnut Seed Extract (HCE50) improve venous circulation and decrease symptoms of venous disease. AVOID CROSSING YOUR LEGS. Leg crossing constricts veins increases venous pressure. and

including getting regular exercise, wearing compression stockings, elevating your legs and eating a proper diet that is high in fiber and low in salt. However, the best prevention always is to seek treatment in the early stages of the disease. So where do you begin? Firstly, do your homework! Find a doctor who specializes in the treatment of venous disorders (the treatment of varicose and spider veins) who can perform proper evaluation and testing at the time of the initial consultation. Sclerotherapy (injection of a sclerosing agent that collapses the vein) is the treatment of choice for spider veins. After a number of sessions (depending on how many spiders you have and depending on the desired degree of perfection), legs can be summer-ready in a few months. Sclerotherapy involves a 20 minutes session of injections directly into the spider vein. The legs are then comfortably wrapped in an elastic bandage for a few hours to allow the solution to do it job. Patients can return to work and resume normal daily activity immediately following treatment. patient is able to walk away and return to work or daily activities immediately following the procedure. To avoid doctor-shopping, seek referrals from friends and family who have had their veins treated by physicians that specialize in the field; search the internet for vein centers in your area, or even consult a professional organization. The American College of Phlebology is a helpful resource www.phlebology.org. The Vein Treatment Center in New York, New York (www.veintreatmentcenter.com), headed by surgeon, Dr. Luis Navarro is one of the most well respected and established vein centers in the country. As one of the only facilities to specialize solely in the treatment of vein disorders, the Vein Treatment Center never fails to deliver on its promise of excellence and the highest standards of medicine, all taking place in an esthetically pleasing and immaculate, spa-like environment. Dr. Navarro, an innovator and a leader in the field of phlebology for 25 plus years, is also the inventor of Endovenous Laster Ablation (Endolaser), the most sought after treatment for the elimination of varicose veins, which has revolutionized the field of phlebology. Among the latest equipment and most advanced treatment methods utilized by Vein Treatment Center are sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, duplex-guided sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation (Endolaser), and mini phlebectomy, all performed in-house under local anesthesia. The advent of these minimally invasive procedures has made hospital bed-ridden surgery obsolete. Their goal in short, is to alleviate symptoms while achieving the best cosmetic results… regardless of the complexity or simplicity of the problem.

n alarming 55% of all American women and 20% of American men suffer from some form of vein disorder. Whether it is unsightly, spider-resembling purple patches or bulging rope-like veins that protrude from the skin, veins can be painful, unsightly and downright embarrassing. Come summertime, seeing the likes of bikini-clad women and short shorts all around you can certainly do a number on your self-confidence, if you are one of those unfortunate individuals suffering from a vein disorder. But don’t despair; there is much that can be done.

Though genetics plays the most significant role in the development of this condition, other factors play a role including pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone therapy, obesity, lack of exercise, weight fluctuation, constipation, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing. Varicose veins (large, protruding and rope-like in nature) develop due to a weakening of vein valves and vein walls. Leg veins are fitted with one-way valves that assist in pumping blood back to the heart and lungs and thus preventing blood from flowing backwards. When a valve weakens or becomes defective, gravity forces the blood back down which collects in the lower legs, causing the veins to bulge When is comes to varicose veins, the best results come from a combined outward. approach. Interview with

Sophie Monk
winning, beating over 2,500 hopefuls. Her life completely changed forever. “I woke up one day with a number one album and everyone knowing my name, it was a real shock.” Signed to Warner Music, Sophie and the other four winners were flown to Sydney to record their debut single. The group was named Bardot, after the French actress Brigitte Bardot. Their debut single Poison, and their self-titled debut album hit the charts at number one, setting the record as the first Australian act to debut at #1. After two and a half years of exploding onto the Australian music scene, touring worldwide, and going double-platinum the girls decided to take a well-earned break. Sophie admits she played a role in the disbanding of Bardot, she says, “It stopped being fun. Entertainment should be fun. We worked 18 hour days, and it affected all the girls differently.” Sophie said that learning the business aspects of the industry was her favorite part about being in Bardot. Soon after parting ways with the girls, Sophie started working on her solo career, re-signing to Warner Music. She had even more amazing opportunities like traveling the world, working and writing with huge name producers, and enjoying her solo success with several top 10 hits. In her own words, she was still innocent and pure when she came to America in 2006, guarded and in a bubble. As a teen in Australia, she was the most famous girl in the entire country, with people constantly giving her the royal treatment, catering to her every need, and quite frankly kissing her ass. When she came to the United States, she had no one, and no one cared who she was. She truly had to start over.

e all remember Sophie Monk from her unforgettable sexy role, starring alongside Alyson Hannigan in the comedy Date Movie, where she plays Andy, the female best man. Who can forget her sizzling swimsuit scene spoofing Paris Hilton’s infamous burger commercial? But there is a lot about Sophie that many people might not know. She’s one of Australia’s biggest stars and cover girl, and had her start in music way before she ever became a comedic sex symbol in America. She was only 8 years old when her professional singing career began and she even worked as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator at Warner Bros. Movie World. Sophie Charlene Akland Monk was originally born in London, England. Her parents made the move to Queensland, Australia, where she grew up on the Gold Coast. She said, “I would go to the beach at lunch during school, like a holiday. I was very blessed. We didn’t have much money but you don’t need it in Australia to have a good life.” Her dad was a project manager and architect, and her mother was and still is a nurse. They worked hard to provide her and her siblings with every opportunity for the best upbringing they could possibly give, including dance and singing lessons. Sophie’s classical and pop music training began as a child, which led to her being a trained opera teacher. Her mom knew she had talent, and prompted Sophie to audition for the first series of the television talent show, Popstars, Australia’s version of American Idol. The show’s premise was that the winners would become a part of a pop girl singing group. She was only 18 when they made the overnight drive to the auditions, but had no idea what she was in for. After numerous rounds of singing and dancing workshops, she ended up

Sophie started making a name for herself in Hollywood, taking on supporting roles in film and on TV, including appearances in music videos. Date Movie was her first debut feature role on the silver screen, quickly followed by Click with Adam Sandler, where she played David Hasselhoff’s flirtatious secretary. Click debuted number one on both the US and Australian box office charts. She said that working on that film with Adam Sandler was one of the highlights of her career. You also may have seen her American television debut in a 2007 episode of the Golden Globe AwardWinning HBO series Entourage, where she has a steamy sex scene with Vincent Chase (played by Adrian Grenier). With the exception of her role in the horror flick The Hills Run Red, Sophie’s become mostly known for her sex appeal and blonde comedic type performances. I asked her if she was content as a sex symbol or if she’d like to conquer more dramatic roles. She responded, “I’d love to branch out, but comedy and sexy stuff is what fits me best. I don’t look like the victim girl next door, although, in life, I am so unsexy, and unlucky when it comes to love.” Her favorite role she’s played, so far in her acting career, was Hard Breakers (out now) she says, “Because it’s like me.” A philanthropist and supporter of many charities, Sophie personally dedicated herself to giving back to our country. She knew she could do more than just donate money. She spent time visiting our US troops, touring with Steve Irwin and Bon Jovi. They traveled to several danger-zones in Iraq, entertained our soldiers, boosted morale, took pictures and signed autographs. One can only imagine what that’s like. She said, “It was the most amazing experience of my life. We don’t realize how much they are going through.” In 2007, Sophie posed nude for the animal rights organization PETA, promoting vegetarianism. She told me that she became a vegetarian when she was 17 because, “I decided I didn’t like eating flesh.” She says her favorite foods are seafood and ice cream, but not together of course. Ironically enough she turned down a $1 million offer from Playboy, obviously not because she’s against posing nude, but it was partially because she felt the timing wasn’t right. She did tell me that it may still be a possibility for her down the road. To date, Sophie’s favorite modeling job was working for Pepsi. “They were such kind, fun people.” Her favorite endorsement was a bio-fit bra campaign. While she confided that she doesn’t believe in love
96

at first sight, she’s recently announced in January she’s become engaged to her boyfriend businessman Jimmy Esebag, (20+ years her senior). His company ‘United Licensing Group,’ owns the rights to the Playboy brand, and also works with Elite Modeling Agency. She said she’s dated a lot of people in the industry, and testifies that they tend to have their heads in the clouds. Her and her fiancé originally met over a work deal that she passed on, and they ended up staying friends for a while, which only later budded into romance. In the past, she’s had some breakups with celebrities that have subjected her to the scrutiny of the public, (romantically linked to names like Benji Madden and Ryan Seacrest). Having to explain her personal life to the world isn’t one of the greatest perks to working in entertainment, although she’s aware that it comes with the territory. “Your private life is not private. It’s worse for whoever is in my life. I’m tough as nails now, been through it all. When it affects my family and loved ones, then it breaks my heart.” One of her latest endeavors has been filling in for Jackie O (while she’s on maternity leave); for the number one Australian morning radio program the Kyle and Jackie O show, on 104.1 2DayFM. “I totally love radio. You forget that millions of people are listening. So I tend to say some silly stuff. I have foot-in-mymouth disease.” When I asked her if she is currently working on any music projects or has any future music plans, she said, “I’m currently meeting about it. I was burnt out, but now I miss it. I was touring for 4 years straight.” She’s always working on many projects, including joining our team here as Marketing Director and partner at Runway Magazine Inc. Constantly on the move, she says, “It never stops, which I’m grateful for… pilots, shows, and modeling for endorsements, I live in a suitcase.” Like any normal woman, she hopes to settle down in the near future. “I just want to laugh every day and be happy.” Stay on the look-out for Sophie. In person, she’s a true sweetheart, down-to-earth and low-key. She prefers lounging in sweats all day rather than being made up. This sexy Aussie beauty is about to take her American film and television career to the next level.

Runway Report

Resortwear Designer

Maggie Coulombe
Your collections are elegant and fashion-forward, a style laced with free flowing elements, a sort of modern draping of beautiful fabrics, mixed up with corsets and pumps. Are you going to be mixing elements come spring? Always! What inspires you to design travel-friendly clothing that’s comfy, yet stylish? I’ve really drawn inspiration from my own globe-trotting to create versatile pieces that make it easy for women to travel. I want women who lead a “jetsetter style” like myself to have pieces they can wear from a board meeting to cocktails/ dinner without having to change their entire outfit. I use a lot of wrinkle-free materials that take up very little space in a suitcase and can instantly get their shape back once on a hanger again. I’m also inspired by the natural Hawaiian beauty that surrounds me every day. My designs have continuously evolved to juxtapose rich, feminine textiles like silk against inexpensive, masculine materials like denim. Combining comfort with elegance, I design all my pieces in such a way to allow for freedom and mobility. It’s a bold move to create one-size-fits-all dresses. What is your philosophy behind that? A bit bold maybe, but it works and has been well-received by my clients who range from a size 2 to a size 12 I recognize that celebrities, as well as the rest of us, want to look stunning straight off the beach or plane. One way I’ve accomplished this is to create one-size-fits-all dresses that drape around the body as if tailored to each wearer. As a result, my designs are also multi-functional. Most pieces can be worn at least three different ways. Are you rockin’ pumps or sandals on the runway this spring? A mix of the two! High Heel Sandals. Your fabrics are sometimes very sheer. Are these elements based on your experiences on Maui, an island full of humidity and heat? My designs are all about “effortlessness” and “island chic,” so the fabrics definitely provide this feel. What kind of fur do you use in your collections? Does fur have a place in a Spring/Summer wardrobe too? I use Mink which is more geared toward winter styles and my cold-weather collection. Do you think it’s a bit controversial to design with fur? As a native Canadian, it’s how we started. I first learned about skins from Ojibwa Indians. The concept is part of the heritage which I’ve minimally incorporated into the collection. Do you like to stick to solid colors for summer or might we see floral and/or animal print? My current pallet of colors are more cerebral ranging from whites, grays and blacks to muted purples and wines. But I absolutely love incorporating prints into my line. I have sourced some new beautiful fabrics for my summer collection, so you’ll be seeing painted charmeuse for sure. You tweeted recently about a new resort line? When will your secrets be unveiled? I create new pieces every day, so the unveiling is a bit ongoing. When and why did you choose to relocate to Lahaina, Maui? I went to Maui on vacation in 1995 and loved it so much, I moved there a month later. I got my start on the island by altering designer clothes like Dior, Gucci and Prada in a beachside property. By 2000, after getting to know the local socialites, I was ready to launch my own line. It’s the perfect place to design a resort collection. Maui attracts experienced world travelers, who are essentially my market. They know what garments travel well, and that’s what I offer them: clothing in transitional fabrics like silk and cashmere that can be worn in many ways, and cuts and are always in season. Where can we find your line? My storefront is located at 505 Front Street, #107 in Lahaina, HI. If you can’t physically make it to the island, we can personally walk you through our designs via web cam. I also spend a few months each year at my studio in Vancouver, Canada where I also have many clients. We are more than happy to schedule one on one appointments with customers in either location. Beauty Expert & Author Nina Sutton Dishes her Spring Beauty
Spring/Summer Make-Up Tips:
Keep your makeup really sheer and tinted moisturizers with an SPF are the best thing to do that. For the warmer months try an airbrush makeup. they’re amazing to lightly apply your makeup. It’s light, fine and it’s cooling to your skin, while layerable and easy to touch-up, and won’t settle into lines. To turn winter shades into summer shades of makeup, take a more darker shade and combine it with a little bit of Vaseline or little bit of aquaphor to make a color a little to much more sheer. Another neat thing you can look for is a convertible color, like Stila Custom Color Blush (available at Sephora), is a product that is bight pink wash. It looks really crazy in the pot but when you put it on it adjusts to your skin type, and skin tone as your color changes through the seasons.

Tips

How do Mom’s decipher what is “chic” and what might be considered too sexy?

There’s a few different rules, you never want to reveal too much skin, you want to be sexy without being revealing, because you see these women dressing too sexy for their own good whether their skirts are too short or their necklines are too low, there’s the rules like the 3:1 rule which is three parts covered for one part revealed. And it’s a rule that applies to everyone not just Mom’s, whether you’re going on a first date, picking up your child from school; it’s a good ratio to esteem. So one, not showing too much skin and two is picking things that are tasteful. I’m a big fan of dresses. Same for Mom’s come spring and summer dresses are such a good way to feel really pretty, feminine, they cover up figure flaws, and when you wear them people tend to ask “where are you going?” It’s not something to look chic and beautiful in but it’s again still comfortable and feels pretty. A pretty dress especially for spring and summer this season will have exotic flowers and paired with a wedge, which is also hot, is a great look for Mom’s. It’s like your getting some height; add some sexiness to your legs, but you’re able to walk and it’s pulling some easy fashion trends from the runway. And it’s incorporating those easy fashion trends: Runway to Momway. (It’s where you can bring something from the runway and incorporate it in everyday life.) Instead of wearing frumpy old sweats all the time, which we can all get in the habit of doing.

Tips to Help Reduce Cellulite:
Try Nivea’s inexpensive cellulite creams and patches. Or you can make your own cellulite at home treatment with coffee grinds. Apply the grinds to your legs and wrap with saran wrap. Keep it on there for about fifteen minutes and then get in the shower and rinse it off, and you’ve got your own cost-effect at home cellulite wrap. Get a long dry brush and brush the areas on your legs where you have cellulite, in a circular motion. The stimulation will break up fatty deposits, help to prevent cellulite, and exfoliate your skin. No matter what cellulite treatment regimen you have this is important to do for everyone. Try VelaShape treatments, they have a Beauty After Baby program designed especially for moms who want to get back in shape. Self tanning is a great way to help reduce the look of any cellulite and to get your skin looking great, you can do it at home, again I love the spray on ones Gerlain has great spray on bronzers.

Skin Care Tips:
Make sure you use SPF. Try to stay away from using too many of the same product. For instance if your moisturizer has SPF in it, it’s not necessary to cake on more sun screen, as it will make your skin look chalky or greasy. Dermologica has a product that is an SPF booster, SPF 30 and its drops that you add to your primer or foundation. Another great product skin primer product is Miracle Skin Transformer. It’s basically a tinted primer but also has a SPF so its different than a tinted moisturizer in that it actually helps fill in the fine lines and wrinkles and even out your skin tone. Instead of waxing & razor burn try sugaring. There is a new kit called Shobha that is a sugaring kit. Sugaring is something they do in the Middle East in India, they combine sugar, lemon, and then water. Shobha has done this kit for you at home so your not doing all the mixing and it comes with washable reusable denim strips as well, and what’s great about the sugaring it’s all natural so your less likely to get reactions, you can use it anywhere on your body, and it kind of looks like a wax and acts like a wax where your taking the gel mixture applying it your skin and using the strips to remove the hair. It’s also super easy to clean up.

Celebrity Hairstylist Riccardo Maggiore

So I see that you were born and raised now through Europe, transformation. in Cantania, Sicily, when did you know Essentially sometimes we have to come up that you wanted to be hairstylists? with the ideas that are more original. When you see something that has already been I was only 14, at that point I was dealing done, and re-done, it’s time to change. with my own products at first, you know, You can’t expect someone to change when you’re at that age, you don’t know it, You have to change the ideas before if that’s going to be your career, but you someone puts it out there. try. So at 14 years old I decided to do hair. What would you say are some sexy hair

using a polished, framed-face look. How do you take a client’s features into consideration when transforming their hair? I look at the shape of the client, and another important issue is what they have before they create a new look. Because if they had a square look, maybe we can suggest something that can soften up that look, and make that face look much more attractive and sexy and enticing. So I consider the look they have before, how they’ve been wear it, how much they’re willing to change, what kind of face they have.

What do you feel you’re most known tips for Spring? for? The idea I always like, is the sexy way Probably, the way I like doing hair, to get your hair done shouldn’t be clean with passion, love and the exciting it should be a little unpolished, a little bit involvement and I’m always trying to uneven, that kind of mess undone work. Well it depends on what kind of look they are trying to get, straight, wave, or curl. Anything they trying to achieve, it has to be done in a way that isn’t neat. When Where do you draw you’re inspiration you do a straight look, when you finish that straight look, mess it up. Put the hair from when doing hair? down, or put some pomade in. Yes, of course. I do have many other products that substitute that look, but I think products have been improving every single year. Everyone that comes out with a product it gets better, and better, and better. A comparison would be a Kerastase shampoo, they have some very gentle products. But a lot of lines are actually starting to promoting this

idea of having PH-balanced products, for routine look. Sebastian has a lot of products like that too, easy for every day. It balances out the hair keeping hair shiny and silky. How does sulfate in shampoo affect the hair? I’m not a chemist, I can’t describe the exact combination of the product, but you know for sure when you use a product with a high percentage of sulfates, it fades the hair color. How much of it in the product makes a difference. For sure you should use a PH-balanced shampoo. You can feel the difference when you touch the product. How has being in the Sex and the City movie affected your salon? Not much. I mean, it’s nice in part. But it’s not just that, we’ve been doing PR and marketing since day one that I opened. I think we should never stop doing that, maybe that’s also part of the reason my salon was in Sex and the City. It’s important to always let people know what we’ve been doing, what we’re creating, and what we believe for the future. And spread the news. The impact, I don’t want to say was major, but it definitely influenced business. Tell us about your line of products. Some of the products in my line are shampoos, conditioner, and luminosity products. You see, my problem was if I used more than the regular amount of product needed, the hair would be still be oily after. With my luminous product, after I blow dry the hair, the hair feels absolutely clean, healthy, silky not oily or heavy. There are many products, including big brand names, that when you use them make your hair feel heavy or oily even after washing. That’s a gentle product, and there’s a product for volume, one is a product to volumize and one a hair spray. You can read about all my products on my website (www.riccardomaggiore.com). What are your tips for keeping hair less oily during the Spring and Summer?

In Spring, it gets warmer, and hotter out there. Try to wash your hair a little more often. It depends on the person what kind of hair they have. Using the right shampoo helps too. Wash the hair more, if you sweat more. What are the hot Spring trend colors to look out for? Blonde is always going to be there, forever. When I see colors that seem exciting, they’re colors that are in between, I like a reddish color. I think that can be a really hot color, rather than a regular blonde or brunette. Not Your Typical Rapper
scheduled for a 2012 release date. He’s also been announced for Streets on Fire with Jamie Foxx, and landed the starring role of John-117 Master Chief in the upcoming movie Halo (based on the video game). There was some hating from online bloggers saying that he doesn’t fit or match the description of John-117, to which he responds, “He’s always behind the mask. You never see his face.” “I enjoy the haters, to tell you the truth. I love them. Without the haters, I would feel that I’m not doing right. I would feel that I’m not doing anything to the best of my ability. The haters, I take them as my fans as well, because what they do is they motivate me to become stronger and produce stuff that’s going to be even better. I just shake them off and just continue to do what I do. I pass it and let them go on ahead as my little cheerleaders with the pompoms cheering me on. It’s going to make them eventually turn around and read about me and people are going to wonder why they’re hating on me. There’s always going to be haters as well as lovers. So I’m not concerned about it. Hey, I love everybody in this world regardless of what they do or what they say.” “My message to up and coming aspiring entertainers would be to stay in school, stay away from the negativity. If you come across the negativity, try to associate yourself with positive people. That would be the biggest inspiration to yourself. And never let anyone tell you that you can’t become something that you want to become, because yes, you can. It takes a lot of hard work; you just have to keep driving forward at it. And just stay focused and let no one tell you different than that. That would be my words to the young up and comers or those already doing it, continue to stay focused and don’t let anything take your attention or focus away from what you want to continue moving forward with.” A supporter of Watering Seeds Organization and Britti Cares, Lil’ Mirkk gives back to our veterans and children with terminal cancer. He had one last thing to say, “Runway Magazine Rocks! You guys are the best!”
Article by Bo Nicole Capener

il’ Mirkk started out as a child actor at just four years old starring in commercials and the opening credits of the show Chico and the Man, with Jack Albertson and also Freddie Prinze Sr. As he got older he was inspired by LL Cool J’s lyrical content, and became a rapper himself. He was Def Ice back then and after doing an album calling Seeing is Believing he took a break from music and is now back as Lil’ Mirkk. His personal experiences are what inspires him. “Life, what goes on, change that I feel needs be to changed, so I like to pretty much speak my mind rapping what’s going on around us.” Contrary to his stage name (mirkk standing for murder), he says he’s not a murderer, it means he kills it on the microphone. He’s currently working on a new album (to be titled WTF and released on Def Jam Records) and he’s not your typical rapper. He’s actually a rapper that has a positive message of peace and love. “The inspiration for this new album that I’m working on is basically I want to deliver a message. I always said I wanted my voice to be heard, and now I finally have a voice that can be heard. Usually I’m a positive person; I’m a great speaker. I’m good at delivering messages to the youth. I worked with one kid who became involved with drugs and so forth, and I totally have turned his life around 360 degrees. Now he’s doing really good, and he wants a career being a chef. I’ve had a lot of people say I’m a really great speaker, so I felt that if I were to make an album, you know, bring it back out there. I will deliver strong messages that would get a lot of people thinking. I think it’s going to be a big inspiration. I think I can change a lot of minds and try to help this world. Even though it’s going to be hard, to come to peace instead of the wars, instead of having hatred towards one another, or thinking that men are better than women – which I don’t believe in. I think we’re all created equal, women and men are just the same. The same thing that a man can do a woman can do just as well. I strongly believe in that. I love all races and all faces. I’m for the love of peace, peace of the world.” Aside from his musical project in the works, he’s co-starring as Stringer in Battleship (based on the game) with Rhianna, Alexander Skarsgard and Liam Neesom,

Margo is definitely not your typical pop-star. She doesn’t like to think about the same kinds of topics all the time. She says, “You don’t always have to sing about love. You can sing a song about 3D glasses, and other cool stuff.” She wants her music to be something authentic, while telling a complete visual story and painting a picture of a whole. Her big music inspirations are Prince, Madonna, Julian Casablanca, Outkast, Cee-Loo, south rappers, “because they perform like rock stars.” In general, she just loves great art and gets inspired by paintings and visuals. Creativity is what drives her and she’s found a way to give back a piece of herself to the fans with her custom-made platform heels. Margo would be looking for heels for her shows, and couldn’t find exactly what she wanted to express. So she started making custom platforms for herself, which are made of stripper heels fused with throw-back Converse shoes (old or new). She designs a variety of styles that include leather, metallic paint, and studs, and is seeking to team up with a shoe company to bring them into stores. Currently they are made to order (available on her website), and it usually takes about 3 weeks for to get them completed. It’s something she would wear and she made it herself. They’re different, original, and nobody has them. She envisions a one-of-a-kind girl that likes to do her own thing wearing them. Margo also makes her own outfits. Her fashion philosophy is to be who you are but be authentic. “It’s really hard to download who you are. You can get so much inspiration from things and places. It can change often it just has to

She’s a girl that’s out of this world. Margo is an up and coming singer/songwriter on the verge of taking off. Her music is a fuse of futuristic electronic sounds and pop melodies that resemble a throw-back to the classic 80s sound of Prince and Madonna, who are some of her favorite influences. She’s got a unique flare to her style, making a lot of her own outfits; she’s a creative art and music loving Leo.

Originally from Canada Margo’s parents are from Jamaica. They moved to a predominately white suburb right outside of Toronto, where she grew up and was one of three black kids in school, which obviously made her stand out, but she says, “in a way that everyone got along and it wasn’t like she was any different. It was like second nature.” Growing up, her sister had a friend that had a music studio. Every day after school she would go to studio, hang out, record tracks, and write songs with pop melodies over underground hip-hop tracks with her friends. Her dad never wanted her to do it, as her parents were old school. Their mantra was that music is a hobby and not a real thing. That was the origin of her learning to be an artist, and she never looked back. The songs that Margo writes are driven by space, “and how we’re so obsessed with the future or what’s coming next. We forget this is the future now; the future that someone once dreamed of.” She loves to mix pop culture into her modern, danceable, and futuristic music, which is inspired by 3-dimensions, electronics, the internet, and how stars and superstars are on the internet. True to form with the Age of Technology you can’t have one without the other.

come from you. Trends and fads come and go and work for some people but it takes time to find who you are and how you want to dress. Authentic to you is the best philosophy, but make it your own style, as long as it’s you and you’re comfortable. Don’t just follow trends because it’s easy, dress how you authentically feel.“ She grew up thinking she was going to be a fashion designer, and attended Fashion Design School at Ryerson University in Toronto, (the best school in Canada for design). She says she learned so much there. It was just at the time the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs were coming up and it was her first time in New York. She befriended her classmates and they’d take her to shows. That’s when she really got into her personal style of dressing, and really learned what she wanted. Margo had the amazing opportunity to intern for Betsey Johnson, but she quickly learned that she wasn’t going to be happy sitting in an office all day designing clothes. She was bored by the technical aspects of fashion. “There’s so much structure that goes into it. But it’s not as fun as everyone thinks.” She also didn’t want to be confined to the box of only catering to clientele. She wanted to fuse her fashion design with her music and all her art and she didn’t know how to separate them. Eventually she dropped out of school; fibbing to her parents she was still enrolled. Of course they found out. That’s when she had to explain to them she had to follow her heart, and she says, “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.” She used to want to be in an all-girl rock band, but didn’t want to spend the time in putting it all together, she wanted to just rely on herself. She started teaching herself the guitar and went to open mic nights in Toronto, and New York when she was there, just to use as practice, but wouldn’t tell anyone she was playing. She’d learn to play songs with solos and perform them. She ended up connecting and jamming with producers and other writers she met there, and asked them how to solo, to which they responded, “You have to learn some structure.” So Margo began taking lessons, getting the rough foundation that she needed to know where she wanted to go. “Go where you want, there are no rules.” She was writing for other artists, when a friend of a friend introduced her to her current producer Nikko Smith and his production team Jaakko and Yardley. Her first EP with him was called Animal House which was a more indie-rock infused with an electronic sound. Margo’s new EP is called Illegal Alien. “We forget that this is a future dreamed of, like cars and computers.” She describes her new sound with, “like a roller coaster ride on mars, but with pop melodies.” 3D Glasses is the first single off the EP and then the full album will be out April 2011. The album is inspired by the future, space invaders, and hidden messages like one day soon we might need our 3D glasses on to read a message on a poster. It’s an electronic album but with hot vocals, groovy rhythms, and tweaked guitars so you can’t tell it’s a guitar sound. Her shows are high energy, where she plays guitar then

switches up the vibe jumping on the electronic drum kit. She’ll be going on tour as a one-woman band to promote Illegal Alien starting with a show in Costa Rica in March 2011. Then she’s going on a 14 city mini tour. She’s currently in the studio finishing her full-length album to be released in the summer and coincide with a nationwide tour. The highlight of her music career so far is people being inspired by what she does. “It’s the best when they say, ‘I love your songs, I love the story, you inspired me to do an album, or pick up a guitar or start an all-girl rock band.’ A 16 year old girl hit me up, and said she wants to play the guitar. I love that, it’s so awesome to see that maybe in the future she’ll be 10 times better than me, but it was me that inspired her to pick up the guitar.” Margo’s fully enjoying the response of the people and building her fan base. “Once you put it out there, then it’s not for you anymore.” About a year from now Margo will have launched her Margo Invaders, Japanese collectible robot toys, inspired and designed by her. She loves and collects Barbies and Japanese toys, “They’re not like regular toys, they’re toys adults like and want too.” When I asked her where she hopes to be in 5 years, she said, “I used to know but I don’t know anymore. I really just want to be alive, healthy, writing performing, and creating art.” Keep up with Margo, her shows and creative projects at www.margoworld.com

Interview with Celebrity Eric Roberts
I have been a fan for a long time and am happy to see your face in just about everywhere lately. On TV with the celebrity rehab, in the biggest group of super action heroes probably ever in one movie Stallone’s The Expendables, and now it’s official, you have achieved super star status when you have a starring role as the President of the United States. Can you tell us about First Dog your new movie, where your co-star is a dog? I bet it was quite a change from the bad guy roles you have been chewing up and spitting out monster performances this past year. First Dog is pure feel-good. It is one of the most honest, heartfelt movies I’ve done, and I guarantee every child, and therefore every family, will be delighted by it. I’m in love with this movie. What do you do to stay in shape? I understand you are a vegan... is that right? What can you eat and still call yourself a vegan... What do your daily meals consist of? And when did you become vegan? I’m Vegetarian now. I eat lots of salad - no dressing, just dark lettuce. I drink room temp water. I love tofu lettuce wraps. I chop up broccoli and sprinkle it on everything. I love soy frozen yogurt and vegan pizza. I try to eat a banana every day.

Nicolita Swimwear Designer Interview

Janice Dickenson recently featured you on her reality show in which you are seeking out a new swim wear model. Was Janice trying to persuade or alter your decisions when choosing a winner? Oh no, not at all. Janice was very genuine about wanting me to be happy with the right model that represented Nicolita the best. After the girls got into hair and make up, it truly was a hard decision to pick Nicolita. CeCe shined in the photos and nailed the Nicolita look. What features are you looking for in a model representing the summer swimwear line? I usually look for a model that has expressive eyes, exotic features, and sexy curves to show off the Nicolita product. We have a ‘conservative sexy’ style, so the model also has to be very conscious of her body poses and movement. The Nicolita brand tells a story each season and that model is the most important element to telling the story. Where do you draw your inspiration for your line and how does your Cuban heritage also play a role?

My inspiration for the Nicolita collection each year comes from the ‘Nicolita character’ that I created. I design the line around her life-style; where is she going? what is she doing? and who is she with?. She’s a sassy Cubanita that is adventurous, sexy and fun. My Cuban heritage plays a huge role in my design and brand style. Both of my parents were born in Cuba and left during 1959 when my mom was 14 years old and my dad was 18 years old. I grew up with my parents and grandparents telling me stories about Cuba and showing me old black and white photos of family gatherings and homes. The stories and photos were my only tangle connection to my parents homeland and heritage. I had been yearning to travel to Cuba all my life so when I created Nicolita, I wanted the brand to recapture what my parents Cuba might have looked like. Using my parents stories and photos as my inspiration, it has helped develop my brand and connect with my heritage on a professional and personal level. What kind of woman do you see wearing your suits? We have customers that are all over the map, from our college spring breakers, career driven jet
135

setters, to our hot mommas on vacation. Our loyal Nicolita customers have grown throughout the last eight years and look forward each season to our unique and flattering styles. What is your favorite piece from your new 2011 collection? I actually have two favorite pieces from the 2011 Collection. First is the El Cubano and the second is Coppelia. The El Cubano has a Cuban sandwich print on the top and red checkered table cloth on the bottom. I love Cuban sandwiches so it was a personal design I wanted to see come to life. The Coppelia collection I think is our most unique concept for 2011. It features laser cut polka dots top and bottom overlays that will convert any colored solid bikini or print into a fun polka dot for the season. What do you take in to consideration when designing a new swimsuit? When designing the line each season, I always think of creating new and interesting styles that are functional and comfortable. I love designing swim wear and the challenge of keeping it fresh, fun, and unique every year. What elements of your swimwear make it ‘curve conscious’? Curve conscious Nicolita designs flatter you in areas that you either want to cover up or accentuate. Most of our bikini bottoms are cut and sewn with our signature “No Pinch Fit” sandwiched elastic and scrunch bum backside. The elastic is sewn in between the lycra so you do not get the digging or pinching sensation on your hips. The scrunch bum hugs your backside and gives your bum an attractive ‘heart-shape’. Our most popular style that features this technique is the Knotty Nicolita. How did the trip you took to Cuba in 2009 impact you and your brand? My trip back to Cuba was that ‘next chapter’ moment for Nicolita and me personally. It truly brought the Nicolita brand full circle and connected me more with my Cuban heritage. All my life I had wanted to take this trip back to Cuba with my parents but there was too many
136

obstacles to overcome. One being my parents resistance to traveling back to Cuba and second the legality of traveling to Cuba as a US citizen. When Obama eased travel restrictions for Cuban Americans in April 2009, that was my ‘cue’ to get trip organized and convince my parents that they had waited 50 years and it was time to return ‘home’. The entire trip was filmed and created into a Si TV original documentary called, Pastport: Cuba The Search for Nicolita. The documentary aired in November 2010 and I have received so many incredible e-mails and messages from viewers from all over the United States. This is the story of so many other Cuban and Cuban Americans and I feel blessed that people got live vicariously through our experience and perhaps be inspired to travel back to their homeland. Where can we find your swim wear line? Nicolita swimwear is available at specialty boutiques and online. Visit www.mynicolita.com for a list of store and online retailers. Tell us about some of the charities you support? Over the last eight years I have supported various local charities, scholarship funds and school fundraisers. We usually donate product for silent auctions or live auctions. It feels good to know that Nicolita is able to give back and make a positive impact in the community. Since my trip back from Cuba, I have also become a supporter of UNESCO that is currently helping to preserve and restore nine World Heritage sites in Cuba. What are you working on/ looking forward to with the future of your brand? Currently I am working on the 2012 Collection samples, photo shoot, and runway show. It takes months of preparations to create, develop, and package a new collection each year. Also, I’m basking in the moment of the incredible accomplishments that 2010 brought and the launch of our 2011 collection this month.

Interview with Celebrity Designer & Project Runway’s Rami Kashou

W

e had a chance to catch up with the very talented fashion designer, Rami Kashou. Know for his draping techniques, he was the runner up for Project Runway Season 4. Some of his celebrity clients include: Dita Vona Tese, Heidi Klum, Jessica Alba, Patricia Heaton, Kim Kardashian, Penelope Cruz, Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, Fergie, and Jennifer Lopez Originally born in Jordan, you grew up in Ramallah? What was that like and how was it different than Los Angeles? I was born in Jerusalem, which is a city a half hour from Ramallah. I was raised in Ramallah, I pretty much was there for 18 years. You know, it’s a different world. I grew up in a politically complex, obviously, situation where activities were very limited due to the occupation. So there was a lot of free time on our hands. It was like school to the house from the house to school. Therefore I kind of developed this passion for fashion sketching, ever since I was around seven. So it got to a point where I would just skip my homework and just sketch till two or three in the morning. Through that I started designing more and more collections and sort of being more inspired and creating more ideas, which led to me pretty much designing for my mom at the time and her friends. They would buy fabric and go to the seamstress, and I would go with them and pretty much explain my design to the seamstress and she would make the dresses that I was designing. So that was my first hands on. So you were seven when you knew you wanted to be a fashion designer? Yeah, ever since as far as I can remember, seven or eight I was sketching at that age, I pretty much grew up with the idea that one day I would become a fashion designer because I have this deep passion for it. Your mother was a former Miss Jordan. Do you think that engrained a sense of style and beauty in you from early on? I think she opened my eyes. I can’t remember because she passed when I was three. But I think she definitely opened my eyes to fashion. From what my grandma would tell me, I used to go to the closet at the age of three and pull things for her to wear. So I’m sure it had an influence on me, and she was known to be a lover of fashion herself. I think it somehow gets

transmitted through to me, obviously, one way or another. What inspired you to come to America? First, I have family here. And I think that for a lot of us who live abroad, there are more opportunities. I think I came for better opportunities, for a better future. I have family in California, and the whole plan was to study fashion design, because there weren’t many fashion design schools back home to begin with. It was all these reasons combined; I believe it was 1995 I came here. That’s when I started taking courses in design, which led to eventually leaving the school because I wasn’t really learning. It was not a hands-on type of school at the time, it eventually closed. But I just kind of started learning on my own, while working retail. How did you get your start in Los Angeles when you first came out here? When I first I came out here, I went to school, then after about 5 months I decided I’m not learning anything, I couldn’t understand patterns. The classes were over-stuffed with students. So I decided to leave and I wanted to keep learning. I stayed in the circle of fashion, where I worked in retail. I worked at a boutique, it’s no longer now, but it was during the time when Melrose Avenue at its height. It was before 9/11, it was like the tourist attraction for shopping basically. So I worked there for a long time, which led to eventually going to Paris and London buying for the store. But during that time I asked my father for his help to buy two sewing machines, so I bought two industrial sewing machines. I was sewing at a very small studio where I lived in on Hollywood Boulevard, and making one-of-a-kind pieces and then selling them at the store at the time. Eventually, stylists would come in and pull them and I started selling them through celebrities. My first celebrity clients at the time were Aaliyah, the singer, and Tori Spelling. And from there, I eventually started making calls basically, and making appointments with boutiques, whoever would take my calls. I was able to get into two great boutiques, one in Hollywood, and one in Silverlake, on the East side of LA. It became sort of an opportunity for press. That’s when Gen Art, which is the non-profit organization that sets up fashion shows discovered me, and it led to my first fashion show. We hear that you are a self-taught designer. Was there any sewing training or pattern making that you learned
141

growing up? No, not at all. I honestly learned sewing from buying the sewing machines and basically making tons and tons of mistakes. Same thing with pattern making, I think I didn’t know all the rules. So what I would do is I would go to Goodwill or go to secondhand stores and buy a two or three or four dollar jacket or dress and pretty much take it apart, iron it, and trace it on paper, and try to understand what that pattern looks like. And I think because I didn’t learn the basics, that’s when I discovered draping. I would take yards of fabric and wrap it around leading to a silhouette I would like. That’s where that passion grew stronger; it was through that process as well. You were already an accomplished designer before you went on the show Project Runway. Did you know you wanted to sign up for the show? Or did it sort of find you? I think it works both ways. I was curious about the show during Season 3 so I auditioned during Season 3. Then I kind of weighed out my options. I felt at the time for me, it too much of a sacrifice. I was selling to about 40 boutiques at the time, and it was a huge responsibility to leave for a month possibly and do the show, so I decided to pass. For Season 4 casting, they had called me and asked me to come down and reconsider. And I just felt at that time it was perfect timing, I had a different outlook on it, that this is an opportunity for press. Yes it’s a gamble, but without taking that risk bigger opportunities may not come. I’m really glad I took it, even though I didn’t take the prize. But I took a lot of exposure with me. It’s been since February 2008 when the show wrapped. The beauty of this is that it’s just starting to air on television channels all over the Middle East, literally in the last few weeks. So the show is playing somewhere out there, and it’s still generating exposure and business for me as well. In 2008 when Project Runway Season 4 wrapped, you were quoted in an interview saying that being on the show hadn’t really made that a big a difference in your fashion career yet. Now, its Spring 2011, have your feelings on that changed? Definitely, I’m not sure when that interview was. But it was probably too fresh, like it was still in the middle of it all. I think later, as some time passed aside from just the notoriety, people know who you are, and then opportunities came by. I think I answered that question in reference to being known and being popular at the time was not so much effective, I mean it is to a point effective for a business, but in terms of real business opportunities they probably hadn’t happened at the time. As time passed, HSN came, the Home Shopping Network, it was a great opportunity for me to be a part of. It led to other business venues, for example meeting the Queen of Jordan in New York and designing for her. We have a great ongoing relationship. Doing different shows, in Puerto Rico, going on speaking
142

engagements, and so on and so forth, and now Papyrus and other ventures that were great and of course clientele, from brides to special orders to other boutiques who are interested. What was being on the show like for you? Stressful, we know, but how would you describe it in a nutshell. Umm, how would I describe it? Let’s see. In a way, you feel like you’re…. You lose a sense of privacy of course, that’s a given, to the point where you lose along with your wallet your cell phone, the exposure to TV, magazines, the outside world. So that was a little bizarre, I think in general. What’s more interesting about it is you instantly adapt to that environment. But I think the biggest challenge is challenging yourself, to reach your utmost creativity and being able to perform fast. So I think it was a month that had a super high intensity type of feeling, where everything was intense, from any specific situation or mishap, or any comment, or every minute that passes by. Everything was almost like turned on blast. So it was a super intense situation creatively, emotionally, physically. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience. Would you do it again if you had the opportunity in retrospect? I probably would. I probably would. I personally thought that you were going to win; I thought you should have won, but the politics of the show are that of reality TV. Do you feel like the judges were trying to put you in a confined box that you really didn’t belong in? Thank you and yes. And I don’t say that because I’m bitter about it. I’m not at all. I benefitted from this whole experience in my own way. But I feel like yes, the judges were at times too critical and unfair towards boxing me in to a repetitive style and signature, which eventually led them to say I have the strongest point of view out of all the designers, I remember that’s what Nina said. That was a huge compliment during the finale. But the other designers were doing the same thing. They were repeating their signature, but they were sort of put in a corner at the time. I think it kind of all came to me after the show, right after Heidi Klum announced the winner, as I was saying bye to her and she approached me and she said, “You know, you live in LA, I live in LA, I would love for you to design some looks for me.” I thought that was very interesting, because I thought “Wow, she likes my works, and she wants me to design for her, even though I didn’t win, but she asked me.” So I thought that was very telling to me, that sometimes what happens on the show may not necessarily be everyone’s personal opinion and take. You know what I mean; it becomes a group decision at times. And that’s fine. I’m happy for Christian. I feel like everybody has their own time. It was just his time; you just have to accept that. I ended up designing for Heidi, and she wore drape

and non-drape dresses of mine, and that was never an issue. LA, and it’s this beautiful silver spaceship looking building, that’s all silver, yet it had really beautiful organic What inspires you to design for women? elements. It was all about lines. So I wanted to play with I think women themselves, to be honest. I think women lines and shapes. I created the collection out of black and offer the freedom to redefine and retranslate the woman’s white. I sketched up to maybe 60 sketches, and I think out figure, the woman’s body. So it’s like a form of art. I of those 60 certain ones stand out and that’s what creates think that the outline of a woman’s body, and just the the collection for me. Other times it starts as a feeling. If characteristics of a woman and how they embrace new I’m envisioning something flowy and light and airy and ideas, and they are proud to present new fashions and new dreamy, I may start playing with fabric like chiffon and start sort of definitions of fashions, or definition of styles and sketching based on those materials. It all varies you know. outlines. They give me that inspiration. Naturally, I can be inspired with a storyline or a movie or a building, but I What fashion designers inspire you the most? think in general it’s the elegance, the sophistication and how I’ve always looked up to Alexander McQueen. I think delicate women are, I think all these elements inspire me. Valentino is an amazing designer. Those are the two designers that stand out. I love Viktor & Rolf as well, even though When you begin a new collection, does it start with an his work is very different than mine. I respect their artistry. idea for a dress that expands into a collection or a general idea for a collection that then becomes the individual Do you have a favorite dress from one of your own dresses? collections? I think it goes both ways. One of the collections I did was Yeah I do. I created this gown that is very sculptural and inspired by the Disney Concert Hall building in downtown has these like fins growing out of it and it’s built on top
143

a corset. It’s ivory and the skirt is all ostrich feathers. So it’s a very dreamy sort of fantasy type of gown. What kind of woman wears your designs? I think women who celebrate femininity and art. Women who are proud of their femininity and elegance, women who are thinkers, who are self-confident or want to feel more confident, and I think overall a cerebral woman who wants to be festive and celebrate. Because I feel like my clothes are for happy and fun and special occasions, whether it’s festive dinner or a date or a wedding or a night at the opera, it’s all for good type of occasions. What does glamorous mean to you? When I think of glamour, I think of a magnetic quality about it. So if I think about a woman who is glamorous, I think of a quality that is admirable through the eyes of other people, like they almost want a piece of that. So I think it’s a positive quality that attracts people where they desire to be engaged with it. So I see it as a magnetic quality that really stands out. Tell us about the Papyrus dresses you designed. The Papyrus dress that I designed were pretty much a deja vu of Project Runway times ten. It’s reminded me of the Hershey’s challenge that I did during Project Runway, but on a more complex level. I designed for Fashion’s Night Out, this flamenco layered gown with many flounces out of origami. I used greeting card stationary, gift bags, wrapping paper, you name it, and everything was unconventional material, where I was able to eventually mold this sort of really grand, vibrant, colorful gown. It turned out to be really really beautiful. The second one was a tiered pleated wedding gown that had different shades of taupe and off-white, and that was made out of gift wrapping paper and Papyrus flowers that they used for bridal engagements for example. The third one was a cocktail dress, which was a holiday theme. That was really fun. It was like a big bow, it looked like a present, wrapped around the body, and it had the colors of gold, red, and fuchsia. So each one has different details and characteristics and they’re getting better and better as we go. What was that like working with paper instead of fabric? It’s very different because you’re working with a material that easily rips. So it’s like you’re discovering new methods and techniques how to make paper look like fabric. It takes a lot of patience, and in a way it feels like creating art. Because it’s not like drawing a sketch and executing it out of paper; it’s really about letting the paper decide what is possible and not possible, and discovering new ideas as you’re building one at a time. So one idea kind of completes the next during the process. It’s definitely a lot more challenging, and it takes a lot more time.

What are you working on now? I’m working on my next collection. I’m working on a line of greeting cards with Papyrus, Fashion on Paper. I’m very excited about that, I think they’re going to be really fun. They’re going to be very creative. It’s like real dresses that are going to be part of the cards, so I’m really looking forward to that. I’m also working on future projects for fashion out of paper, like gowns and dresses for Papyrus for upcoming events. You know, dealing with special orders, working with brides to be, that’s really been a focus of mine the past two and half years as well. And where can we find your designs? Right now I’m actually selling through my website, and selling custom designs. I’ve chosen a path of exclusivity. The positive thing about that is instead of just going to the store and buying it and hoping that it will fit you the right way and what not, you have the option of submitting your measurements or meeting with the designer, and having me pretty much create the design to fit your body. So it’s more of a custom experience, a little bit old fashioned, but it comes with a lot of different pluses. I read that you often times create your own clothes because it’s hard to find the perfect style and fit. Do you ever see yourself creating a men’s line? I would love to design for men. I’ve designed many pieces of mine, some shirts, sweaters, some pants. But I think that’s a different project on its own. It’s very time consuming to design just the women’s collection. I think eventually as the business grows, I would love to venture out into men’s also. Check out www.ramikashou.com to see what’s next for Rami Kashou.

Long Lovely Lashes
You may have wondered how everyone in Hollywood seems to have such beautiful lashes. Well the secret’s out. Eyelash extensions have been on the market for decades, but now more than ever women have added this procedure to their beauty routine. A defined full lashline gives the youthful appearance of rested eyes, and cuts down the amount of time it takes to do your makeup. Patricia Gregory started out in Massachusetts as a hair stylist and caught on to the eyelash extension craze years before it ever became mainstream. Patricia has been a lash stylist for well over 30 years. When lash extensions first came onto the scene, the technique was not as precise and meticulous as it is today. But it is this highly detailed technique of today that Patricia excels in, and absolutely loves it with a passion, which truly shows in the work she does, and every client experiences. In this creative process, Patricia uses synthetic silky and shiny lashes of different lengths, thickness, and shapes to a achieve the most natural and beautiful eyelashes to complement your look and style. Patricia will also blend a few colors in the application process, such as auburns, golden honey or even violet lashes, to make your eyes really pop. Your eyelashes will truly become a work of art! Patricia, as a good lash stylist should, is dedicated to perfection and personally invests herself to enhancing your eyes, whether it’s a dramatic or a subtle natural look you are going for. She caters to women of all ages, especially ladies whose lashes are very short, thin or appear barely there. But she also can make healthy lashes look even fuller and thicker. It’s crucial to find a lash stylist that has experience. Properly applied eyelash extensions do not cause damage to natural lashes. Unqualified professionals or cheap work can and will damage the eyelashes. If a technician speeds through the process, or glues a synthetic lash to a group of your natural lashes, when the eyelash extension is ready to come off it pulls out all the lashes that it was glued to. When this happens it leaves the client with only a third of their natural lashes that they had started with. This improper application and careless adhesion of eyelash extensions will also cause discomfort and pain. Patricia has seen it many times and corrected client’s eyelash extensions taking them from 25 lashes from the inexperienced technician to 60 lashes with her. Improper application will also cause your natural lashes to prematurely fall out, so beware of clumping or shortcut clustering, it can lead to permanent damage over time. Never settle for a cheap or budget job. A full set of lashes should take two to two and a half hours, any other time frame, (like one hr or three hrs), is a big red flag that the technician is either speeding through the process doing a cheap rough job, or is completely inexperienced and doesn’t know what he/she is doing. This New Orleans native began his career in music then reinvented himself as an Image Consultant. You can see his work on the red carpet, in music videos, films, and television shows. hen I sat down with Stacy at the Runway office, like a true rock-star he was running 20 minutes late for our interview, which gave me enough time to change into my heels and go over my questions for him. I knew I’d be meeting with the man responsible for crafting the images for a multitude of famous names, so I wore my business attire best, hoping he’d approve of my line of couture cinchers. He showed up in a suit that was unmistakably custom tailored. I wondered how someone like Stacy Branden, becomes a well-known Celebrity Image Consultant, that’s worked with all the top names in the industry. I knew about his successful music career with The Real Seduction, but I wanted to know how someone transitions from opening for MC Hammer to being the go-to image consultant for names like Josh Groban, Timbaland for the Sexy Back album and tour with Justin Timberlake, and also have someone as striking as Josh Duhamel wear his custom suits, to say the least.

He was humble about his celebrity clientele when I asked about them, saying “I’m thankful to have worked with a few celebrities, but I’d like to be recognized for the work I do, not the people I work with.” I learned that he was a southern boy, born and raised in New Orleans. Stacy and his twin brother ran away from home to join the entertainment business. Maybe “ran away” is slightly embellished for dramatics, but they definitely had big dreams. They grew up in an eclectic melting pot of entertainment. “When you speak of New Orleans you think Jazz; Louis Armstrong and a couple of other great names. However, New Orleans is so much more than that. There are so many talented artists and creative individuals there and there’s a certain mystique in New Orleans.” They especially looked up to those guys that sang a cappella, and sang well. They wanted to do the same thing, but in a big way. It wasn’t often that entertainment agents were coming down to the south recruiting talent. “We realized that if

we were going to make it big in the music business, we needed to they live, etc. I want to research to the point where I can bring it be seen and heard. Making it big to us was getting an album out, back to my client, and they absorb it all until they have adopted that image. At that point I can say well done and move on.” being seen on television.” Every artist starts somewhere. Their music career began singing on the street corners, just like the guys they admired. “We were pretty excited about groups like the Harptones, The Moonglows , The Dells and especially The Persuasions. I don’t know how much you know about The Persuasions, but these guys were, to us, the pioneers of a cappella singing. They would get on the corners and just do their thing. It was soulful and meaningful. It came from a great depth of love and excitement and we wanted to be exactly like them.” They were able to put together a singing group and high-tailed it to Los Angeles to make their big break. “My start was just like any other humble beginning; just getting out there, banging on doors, trying to find out where we could fit in. We had one little niche and that was being able to sing a cappella.” They quickly discovered success with their niche, getting placed in television commercials for companies like Levi’s 501, Coors Light, Milky Way and many other huge brands (25 to date). Inspired by classy, sophisticated designers like Tom Ford, Stacy is launching a limited edition custom men’s suit line. “I want to make sure that all my clients are getting used to wearing custom clothing. The reason is, when you wear a custom suit, it shows that you’re the man. When you buy off the rack constantly, it just shows you’re one of the boys.” His fashion philosophy: “When you look good, you feel good. I think it’s more important for a man to be well-dressed than to be a man who’s just dressed well.” Stacy absolutely loves what he does. You can truly hear the enthusiasm in his voice when he talks about men’s suits and image consulting. The passion in his work shows as he plays a very involved hand in designing each suit, putting together everything from the fabrics, buttons, threads, piping and lining. Like the recognizable Christian Loubitin shoe sole, Stacy Branden’s suits have a very stylish signature red lining. His new showroom is located at the W Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. A catalyst in the industry, Stacy hopes that his trend of wearing suits makes a lasting impact on the way we view style. “I think that it’s very important, because if we lose that, we lose style, class and sex appeal. Style is permanent. Fashion is something that comes and goes.”

When I asked him what it was like being in The Real Seduction, he said, “That’s all I knew. I sang with these guys for 20 years of my life. We started out in 1982 and we decided to slow everything down in 2002. After being together traveling for several years, and doing everything that we could possibly do, we needed a break. Self-Made MILLIONAIRE
Shares her story

Ali Brown

How to be SUCCESSFUL
She started out in an advertising agency and with only $20 in her bank account began an empire that turned her into a self-made millionaire. Ten years ago Ali Brown quit her job in New York City and started an email newsletter (e-zine) to help market her freelance marketing tips for writing. She started to get clients from the e-zine and eventually wrote an e-book about how to start an e-mail newsletter to share with those interested how she did it. Inspired by a wealth of online and information marketing materials she dug up, she was taking charge of her life the way the authors of the books she was reading were. As women started approaching her, She began offering classes and programs to teach others what she had done, like selling e-books online and how to create a profitable business. Now with eight employees Ali International is a multi-million dollar company. The largest part of her business is her coaching company, The Millionaire Protégé Club and the networking events she holds, like her conference for entrepreneur women. With an original vision of just paying her New York City rent, she’s far surpassed any dream she ever had. “I never had big dreams at the beginning—I just wanted something better for myself. So I advise my clients to just keep moving forward into their highest good, and you’ll be amazed at what opportunities will arise. I was motivated to do more of it. My mission now is to help more women around the world step into their power by starting and growing their own businesses.” She’s now moved onto to bigger and better dreams. “I have learned over the years you have to leave some room for the universe to work its magic! Right now I’m doing many appearances on the news—recently on Fox Business Network, and I was even spoofed in early January on Jimmy Kimmel Live! You’ll also see me this spring on ABC’s new prime time show Secret Millionaire. Filming my episode was an amazing experience. I lived in poverty for a week, survived on welfare wages, and volunteered for some amazing organizations. At the end of the week I gave away $100,000 to some well deserving people. Changed my life! And it inspired me to create a TV show that shows women of any background how to make more of their lives, and how to help themselves and their families by becoming entrepreneurs. That’s one of my big dreams.” She charges a hefty $30,000 - $100,000 for her private consulting time. To some this may sound outrageous, which she realizes. “I know to some a $100,000 investment for mentoring may sound outrageous, but I specialize in showing entrepreneurs how to dramatically increase their businesses. And I grew a multimilliondollar company in a few short years. So to many people, my advice, expertise, and consulting is worth well more than that! My biggest success story of my 18 Diamond members was a mom who increased her income from $130,000 to $2.2 million during her year of work with

me. So that puts it into perspective. “ Ali’s e-zine subscriber list tops 40,000, and has over 800 entrepreneurs enrolled in her high-energy coaching programs. She’s modest about the following she’s created saying, “I am still very much in awe of the following I’ve generated online. I made the decision early on to just be myself, have some fun, make some money, and share everything I know. I’m very personal online on my blog, Facebook, and Twitter, and in addition to my business and success advice I also give people a peek into my life and show photos of my family and my fat cat Milo, and I talk about my dating life. It seems to have worked. As the saying goes, ‘Just be yourself. Everyone else is taken.’” Giving back to women has been a life changing experience for Ali. She’s been able to get through to people that genuinely listen and care what she has to say. “As I began to experience success, I learned that many women wanted the exact same things that I did – freedom, flexibility, and creativity in their work. And let’s not forget about unlimited income. They wanted profitable businesses of their own! I realized that I what I enjoyed most was sharing my knowledge and helping other women also achieve their highest potential and best quality of life through being entrepreneurs. So that’s when I started targeting my efforts to creating programs to help women thrive. Nothing makes me more proud or excited, often to the point of tears, like when I see my clients and members have a big breakthrough, share a What are your fashion and style recommendations for dressing for the job you want?
In the corporate world, the adage is dress for the job you want. For entrepreneurs, I similarly say dress for the next level of you. If you want to be a million-dollar business owner, dress like one. That doesn’t mean blowing your rent money on Rodeo Drive, but it does mean taking care about how you look, with whatever you can afford. Invest in a few key higher-end pieces if you can, and mix and match with items lower-end stores. The good news is this is the hip thing to do these days. For example, right now I’m wearing $200 jeans from Neiman’s with a $30 top from H&M I snagged when I was in London with $130 heels from Michael by Michael Kors with a $25,000 Cartier watch—a gift to myself when I hit my first million. The top will be out of fashion in a year and likely so will the jeans and heels. But listen, I’m taking this watch with me to the grave!

success story that changed their lives, or multiply their income in ways they could have only imagined. Showing people how to make more money changes their lives. For example, one couple shared with me they finally decided they were financially able to have a second baby, because of the increased income I helped them generate in their business. You just can’t put a price on that.” And with this economy, that she calls the New Economy, (because some things have shifted forever), all businesses have had to do some reengineering, whether it’s in what they offer, how they offer it, who they offer it to, or how it’s packaged. “The good news for me is that more people are starting businesses than ever before. Women especially are using this time to reinvent themselves, and figure out what they really want. Many of them are realizing that becoming an entrepreneur is the golden ticket. So I have more people entering my programs than in previous years, and we continue to grow.” Ali Brown is living proof that the impossible can be achieved and you are only as limited as you imagine yourself to be. Now is the time to start a business and become an entrepreneur. Ali’s most important advice:
1. Honor your INTUITION. We have been
trained to ignore it, but it’s your biggest asset.

2. Follow your HEART. Start a business

around something you love to do or a cause you have a passion about.

3. DON’T FORGET the PURPOSE of a business is to make a PROFIT. Do your research
and work your numbers. You can help a lot more people by becoming wealthy than you can by staying broke.

How important do you think style and fashion is for the modern day business owner?
More than people realize. If you’re in the fashion industry of course you are already immersed in it. But I work with a lot of moms who are starting businesses from home or women who were in a corporate job they didn’t have to really dress for. I tell them it’s time to put some thought into what they look like when they walk out the door. Plus when you look great, you feel great, and that gives you a magnetic quality that is great for business. I’m told at my events I have some of the best-dressed women out there—they love looking fabulous!

4. Surround yourself with SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE who support you. Working for yourself, or

even just wanting something more from life, can be lonely. Find others who have done what you want to do, and learn from them. It’s one of the reasons I created the Millionaire Protégé Club.

Now is your time. With all the low-cost to no-cost startup options and ways to work from home, you have no excuse not to get started now. Even a part-time business can bring you great extra income and tax benefits too.

Actress, TV host, Former Model, Producer and Author

Alana Stewart
Tells all about her

friendship

with Farrah Fawcett
and how it changed her life

A

lana Stewart is a multi-talented actor, writer, producer, former model, and wife of two celebrities many consider to be two of the world’s most famous playboys, actor George Hamilton, and singer Rod Stewart. Alana Stewart is the name she presently goes by, and her friendship with actress, and world famous pin up girl Farrah Fawcett is discuss in great length during our interview with her. Her ex-husbands, not so much. When I ask Alana what’s the highlight of your life so far, she replied “being a mother, of my children.” But what about the famous playboy husbands? I don’t think Rod was really a Hollywood playboy; he was a very successful musician. My marriages were both very different. I had three children, one from the first marriage and two after. It wasn’t like a crazy rock n’ roll (party) every night; we had kids and a domestic life. Did you feel they were faithful? During the times I was married, I was in love with my husbands and they were in love with me. I wasn’t walking around thinking they would cheat on me because they had a lot of girls in their past. Certainly George is a very faithful and loyal person and I can’t say the same about my marriage with Rod, but its nothing I want to go into, maybe when I do my memoir.” Alana told us she was presently working on her memoirs.

How did you come to be friends with Farrah Fawcett? We met at a party when I was married to Rod and she just started going out with Ryan (O’Neil) and I knew Ryan a little bit. We sat together and she and I just hit it off, you know we just started to talk and surely we became friends. Over the years of friendship grew as we got older and went through different experiences of life together. We were able to share those parts of our lives and we became very close like sisters. Then she got sick with cancer and I was shocked because she was so full of life, and she loved life!

keep journals all my life. Over the two years that we were going back and forth between Germany and clinics here, I kept journals and often would read them to Farrah. She always told me she loved my writing and we would talk about them. At a certain point my agent considered publishing the journals. I didn’t know if it was something I should do because I felt it was such a personal and private thing. But after watching the documentary I realized people really wanted to know more and I felt that it would help with their own cancer, not only people who had cancer but people who were with family and friends You were friends with her for over and loved ones with cancer. She 30 years, what’s the secret? was the most courageous women We never had fights in our lives. face even though you’re worried. That took a lot out of me emotionally and physically. What I really learned from it, the reason why it changed my life so much was I realized that we really have to value life because anything can change. Be grateful for the little things like waking up in the morning and seeing the sunshine, seeing flowers bloom, being grateful for being alive and love and cherish the people in your life and let them know it. I wanted to publish the book to share what I had learned. I had a lot of problems going on in my life around this time and during this time and I was forced to put them aside because I wanted to be there for my friend and that took precedent over what I was going through and in doing that, the lesson we can all learn is that doing something for someone else you care about and not constantly thinking about yourself and your problems is so rewarding in the fact that I learned so much from her in this experience about courage, love and friendship. It’s what my book is about is called My Journey with Farrah, A Journey of Life, Love and Friendship. There were good times and so many ups and downs and we had fun and that’s what the book’s about too. It’s not a dreary book about someone dying of cancer it’s a book about friendship, it’s a book about two women and her courage and her inspiration and it’s a book about the things you learn and experience itself. She had a sense of humor and that’s what got us through. She was going through something difficult and we would find something to laugh about and we would find something to find fun and we celebrated. It was a roller coaster there were good times and bad times. I’m glad I did the books, that I published the journals. I keep it by my bed and I pick it up all the time and I’ll turn the pages and I’ll just read and I feel like we’re back there together in Germany or wherever we were, here in a clinic or even going out to eat.

Celebrity Interview with Survivor Star
A natural born entertainer Yasmin stumbled into the business with her love of an up and coming model actress to look out for.

Yasmin Spain
from Detroit, entertainment food. She’s and comedic

W

hen I first arrived at Yasmin’s place, I had a chance to girl talk with her as she got ready. The initial impression she gave me was that she was intelligent, street-smart, and business savvy. After gabbing about our exes and her love for hair, she shared with me that she had a successful salon back in Detroit, her hometown. She said, “It’s just one of those places that the strong survive. You have to really, really, really stay alert, stay on top of things, and stay focused.” It was that kind of environment that prepared her for Los Angeles. “I just woke up one day and wanted to experience something different.” She told me she didn’t know what she wanted to do when she got to LA, and actually ended up stumbling into the business by way of another love of hers, food. By way of some friends she found a way to make money and get some free food, being on set. The budding starlet found ways to turn hobbies into income by selling couture belt buckles, hang-bags, and custom made lacefront wigs. In 2009, after much protest she gave her friend a ride to an audition for Survivor. She had never even seen the show and wasn’t interested in auditioning, but the casting directors said to her, “you’ve been waiting around here all these hours, you might as well audition too, we’ll give you three minutes to talk to us, tell us what kind of person you are.” Her three minutes turned into ten, and she ended up getting cast on the show. Of Survivor she had to say, “In case anybody is out there wondering… I’m going to be 101% up front with you, I thought it was fake. Survivor is real. It’s a real show. I
162

thought it was going to be, ‘Cut!’ I go to my trailer and get a sandwich. No. I must have dropped twenty pounds in eleven days.” She originally thought food wasn’t going to be an issue, because she was used to fasting for spiritual reasons. But she learned when you’re at home and you decide to break that fast, you have food. “See, when something’s not an option it’s a little bit different than it being accessible. So I thought food wasn’t going to be a problem, but I was starving. I could not believe it. It was bad.” “When you think of reality TV, it’s just like regular TV, they have types and they cast people. Every angry thing they could find, they taped, every nasty comment, they taped. They wanted to basically make me something that I really wasn’t. But it’s okay, because again, I didn’t know what I was signing up for. They wanted to make me lazy, so every time I was napping, the camera was there.” So of course, she didn’t feel accurately portrayed, “anything to make great TV.” I asked her about the contracts and releases you have to sign to be on the show, which include a waiver stating you might be portrayed unfavorably. “You always expect the worst but hope for the best. So when you hear the latter, you might be portrayed as evil, you think, I hope not. And then you do everything you can to make sure that doesn’t happen, but then you become boring and lose camera time. So the little things they can

pull out, they do. I like to think of myself as a motivator but that can go wrong sometimes. I went to the other camp and gave them a speech about taking candy from a baby, because they were horrible, in retrospect, when it came to challenges. But they were offended. I was being honest, I’m a straight shooter. That’s a gift and a curse, for people that can appreciate it. Because who really can handle the truth. A lot of people that say they can, can’t. So that didn’t go over well.” While she regrets trying to motivate the other team when she got sent over there, she doesn’t regret the experience. She got to see Samoa and New Zealand and experience a way of life she may have never had the chance to experience. She made some good friends she still keeps in contact with to this day, but most of all it was worth her learning how to swim. She didn’t even know how to swim before she went on the show, because her sister wasn’t watching her at the YMCA and ever since then she had a fear of water. The hard worker that she is, she trained five days a week for four months and conquered that fear. And it wouldn’t be reality TV if they didn’t make her compete in 5” high wooden heels. Another thing she didn’t expect was only having a full size bed (not even an queen) and ten people spooning in it, “with funk.” She says the most memorable moment being on the show was when they competed for chickens, but you couldn’t eat the chickens, only their eggs. They waited for the chicken to lay the 1-2 eggs per day she was supposed to lay, but in the entire time they had the chicken it only laid one egg; one egg that ten people had to take a bite out of. She also said, “I had no idea I’d be pooping in the woods.” While she isn’t the lazy villain she may have been portrayed as, she definitely is Sassy Yassy. Being the youngest of her siblings she got more attention and sought the spotlight at an early age. With a warm and loving up bringing from her mother, and friend who she respects and admires, comedy is something that she’s learned warms the soul. “It fills the heart when you laugh.” She had a kick-start job in comedy hosting a comedic film review show called Cinematic Report that filmed in Los Angeles and aired in Japan, which is her favorite role to date. Landing more roles, she’s currently filming for a pilot called The Rev. “It’s about three kids and it’s a mother, and they’re all adopted. So what happens is, the father dies, but he was the minister of a church. That’s why it’s called The Rev, and they inherit a Ferrari, but it’s not a car, it’s the father’s mistress. It’s funny, they’re like, ‘Oh, we’re getting a Ferrari!’ But the oldest brother, who’s like a rock star happens to become to minister at the church. Mind you, he plays guitar, he’s like an Elvis Presley type, knows nothing about church and the bible. And when his father passes away, he’s called upon

to become the minister of the church. And he knows nothing about what he’s doing. So it’s just straight comedy all the way through.” She’s an eager multi-talented entertainer that sees hopes to be married with children in five years. While she stumbled into the business and didn’t even seek out her Survivor role that helped boost her career, she says, “Sometimes it just chooses you.”

Yassy’s Summer Tips:
Yasmin is also a licensed cosmetologist, if she had one tip to give our readers for Summer, it is USE SERUM. “Every woman should use serum. And they don’t know why or ask why. You know, California doesn’t have much humidity but it’s still a place where hair gets frizzy. And I recommend that especially non-ethnic women should use serum in their hair when it’s wet before they blow dry it. So you don’t get the static, and you get a nice, smooth, good look. That’s first and foremost. I don’t care what else you do to your hair; use serum. It takes away the frizz, and for African American women who wear extensions, serum is good to give your hair a nice oil base without it being oily.” If you’re looking to enhance or change your look and are deciding between a weave, a wig, and extensions: “Basically its preference, because they’re all the same, but whatever the person prefers, works well to their advantage. It depends on the lifestyle you lead. A wig might not be as good for some people that don’t mind going home and taking it off and kicking back. But for people that are more social and women that may workout I think a weave or extensions would be better than a wig. It all just varies. You have women that may be in the process of growing out of a natural, of course they can’t just throw a weave or extensions in, they have to wear wig. So it just depends on lifestyle, and what it is they’re looking for, and basically what their preference is. You can pretty much work with anything, when you know what somebody wants. There are pros and cons and good and bad in everything.”

As a teenager I always made my own stunning and very different dresses. Iwas the envy of my friends who begged to borrow them. When my parents went overseas for a six month holiday I thought it safe to open my pop couture boutique without concerning them. It was an overnight success and continued to grow. From where do you draw your inspiration? Simply understanding a woman’s strong desire to be adored. You use a lot of cut outs in your dresses, would you say this is your signature? Cuts outs are a lot of fun and my cut out dresses always make headlines but I also design soft, floaty, feminine, and mystical. Tell us a little about your design process? I like to drape fabric on my body or a model to feel the design the fabric demands. It’s a transformation moment. What is your favorite part of the fashion industry? Celebrity Interview with

Michael Avmen
me extremely emotional. I countered their actions with this reaction and a legitimate lawsuit. It seemed right at the time. Are you afraid your decision to press chances will affect your changes of every getting nominated for an Oscar or affect your acting career? No, not at all. I’m not worried about that. That all went away when we both settled the law suit. We never got a figure he received for his efforts (if anything), due to a non-disclosure agreement, so we didn’t even bother to ask about the settlement. But there is definitely more to Michael Avmen than his suit against the Academy. Michael you come from a big line of theatrical family members, pioneering radio, TV and film in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, what was it like growing up with a famous family in the Latino community? When I actually got into the industry, that’s when it got real and hit home. I didn’t know much of that history but I know now why I’m in this and why I love being an actor so much. It’s part of my bloodline. Theater has been in my family for such a long time. After reading and getting educated on my family, my heritage, I found it was absolutely more than just a drive, it was actually family energy carrying me through. So why did you decide to change your surname from Avila to Avmen? What significance does it hold for you? There is significance in that; it’s actually my mom’s maiden name mix with my last name. My last name is Avila, which is my dad’s name. My mom’s name is Mendez. So I googled forever Edgar Avila and Michael Avila and it seemed like there was such a saturation Michael Avilas and Edgar Avilas in the world. It was like swimming in a world of drones. So I mixed the two Avila and Mendez and put it together, Avmen and it seem to have a good tone. Nobody has that name. We read that you are a Venezuelan citizen. Are you a U.S. Citizen as well? My grandfather is from El Paso, I was born a U.S. citizen. I didn’t claim that right until I turned eighteen. So I have dualcitizenship. I was born in Venezuela but I am both U.S. and Venezuelan. My grandfather was American, my great aunt was America they both were of Latin American decent and they moved out of the United States to go back to Puerto Rico during the time that most Americans traveled in those areas

Rookie Hollywood actor and stunt-man Michael Avmen got a little more than just 15 minutes of fame last April by suing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for $50 million claiming he and his wife were held against their will for six hours while trying to attend the Award ceremony sans-tickets. Avmen claimed in his lawsuit they were on the Academy Award guest list at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles to attend the March 7, 2010 event. Avmen’s lawsuit listed illegal false imprisonment and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. He said he and his wife were taken to the Academy’s “detention center” and accused of trying to “crash” the Awards ceremony without tickets and of lying and trespassing. He said he was repeatedly questioned about how they were able to get onto the red carpet without tickets. Avmen insisted they were confirmed guests. He said he thought the Academy would hold their tickets inside the theater. After six hours at the hotel’s “resolution desk,” the L.A. police arrived and took Avmen and his wife into custody, but no charges were filed against them. That suit was settled out of court shortly thereafter with the typical confidentiality agreement. Michael Avmen got his publicity and perhaps a push towards “against the establishment” acting roles and agreed he wouldn’t attend future Academy Award ceremonies unless he was officially confirmed. Michael has supporting roles in the upcoming movies Broken Blade, Battle: Los Angeles, Straw Dogs, and Green Lantern. Here’s our exclusive interview with Michael, where he dishes the details on that fateful night, and tells us why a Venezuelan born, Texas living budding actor sued the Academy for 50 million dollars. What happened at the Awards Ceremony? In brief, we went in there asking for tickets, we had been told we had tickets waiting for us at the reconciliation booth. When we approached the booth, we were ushered to the Academy’s “detention center” and it became an infinite “just wait here” until we resolve your situation. It ended up being a six-hour dilemma, (we were) interrogated by academy security personnel, who were off-duty police officers, and basically at the end of the night they let us go. First, they took us to a sub-station and the police told us we didn’t do anything wrong, they apologized for keeping us six to seven hours against our will. That was the gist of that. It angered me and it made

and of course they pursued a career in entertainment. You have some movies coming out, Battle Los Angeles, with names like Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez and Straw Dogs with Kate Bosworth, James Marsden and James Wood not to mention Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, what has been your favorite big screen role so far in your acting career? I would have to say the Battle Los Angeles role, because I got to experience the different aspects of the movie making industry there. I started off doing stand-in work and stunt work and then moved into a day-play role as a police officer. It was a live action, lot of explosions. It was very fun. My role as a police officer in Battle Los Angeles was the most fun I’ve had in making a film. The other two films were equally as exciting. Probably because I was new, Straw Dogs was the first movie I actually got to be in with A-list actors. That was exciting to experience the whole process you take in filming and realize how much work goes into just making a single scene. What stunts have you done in the movies? Were they dangerous? Do you see more of that in your future? Oh definitely, I love anything that involves live-action and the most of the stunts I did were martial arts, some fight scenes, gun battles and the likes. I’m an experienced driver and motorcycle rider, I love anything that involves speed. I would definitely volunteer to do my own stunts in these type live action movie rolls. What is your background in martial arts? I studied Aikido at a very young age and Shotokan Karate. A mix of both those martial arts and outside influences in the mixed martial arts that I’ve practiced in pretty much since I was four. In high school, I used to teach a self-defense class for an Air Force ROTC program that I used to belong to. We’re excited to see DC’s Green Lantern finally coming to the big screen and in 3D. What was it like working on that set? The trailer looks like it’s going to be an epic. What do you think? It’s going to be an epic. Director Martin Campbell has been directing this film and you have big names like Ryan Reynolds (National Lampoon’s Van Wilder) and Blake Lively (The Town, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and TV’s Gossip Girls). Ryan Reynold is a real funny character in a lot of the roles he plays. It seems he’s going to bring that to the Green Lantern character. And just the special effects in this movie are going to be crazy! The attention to detail was definitely there and it shows in the way they built these sets, in an airport, in New Orleans. They took an airport and basically redesigned the hanger and designed an entire terminal for the snow which makes the snow very believable and realistic and of course you have the superhero aspect of the movie. Tell us about the remake of Straw Dogs coming out soon. Is it the same story as the 1971 Dustin Hoffman classic? And what part did you play? My role in this film was a football fan, shot during a bonfire in Venice beach. It seems like a very dark story compared to the original, but its going to hold true to the

original. Well the original was a dark story but Dustin Hoffman (the little hero that wouldn’t be intimidated) pulled it off. That movie was memorable because of his acting. It sounds like you’ve been working hard building your acting career. Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself in five years, with a few golden globes, on new TV shows, you know, maybe or maybe not, maybe you can forget that. I see myself in different roles, I hope what I have been doing the last couple of years will pay off. Tell us about your upcoming projects. What are you working on now? Right now I’m actually writing a story, about a solider that comes home from war and faces a butcher in his home… I don’t want to give too much away but I’m hoping to shoot that in March and it’s going to be one of my primary starring roles. I’m also working with action director Arnold Scotts, he’s got several films out right now. I’m also working on a project with Said Faraj, he’s in the film Green Zone starring Matt Damon. There are several projects in various different stages of production and I’m working with my publicist. I’m also currently in training for some upcoming roles and taking on some modeling jobs. Modeling is how I got started. What do you like to do in your spare time? I have some hobbies; my primary hobby that I like is motor sports. Anything involved in motor sports, I like motorcycles, race cars, I like working on motor vehicles, and I like tweaking motorcycles. I’m kind of a gear head, I’ve very left-brained. I enjoy going to the movies, I probably support that industry more than anybody. And of course I have a family, I have two little girls and my wife, we spend a lot of time together and we all kind of do the same thing, minus the motorcycles. They won’t get on a motorcycle. Do it find it hard having an entire family and nurturing your career at the same time? It would be difficult if I didn’t have somebody like my wife. She’s supported everything that I do. I have a big plus in that. Having a family and a wife that supports me makes it extremely easy for me to pursue this career which consumes a lot of time away from my family. These films are about to debut and it’s coming together. Acting is just a process that doesn’t give gratification instantly. So it’s frustrating to not see the fruits of your labor right away but it really will pay off. How did you meet your wife? We met in high school. Do you think all the publicity around the lawsuit has helped her hinder your career? I don’t think it went either way, It didn’t help or hinder. It generated a lot of web chatter. The general American population were like 50/50, just like reading any legal case. But it definitely did help me, though nobody was approaching me saying, “I want make a movie deal.” But it didn’t hurt in a way that I didn’t produce anything from it.

RUNWAY ENTERTAINMENT

Actress Jenn Gotzon
An actress in the 2011 film Doonby (and many other notable roles) Jennifer Gotzon is a face Hollywood will never forget. A obviously talented actress, Gotzon has appeared in dozens of films and continues to wow the world with her beauty, style, and outstanding acting.
Producer Brian Grazer with Actress Jenn Gotzon attending Frost Nixon World Premeire at London Film Festival

Your character Laura in your new film “Doonby” seems to have a country/western type of style, would you wear any of the attire Laura wore in the film in real life? The sassy and stylish designs my character Laura Reaper struts in have been put together by Patricia Wolf who was Doonby’s costume designer. Patricia has a successful western clothing line called Patricia Wolf. She and her husband Sam’s factory is located right in the heart of super small town Smithville, TX on Main Street (which is the name of the central town Doonby takes place in). She had her designer friend from Brazil Roxx send over some of the hottest jeans and accessories from the Brazil Roxx collection. I absolutely adored the line and so did several of the cast members who frequently went shopping for their significant others off the wardrobe I was wearing.. LOL…That was a kick! (i.e.. John Schneider loved the brown jeans I wore in the scene where Robert Davi’s character (town sheriff) first enters the story confronting Sam Doonby upon some mysterious unsolved situations. John seemed eager to buy them for his wife. Meanwhile, Ernie Hudson and John both wrote down the name of the blinged out belt I was wearing for their wives.) Patricia Wolf and her key costumer Quenby Landiorio also complimented our styles with Patricia’s western country designs right from her factory shop on main street. You will see me in many of her outfits (www.patriciawolf.com). My favorite was the turquoise dress I wore during my scenes with my on-screen rich mother Jennifer O’Neill. (the picture attached shows this dress with Jennifer and our British writer-director Peter Mackenzie). Patricia and Sam sent me home with a sweet parting Doonby gift .. the coolest western belt I’ve ever scene. With all that to say, I just loved the fashion on Doonby!!

in my top movies like Devil Wears Prada’s Pat Field and Chicago’s Colleen Atwood. Recently, I worked with an up-and-comer fashion stylist Joseph Martin in my recent Sony film “Crossroads” who blew my mind with his creative genius on hot fashion. He used color, texture, and lines to design and I’ve since hired him as my personal stylist, which he will be going through my closet next week to help me put a wardrobe together. Across the coast to my native country roots… my all-time favorite fashion icon comes from my family -- my younger sister Shelly Gotzon who is 21. Since she was a young teenager, I applauded her creativity as she grew into the cutest fashion styling model I’ve ever seen. She has the best eye for fashion and loves collecting clothing. Its fun for me because when I fly home to visit my family, I often go shopping in her closet’s overflow being donated to salvation army which we jokingly call ‘sister salvation.’ I’m currently wearing one of her styles. I just love my sister and so proud of her aspiring fashion achievements. She laughs at me because of some of the things I wear and has threatened me several times that she is going to send me into a reality show “What Not to Wear.” What is your one fashion must have before you leave your home? My new thigh-high camel leather boots or my sweet lacy-satin ribbon drawn leg warmers by my friend’s collection Mademoiselle Mermaid (these leg warmers are the sassiest item ever.. I adore wearing them with heels).

Management’s Keri Wilson & Monet Corso. At the World Premiere of Frost/Nixon in London, I also fell in love with my earrings by Nicole Khristine Jewelry and style put together by Sasha Gold (attached is a great shot of those earrings with Brian Grazer who produced Frost/Nixon) . You described your character Laura in “Doonby” as a woman whose sassy and independent, what types of style do you think would fit with that personality? Hmmm.. Since Laura is as Texan as they come and spoiled rotten by her daddy warbucks, I’d say a great pair of eclectic, yet classy boots, with sexy skirts and blingful belts. My favorite colors to wear are cranberry red or mustard yellow fitted tops with a statement piece of jewelry… for Laura it would probably be her diamond studded cuff or rings. She’s the type that demands all attention on her when she walks anywhere. You can see some of the look on Doonby’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/doonbythemovie (BTW - they have cool contests where they give away autographed Flip Video camera to those who follow. Its awesome, therefore you can record your style, send it to them where they may post it). Out of all your film and television roles you’ve been in so far, which role in terms of their attire, do you feel you can relate to the most? What a great question. If there was a movie that I could lounge around in my pj’s and Uggs, that would be it... LOL. On a serious note, I think it was the classy, sexy dresses, gorgeous heels, stunning designer bags, and bold colors Saleem Roberts and Joseph Martin had me wear as the role of Meghan Doherty in ‘Crossroads.’ We often joked on set how my character was inspired by the fashion of Devil Wears Prada and since that is my fashion idol… I was in love with everything I wore. Our favorite dress we called Diva Las Vegas because of how bold of a statement it was matching her vibrant, dynamic Beverly Hills personality… Just like Laura Reaper’s kicking spats showed off her Texan flair.

When you’re on the red carpet for an event such as the golden globes, what type of dress do you feel the most glamorous in? Since I’m a work in progress, I rely a lot my stylists, which you can see on the official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/jenngotzon.fanpage). I do love Oscar de la Renta, though haven’t yet Who would you consider your fashion icon? walked the red carpet in Oscar. Designer Interview: Allen Robateau

As a young designer on the rise, Allen Robateau’s clothes can already be seen on many of your favorite athletes. His designs are fresh and current, flying off the shelves, yet still exclusive. Look out for his brand Phaymus Lifestyle, with its newest line soon to be released. What got you started in the fashion business? Just seeing clothing lines that didn’t really fit my style or price range but I had to go with them anyways because nothing else was on the market. Also wanting to have my own business and my own say in style growing up to influence others. Has been one of my dreams to be in the category as a top designer and to be a mogul. What struggles do you encounter as a young designer climbing toward notoriety? Balancing my time right because I’m a college student at night finishing his degree and then an Intern for a business management firm during the day, then working on the new Phaymus Lifestyle in-between. Another is taking the criticism because everybody doesn’t want to see you succeed and older people trying to tell you want to do because of your age. Who are you biggest inspirations? My biggest inspiration is my mother. After that you got Pharrell Williams, Kanye, Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs. Who have we seen your clothing on? The two main celebrities that wear my clothes are Mateo an up and coming R&B singer and Brandon Jennings NBA Superstar of the Milwaukee Bucks. Then you have my Close friend that’s a rookie this year in the NBA for the Indiana Pacer’s Paul George. You seem to have found a niche in the sports world with your clothing, how did that come about? Just really marketed myself on social networks to athletes my age you get your no’s and yes’s and the one who said

yes love my brand and what I stand for. Most of them are role models and have people that look up to them so that brings loyal customers on board. Once you get in the sports world it’s like a huge family everybody wants to see you succeed. How would you describe the overall theme of your designs? Overall themes to my designs are clean and simple with a message. Not going to crazy with color. That reflects what the brand is about and that’s going to keep us in our own lane, which is casual/formal, dressing giving you a Hollywood look and Preppy side. I believe consistency kills competition. If you could have anyone wearing one of your designs, who would it be? If I could have anybody I would say Chris Brown. I believe he represents the brand well. He’s young, super talented, and humble overall but his style is crazy. Not scared to do something others wouldn’t and gives respect to something dope. What are you working on now? Right now working hard on the new season of Phaymus Lifestyle. “Finally Phaymus” releasing April 7th get it on our website www.Phaymuslifestyle.com. This season is going to put Phaymus on the map and show everybody my progression as a designer. Thinking of ways to involve my fan base more. Next is building the Phaymus empire and become mainstream. Last collaborate with some of the young Hollywood celebrities and athletes by the end of the year.

Giving Back

Nothing feels better than giving back

to others and the world that we live in. m.a.m.a. e a r t h is one organization that does just that while giving artists a chance to promote themselves. m.a.m.a. e a r t h stands for “Mothers About Making Amends.” The definition of “amend” is to change for the better. It is m.a.m.a. e a r t h’s mission to raise awareness and make a change for the better by helping charities raise funds to benefit their causes. It all started in 2007 when the founder of m.a.m.a. e a r t h, Jaime Kailani Bayot a mother and artist herself, created the Wish Bracelet. She found a malachiteazurite bead that resembled the earth, and it inspired her to create a bracelet that could be used as a way to raise funds in schools where the kids get to choose which charity the money goes to. Made with organic hemp string, the idea is to tie the bracelet to your wrist, make a wish, and when the bracelet eventually falls off your wish is set free into the universe. Additionally, malachite-azurite is a semi-precious gem believed to promote healing, aid in transformation and absorb environmental pollutants. Since then, m.a.m.a. e a r t h has evolved greatly, developing a whole new aspect to the organization, m.a.m.a. e a r t h Managment. Kailani and her partners Andrea Miller and Suzanne Hollingshead started hosting events to help charities which featured music showcases, dance acts, fashion designers, and painters. A typical

HOPE IN THE CITY
HOPE Springs Eternal in the LA Fashion Scene Hope In The City is the premier charity fashion event in Los Angeles. As a show, Hope in the City features not only noted emerging designers, but an array of avant garde and unexpected garments from local up-andcoming designers and artists. The show and its experimental brilliance is not the hallmark of this event; Hope in the City stands out because of the community it creates through a motley crew of creatives in Los Angeles. Organized by Mosaic, Hope In The City creates a space for fashion designers, models, hair & make-up artists, photographers, and fashion enthusiasts to all come together and use their unique gifts to serve the city and connect with one another to build a community of hope. Four years ago, a group of five gathered around a table at Philippe’s dreaming of ways they could connect their friends and coworkers to use fashion to serve others and give beyond themselves. That dream came to fruition in May 2008 with their first event at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) park in downtown Los Angeles. It was fitting that the inaugural year of Hope in the City would literally be at Hope Park in the heart of their beloved city. The event has grown considerably and so has the passion and numbers of those involved. From the first meeting of five in 2007, today there are over one hundred volunteers whose fingerprints shape this show. Each has come together with a desire to use their gifts to reach others both locally and globally. Over the last four years Hope In The City has become known as a loving force in the L.A. fashion community – giving much needed opportunities to experimental and emerging designers to showcase their collections as well as opportunities to “behind the scenes” artists to display their talents. In the Spring of 2010, Hope In The City joined LA Fashion Week as an official showcase. The proceeds from Hope In The City benefit a different non-profit organization each year. Hope In The City partners with organizations that are graciously serving the L.A. community as well as global causes.

This year, the 2011 event will directly benefit the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC), a project of ServeLA. ServeLA is a group of people who are committed to the future of Los Angeles, working to make a difference creatively, intentionally, and in community. They are an extension of Mosaic, where they strive to live by faith, be known by love, and be a voice of hope and these values are expressed through service They work tirelessly to identify areas of need in our city and champion organizations that are in the trenches, making a difference in those areas. They partner with and serve these organizations because they believe they can go further and faster together. The mission of the DWC is to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women. In a city that claims the title “homeless capitol of the nation”, non-profit organizations such as the Downtown Women’s Center are committed to serving this population. With the Day Center at the DWC serving nearly 130 women daily, and the residence providing 71 units of permanent housing, the statistics show 98% of women housed by DWC stay in some type of permanent housing long term. The Center is nationally recognized as a prototype for unique and effective programs serving homeless women. This spring, DWC is launching a new endeavor called MADE. MADE helps women by giving them the opportunity to create one-of-a kind items to be sold in the DWC gift shop thusfostering an entrepreneurial spirit as well as gaining job training. The proceeds from Hope in the City will go toward this program, with the intention of building up the opportunities for the women of DWC. Attendees are also given the opportunity to donate funds to AfricaHeart.com, a Mosaic Beyond Us project in Kenya, when they purchase their tickets. This project is geared towards sending an encouragement team focused on leadership

Hope In The City creates a community within the fashion industry that is committed to love, faith, and hope. Hope In The City longs to be a source of light in an industry that can be very difficult and harshly competitive by encouraging the use of art, talent, and creativity to not only design noteworthy fashion but also to do the most good in local and global communities Hope In The City took place on March 14th, 2011 at the Skirball Cultural Center, as part of LA Market & Fashion Week. True to its mission, the theme of the 4th annual Hope In The City is Inspire. Create. tip

Don’t settle for cosmetic shaping of your gumline if what you really need is a gum lift to improve your smile. Gum lifts typically require more extensive surgery though.

tip

Although microbrasion can get rid of many stains, if the technique isn’t as effective as expected, the dentist may mask your tooth with a crown, porelain laminate or direct bonding.

Please note that the “Thread Lift” is the one plastic surgery procedure that most plastic surgeons do not recommend getting. As your face ages, your skin becomes thinner causing the implanted threads to tear through the patient’s skin. There are better alternatives.
