Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the 2012 issue of ASET’s Annual
Salary Survey. The survey is always one of the most popular
resources at the ASET booth at tradeshows and career fairs.
Users report that the survey’s real-world ‘snapshot’ of actual
income levels is a valuable complement to the salary information
routinely collected by government and industry.
Using this Report
ASET’s salary survey asks for specific annual income figures,
along with details about the individual’s professional demographics. Members are under a professional, ethical obligation
to answer the questions honestly and accurately, and they
continue to do so.
THANKS
ASET emphasizes the substantial value of this report to its
many internal and external audiences and therefore it is
with sincere gratitude that we thank the ASET membership
for participating each year. Your involvement in this process
has helped establish ASET as a true professional organization that produces information which is widely used and
respected.
As an incentive to complete the survey, a number of valuable
prizes were awarded at random to survey respondents. These
prizes were kindly provided by the sponsors below, to whom
ASET extends its thanks:
This is not a survey of employers, nor a report of salary ranges;
such surveys are available from other sources. The survey is also
not intended to place any limitations on the compensation set
by ASET members for services rendered. ASET recommends
using a number of sources when evaluating salaries and income
levels.

Custom Salary Information
Need more specific information about our 2012 salary data?
Just ask! Custom salary information is provided at no charge as
a service to members, employers and the technical community
as a whole. Requests for field of employment, ASET membership category, location in Alberta and industry of employment
can help pinpoint salaries. Turnaround time for most requests
is three business days; please allow for extra time on more
detailed requests. For further information, contact ASET at
780.425.0626 or toll free in Alberta 1.800.272.5619.
ASET welcomes your feedback about this survey.
Our goal is to provide a meaningful, useful document
for members, employers, agencies, government,
and other organizations within the overall technical
community. Your comments and suggestions for
improvement are always appreciated and will be
considered for future reports.
2012 ASET SALARY SURVEY |
Survey data is screened for erroneous or implausible entries
to prevent against the effects of false information, perhaps
even simple typographical mistakes. Each year, efforts are
made by ASET to improve the survey in ways that contribute
to ease of use, including clarity of instructions and convenience,
all to reduce the likelihood of unusable responses.

employ ees
The consistent industry and employment categories for each
year’s survey make it possible to target specific information
and to perceive trends.
The ASET Salary Survey presents summaries of income data
as an appraisal of average remuneration for technicians and
technologists in Alberta and in the Canadian Territories. The
summaries are presented relative to technical field, experience
level, ASET certification and other criteria. Detailed income
data is provided voluntarily by ASET members using an online
form. Submissions are restricted to one per ASET member
number, and identifiers are removed.

ASET Dues: Who Pays?
Workplace benefits for technicians and technologists
are quite consistent regardless of certification level.
Year after year, the salary survey shows that a large majority of member dues are paid for by employers, attesting
to the value of certification in the eyes of industry.

The ASET Salary Survey is just one example of the many ways
that the Association, along with the technicians and technologists who comprise its membership, seeks to continually
strengthen the value and importance of its role as an advocate
for the technology profession in Alberta.
Found across the province of Alberta and the Canadian territories, our members represent a wide scope of technology fields,
as shown in the bar chart. Over its 49 year history, ASET has
grown to become the second largest such association in Canada.

Not to be confused with field of work [left], we also asked members to specify the
industry they or their firm primarily operate. The industries identified were created
using definitions compiled from Statistics Canada, Alberta Economic Development,
and other professional associations.
P.Tech(Eng.)
Among all respondents, members span the fields of applied science, engineering,
and information technologies. Although some fields are very strongly represented,
the relative proportions are similar each year. In some circles, “field” is otherwise
known as the member’s “discipline”.

Experience Ranges by Employment Level
3 Year Trends
Respondents specified their years of technical experience (in their reported field
of employment), as well as a more broad grouping called “employment level.”
Consult the Glossary of Terms on page 19 for more detail. Looking at ranges of years of experience,
we can see some indication of the types of roles technicians and technologists may play as they
gain experience.
The majority of respondents are C.E.T. employees with 5-14 years of technical experience. Comparing
the total income for this main demographic, we can see trends across fields of work. Representation
can affect reliability so please consider the number of entries when examining the data.

Average Earnings by Region
Region
The majority of respondents continue to be based in either Edmonton or Calgary (approx. 65%)
with a larger percentage of those based in Edmonton. There was a significant shift in responses
here: Edmonton lists 854 reporting in 2012 vs 582 reporting in 2011. This did not translate into similar increase in rates of response from those based in Calgary (679 reporting in 2012 vs 572 in 2011).
In most cases, however, reporting rates remained fairly steady from all other regions.
Employees in Fort McMurray continue to report the highest average total income of all
respondents who work in Alberta.
