Netherlands:PhD researcher Economic and Social History
A PhD researcher Economic and Social History is available at University of Utrecht The project is funded by European Research Council, as part of a Starting Grant awarded to project-co-ordinator Dr. Tine De Moor. In this subproject, you will be in charge of analyzing the long-term development of institutions for collective action across Europe –concentrating on NW-Europe and Southern Europe, on the basis of a number of large datasets, hereby focusing on the emergence, change and dissolution of such institutions and the role of exogenous factors such as urbanization, agricultural change, changes on the labour market in provoking such dynamics etc. Besides this study on aggregated data, the PhD will furthermore perform a number of case-studies to get a more detailed understanding of the interaction between these institutions and exogenous changes.  You will be based at Utrecht University, and be part of the research team led by Dr. Tine De Moor and will as such also be part of the department of social and economic history led by prof. Jan Luiten van Zanden and prof. Maarten Prak. Qualifications

a (research) master's degree in economic and social history, or in economics or another social science with shown interest in (economic and social) history; a theoretical background and a strong interest for relevant theory; an outstanding record of undergraduate and Master's degree work; the ability to work with large datasets.

Terms of employment

We offer a PhD position (1,0 fte) with a one year contract beginning July 2011. After a positive evaluation this contract can be extended to a maximum of two more years (a total of three years maximum). Salary will be rising from € 2.042,- a month (before taxes) during the first year to € 2.492,- a month during the third year on a fulltime basis. We also offer solid benefits. PhD students, also referred to as doctoral candidates, are expected to take courses at the N.W. Posthumus Institute, the research school for social and economic history.

You should send a cover letter and a curriculum vitae, information about your undergraduate training, a transcript of academic results, an MA thesis (or written coursework if the MA thesis is not yet available), certified copies of relevant diplomas and the contact details of two referees (names, affiliations and phone numbers or email addresses).
