In 1860, as the
railroad steamed its
way west, General
George R. Smith
had a vision.
He caught a glimpse
of the future and
persuaded the Pacific Railroad to choose an inland
route rather than parallel the river as it crossed
Missouri. He founded Sedalia in the middle of the
prairie and landed a major transportation and
distribution center right on his front doorstep.
Within a few months, on January 17, 1861, the
first Pacific Railroad Company passenger train
arrived in Sedalia.
Today’s Sedalia, with its friendly people, stately
homes and majestic buildings, schools and
churches, art and performance centers, ragtime
tradition and historic state fairgrounds, all came
about because of General Smith’s vision and the
railroads which brought it to fulfillment.
In 1955 the Sedalia Army Air Base was renamed Whiteman
Air Foce Base in honor of Sedalian George Whiteman who
was identified as the first air war casulty at Pearl Harbor.
On January 9, 1959 the “Rawhide” TV series premiered and
told the story of cattle drives to Sedalia. The series was based
on a diary written by drover George C. Duffield and featured
Eric Fleming and Clint Eastwood. Both visited Sedalia in
observation of our Centennial Celebration in 1960.
Ragtime is recognized as the first truly American form of
music. The Ragtime era occurred between 1896 and 1920. It
is most easily recognized by its syncopation. Scott Joplin is
recognized as the King of Ragtime. And Sedalia is
recognized as the Birthplace of Ragtime for it was here that
Scott composed the Maple Leaf Rag. The first piece of music
to sell over a million copies. Scott Joplin’s influence is more
noted for his skills at composition. An annual festival is held
early in June to commemorate the man and his music.
The term Missouri Mule originated between the Chicago
International Fair in 1893 and the St Louis Exposition in
1904 due to the large number of prizes going to mules bred in
Missouri. Mules are valued for their endurance, patience and
sure footedness. Louis M Monsees of Smithton was
considered the king of mule breeders in the United States.
Limestone Valley Farm, consisting of 700 acres, took many
honors at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair including Bell of
Limestone being named Grand Champion. So much ‘hype’
surrounded the Champion jack that a local brewery
manufactured and sold a beer named “Orphan Boy”. Over
three million mules were produced in Missouri in 1900.

Prior to 1000 BC, Fairs came about as a means of carrying
on peaceful trade between different tribes. The first
American fairs were associated with sheep shearings. State
Fairs transitioned into a showcase of agriculture products,
equipment, resources and technology. The first agricultural
revolution occurred between 1862-1875 and was attributed
to the change from hand power to horses. The second
agricultural revolution occurred between 1941-1950 and was
attributed to a change from horses to tractors and the
adoption of a group of technological practices. The Missouri
State Fair grounds, consisting of 396 acres, is twice as large
as the average farm in the 1800’s. The price of everything at
the first Missouri State Fair in 1901 was a nickel.

2000 by the
Department of
Natural Resources, is currently
occupied by the Sedalia Area
Chamber and Visitors Bureau,
the Railroad Heritage Exhibits,
The Depot Store and serves as
Trailhead to the Katy Trail State
Park.
The Katy Depot is Sedalia’s
offcial welcoming center and
carries souvenirs and Agri
Missouri foods.
Heritage exhibit cases put a face
on Sedalia’s heart and history.
Each “building” contains graphic
panels and artifact windows
telling the story of our railroad
legacy. Included in the exhibit is
a working telegraph, theatre and
youth activity room.
Also featured are events, annual
rotating and traveling exhibits.
This is from one of the many
historic displays the Depot
features on a rotating basis
throughout the year.

The Daum collects, preserves,
interprets, and exhibits modern and
contemporary works of art. It houses
nine exhibition galleries on three
levels with a combined area of 9,300
square feet. Through its collections,
exhibitions, programs, and publica-
tions, the Daum sheds light on the
stimulating complexity of
contemporary art. The museum
offers a temporary-exhibition series
that changes three times a year.
Exhibitions range from monographic
surveys of nationally recognized
artists, to group shows that explore a
shared theme, to the recognition of
regional artists who merit wider
appreciation. The museum also
exhibits selections from its perma-
nent collection, which includes
diverse paintings, drawings, prints,
works in clay, and sculpture created
since the mid-20th century. It
features works by Andy Warhol,
Dale Chihuly, Helen Frankenthaler,
Robert Motherwell, Peter Voulkos,
Louise Bourgeois, and Betty
Woodman.

The Sedalia Murals
Pettis County Courthouse
415 South Ohio · (660) 826-5000
Built in 1924, the Courthouse
proudly displays the Circuit Courtroom Murals. Barbara
Manes Campbell, St. Louis muralist and oil painting
restorationist, was commissioned to restore the 100-year
old painting of Lady Justice behind the Judge`s bench and
to paint murals for the remaining panels in the courtroom
depicting the history of Pettis County from the early
1800s to the present. Lady Justice, frst hung in the former
Courthouse, built in 1884 and destroyed by fre June 10,
1920. It was saved from the fre, but had never been
cleaned and restretched. After the restoration of Lady
Justice in 1997, Campbell then began the mural project
and completed them in 2002.
Located in the Sedalia Municipal
Building at 200 South Osage, the
murals are open for viewing from
8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday, except public
holidays. Eric James Bransby, a 20th
century American painter, educator,
and an authority on the history and
technique of mural painting, was
commissioned in 1976 to execute the
Sedalia murals. A mural must frst
enhance architecture, then tell a story. Our murals mirror
Sedalia-a community drawing from the wisdom of the
past and constantly looking with vision to the future. For
more information, call (660) 827-3000.

Downtown Historic
District
The elegant
facades which
grace the streets
and avenues of the
Downtown Sedalia
Historic District date back to Sedalia`s great building
era` which, in 1871, resulted in the construction of 22
brick buildings. This era was sparked in 1866 when
Christopher Demuth and W. B. Adams established the
town`s first brickyard. The Downtown Sedalia Historic
District was placed on the National Register of Historic
Places in March 1993.
Continued removal of 1960s
aluminum sheathing on many
of the buildings has revealed
the beautiful historic architec-
ture you see today. In Septembr 2006
Sedalia was selected as a Missouri DREAM
community, an initiative that
will assist in the redevelopment
and revitalization efforts of
Sedalia`s Historic Downtown
area.
Cole Camp, MO
17 miles south of Sedalia on
Highway 65 then east on
MO-52 for four miles.
Cole Camp was established in
1839 at the convergence of the
Butterfield Trail and Boonville Road. German immigrants
from the lowlands settled here and their influence has helped
shape the town throughout it`s history.
One of the first battles of the Civil War was fought in Cole
Camp and numerous historic sites surround the area. The
quaint Downtown is a National Historic District which at one
time harbored 'Battle Row,¨ that consisted of 12 taverns
frequented by rowdy railroad workers, farmers and woods-
men. The wild times of the past have been replaced by
restaurants, gourmet and speciality shops, antiques, art
galleries, the Cole Camp museum and of course a bar or two.
Spend a relaxing day strolling through the small town taking
in the sites, then enjoy a glass of wine or a fine meal to cap
off the experience.

Fairgrounds Historic District
Over the years, the fairgrounds have been the scenes
of many of Sedalia`s most memorable moments
including an airplane exhibition in 1909 by brothers
Orville and Wilbur Wright. The Missouri State
Fairgrounds Historic District contains a significant
collection of early 20th century buildings and
properties, which were
added as Missouri's first
and only permanent
state fairgrounds
expanded and evolved
during its first 40 years,
1901-1941. Four of the
original frame buildings
constructed on the grounds burned in1904 and
between 1903 and 1906 several brick buildings, still
in service, were built for use as exhibition centers.
The architectural styles range from eclectic variations
of Romanesque Revival and other classical forms to
Art Deco/Art Moderne, while the brick exposition
buildings and animal barns are clearly linked by
common elements of design and other details of
materials, workmanship, setting, size, association and
proximity. Blue prints and historic photographs
confirm that all of the most significant structures are
relatively unaltered to moderately altered.
Discover Sedalia`s history by
taking a stroll along Sedalia’s
Heritage Trial. Pick up a free
brochure and at our Welcome
Center located at 600 East Third
Street.

Sitting high atop a scenic bluff
eight miles north on Highway

Bothwell Lodge was built
between 1897 and 1928 by

benefactors, John Homer
Bothwell. It was, in fact,
Bothwell`s efforts that

Bothwell Regional Health

also owe their existence to this
visionary philanthropist.
Now a State Historic Site, the

Once the
County Seat, Georgetown
is located 4 miles north of Sedalia on Highway H.
Built in 1869 by Elisha W. Brown a local banker in
Sedalia. Mr. Brown died in 1870 and was buried some-
where on the 80 acres. The County of Pettis bought the
house and the 80 acres in 1894 to be used as a poor farm. It
was abandoned in 1988. In 1990 was purchased from the
county and operates as Georgetown Country View Estates
Bed and Breakfast.
The home of General George R. Smith was built from
bricks made on the property. Construction was started in
1842 and completed in 1847. In 1849, the home became
Georgetown Female Academy, a girl`s school for his
daughters and other young ladies of the town. The first
teacher was hired from
Boston. Today it serves
as the Georgetown Bed
& Breakfast.
The little white church
in Georgetown was built
in 1895 and named
'Stokes Chapel,¨ and is
still in use today.
Built in 1895 was the
only two-room school
in Pettis County
teaching grades one
through eight. Electric-
ity was added sometime
after 1924. It closed in
1968, and now serves as
the Georgetown Community Center.

Once the
County Seat, Georgetown
is located 4 miles north of Sedalia on Highway H.
Built in 1869 by Elisha W. Brown a local banker in
Sedalia. Mr. Brown died in 1870 and was buried some-
where on the 80 acres. The County of Pettis bought the
house and the 80 acres in 1894 to be used as a poor farm. It
was abandoned in 1988. In 1990 was purchased from the
county and operates as Georgetown Country View Estates
Bed and Breakfast.
The home of General George R. Smith was built from
bricks made on the property. Construction was started in
1842 and completed in 1847. In 1849, the home became
Georgetown Female Academy, a girl`s school for his
daughters and other young ladies of the town. The first
teacher was hired from
Boston. Today it serves
as the Georgetown Bed
& Breakfast.
The little white church
in Georgetown was built
in 1895 and named
'Stokes Chapel,¨ and is
still in use today.
Built in 1895 was the
only two-room school
in Pettis County
teaching grades one
through eight. Electric-
ity was added sometime
after 1924. It closed in
1968, and now serves as
the Georgetown Community Center.

Fairgrounds Historic District
Over the years, the fairgrounds have been the scenes
of many of Sedalia`s most memorable moments
including an airplane exhibition in 1909 by brothers
Orville and Wilbur Wright. The Missouri State
Fairgrounds Historic District contains a significant
collection of early 20th century buildings and
properties, which were
added as Missouri's first
and only permanent
state fairgrounds
expanded and evolved
during its first 40 years,
1901-1941. Four of the
original frame buildings
constructed on the grounds burned in1904 and
between 1903 and 1906 several brick buildings, still
in service, were built for use as exhibition centers.
The architectural styles range from eclectic variations
of Romanesque Revival and other classical forms to
Art Deco/Art Moderne, while the brick exposition
buildings and animal barns are clearly linked by
common elements of design and other details of
materials, workmanship, setting, size, association and
proximity. Blue prints and historic photographs
confirm that all of the most significant structures are
relatively unaltered to moderately altered.
Discover Sedalia`s history by
taking a stroll along Sedalia’s
Heritage Trial. Pick up a free

Center located at 600 East Third

Downtown Historic
District
The elegant
facades which
grace the streets
and avenues of the
Downtown Sedalia
Historic District date back to Sedalia`s great building
era` which, in 1871, resulted in the construction of 22
brick buildings. This era was sparked in 1866 when
Christopher Demuth and W. B. Adams established the
town`s first brickyard. The Downtown Sedalia Historic
District was placed on the National Register of Historic
Places in March 1993.
Continued removal of 1960s
aluminum sheathing on many
of the buildings has revealed
the beautiful historic architec-
ture you see today. In Septembr 2006
Sedalia was selected as a Missouri DREAM
community, an initiative that
will assist in the redevelopment
and revitalization efforts of
Sedalia`s Historic Downtown
area.
Cole Camp, MO
17 miles south of Sedalia on
Highway 65 then east on
MO-52 for four miles.
Cole Camp was established in
1839 at the convergence of the
Butterfield Trail and Boonville Road. German immigrants
from the lowlands settled here and their influence has helped
shape the town throughout it`s history.
One of the first battles of the Civil War was fought in Cole
Camp and numerous historic sites surround the area. The
quaint Downtown is a National Historic District which at one
time harbored 'Battle Row,¨ that consisted of 12 taverns
frequented by rowdy railroad workers, farmers and woods-
men. The wild times of the past have been replaced by
restaurants, gourmet and speciality shops, antiques, art
galleries, the Cole Camp museum and of course a bar or two.
Spend a relaxing day strolling through the small town taking
in the sites, then enjoy a glass of wine or a fine meal to cap
off the experience.

The Sedalia Murals
Pettis County Courthouse
415 South Ohio · (660) 826-5000
Built in 1924, the Courthouse
proudly displays the Circuit Courtroom Murals. Barbara
Manes Campbell, St. Louis muralist and oil painting
restorationist, was commissioned to restore the 100-year
old painting of Lady Justice behind the Judge`s bench and
to paint murals for the remaining panels in the courtroom
depicting the history of Pettis County from the early
1800s to the present. Lady Justice, frst hung in the former
Courthouse, built in 1884 and destroyed by fre June 10,
1920. It was saved from the fre, but had never been
cleaned and restretched. After the restoration of Lady
Justice in 1997, Campbell then began the mural project
and completed them in 2002.
Located in the Sedalia Municipal
Building at 200 South Osage, the
murals are open for viewing from
8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday, except public
holidays. Eric James Bransby, a 20th
century American painter, educator,
and an authority on the history and
technique of mural painting, was
commissioned in 1976 to execute the
Sedalia murals. A mural must frst
enhance architecture, then tell a story. Our murals mirror
Sedalia-a community drawing from the wisdom of the
past and constantly looking with vision to the future. For
more information, call (660) 827-3000.
