Like Son, Like Father: Surgeons Team Up in Seton Hays Operating Room
In August, Dr. Mark Dammert, a Hays County ear, nose and throat specialist with Austin ENT Clinic, needed another surgeon to join him on a case at Seton Medical Center Hays. So, like the smart son that he is, he asked his dad for help.
Good choice. His father is Dr. William (Bill) Dammert, a longtime pediatric general surgeon – and a logical choice to work with his son in an operating room. Three years ago, in a semi-retirement role while living in the Dallas area, Bill Dammert took on first assistant work and began assisting friends in all surgical specialties. Now, he assists his son in Central Texas, too. “I suspect this will be a regular occasion,” said Mark Dammert. “Of course he’s ideal in the pediatric cases I see. However, he’ll also assist with adult cases. With several decades of experience, his assistance in the OR will always be a welcome contribution.”

However, Bill Dammert says he’s not in the operating room to impart lessons to his son. That time is gone and he’s there to support his son in his practice. “For me it’s a joy and one of the most wonderful things to work with my son,” he said. “I am proud to watch him in action. He’s well-trained, careful, meticulous and confident.” He added, “Ever since he was a young boy, Mark has possessed tremendous empathy. Friends used to seek him out when they had problems. This carries well into his practice. Mark takes his time with each patient, and his interest in their well-being is sincere.” Bill Dammert raised his family in Dallas, where he practiced the majority of his career. Now, two of his three children live in the Austin area. While he continues to live in Dallas, he and his wife now have a townhouse in Austin to spend more time with their grandchildren, a one-year old and three who are four years old.

Father and son ready for their next case.

Their monthly visits may increasingly be timed around Mark Dammert’s medical cases, but they’ll leave time for “Grandpa” to take the kids to ride the train in Zilker Park. “I grew up watching my father in action,” said Mark Dammert. “I would join him on rounds or watch him in the operating room. Now that I’m in practice, it’s extremely special to work alongside one another.”

Meet the Doctor

Mark Dammert, MD Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)

Dr. Mark Dammert, an ENT who practices at Seton Hays, is a native Texan who’s pleased to be home after several fulfilling years in Louisiana. Following his ENT training, he had the privilege of completing a competitive facial plastic surgery fellowship under the guidance of four renowned facial plastic surgeons at Louisiana State University Medical Center. As a result, he has experience in all aspects of reconstructive and cosmetic facial surgery in addition to general ENT surgery. “Considering the growing population in Hays County, I saw a need and an exciting opportunity to develop a first-rate ENT surgery program here, with allergy and facial plastic surgery services as well,” said Dr. Dammert. “It has always impressed me how Seton Medical Center Hays is a true community where the entire team works together to advance health care in the Tri-County area,” he added. “Having this team and such a modern, well-equipped facility allows me to treat patients of all ages with ease.” When he is not busy in his practice, Dr. Dammert enjoys spending time with his wife and twin toddlers who seem to keep him too busy to do much else in his spare time! Dr. Mark Dammert is a physician with Austin Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic located at 1180 Seton Parkway, Suite 420, in Kyle. His office number is (512) 268-5282.

That’s why Seton is here.” Chris joined Seton in 1994 after serving as an officer in the U.S. Army. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Texas State University. Chris has led key Seton initiatives on pricing, contracting and Accountable Care Organization (ACO) development, among others. He also helped manage efforts to bring Brackenridge Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Austin into the Seton network in 1995. “It’s a great honor to be able to work at Seton Hays, a site that has such a remarkable reputation within Seton,” he said. “I count it as a real gift to be able to continue my leadership journey here.” Neal brings more than 25 years of clinical and health care administration experience to his new role. Your Support Changes a Child’s Life Everyday
Shared by Tiffany McDonaldMarsh, physician assistant, Seton Edgar B. Davis Children’s Care-A-Van.

A mother recently brought her son, who had been sick for more than a week, to the Children’s Care-A-Van. She tearfully described the panic she felt because his fever and cough persisted despite all the remedies she tried. She felt shame that she didn’t have the money to take him to the doctor because her family needed food for the week and they had bills that were past due. She also worried that she wouldn’t be able to afford any medicine he might need.

By the end of our visit, she had hope in her eyes and voice, and it seemed her walk was a little lighter. She left with the knowledge that she did not have to experience that fear ever again. She has a place she can turn to when things go wrong and her child needs help.  The support of donors and the community allows me to do this important work with the Children’s Care-A-Van. We are providing a means for these children to be whole – body, mind and spirit. I’m grateful to be part of a community that cares enough to provide this invaluable service. Seton and Texas State Join Forces
At a special ceremony in Bobcat Stadium in August, the Seton Healthcare Family was named the “Official Healthcare Sponsor of Bobcat Athletics.” Texas State University President Denise Trauth and Athletic Director Larry Teis made the announcement along with Chris Hartle, president of Seton’s South Market, and Gerald Hill, Seton Hays Foundation executive director and former Texas State vice president of university advancement. Seton and Texas State share a long history of serving the region. Texas State’s first building, Old Main, was completed in 1903 – just one year after the original Seton Infirmary opened in Austin. Trauth noted that Texas State has partnered with Seton for 40 years, helping to train students in several clinical specialties. As a result, there are hundreds of Texas State students and graduates who are better prepared for the myriad of health care occupations. The Texas State-Seton partnership will be noted in various ways during the Bobcat football season and later at men’s and women’s basketball, men’s baseball, women’s softball and volleyball, and many other Bobcat sports.

Welcome Home, Dr. Jamilla Stone
There’s no place like home for Dr. Jamilla Stone, a Lockhart High School graduate. After practicing medicine across the U.S. and internationally, she followed her yellow brick road back to Caldwell County.

Seton Hays Welcomes Hundreds at Health Fair
Jamilla Stone, MD Family Practice

Somewhere between Texas and Honduras during a trip to see her grandparents, or studying abroad in Chile as an undergrad at Rice University, Stone developed an urge to travel. “While I have been all over the world, my heart wanted to return to Texas,” Stone said. “I feel very lucky and excited to serve in my own community.” Now a board certified family practitioner with Seton Family of Doctors in Luling, Stone grew up in Lytton Springs, just 10 miles northeast of Lockhart. She’s a big fan of barbecue and likes the proximity to the “BBQ Capital of Texas.” “It’s a small world,” she said. “Our office manager is my high school classmate’s mother. I am incredibly fortunate to be home again and surrounded by friends and family.” Stone graduated summa cum laude from American University of Antigua College of Medicine. She is an active volunteer with international humanitarian projects. To make an appointment with Dr. Stone, call (830) 875-3445. 6

An estimated 650 people attended Seton Medical Center Hays’ annual health fair on Saturday, October 5.  A number of free and discounted screenings were offered along with activities for the kids, healthy food demonstrations, flu shots, chair massages and much more!   “The majority of people who attend this health fair are intent upon learning about health care services available to them in their community,” explained Barbara Rosen, a participating vendor with Wimberley Home Health.  “I’m appreciative that I have the opportunity to educate them and people are genuinely interested. There are also educational opportunities for children. That is an added bonus.” Texas State University also had a presence in recognition of Seton as the official health care sponsor of Bobcat Athletics.

Seton Southwest Fundraiser Set for April 27
Plans are underway for Seton Southwest Hospital’s annual fundraiser which will again be held against the beautiful backdrop of Camp Lucy in Dripping Springs.  Camp Lucy Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 27, 2014, for what promises to be yet another one-of-a-kind experience. This past year’s 5th anniversary fundraiser set records. Thanks to our wonderful donors and supporters, more than $82,000 was raised for the purchase of additional surgical equipment for Seton Southwest Hospital.  Guests enjoyed a “Culinary Taste Across Texas,” a chance to ride “Woody” (a wooden life-sized therapy horse), live entertainment and an amazing auction featuring trips to Aspen and Costa Rica. With your help, Seton Southwest will continue providing advanced health care to families and children in our community.  Whether you have an emergency, need surgery or physical therapy, or are a proud expectant mother, you can count on Seton Southwest. Hope to see you at Camp Lucy next year!

Daughters’ Trust Emboldens Our Work
When seven Daughters of Charity came to Austin in 1900, Central Texas was an outback wilderness with a population Pictured left to right: Sr. Sharon of 25,000. In Groetsch, Sr. Jean Wesselman, Sr. 1902, with Gertrude Levy, Sr. Catherine Brown, tremendous Sr. Helen Brewer and Sr. JT Dwyer community support and unflinching commitment to their mission, the Daughters opened the Seton Infirmary and the Seton School of Nursing. For generations, the Daughters faithfully ministered to the sick. They cared for patients during the smallpox, typhus, Spanish flu and polio epidemics. During the Depression, Sister Philomena Feltz fed the hungry, meeting the long bread lines that formed every day outside the infirmary. They trained much needed nurses during World War II. Over the next few decades, services expanded and a new Seton Medical Center was erected on 38th Street. Thanks to Sister Mary Rose McPhee’s leadership and community involvement, Seton Medical Center opened the region’s first neonatology unit in 1979, providing specialized care for newborns. Community support has always been vital to Seton’s ability to care for all, regardless of financial standing. To foster a dedicated network of volunteers and friends of Seton, the Daughters organized the first Seton Hospital Auxiliary in 1950.  In the early eighties, Sister Gertrude Levy organized volunteers to help establish the Seton Development Board and later, The Seton Fund, the first fundraising arm of the Daughters’ healthcare ministry in Central Texas. Since arriving 113 years ago, the Daughters have been preparing the laity to continue their mission after they are gone.  They are now called to serve where there is a greater need and will be leaving by fall 2014. Although the Daughters will no longer live in Austin, they will still be with us. The very bricks and mortar of our facilities resound with a century of their hardship, successes and unending faith in the future. The Daughters are confident that we will carry the mission forward. They have given us a gift — the gift of trust, knowing that we are capable of bringing new life and a new urgency to their work. 7

Give A Gift That Lasts Forever This Season
There is nothing better we can do for ourselves than something that not only makes us feel good, but does the same for others. At this festive time of year, most people don’t think about taxes. However, as the year winds down, so do opportunities to save on taxes. Now’s the time. When you make a gift to the Seton Hays Foundation by the end of the year, your gift can help reduce your 2013 tax burden. Gifts to support Seton’s mission can be in the form of cash, stock or other assets. A cash gift is quick and easy, but with a little planning we can help you make gifts with other assets such as real estate.

Gifts That Will Lower Your Taxes

Seton Hays Recognized for Stroke and Cardiac Expertise
CARDIAC CARE HIGHLIGHTS
Seton Medical Center Hays was the first medical facility in Hays County to receive Primary Stroke Center Certification by the Joint Commission, which recognizes facilities that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care.  Now the hospital celebrates a new honor. In September, Seton Hays received Chest Pain Center Accreditation by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The surveyor evaluated Seton Hays on treatment of those patients who arrive at the hospital with the symptoms of a heart attack.  Earning this accreditation affirms that Seton Hays clinical staff can provide all levels of care related to a patient with an “active heart attack.” One way to measure quality cardiac care is known as door-to-balloon time. Best practice calls for a door-to-balloon time within 90 minutes. This means that from the time the patient arrives at the hospital door, to the time it takes for the patient to receive a balloon or stent to open an artery, should be less than 90 minutes. Since opening, Seton Hays has beaten the 90-minute door-toballoon goal 100 percent of the time. Seton Hays has also added 16 new cardiac-monitored beds (telemetry beds). Now all patient beds can be monitored for cardiac care as needed.
