Sewerage – A Perennial Problem If a poll is taken on which of the following is a recurring nightmare - a broken down car, a broken down laptop with important data or a broken down leaking drainage pipeline, most people will opt for the latter only. Why? Because a leaking one means total upset of the daily routine. Bathroom taps cannot be turned on so no bathing, kitchen taps cannot be turned on so no cooking. Your life is completely upside down and you are left wondering what to do. It is as serious an emergency as you will ever face. Technically, such a situation can be divided into two aspects. It can be a clogged drain or it can be a leaking channel. Both have different solutions and remedies. However, with increasingly sophisticated methods, the act of repair is becoming simpler. Take the case of a blocked drain. Previously, the very act of locating the point of blockage was a complicated affair. The tubes had to be dug up and sections taken apart to get to the root of the problem. Now, sewer repairs have become a simple affair. Cameras mounted at the tip of long mechanical snakes are inserted into the pipes. Real time pictures are sent back to a monitor above the ground. This not only shows the exact area of the problem but also the condition and whether a particular section has to be changed. The next step is clearing the blockage. Again, previously, the cylinders had to be dug up and individual parts cleaned and put in place again. Now high pressure water jets are sprayed inside and cause of clogging is forced out. The strength of the jet is often in excess of 10000 psi, which is usually sufficient to clear any obstacle. In the process, the pipelines get cleaned also. This method entails no digging up of the pipes or taking them apart. It not only saves time but also on costs. The second type of problem is of a leakage. Here again latest technology enables sewer pipe replacement by the trenchless replacement method. Your garden or the street in front of your house is not dug up. Only the two ends corresponding to the length of the pipe are dug and it is pulled out using heavy machinery. A new one is then pushed back and the small patch of ground dug up is flattened back.
