and 8th Street during phase two of the Railroad
Avenue street project. Once the underground
utility work is complete at that intersection, the
road can be opened back up, allowing the detour
to shift from 7th Street.
Temporary water has been set up and tested
for businesses and residents along phase two of
the project. Thus far, no major issues have risen
from the current detour.
Businesses along the construction zone

and into everything, and are especially
vulnerable to injury from accidents in the
home. Use common sense and professional
advice to identify and resolve hazards that
go beyond the scope of this list:
In the Kitchen
• Poisons or toxic materials should
not be under the sink. Place them in a secure
cupboard out of baby’s reach
• Install latches on all drawers and cabinets
which might contain items that can harm
baby (kitchen, bathrooms, etc.)
• When cooking, all pot handles should be
turned inward so baby cannot reach them.
In the bathroom
• Do not take pills or medication in front of
children. They mimic what they see. Never
refer to medicine as “candy”.
• Secure all medications out of reach of baby

“I really enjoyed 4-H when I was younger, being able to go to the fairs and travel for the different contests,” said Roer- ick. “Now that I’m a mom, I thought my kids would have a blast being in 4-H.” This year was Jacob’s last year showing as a Cloverbud in the 4-H dairy show on Aug. 1, Eli’s À rst year as a Cloverbud and Aubree showed on Aug. 3, as part of the novice class in the open class dairy show.
Mergen's a pickin'
ALBANY – It’s the middle of August and sweet corn season has À nally arrived. For Joe Mergen and his three children, Hunter (15), Wy- att (12) and Robin (9), this time of year is one of the busiest as they sell sweet corn from their hobby farm, which is located on the outskirts of Albany. Joe has one acre of land near his home that is used for grow- ing sweet corn, while the rest of his land is wetland or rented out. “I wanted to use that acre for the kids to mess around with,” said Joe. “It would get the kids outside for a little bit.” The Mergens have been
selling corn for 15 years and en- joy the experience. They view this small business as a fun op- portunity rather than a way to make a simple buck. While Joe prepares the land and plants the corn, the children pick and sell it to the local com- munity.
“The kids do most of the work,” said Joe. “They go out with their wagon and pick doz- ens in a day.” Joe recalled one sizzling summer day when a customer arrived at their home asking for 20 dozen ears of sweet corn. “It was hot out and Hunt- er and Wyatt came out of the

• When walking for the school bus, stay away from the
bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver
signals you to enter. Use the handrail to enter and
exit the bus.
• When leaving the bus, walk ten giant steps away
from the bus before crossing in front of it.
Never cross behind the bus.
• Tell your parents, teacher or another trusted adult if
somebody at school is making you feel uneasy or
doing something you think is wrong.
• When walking to school, stay away from parks,
vacant lots, ﬁelds and other places where there
aren’t many people around. Always walk with a
buddy.
• If you are home alone after school, be sure to lock
the door and call a parent as soon as you arrive.
