author Pearl S. Buck visited
Sinclair Lewis’s boyhood home in
Sauk Centre she asked,
'Why should the fery, honest,
impassioned spirit have come of
such a house.”
Walking through the simple
story-and-a-half, olive green
home, you can see why she said
that. Lewis’s father, Dr. Edwin J.
Lewis, owned the sober, modest
home in contrast to the other house
on the block owned by Dr. Julian
Dubois, a larger two-story with
a large porch, freplace and large
carriage house. Yet the home would
play a key role in the life of one of
America’s most important authors.

One hundred twenty people joined us for a memorable day of golfng and dinner at GreyStone Golf Club.
Just before dinner, St. Michael’s Foundation Chair Mark Kranz made a couple of announcements:
(1) Tis year’s tournament raised $13,000 – the rest of the funds needed to purchase a Trumpf Arch Table
for our collaborative joint replacement surgical program. Te surgical procedures are performed at the Sauk
Centre facility and pre-and post-surgical care is provided at CentraCare’s facilities in Melrose, Long Prairie or
Sauk Centre, according to patient preference. Tis is a signifcant advancement because the trumpf arch table
is required in order to perform a special new procedure called anterior hip replacements which are less invasive
surgery, allowing for less pain and quicker recovery time.
(2) Te Minnesota Department of Health, Of ce of Rural Health and Primary Care has just awarded us
$125,000 for a new C-Arm. Te C-Arm was listed as the highest priority Greatest Need this year. Tis state-
of-the-art equipment will mean enhanced and expanded capabilities for our pain management clinic, our
radiology services, and our surgical department (particularly urology procedures) in Sauk Centre.

The course’s par three signature hole
#6 features Great Northern Lake in the

Club has more to offer with the Lakeview
Bar & Grill which has boat access from
Schneider Lake and serves appetizers,

FREEPORT – Grazing with pasture and organic dairy- ing go hand-in-hand in farm country, but the intensive graz- ing style necessary to support a dairy herd brings time and management issues.
For Freeport-area dairy farmers, Travis and Angela Scherping, grazing became a great deal simpler beginning in the 2009 grazing season. To manage the pasture elds their dairy herd grazes on, the Scherpings utilize a

One recent day, with the wind on her back, Herdering drove her 1986 shiny bur- gundy Gold Wing Trike, a three-wheel motorcycle, down County Road 157; daughter Grace sitting behind her; both with helmets on and an inter- com system to keep in contact with one another. Herdering wore a long-sleeved T-shirt with the words “Gold Wing” on the front, a large cross dan- gling over the words.
Having fun is a lesson learned by Herdering after her mother, Grace, who worked hard, died from cancer at age 51. Losing other family mem- bers to death has her looking at life a little differently these days, prompting the purchase of her trike.

of Freeport, where they raised their four children: Matt, who married Ashley Klaphake in January; Kristen, who works as a youth director for the tri-parishes in Freeport, St. Rosa and New Munich; and Luke and Grace, who live at
home.
