PART I: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK (Day One)
The purpose of the course is to develop an understanding about the primary concepts and applications of knowledge management, particularly those concepts that are relevant to information professionals. Participants will be able to appreciate the potential applications of knowledge management and the career opportunities expected to be created by KM applications in corporate and public sector organizations. The course will develop critical insights about further studies and professional enhancement opportunities.
Identifying existing knowledge assets in the enterprise: conducting knowledge and information audit for monitoring and evaluating an organization’s information and knowledge assets for their utilization to support knowledge management initiatives in an organization. Environment scanning for surveying external knowledge: environment scanning steps, useful sources, and environment scanning based information products and services. Developing knowledge architecture for storing and organizing knowledge: application of taxonomies and other knowledge organization schemes for enhancing knowledge discovery (Case studies of deploying taxonomies in electronic knowledge repository systems and intranets in Singapore)

Instructional Approach A combination of presentations, case studies, and field experiences will be used for the conduct of the course. Participant interaction is encouraged through questions and discussions. Course will be spread over six hours a day on three working days with a total of 18 hours of instruction time.

Who May Attend?
The course is designed keeping in
view the needs of information professionals who may include executives, managers, systems managers, systems analysts, and library and information professionals working in public and private sector organizations. No prior background in KM work or IT is required.
PART II: IMPLEMENTING KM IN ORGANIZATIONS (Day Two and Three) Preparation and organizational readiness assessment; practical steps for initiating knowledge management projects, and deployment of appropriate strategies and best practices for successful km environment (Case study of implementation of KM in Singapore Polytechnic)
