Flood in Pakistan:
The 2010 Pakistan floods began in July 2010 following heavy monsoon rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Baluchistan regions of Pakistan. Present estimates indicate that over two thousand people have died and over a million homes have been destroyed since the flooding began. The recent devastating floods have had a great impact on millions of children. Floods of this scale have the potential to impair children s emotional, intellectual and physical development which, in turn, could impair the nation s future. Children out of school face social, economical and emotional issues. Their health also suffers gaps in wellness appear early in poor children s lives and widen over time. No education, bad health and poverty, among other factors such as discrimination in flood aid distribution, will result in change of emotional behavior. A free medical camp set up by Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) a no-profit organization in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and supported by the Pakistan Army, is swarmed by a large number of people, a majority of whom are women and children suffering from such diseases. (Express Tribune) Despite being flooded out of their homes and forced to camp on embankments, there is one community that is happy about Pakistan s worst floods in living memory. They are the fishermen of the Indus River delta, whose livelihoods have diminished over the years from a lack of water, and who welcome the sudden abundance. (New York Times) Nick Clegg has said flood-hit Pakistan will need aid for years to come after he saw the extent of the devastation for himself. About £9 million will be spent on 2,330 water pumps for safe drinking supplies; emergency shelter kits for around 30,500 families; repairing or installing 5,000 toilets; spades, picks and wheelbarrows to help 1,600 families clear debris from their homes; and 650 kits containing essentials for newborn babies.
