Tim Poitras March 8, 2013 In 1902 Thomas Edison said, "There were never so many able, active minds at work on the problems of disease as now, and all their discoveries are tending toward the simple truth that you can't improve on nature." Should marijuana be legalized? Colorado and Washington State have already done it. If it’s even considered being legal, doesn’t that mean it’s not all that bad? It was first used in 2737 B.C. by Chinese emperor Shen Nung and he stated that the plant had medical effects. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both had a hemp farm. In 1619, the first marijuana law was instated by the colonies requiring farmers to grow it to make ropes, sails and clothing. The constitution was written on hemp paper. Once hemp is harvested we can spindle ropes that are twice as strong as ropes today. Hemp fiber is the strongest natural fiber. How can a plant be illegal? Honestly, the war on weed is a waste of money for the government, spending 42 billion dollars a year. That’s enough to employ 880 thousand teachers at the average salary. If the government were to regulate the use of marijuana less people would get into harder drugs and the gateway effect could be abolished because there would be no temptation to try them from a dealer. David Nathan says, “Those who believe cannabis to be a gateway to opioids and other highly dangerous drugs fail to appreciate that the illegal purchase of marijuana exposes consumers to dealers who push the hard stuff. Given marijuana's popularity in this country, the consumption of more dangerous drugs could actually decrease if pot were purchased at a liquor store rather than on the street corner where heroin and crack are sold.” Instead, you could get it from a dispensary, who couldn’t offer you harder drugs. Also, we are in an awful economic

situation. Marijuana could be taxed and it’s not like it takes a lot of money to grow it meaning profit. Everyone loves that word. Plus, Think of all the people who use marijuana a year, approximately 162 million. Approximately 25 million people use it daily. Roughly 50 percent of Americans support the legalization of marijuana. The first studies of marijuana were mostly false. Some of the first studies were done on monkeys to see if marijuana killed brain cells. The monkeys had the equivalent of 60 joints pumped into their systems through a gas mask. Not only was the gas mask pumping an unnecessary amount of marijuana into the monkeys it was also killing them through suffocation. When a mammal doesn’t breathe, brain cells are killed. Post-death test were done on the monkeys showing that brain cells had died. Not only is this experiment false, the government suffocated and killed monkeys. Marijuana is actually a bronchodilator meaning it increases oxygen flow to the lungs unlike tobacco. Tobacco kills, we all know that it causes cancer and turns the lungs into a tar filled death ride. Alcohol is just as bad, drinking it makes it impossible to drive normally risking crashing and serious injury. Alcohol can also cause liver failure if your drink enough of it. Ever heard of an angry drunk, alcohol can also contribute to domestic violence. A person who is prone to this behavior already has a much greater chance of physically and sexually abusing a child or spouse. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) website highlights alcohol as the "most commonly used chemical in crimes of sexual assault” It’s made from grains and was first made by accident by being left in a barrel filled with water which fermented. I couldn’t tell you whose idea it was to drink it but obviously it made them feel good and has been in use ever since. Given it’s an old tradition and has been used for many years isn’t it still an unnatural thing? Marijuana is completely natural and it doesn’t need to be tampered with. Tobacco is

natural but I don’t think it was ever intended to be smoked. Nicotine is found naturally in tobacco, but is arsenic and cyanide? Both of those are deadly poisons. That’s what I want to put in my body. David Nathan said, “Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, caffeine and refined sugar are among the most commonly used, potentially habit-forming recreational substances. All are best left out of our daily diets. Only marijuana is illegal, though alcohol and tobacco are clearly more harmful. In several respects, even sugar poses more of a threat to our nation's health than pot.” How harmful is marijuana truly? The government has been lying to the American people. There are some very interesting lies the government has been telling us. First, marijuana affects your ability to drive. This is very untrue, test show that people who smoke marijuana and drive afterwards drive slower and safer. From 2008-2009, fatal crashes in the states that had medical marijuana declined overall 9.34%. Only one medical marijuana state, Rhode Island, had an increase greater than 3%, which resulted in 18 more deaths. Four other states had 1%-3% increases, leading to 9 additional deaths. Of the remaining eight states that saw declines, half saw double-digit declines, including the laxest medical marijuana state, California, which had 353 fewer traffic fatalities. Saying marijuana is a gateway drug is like saying people who rides bikes is likely to become associated with a biker gang. It’s a choice to move on to harder drugs, marijuana doesn’t make you try cocaine. 1 in 104 marijuana smokers move on to harder drugs. Lastly, it’s said that marijuana makes you stupid. I know multiple people who smoke weed and make honor roll every quarter. Marijuana does not kill brain cells as said before. The people should know the truth about marijuana. The real reasons marijuana became illegal is because the government saw that the marijuana industry of clothing, paper and rope would put the cotton, paper and rope industries

out of business. The government is all about money and themselves, they will do whatever it takes to keep marijuana illegal unless the American people act soon. Marijuana activates Cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. It is believed that there are more of these receptors than any other receptor system. There are two types of these receptors CB1, predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands, and organs; and CB2, predominantly found in the immune system and its associated structures. Were humans meant to smoke marijuana? Phytocannabinoids are plant substances that stimulate cannabinoid receptors. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the most psychoactive and certainly the most famous of these substances, but other cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) are gaining the interest of researchers due to a variety of healing properties. Nothing even has to be done to marijuana to bring out its healing properties. In 1972, Congress made marijuana a schedule I narcotic along with heroin, cocaine, and meth. Congress also stated that weed had “no accepted medical use.” Since then 16 states and Washington DC have legalized medical marijuana. It truly is a super plant. Cannabis is a super plant. The seeds can be crushed down into an oil that burns cleaner than the petroleum we pull out of the earth’s crust. This oil can also be ingested, when this happens all mutated cells in the body are cleanse or killed. Cancer being one of the most horrible things on earth is a disorder where cells become mutated and cannot undergo apoptosis because the body doesn’t realize the cell is mutated. Eating this oil will cure cancer without operation or chemotherapy. The leaves can be made into clothing, sails and rope. It grows much faster than trees, where we get our paper, and can be made into hemp paper. For almost 100 years from 1850 to 1942 it was listed as a useful medicine. Every part of the plant has a purpose. If you ask

me marijuana is one of the most amazing and useful plants. It’s a gift to life and many people don’t realize that. So should this gift be legalized? I vote yes. Nature’s laws are superior to government laws. Why is nature illegal? There are so many things about that marijuana can do to better life like cure cancer. The government has also known that it cures cancer since 1974! That’s right, another lie that the government has told us. We could be living cancer free if the government hadn’t refused to use it because of their war on drugs. The people are sick of the lies and deception. The government needs to stop enforcing the beliefs of those who benefit from the failed war on drugs and start listening to the people of America.
