How to Apply a Skin Traction

Skin traction is an alternative treatment some orthopedic doctors use for fractured bones or orthopedic abnormalities. Traction is a non-invasive method that features firm straps to pull the skin that lies on or near the affected bone into a fixed, rigid position. This forces the bone to stay in the corrective spot. The basics of how to apply a skin traction are the same, although the exact placement will depend largely on which bone you are trying to heal. Ads by Google

2. 2
Clean the patient's limb thoroughly with soap and water before applying the strapping.

3. 3
Shave the patient's skin area where the straps will be applied. A single-edge razor should work well for this purpose.

4. 4
Attach a 3-inch (7.5 cm) wooden spreader to the middle of the strapping.

5. 5
Apply the strapping on either side of the patient's limb. The straps should be located at, but not above, the fracture line or you will not achieve traction. The wooden spreader should extend out from the patient's limb by approximately 6 inches (15 cm).

6. 6
Pad any bony areas near the strapping, such as an ankle, with cotton batting.

7. 7
Wrap a crepe bandage over the wound in a spiral pattern until it is completely covered.

8. 8
Elevate the limb, and attach a traction cord to the spreader. Run the cord through a pulley and attach a weight. The weight should not exceed 11 lbs. (4.99 kg). Let the weight hang from the patient's bed to begin traction. Ads by Google

If special traction strapping is unavailable in your area, you can substitute with zinc-oxide strapping. Before the application of the straps, smear the skin area with a compound tincture of benzoin. Allow it to dry for a few moments, until it gets tacky, and then apply the zinc-oxide straps. You can substitute crepe wrapping with a roll of gauze wrap or zinc-oxide tape. Wrap the injury in left and right spirals. As a general rule, the spiral wrappings should cross over twice for optimal results. Ads by Google

EditWarnings

Because this treatment permanently alters the patient's bone structure, applying skin traction should be done by a professional, preferably an orthopedic surgeon.

  

Skin tractions can easily cause blistering in older patients. Do not use this treatment option if your patient is more than 50 years of age. As with any traction treatments, there are potentially serious side effects, including skin sensitivities or irritation, joint pain, and ischemia. Patients using this treatment must be monitored carefully for symptoms. Avoid wrapping crepe bandaging in circular patterns around the injured limb, since this can easily cut off circulation. This is caused when the wrapping is wound too tightly.
