To succeed in today’s competitive environment the first and foremost challenge that any new Social Networking Solution has to address is crossing the minimum threshold number of active users. Mobile enabling the online social networking population by providing a unified solution through which: Users can create profiles for themselves and then connect to and socially interact with other users Users can create, view, organize, and/or share media files Users can create and/or monitor microblogs to communicate status and share thoughts, links, and media Users can do instant chatting with their group across all major chat forums Social Mapping through which users share their location and view the location of friends Users can do tagging on media /content and can search based on specific tags

Endeavor carried out a detailed analysis to identify the best open source solution available for building a social networking site like Silvergrey. These included: Joomla, ELGG, Buddypress and Drupal. It was further suggested to use Joomla as it was found to be the closest match with plug-in features for most of the Silvergrey requirements.
The solution was designed to meet the following challenges: Ease of Maintenance: the individual components can be easily replaced with new components without significant code changes Extensibility: modular design facilitated new feature enhancements without affecting the current system Performance: optimized for memory consumption and high response-time through innovative caching techniques such as memo-cache, load balancers and others Modularity: followed the V model so that both development and testing can happen simultaneously Scalability: ability to operate smoothly when it (or its context) is changed in User size or volume in order to meet a growing user base Mobile Device Support: support across all devices through a combination of J2ME, iPhone, Android, Blackberry versions Social Network Integration: provides integration with all major known social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo and MSN
