Cantor’s Notes
Celebrating Sukkot and Simchat Torah at Sinai

Many of us know where it is. Mine was in the drawer of our dining room
breakfront with the collection of velvet and satin kippot from weddings and b’nei
mitzvah. My brother keeps his near the religion section in his personal library (also
known as the nook behind the TV wall). Where do you keep yours, or your child’s?
Keep what?…the little Torah you received when you started religious school.
On the heels of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we launch into the festival
of Sukkot, which ends with Simchat Torah. The time of year is perfect; warm fall col-
ors everywhere from the ingredients in the kitchen, to the
trees, and the stores. The joy of being together, renewed
and revitalized from our holidays continues. The aroma
of apples and pumpkins fill our farms and kitchens, and
the memory of red, wind-chilled cheeks comes back to us
so quickly! At this rich and wonderful time of year,
through our fall holidays, we have the opportunity to sit
together - as we eat and schmooze in our sukkot, to cele-
brate together - at festival services and meals, and sing
and dance together – as we roll the Torah from the very
end back to the beginning, and start yet another year of
learning.
Join us Erev Sukkot (Wednesday, September
22nd) for an autumn potluck dinner at 6:00 pm, followed
by a short Erev Sukkot service at 7:00 pm. Bring a dish to share with a fall theme –
pumpkin soup, stuffed squash, apple pie…be creative! The Sukkot celebration con-
tinues at 9:30 am on Thursday, September 23rd. And be sure not to miss our an-
nual Sukkot sing-a-long and BBQ – great for families of all ages, 9 months to 90
years (and beyond)! The sing-a-long begins on Friday, September 24th at 5:30 pm,
immediately followed by our Brotherhood’s amazing BBQ!
The celebration continues with Consecration and Simchat Torah. Join us on
Wednesday, September 29th at 7:00 pm as we welcome our newest learners (and
give them their little Torahs!), and together rejoice in the celebration of Torah. We’ll
sing. We’ll dance. We’ll read Torah together and roll our scroll back to the begin-
ning. On Thursday morning, at 9:30 am we’ll begin at the beginning, as they say,
with the reading of B’reishit. Yizkor, the memorial prayers, will also be recited. We’ll
conclude together with a picnic lunch in the sukkah. Make sure to bring yours!
All these holidays! We have so much to celebrate. Zerek and I wish you and
yours a shana tovah umetukah – a sweet and happy new year and a chag sameach
– a joyous Sukkot and Simchat Torah!

Shabbat & Holy Day Schedule
High Holy Day packets were mailed the first week of August.
Please contact the Sinai office if you have not received your packet.
Page 3 September-October 2010
The High Holy Days arrive early this year (are they
ever ―on time?‖) Amid the frenetic pace of the first weeks of
fall, we will take time to think about the past year. How won-
derful it would be if we could ―erase‖ certain events from the
record. That’s not the way the world works, however. Our
deeds and choices are etched in stone, as present and immu-
table as the Ten Commandments on Moses’ tablets. But that’s
not the whole story. This season reminds us that
we can’t change the past, but we can shape the
future.
In that spirit, I offer some thoughts about
Teshuvah, or repentance. Repentance is a dy-
namic process that involves three steps: first,
identifying the wrongs we’ve done; second, ap-
proaching those we’ve hurt, our friends, our fami-
lies, and asking forgiveness; and third, resolving
never to repeat the wrongs.
Repentance doesn’t mean forgetting or
burying the past. It means confronting the past,
and, in so doing, preparing our way to the future. Like Moses’s
broken tablets that became the base for the second set of Ten
Commandments, our past transgressions can become a
source of wisdom and inspiration. We cannot forget or bury
the past. But we can overlay it with new and better choices. Or,
Rabbi’s Corner
as one of my teachers once said: we ought not to confuse
our mistakes with the life we are building.
Teshuvah also means extending forgiveness to
those who have hurt us. This is difficult but necessary. For
until we have reached a point of letting go of our anger and
pain, however justified, we cannot, with a full heart, ask oth-
ers to forgive us. Again, forgiving others does not mean for-
getting. It means putting those hurts we so often
carry with us down on the ground, that we might
climb upon them and, through our souls, em-
brace God.
To enable us to participate more fully in
the work of this season, our second community
program on Saturday evening, September 4
th
,
hosted by our congregation, will focus on the
question of the potentials and limits of forgive-
ness (see page 6 for details). I hope you’ll be able
to join us.
I hope that these weeks preceding the
Holy Days will allow for introspection and self-examination. I
hope we have the courage to forgive others and ourselves.
And I hope that our souls emerge refreshed and renewed,
and rededicated to the holy purposes to which we all aspire.

From the President
We are modern Jews who live in two worlds. Our reli-
gious life exists in the realm of the Jewish calendar and our
day-to-day lives respond to our secular world. Therein lies the
challenge for all of us. In contemporary Reform Judaism we
embrace a life that is in both worlds and our challenge is al-
ways to bring what is ―Jewish‖ into our secular world. We are
taught: ― We shall be a light unto the nations.‖ Jewish learn-
ing does not end on Sunday when we pick up our children
from religious school. Words of loving-kindness extend past
―Shabbat Shalom.‖ Being Jewish means bringing our values,
celebrations, and Jewish selves into our everyday lives.
At significant times of both years we resolve to do
things differently. In a new year, we resolve to be better peo-
ple in God’s eyes. This is a time that we engage in self-
examination, reflection, and planning for change in the com-
ing year. It is a time when we think about our relationships
with family members, friends and others in our various com-
munities. I hope that we all continue to reflect during the up-
coming holiday season on the important role that Congrega-
tion Sinai plays in our lives.
New years arrive on our personal calendars as well,
with many times to rejoice. Thank you to all the congregants
who shared our 40
th
wedding anniversary with Michael and
me and made contributions in our honor. It was so special to
be together with friends and family at our Shabbat service
and oneg this summer.
A wedding is a constant re-
minder of the honor and joy of commit-
ting to a friend and soulmate for life;
the start of a personal new year for a
couple. On Friday, October 1
st
, we will
have the honor of sharing in the family
calendar of our own Cantor Rebecca
Robins and her husband-to-be Zerek
Schwartz. Join us on that evening for a
special service with the traditional auf-
ruf (pre-wedding blessing) and a cham-
pagne oneg honoring this exciting event
in their lives and in the life of our congregation. We can also
celebrate another Shabbat together with abounding joy.
I look forward to enjoying the High Holy Days with our
remarkable congregation. I know I will love looking out at a
full sanctuary and greeting all of you with a smile and a
‖Shanah Tovah.‖

Lifelong Jewish Learning
Henry Slonimsky, beloved Dean of my seminary, used to say:
―boys, you are in an enviable position; you can say anything
you please from the pulpit, and if any one rises to
object, he can be arrested for disturbing the
peace. In recent years, the right of the clergy to
speak politics from the pulpit has been x-
questioned. Violations can be punished by the
loss of a congregation’s tax-exempt status. And
yet, it is quite impossible for the clergy person to
ignore politics. The task of a sermon is to bring
the ideology of one’s faith, particularly the moral
elements, to bear upon current circumstances,
individual and collective. It was an unpardonable breach of
clerical responsibility for German ministers to ignore, as so
many did, the birth and coming of power of the Nazi move-
ment.
It is quite acceptable for the clergyman to discuss politics so
long as he (or she) establishes the crucial distinction be-
tween his word and the word of the Lord. God’s
word, as revealed to Moses and the prophets, as-
serts that there must be justice in the land, with
the rights and well being of the weakest being pro-
tected. How effectively to do so is a matter of po-
litical judgment. So long as the rabbi makes clear
the distinction between God’s word, which is abso-
lute, and his word, which is only a matter of opin-
ion (and the stimulant to discussion), he is com-
pletely ―home free‖.

Sinai to Host Community S’lichot Services

Saturday night, September 6
th
, Congregation
Sinai will host eleven Milwaukee area congregations –
orthodox, conservative, reform and reconstructionist –
for Milwaukee’s second community S’lichot observance.
S’lichot, which in English means ―forgiveness‖,
is a late night service held the Saturday night prior to
Rosh HaShanah. The service has a special liturgy, much
with its own unique melodies, which is a beloved and
inspired part of Sinai’s prayer life.
This year, the service will be preceded by a
―staged reading‖ of the Next Act Theater’s performance
of ―The Value of Names‖ by Jeffrey Sweet. The actors
who performed in the original Milwaukee production will
be the cast and will take part in a post – performance
discussion. JCC Jewish educator, Jody Hirsch, will lead
the conversation. Without giving away any of the plot,
suffice to say that the play deals with the potentials and
limits of forgiveness, decades after the House UnAmeri-
can Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings on Hollywood
that took place in the 1950’s.
The evening begins with dessert at 8:45 pm,
the performance at 9:30 pm and discussion at 10:15
pm. At 11:00 pm we’ll begin the service, or to be more
precise, the services. Given the number of participants
we expect, we’ll divide into different prayer spaces for
services, which will range from traditional mainstream
Reform.

Back to school! I can hardly believe it, but another
school year has begun! Just as you spent part of the summer
shopping for school supplies, and checking to see if fall
clothes from last year needed to be replaced, we have been
hard at work preparing Sinai for another wonderful year of
learning and laughter!
It is a great joy to welcome Jeri Danz as our full-time
School Administrator. Many of you have had a chance to
meet and work with Jeri during last school year and the sum-
mer. Her warmth, work ethic and sense of joy bring so much
to our Youth Education Program at Sinai, and we are over-
joyed to have her on our staff full-time. Stop into the office
during business hours or school hours and say hello!
It is also a delight to welcome back Annie Golding
and Jenni Goldbaum as our Youth Education Program co-
chairpeople. Annie and Jenni have worked tirelessly through
the summer to plan and prepare an incredible school year for
our K-6th grade students and a joyous holiday celebration
during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for all our children. If
you see them, please be sure to say hi and thank you! They
are waiting to hear your thoughts, com-
pliments and concerns. Don’t ever hesi-
tate to reach out.
It is a joy and an honor to have
the opportunity to work with our stu-
dents and teachers this year in K-6
th

grade at Sinai. I believe, with all my
heart, that a religious education should
be inspiring, fulfilling, and full of joy. I hope as the year goes
on, you will share with me your thoughts on what our school
can be, and join us in making our Youth Education Program
second to none.

With warmest greetings for a wonderful school year,
Cantor Rebecca Robins

Two Israeli physicians Norman Loberant, from our
sister congregation in Israel, Emet veShalom (EVS), and a
Milwaukee native David Kniaz, toured the US on a mission
from the Jewish Federation. They met with emergency medi-
cal professionals in Chicago, Milwaukee and other cities.
Paz Goldshmidt, Cheryl Primakow, and Jeff Green
greeted them on behalf of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
Not to waste an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting, sev-
eral Sinai members gathered at Eti and Alex Ganin’s house
for a meet and greet potluck dinner on Monday, July 12th.
We spent a delightful evening listening to Norman’s
presentation on the EVS community history and current
events, and chatting. Even though most of us had never met
anyone from EVS, we felt as though we were attending a re-
union. A big thank you to all who cooked and baked.

―The spiritual benefit which you will derive from this experience will far
exceed any material gain‖ -2010 Sinai rummage sale shopper

This year’s rummage sale provided us with a unique opportu-
nity to gain perspective. The Milwaukee flooding, community need,
and enthusiasm of our volunteers created an environment for reflec-
tion and gratitude. We marveled as we watched Naomi Arbit and Doje
Sherman contribute their time and labor with unparalleled zeal to a
cause that is so dear to them. Husbands and wives, fathers and
sons, and mothers and daughters worked side by side, and we
learned so much about the history of our Jewish community through
stories behind individual dona-
tions.
For your generosity of
time and spirit; we thank all who
contributed to making this experi-
ence a success.

Over the summer a series of "fun" raising parties were held to benefit our congregation! This was a fantastic opportu-
nity to raise support for Sinai and create warmth and community with our members in a social setting. These parties were en-
tertaining and creative - from a luau, a fiesta and a bike and brunch to a Klezmer cocktail party and a wine and chocolate
BBQ! As Sinai News went to print – more parties were in the works and it looks as though we will achieve our ―fun‖raising
goal!

What do Women Want? In 1998, the Women of Si-
nai (Sisterhood) did a survey to consider what the women of
the congregation would want in terms of programming. At
that time, the group expressed interest in learning opportuni-
ties, social gatherings and a book club. Over the years
Women of Sinai has created all sorts of such opportunities.
Over the summer, a group of twenty women gath-
ered to consider the needs and desires of women in our con-
gregation. Cantor Robins posed the following questions:
What does it mean to be a Jewish Woman in 2010? How can
Congregation Sinai enrich your life as a woman? An excellent
discussion ensued and it was determined that there is a sig-
nificant amount of programming for all interests throughout
our synagogue, but it appears an opportunity to learn is de-
sired. Many women expressed excitement in wanting to learn
everything from defining Reform Judaism, holiday obser-
vance, history, comparative religion, God and spiritual-
ity. What we heard was women want to put themselves at
the top of the list and attain a knowledge that they can ex-
plain to their children.
Sinai Brotherhood welcomes congre-
gants to the Sukkot BBQ on Friday, September
24th, 5:30 pm Shabbat Sing-along (6:15 pm

ated fall "gathering of our community" where
Brotherhood members grill favorite dishes and
serve up a tasty meal for all to enjoy. Last
year over 150 congregants shared in the ser-
vice and the meal. We hope to see you there!

am to noon on Sunday, September 19th at Congregation Si-
nai. Bring your own power drill/screwdriver and the rest will
be provided. We usually need about 6 men who are willing
to work quickly and efficiently to create the temporary shelter

for you! For more information contact Tom St. John at

Thank you to all the women who attended and
opened themselves to an honest and meaningful discus-
sion. We listened and together let’s make it happen! I also
want to thank the past presidents who attended this beauti-
ful evening. You are such a positive, passionate group of
women who give a sense of history to Women of Sinai.

We've all blown it at one time or another.....The Shofar
of course!
Ritual Question of the Quarter: When is the right time
to blow the Shofar? Answer: Traditionally, the Shofar is blown
every day in the Hebrew month of Elul (this year August 10th-
September 8th). Further, it is considered a mitzvah to hear
the Shofar blown on the day of Rosh HaShanah. It is consid-
ered a "wake up" call (to us and to God) to think about our
year, take stock and atone. It is also traditional to hear the
Shofar blown at the end of Yom Kippur signifying the end of

You Should Know! Social Action at Congregation Sinai is
Comprehensive, Historic, and Growing….And we need YOU!!!

HUNGER: For over 30 years, Congregation Sinai has been
involved with the Mother Bates’ Bethesda Meal Program.
Introduced to Sinai by Elmer Winter (z’l‖) in the 80’s, this pro-
gram currently feeds 2000 people each month. In the begin-
ning of our relationship, there were many hands-on opportu-
nities for our congregants that formed a strong relationship
between Sinai congregants and the Mother Bates’ program
participants. The relationship even created an opportunity
for Rabbi Brickman and Pastor Scott to conduct services at
each other’s places of worship.
Today, the numbers of those in need increase during
the summer months as the inner city school children no
longer receive lunches at school. Sinai funds the summer
meal program through the Hunger Task Force (as well as pro-
viding paper goods and utensils to the program throughout
the year). Thank you, Dr. Paul Whiteman, for overseeing and
nurturing this program for so many years.
The Mother Bates’ Bethesda Meal Program has re-
cently moved to a larger location - 29
th
and Highland - creat-
ing renewed hands-on opportunities with the meal program
or the food pantry. Please let us know if you are interested.
Meal program: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from
12:00 pm-1:15 pm.
Food Pantry: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00
am-11:15 am.

activities, planting flower pots, seeding and planting a fabu-
lous vegetable garden, decorating cookies, and packaging
over 50 toiletry baskets for newly arrived residents.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Immigration
The Stranger In Our Midst
You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were
strangers in the land of Egypt. You shall not ill-treat any
widow or orphan. If you do mistreat them I will hear their out-
cry out to Me, and My anger shall blaze forth and I will put
you to the sword and your own wives shall become widows
and your children orphans. (Exodus 22:20-23)
You shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the feelings of
the stranger, having yourselves been strangers in the land of
Egypt. (Exodus 23:9)

Over this past year, our Social Action Committee has
been grappling with the issue of immigration and is develop-
ing a variety of ways to present the issues. Thirty congregants
attended our February 19th Social Justice Shabbat featuring
a speaker from Miklat articulating the Jewish response to
immigration as well as volunteers from the Voces De La
Frontera’s Sanctuary Movement. On July 9th, 26 congre-
gants gathered to watch ―The Visitor,‖ a poignant and stimu-
lating film about people caught up in the immigration di-
lemma. Thank you Craig Johnson and Diane Slomowitz for
making this happen.

As you see, social action activities are abound at Sinai.

Consider joining our committee – we meet once a
month on Fridays.

Please contact our co-chairs :

Action Committee.

Dear Rabbi Cohen and Eti Ganin,
On behalf of Rabbi Horowitz, Congregation Emet
VeShalom’s Board and our entire congregation, I thank you
for Congregation Sinai's donation to Emet VeShalom. Please
relay this thank you to the 6th grade
class for donating the proceeds from
their bake sale and also for the dona-
tion via the Israeli roses sale. As was
conveyed to me, the donation will be
used for youth activities and programs.
Congregation Sinai's friendship and
support since the year 2004 is appre-
ciated. Your commitment to our con-
gregation, through your assistance
regarding interest and support for Emet VeShalom is valued
and meaningful.
We hope that all of Congregation Sinai's members
consider Emet VeShalom their second home congregation
and will visit us whenever they are in
Israel. Thank you for your continued
support to sustain and strengthen our
progressive congregation.

What’s Greening at Sinai
Our second annual Sukkah Garden is growing strong.
We have monster gourd plants, tall corn and sorghum, lots of
flowers, some basil and other assorted herbs, and even a few
stray tomatoes left over from last year. Sadly, the sunflowers
became a tasty treat for a neighborhood deer, or some such
creature. Once again, we need to give a hearty THANK YOU
to Naomi Cobb for the garden layout, organizing the planting
day and pulling together the sched-
ule for the many Sinai members who
have been cultivating and protecting
our crops through the weeks of sum-
mer. I hope that the congregants
who have weeded, watered and
tended the garden this summer feel
the same sense of pride that I do in
our community accomplishment.
Naomi and I look forward to harvest-
ing with the children and decorating
our Sukkah with the spoils during
the youth programming on Yom Kip-
pur. If you would like to participate
in the fun, please come join us!
In other Greening of Sinai news, there has been
some interest in having Sinai host a CSA (Community Sup-
ported Agriculture-see article from the Sinai News summer
insert.) We have been researching local CSA’s to find one
that would be the best fit with our community. Our member-
ship in such a venture would involve Sinai families purchas-
ing farm shares (you would receive a box of freshly grown
organic produce each week) and Sinai becoming a ―drop-site‖
for the farm. We may be able to gain an additional benefit
from a farm relationship via educational programming, en-
The Eternal took and placed the human being in the Garden of Eden, to cultivate it and to protect it. -Bereishit
hancing our holiday celebrations by adding an agriculture
backdrop, etc. The possibilities are very exciting! In order for
this to happen, we will need a minimum number of families
to commit to purchasing farm shares (We don’t know the ac-
tual number yet-this depends upon the CSA we choose.) If
you would be interested in participating in such a venture
next year (Spring through Fall 2011), please email me at
[email protected]. It is im-
portant that we hear from you even if
you are just curious.
As the new school year approaches,
please think about putting Sinai car-
pool on your to-do list. As I did last
year, I will be emailing religious
school families a list of other families
in your general geographic location
and contact information to help. Car-
pooling is a win-win for everyone -
convenient for you, social for the kids,
good for the environment!
Greening of Sinai is charged with rais-
ing awareness of environmental is-
sues and helping Sinai become as ―green‖ as possible. We
want to hear your ideas, interests and musings. If you want
to join the Sukkah garden project, or any of the other Green-
ing of Sinai projects, please contact Deb Schermer at
[email protected].

Happy New Year Everyone!

For the past two years, a group of eight Sinai men have
gathered twice a month to play bridge. The degree of
bridge knowledge varies from members with 40 years ex-
perience (and many ACBL Masters points), to beginners
and all levels in between. The games are very friendly and
filled with sterling play and “teachable moments”. As every-
one’s lives are busy, we generally only get 4 or 5 players at
one time, so we can only play one
table. We meet at the members’
homes on a rotating basis. How-
ever, we would like to expand our
meetings to a two table game and
possibly (or not) start playing a two

, 2010. Kevin is the son of Liz and Mark Blutstein, brother of Andy, and grand-
son of lifelong Sinai members Barb and Mort Blutstein and Lois and Burt Snider.
Kevin will be an 8
th
grader at Lake Shore Middle School in the fall. He enjoys several sports including baseball, football and skiing.
Kevin has attended Rainbow Day Camp and Camp Interlaken for many years and appreciates all the fun these opportunities provide.
Kevin is very excited about his Bar Mitzvah and celebrating this special time with family and friends. He and his family thank Rabbi
Cohen, Cantor Robins and Linda Ross for their assistance and guidance preparing him for this special day.
Jordan Ellerbrock
Jordan Ellerbrock will become a Bat Mitzvah on October 16, 2010. Jordan is the daughter of Car-
rie and Scott Ellerbrock, sister of Ethan, and granddaughter of Larry and Marcia Swartz of Minneapolis, MN

and skiing. She also loves any and all animals, going to Camp Interlaken and spending time with her
friends and family. Having a strong desire to preserve the earth and a firm believer in Tikun Olam, Jordan
continues to help clean up her neighborhood and assist in recycling for areas that do not have facilities or
services to do so.
Jordan and her parents would like to extend a very special thank you to Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Rob-
ins and Linda Ross for helping her reach this special occasion.
Jacob Bern
Jacob Bern will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on October 30, 2010. Jacob is the son of Jeffrey Bern

and singing in the school choir, Jacob enjoys participating in school plays and has had roles in numerous pro-
ductions at First Stage Children’s Theater.
Jacob and his family appreciate the time Rabbi Cohen and Cantor Robins have spent preparing Jacob
for his big day.

So, let me just share...
Your Sinai staff is working very hard to prepare for our
High Holy Days.

■ Creating that gawwwwgeeeeoousss Holy
Day packet.
■ Cleaning up after those horrible rains. Oy, I
thought we were going to need to build an ark!
■ Polishing, shining and making sure everything is just so.

Even the parking lot has new lines painted on it to be sure there’s
enough parking. Those diagonal lines along the building’s entrance,
they indicate a fire lane. Don’t park anywhere near them...God forbid
an emergency vehicle needs to pay a visit they should have plenty of
room to get in and out. Oy! And you know...it’s the law!

You know this comes from a place of love.
