Eudaily a national finalist for ‘Blind Students’ story

Big Winners at TIPA, SPJ
KTSW swept the Radio In-Depth Reporting category, taking all three top spots, with Eudaily taking two of those awards. Second place went to Sonia Onescu for her report on “Native American Student Association”; and third place went to Eudaily for his report “Zero Tolerance.” The University Star took top honors for Best Independent Online Student Publication for a four-year college/university. Other first place awards went to Jacqueline Baylon for general news reporting; Allen Reed, Chase Birthisel, Lisa Carter and Beth Brown for InDepth Reporting; and Mike Guzman for Online Opinion and Commentary. OKLAHOMA CITY — The University Star and KTSW cleaned up at the SPJ Region 8 awards ceremony. Texas State walked away with five first place awards, the most first place awards by the school in recent memory. Each first place entry advanced to the national competition. Christopher Eudaily’s “Blind Students” report was named a national finalist in the Radio In-Depth Reporting category, along with an entry from Utah State University. The national winner in the category was “Tracking Stimulus Dollars in Southwest Ohio, by Miami (O.) University.

The University Star took 31 awards, Bobcat Update and KTSW 10 awards during the recent Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competitions. Texas State students added four other awards in “on-site” contests. Allen Reed took first place for on-site editorial writing. Rebecca Ambrose took second place for feature photography; and Chase Birthisel and Andrew Goodwin took honorable mention for radio news writing and video news, respectively. Birthisel took other first place awards in three online categories, for Best Interactive Graphic, Best Website Navigation and Online Sweepstakes. He won two seconds, one for Best Online

Phillips selected intern with Dow Jones Fund
Electronic Media Senior Jarod Phillips is one of 10 multimedia interns for this year’s Dow Jones News Fund internship program. Phillips will receive training at Western Kentucky University, then work for the International Center for Journalists in Washington, D.C. The Dow Jones News Fund accepted 81 undergraduate and graduate students out of 600 applications for the prestigious paid internship. Summer 2011 will be the 44th summer in which the DJNF has offered internships. The internship program began in 1962 and lasts 10 weeks during the summer. Interns work as news and sports copy editors, business reporters and in multimedia.

LEADERS IN POSITION FOR 2011-2012 YEAR
Student media and professional organizations are turning the page on the current academic year and getting ready for the 2011-2012 year. The University Star named Hollie O’Connor editor in chief. Section editors will be named soon. The faculty adviser is Bob Bajackson. The Star has its print and online operations in the Trinity Building. Radio Station KTSW 89.9-FM recently named its staff. Jennifer Kelly will remain station manager through the summer, then yield to Lauren Taylor, who this summer will serve as assistant station manager and program director, for the next year. Other department heads are as follows: Nic Giarrusso, sports director; Audee Salinas, news director; Daniel Hughes, promotions director; Taylor Wood, office manager; Brooke Hampton, music director; David Hinojosa, webmaster; and Hanna Hartman, production director. Dan Schumacher is the station’s general manager. Bobcat Promotions, the student-run PR/Ad agency, named Jessica Gusan as its executive director for the coming year. Chuck Kaufman is the group’s faculty adviser. Many media organizations elected new officers; others will choose leaders in the fall.

TAPME award winner
TYLER, Texas — Tina Phan, a Buster Haas news intern last summer for the Abilene ReporterNews, won a second place award at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors convention here for a video she produced as part of her news coverage.

Sloan-certified
Dr. Judy Oskam is the first faculty member at Texas State to have completed the Sloan Consortium Online Teaching Certificate, which includes a 9-week foundation course and a series of electives.

Kappa Tau Alpha inductees
Dr. Tim England swore-in 14 students in the Texas State chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha as top scholars. They are: Martha E. Francisco, Daniel R. Peterson, Maureen J. Schein, Caleb W. Harris, Brittany A. Awards Day 2011: Top students named

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication named its outstanding undergraduate and master’s students during Awards Day 2011 in Old Main. Top undergraduates were: • Kristin Pixley, advertising; • Kace Layton, electronic media; • Katina Smallwood, general mass communication; • Jesse Allen Reed, journalism; and • Lorna Stevens and Brittany Anne Barnett, public relations. Top masters students were: Douglas Martin-Whitaker, Josh Shepherd, George “Trey” Hatt, Mark Mederson, Lydia Saldana, Dale Blasingame, Adrianna Villanueva and Leslie Ornelas.
