CAMILA’S DOUBLE
DUTY

THE KETTERING
INCIDENT
TO HIT SCREENS

CAMILA BANUS’s acting
career is going from strength to
strength. Not only did she recently
re-sign a contract extension with
Days, keeping Gabi on screens
for another year, but she’s now
landed a role on the primetime
soap Mistresses, seen here on
Seven. “I’m doing a recurring
role on
Mistresses,”
enthuses
the actress.
“Season 4
starts soon
and I’m
going to
be on there
quite a few
times.”

Fresh from its award win at the Series Mania
TV festival in France, Foxtel has announced
The Kettering Incident will air July 4 on Showcase.
The mystery thriller is an eight-part series starring
rising talent ELIZABETH DEBICKI (The Great
Gatsby, The Night Manager) and local TV favourite
MATTHEW LE NEVEZ (Love Child, Offspring).
Debicki plays Anna Macy who left Kettering as
a teenager after her friend disappeared. Her
return sparks rumours about what really occurred
until another girl disappears. Anna becomes
determined to uncover what really happened.

Genoa City
WILD CHILD

Long-time soap star CHRISHELL STAUSE is joining the
cast of The Young and the Restless in the recurring role of
Bethany Bryant, “a young woman who relishes the chance
to push things to the limit and live dangerously as long
as she’s not the one who
gets burned”, according
to the casting breakdown.
Similarly described as
“attractive and sexy…a
free spirit [who] sticks
to one-night stands and
casual relationships [and]
likes to play with people’s
minds”, Bethany will be
embroiled in one Genoa
City family’s drama when
she starts airing in the
US in late May. Known
for her soap stints as All
My Children’s Amanda
Dillon and Days’ Jordan
Ridgeway, Stause also
has strong backstage
connections at Y&R.
She’s the best friend
of MELISSA CLAIRE
EGAN (Chelsea) and is
currently dating JUSTIN
HARTLEY (Adam).

NANCY

RETURNS TO
DAYS

Walking the red carpet during
the 43rd Annual Daytime
Creative Arts Emmy Awards
in Los Angeles on April 29,
former Days star PATRIKA
DARBO had a surprise in
store for fans. She’s coming
back to the show as Chloe’s
brutally outspoken mother
Nancy Wesley later this year!
“I have a feeling that I will
be coming back to raise a
little hell. These other women
messing with my grandchild is
not a good thing,” said Darbo
of her character’s potential
story exploits. Will Nancy’s
husband Craig be joining her
in Salem? “I know she’s going
back [but] I don’t know about
myself as of yet,” says Craig’s
portrayer Kevin Spirtas. “If
they call, I will go back. I love
Days of our Lives.”

Death
SHOCKER

Y&R stunned soap fans in April
when KELLY SULLIVAN’s Sage
Newman was unceremoniously
killed off in a terrible car crash.
Currently enmeshed in an
emotional baby-swap saga
(Sharon is raising Sage’s “dead”
baby Christian), Sullivan’s Sage
debuted in October 2014 after the
actress previously played Connie
on General Hospital. Sage will last
air here in Australia in November.

Y&R and B&B renewed!

All
about

Soap fans can rejoice with the exciting news that The Bold and
the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless have been renewed
through the 2016-17 US TV season. Given Y&R’s previous multi-year
renewal in 2014, its continuation is simply an extension of that deal
but B&B has been handed even bigger news. Previously renewed for
only one year at a time, CBS has now opted to renew B&B for two
years, assuring that it will remain on air through 2018. Also renewed
by the CBS network is the SHARON OSBOURNE hosted talk show
The Talk, seen here in Australia on the Ten Network.

EASTENDER STAR
HEADS WEST

Being popular with the fans
doesn’t
automatically
make soap
stars immune
to the Soap
Gods’ axe as
witnessed by
the news that
EastEnders’
JONNY
LABEY and
JONNY
his character
Paul Coker are to be written
out of the show in the months
ahead. According to a show
spokesperson, the decision to
write out Labey’s Paul, first
seen in June 2015, was
made months ago. “Jonny is
leaving the show in a couple of
months as part of an explosive
storyline,” a show insider
added. “Bosses are keeping
tight lipped about what’s in store
but there’s plenty of drama in
store for Paul before he leaves.”

WALFORD HAS

Two former
EastEnders
favourites are
returning to the
show as part of
a big storyline
surrounding
the Beale
family. JOHN
PARTRIDGE

LYNDA

and LYNDA BARON are
briefly reprising their roles of
Jane’s brother Christian and
mother Linda in the next couple
of months to participate in some
dramatic events that will forever
alter the Beale family’s lives.
Partridge was last seen during
the soap’s 30th anniversary
episodes in February 2015 while
Baron is reappearing for the
first time since February 2009.
Airdates for the characters’
returns haven’t been disclosed.

Stung to think that her

Enraged by Bill’s subsequent

THE BOND BETWEEN
Lauren AND Ned GETS
COMPLICATED AS HE
STARTS TO SEE HER AS
MORE THAN A FRIEND
Lauren tells
Ned he
misread her
friendliness,
and conveys
that her
feelings are
not romantic.

Ned (Ben Hall)
kisses Lauren
(Kate Kendall)
after she says
she cares
about him.

N

ed Willis’s arrival in
Erinsborough has
been anything but
easy. Brad’s longlost son came to town at the
request of his grandfather
Doug, only for their reunion
to be rocked by the Lassiters
explosion.
When the blast took the
lives of Doug and Ned’s
half-brother Josh, Brad was
desperate for Ned to stay.
But Ned’s (Ben Hall)

by Brad’s (Kip Gamblin)
abandonment of him as a child
ran deep and their journey to
rebuild their relationship hasn’t
been smooth.
So it was some comfort to
Ned to find support in Lauren
(Kate Kendall) who encouraged
Ned to remain in Erinsborough
despite his troubles with Brad.
The bond Ned shares with
Lauren, however, is becoming
murky as Ned has started
to see Lauren as more than
a friend.
He cares so deeply for
Lauren that he is quick to let
her know that he thinks Brad
is cheating on her with Terese
(Rebekah Elmaloglou).
Though Lauren insists
the intimate moment Ned
witnessed was just Brad
and Terese grieving over
Josh, Ned’s theory has
put a doubt in her mind.
Things started to get
awkward when Lauren

accidently
spotted Ned in the
nude. Their eyes
locked for a heated
moment leaving
Lauren uncomfortable
and embarrassed.
Despite trying to
discuss the awkward
situation, Ned avoids
the topic, making
Lauren even more
confused. It becomes
obvious where Ned’s
head is at when he
confides to Brad that
he has feelings for
an older woman. Not
knowing it’s Lauren,
Brad tells him to give
it a shot.
Later, Brad leaves
the house but is coy on where
he’s going. Ned suggests he’s
probably with Terese and
Lauren lets her curiosity get
the best of her and heads to
Terese’s house to confirm it.
When she catches them looking
intimate she confronts Brad
who insists that he definitely

isn’t having an affair but he
can’t reveal what’s going on.
Frustrated by Brad’s lack
of openness and suspicious
behaviour, Lauren vents to Ned,
who thinks Brad and Terese
really are having an affair.
Lauren shuts the conversation
down when she realises it’s

inappropriate to discuss
the topic with Ned but she
later tells Ned that she cares
about him. Though she
doesn’t mean romantically,
Ned interprets her comment
this way and kisses her.
Shocked to find out he
misread the signs and that
Lauren’s feelings for him
aren’t romantic, Ned begs
Lauren not to tell Brad. He
fears that their delicate
relationship would
be torn to shreds
if Brad knew Ned
had feelings for
Lauren. This secret
has the potential
to ruin not only
Brad’s relationship
with Ned but with
Lauren too and
after they only just
got back together.
Can they keep it

downward spiral
ALMOST EVERYONE THINKS HE
CAUSED THE LASSITERS BLAST, SO
WILL HE EVEN DEFEND HIMSELF?

Time is up for
Paul Robinson,
the embattled exmayor turned motel owner
who has been accused
of causing the deadly
Lassiters explosion.
The once proud and
ruthless businessman has
been brought to his knees.
Shattered by his family and
friends’ lack of faith in him,
he has lost all hope not only
of being found innocent but
with life in Erinsborough.
His downward spiral was
fast-tracked by grief-fuelled
vengeance from Terese,
the woman Paul (Stefan
Dennis) has been pining
for, for years. Her son Josh
(Harley Bonner) was killed
in the blast and she has
vowed to stop at nothing to
see the person responsible
pay — and in her eyes
there is no doubt that man
is Paul. She has even gone
to extraordinary lengths to
expedite the case by making
a deal with a witness to
testify against him.
As for Paul’s family,
his nephew Daniel (Tim
Phillipps) declared that
he thought Paul was guilty
shortly before Daniel moved
to the US
with his bride
Imogen (Ariel
Kaplan). His
daughter Amy
(Zoe Cramond)
doesn’t know
what to think
but has been
trying her best
to show her
father that
she still cares
for him even
though he has
tried to push
her away.
Paul does
have his
grandson

Jimmy (Darcy
Tadich) in his
corner as well as
niece Madison
(Sarah Ellen)
who has urged
her uncle not
to give up the
fight.
But
the most
supportive
Ramsay
Street
resident
throughout
the whole
ordeal has been
the most unlikely.
Paul’s former enemy
Steph (Carla Bonner)
who is now his business
partner has been his
rock since the arrest.
She has even put up
the motel as surety for
Paul’s bail and helped
investigate Paul’s claims
that he was framed.
Now with the court case
looming, Steph once again
is coming to Paul’s aid by
persuading Toadie (Ryan
Moloney) to be Paul’s lawyer.
It’s a huge decision for Toadie
who is well respected by the
Erinsborough community.
Representing Paul could see
him lose favour with many
locals and put his reputation
on the line.
While Toadie contemplates
the proposition, Paul also has
his own important decision to
make. With Cecilia’s (Candice
Alley) testimony, the boiler
room plans found in his
briefcase and that he deleted
CCTV footage of himself at
Lassiters before the explosion,
all the evidence points to Paul.
Is it even worth mounting a
defence? Paul needs to decide
if he has the strength to
fight or give in to the
mounting evidence and
plead guilty. SW

Just platonic
(for now)
A
fter their undeniable
chemistry resulted in
a shock kiss earlier this
year, Piper and Tyler
have tried to put their feelings
to one side. It’s not just Brad
and Terese’s ban on the pair
being together keeping them
apart but the star-crossed
lovers themselves. They know
there is a big age gap of about
eight years that might not
otherwise be a problem if Piper
wasn’t a 16-year-old high
school student.
Since they locked lips, the
two have been just friends, with
Tyler (Travis Burns) supporting
Piper (Mavournee Hazel)
through her relationship with
dodgy ex-boyfriend Brodie
(Matt Testro) as well as Josh’s
(Harley Bonner) death.
Now Piper is facing
another tough test when
Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou)
turns to alcohol to deal with
her grief, the stress of Paul’s
(Stefan Dennis) court case over
the Lassiters explosion and

Walter (Greg Stone). After
Terese passes out she heads off
to a health retreat, leaving her
youngest daughter by herself.
Tyler does his best to
encourage Piper, offering to
provide company while she
is in the house alone and
reminding her of just how
much support she has on
Ramsay Street. Piper takes
Tyler up on his offer and the
mechanic spends the evening
with her. Though meant to be
a casual get-together, things
start to heat up.

Fearing romance isn’t far
away, Tyler ends up leaving
and the next day both feel
awkward around each other.
While they both wished Tyler
had stayed longer they know
they would have gone too far
if Tyler had stayed.
Piper is understanding the next
time she invites Tyler over and
he says no but later when he
finds her venting over her family
dramas online he can’t help but
comfort the stressed teen.
Helping Piper overcome her
frustrations leads the attraction

to escalate to the point of the
two almost kissing.
Meeting up later, Piper and
Tyler admit their behaviour has
become more than friendly and
they decide once again to keep
things platonic, even as their
chemistry bubbles away.
Under the safety of a video
chat, Piper opens her heart
and reveals how she truly feels
using hypotheticals. Tyler says
he feels the same and cuts their
call short, realising they’ve
gone too far. Will they finally
give in to their feelings? SW

ALAN DALE

Based on the novels The
Marmalade Files and
The Mandarin Code by
journalists Chris Uhlmann and
Steve Lewis, six-part mini-series
Secret City lured back two
of Australia’s most intriguing
exports to play top politicians.
Two-time Academy Award
nominee Jacki Weaver stars
as Labor powerbroker Catriona
Bailey, a single mother from
the Sutherland Shire in Sydney’s
south who worked hard to rise
to the Senate. “Catriona is a
very powerful woman, and
a very ambitious woman,”
says Weaver.
“She’s a great character
because she’s full of

opportunity to play Australian
Prime Minister Martin Toohey,
who believes his country
should maintain its neutral
stance in the struggle between
the US and China, wasn’t an
unfamiliar one for Dale.
“I have been in government
many times,” he explains.
“I was Secretary of Commerce,
for The West Wing, and I was
the Deputy President, Vice
President, in 24 and for a few
episodes I was President of
the United States, when I put
Dennis Haysbert’s President
character in jail, and took
over. So I have actually been
President before. So, President
and now Prime Minister — not
too bad really!”

Having rarely been back to
Australia for work since his
move to Hollywood, Dale was
drawn to Secret City, filmed in
Canberra, by the scripts. “Secret
City is a thriller and reminds
me of the British ones I love
watching. But it’s got a very
dark side to it, and many twists
and turns, and you don’t really
know who’s the good guy.
“So, I love the show. I’ve
been away for nearly 16 years,
but I haven’t been back often.
This one, I loved the scripts. In
fact, they sent me the first five
episodes to read and I was
climbing down the phone at
my agent, about getting me
the sixth episode, because it
was really thrilling.” SW

over the world.”
Best known as Jim Robinson
from Neighbours, Alan Dale

high in the city where
unexplained violent
attacks have been
blamed on a species called
Hairypeople. Pushed to
the fringes of society in
a ghetto-type community
known as The Zone, which
has been walled off by
the government, they are
forbidden to leave. Only
humans may come and go
by showing their IDs.
Koen (Hunter PageLochard) and Blair
(Ryan Corr) have been
taking advantage of the
Containment Authority’s
desperate attempts to stop
any Hairies from living in
the city. They smuggle a
family out of The Zone and
into a city apartment. After
payment, they leave and
later dob in the family to
the Authority so that they
can claim their reward.
Footage of the violent
retrieval of the Hairy family
is broadcast across television,
horrifying Waruu (Rob
Collins) who believes that
once his Uncle Jimmy’s (Jack

have been passed on he can
help bring peace to The Zone
and end people smuggling.
But it is Koen who gets a visit
from Jimmy and after being
given a special club known as
a nulla nulla, Jimmy sacrifices
himself. The powers do not go
as expected to Waruu but to
his estranged half-brother Koen.
Another violent attack is
blamed on the Hairies as Koen
seeks out his Aunty Linda
(Deborah Mailman) in The
Zone for answers.
Realising Koen is the
Cleverman she wonders what
impact this will have on her son
Waruu who has been waiting
for the day he would step into
the auspicious role.
Later Koen shows off his
power to his friends who
marvel at his incredible selfhealing ability. But a voice in
Koen’s head leads him to
a mysterious lab where he
makes a daring attempt to
rescue a woman who seems
to be something magical.

An empowered Koen
(Hunter Page-Lochard)
tries to rescue the
mysterious Kora
(Alexis Lane).

Koen is shocked
when he grabs
Kora’s arm and
is sent flying by
a jolt of power.
While Waruu’s raid of the
Containment centre goes
horribly wrong, Koen and his
friends Blair and Ash (Stef
Dawson) try to work out who
and what the mystery woman
is. Naming her Kora (Alexis
Lane), Koen is shocked when
he grabs her arm and is sent
flying by a jolt of power.
Wealthy businessman Jarrod
Slade (Iain Glen) resumes his
efforts to continue the work he
started with Jimmy by finding
the new Cleverman. Assuming
it’s Waruu, he heads into The
Zone but is rejected by the
anarchist before realising
that the powers have gone to

someone else. He approaches
Koen with a lucrative offer to
join forces. Koen must decide
whether to join the charismatic
Slade or continue his incredible
new journey alone. SW

KOEN WEST

(Hunter Page-Lochard)

Bad boy Koen has always felt
like an outsider. Orphaned
when his parents were killed
in a car accident, Koen was
raised by his Aunty Linda and
resented by his half-brother
Waruu who blamed him for
the death of their father. Koen
rejects his Aboriginal heritage
but uses it to his advantage at
times. He will do anything for
his best friend Blair and Blair’s
girlfriend Ash, who is also
Koen’s occasional lover.

WARUU WEST
(Rob Collins)

A leader in his community,
Waruu is determined to protect
the most vulnerable in a hostile
world. While he genuinely
does want to help his people
he is also driven by ego and
sometimes puts the greater
good before his own
family. Waruu believed
he was destined to
become the Cleverman
and thought the role
would help him do more
for his community. When
the person he hates
most inherits the powers
instead, his anger could
drive him to do the
unthinkable.

JARROD
SLADE (Iain Glen)

Koen has unexpectedly
been given the special

UNCLE JIMMY
(Jack Charles)

Uncle to Waruu and Koen,
Jimmy has been a father figure
and taught them about their
culture. He has struggled with
the role of Cleverman, conflicted
by the voices in his head and
those who need help. This has
led him to Slade, who flattered
Jimmy with his interest in his
stories and knowledge. But
Jimmy has lost control of the
relationship and given up more
than he planned to. Passing
on the role of Cleverman is
his way of making things right.

GEOFF
MATTHEWS

(Andrew McFarlane)

The Minister for Immigration and
Border
Control is
the man
behind the

Hairypeople scare campaign.
Using fear and the media he
spreads the propaganda and
makes himself look like the
person the city can count on
to save them from what he
is promoting as the enemy.
But there is a dark side to this
politician whose particular
interests are best kept secret.

HAIRYPEOPLE

One family among the Hairy
community is central to this
Cleverman story, and is headed
by father Boondee (Tony Briggs)
and mother Araluen (Tasma
Walton). They have three
children, Latani (Rarriwuy Hick),
Djukara (Tysan Towney) and
Jirra (Val Weldon) who all are
impacted in different ways by
the Containment Authority’s raid
on their new city home. Hairies
have different DNA to humans
but are identified by the pelt of
hair covering their bodies. They
also have great strength and

JARROD

A Richard Branson-type
figure, Slade is a selfmade business mogul who
has interests in several
industries. But he is also

social conscience and is
passionate about science,
fascinated with finding

Similar in appearance to her co-star and onscreen mum Kristian Alfonso (Hope), Jovanni
brings a natural feel to her role as Ciara Brady,
sharing close chemistry with Alfonso that makes
them believable as mother and daughter.

ALL ABOUT VIVIAN: American model and actress
Vivian won showbiz acclaim from the age of 15 after
her parents signed her up to a talent agency. Quickly
winning the title of Fitness Model of the Year, the Texan
native signed with DreamScope Entertainment and

Orchid Girl in the online soap The Bay in 2014 as well
as a couple of films. With Spanish and Italian genes,
Vivian has an older brother and a twin brother, Christian.
ALL ABOUT CIARA: Nicknamed Doodlebug by her dad
Bo, Ciara was born in a warehouse while her mother
Hope was being held captive by her deranged ex-lover
Patrick Lockhart. Later surviving a traumatic abduction
masterminded by a corrupt cop, Ciara rebelled as her
parents’ marriage collapsed amid the turmoil. Scarred

obstinate and feisty girl who dabbled in blackmail and
matchmaking for her mum. Now a teenager, Ciara was
recently raped by her disturbed friend Chase Jennings.

Raechelle now has more than 10 years of dance
experience on her resumé. She’s also appeared in
the TV series In Your Dreams and has developed a
passion project alongside her twin. With Karina
as director, Raechelle wrote the short film

ALL ABOUT OLIVIA: Orphaned as a
child by her father Lachie’s death from
a brain haemorrhage and her mother
Chloe’s death in a car crash, Olivia
was briefly the subject of a custody
battle between Chloe’s foster mother
Irene and her paternal grandmother
Diana. Now a teenager, Olivia has
returned to Summer Bay to live
with Irene who exposed Olivia’s
past of childhood sexual abuse
and self-harming with the help
of Olivia’s romantic paramours
VJ and Hunter. Later, Olivia
supported Irene through a bout of
alcoholism and committed to Hunter
by consummating their relationship.
She’s also developed a rivalry with
Hunter’s ex-flame Lindsay who she
succeeded in forcing out of the Bay.

WHAT’S TO LIKE ABOUT HER:
Imbuing Olivia with a feisty,
take-no-prisoners attitude, Banno
immediately captured viewers’
attention with her ability to
transform Olivia from vulnerable
(during her tragic sexual abuse
revelations) to sassy and outspoken
(when banishing Lindsay).

Finn has been estranged from his biological father
Chris Warner since he was a baby. This year, a
grown-up Finn was hired as the hospital’s newest
surgeon by his unwitting stepmother Rachel who
was later shocked when he introduced himself to
Chris as his long-lost son. Despite having a strained
relationship with his father and half-brother Harry,
playboy Finn has made a distinct impression on
Ferndale’s female population, earning himself

WHAT’S TO LIKE ABOUT HIM:

Aside from his obvious blonde good looks, Whiting

personality into the character. He says that he and Finn
share the same sense of humour and cheekiness and
both care deeply for their families. ➜

JAMES LASTOVIC

(Joey Johnson, Days of Our Lives)

❯❯

ALL ABOUT JAMES: If James had followed his first career choice he would
have been a professional wrestler and not the talented young actor gracing
television screens that he is today. Supported by his single mum Lucienne
who only-child James describes as being “my mother, father, sister, best
friend and sometimes worst enemy”, he began and then dropped acting
classes at age seven. He ultimately returned to them when a back injury
ended his wrestling dreams, training at the Ruskin School of Acting in
Santa Monica, California. Prior to Days, Lastovic starred in commercials
and scored his first paid acting gig in the 2013 movie A Talking Pony!?!.
ALL ABOUT JOEY: Enduring a premature birth at only 26 weeks gestation and
a kidnapping just months later as well as the traumatic divorce of his parents Steve
and Kayla as a child, Joey returned to Salem as a teenager in 2015. In turmoil
after running away to find his estranged father, Joey caused trouble for his parents,
struggling to cope with his fractured family situation. After going on a near-deadly
drug-taking binge, Joey secretly worked with old Johnson family enemy Ava Vitali
to reconcile his parents, innocently falling in love with her along the way. After
realising that Ava used him to manipulate his father and to kidnap and try to kill
Kayla, Joey’s intense hatred for Ava boiled over and he smothered her to death
in cold blood. Since then, Joey has been struggling with a guilty conscience.

WHAT’S TO LIKE
ABOUT HIM:

One of Days’ most talented
young finds ever, Lastovic
has really shone in recent
months, expertly lighting
up the screen portraying
a staggering array of
complicated emotions. Within
the same episode, Lastovic
has the ability to seamlessly
shift from immature
vulnerability and teenage
belligerence (in scenes with
his parents), to anger (when
railing about his problems)
to uncontrollable rage (when
murdering Ava).

FELISHA COOPER

(Sasha Thompson, The Bold and the Beautiful)

❯❯

ALL ABOUT FELISHA: North Carolina native Felisha may be the
daughter of a culinary teacher and an army drill sergeant but it was the
acting industry that attracted her, particularly after she was discovered
just three weeks after moving to LA. Going on to appear in her first film
All Cheerleaders Die, Felisha also guest-starred in episodes of Criminal
Minds, NCIS: Los Angeles and Rosewood as well as having a recurring
role in The Last Ship. The actress has also had an affinity for soaps
from childhood, saying that she grew up with lots of Southern ladies
who loved the shows. “They watched all the stories, flipping channels
back and forth,” she commented. Away from B&B, Felisha has a role
in upcoming comedy series Swedish Dicks. In her spare time, she loves
dancing and binge-watching TV comedies like Friends.
ALL ABOUT SASHA: Smart-mouthed and ambitious, Sasha arrived in
LA with a few scores to settle. Secretly revealing that she was Julius
Avant’s illegitimate daughter that he’d rejected years earlier, Sasha
blackmailed him for a share of the good life that he and his family were
experiencing. Finally finding a modelling job at Forrester Creations
opposite best friend/half-sister Nicole, Sasha made blatant plays for
Nicole’s boyfriend Zende, prompting Nicole to get her fired. Vowing
revenge, Sasha pursued Zende and when he and Nicole broke up
over her surrogate pregnancy, Sasha successfully seduced him.

WHAT’S TO LIKE ABOUT HER:

Cooper easily commands a strong presence in her role, oozing sassiness
and a seductive lure. In scenes with veteran performers, she holds her
own, especially when going toe to toe with Obba Babatunde’s Julius.

LILLY VAN DER MEER ❯❯
(Xanthe Canning, Neighbours)
ALL ABOUT LILY: Sixteen-year-old Queenslander
Lilly is currently fulfilling her lifetime dream to
be an actress, having been in love with the
profession since she was five. She’s the first in
her family to try acting and while Neighbours
is her first major role, she’s had small parts in
the TV series Terra Nova and Camp as well
as the short films Off Track and Black Betty.
She’s also dabbled in minor stage productions
of Hairspray, Alice in Wonderland and Ivy
Shambitt and the Sound Machine.
ALL ABOUT XANTHE: Making an immediate
impression in the neighbourhood, a glamorous
Xanthe tried to scam food from her grandmother
Sheila who had no idea the brazen blonde
was actually her granddaughter. After winning
Sheila’s sympathies with the truth about her
circumstances, Xanthe befriended Piper Willis
who eventually couldn’t condone Xanthe’s
petty crimes of stealing and selling stolen exam
papers to raise cash to flee to the Gold Coast.
Confronting Xanthe about her antics, Sheila
suffered a heart attack, leading Xanthe to being
briefly taken into care before Sheila convinced
social services to entrust the girl to her care.
Since then, Xanthe has attracted the romantic
attentions of Ben Kirk but is now the subject
of a love triangle as he and newcomer Angus
Beaumont vie for her affections.

WHAT’S TO LIKE ABOUT HER:
It’s obvious that dad A’s influence
has been a success given
Martinez’s triumph in capturing
the desperation of a scared young
mother who’s torn between the
overwhelming maternal bond to
her baby and the realistic need
to give him what she feels could
be the best life possible.

DEVON
MARTINEZ
(Shawn Taylor, The Young and
The Restless)
*Warning: Contains Story Spoilers

ALL ABOUT DEVON: Acting is in Devon’s
genes, having grown up as the daughter
of soap superstar and current Days cast
member A Martinez (Eduardo). A Yale
School of Drama graduate, Devon credits
her dad with being “a huge part of my
[acting] journey” as he allowed her to visit
the various soap sets he worked on through
her childhood, giving her valuable insight
into the business that now surrounds her. It’s
help that has also led to Devon dabbling in
producing, having produced and starred in
the short film Before Your Eyes in 2014.
ALL ABOUT SHAWN: A pregnant teenager
in her third trimester, Shawn arrived in
Genoa City to consider adopting her baby
to Nick and Sage before moving in with
them after her apartment had a burglary.
After her baby’s birth, an attached Shawn
agonised over keeping the baby herself.

Tackling her role with instant gusto, Van der Meer has easily won her
way into viewers’ hearts with her ability to like Xanthe regardless of her
behaviour. The actress is also being compared to Neighbours alumnus Margot
Robbie (ex-Donna) who, like Lilly, had very little acting experience prior to
the soap, but showed a strong depth of acting range from the start.

WHAT’S TO LIKE ABOUT HER:

ADAM
FIELDING
(Kirin Kotecha, Emmerdale)
*Warning: Contains Story Spoilers
ALL ABOUT ADAM Of Irish-Italian
heritage, 23-year-old Birmingham-born
Adam comes from a military family and
lived across the UK while his father served
tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Crediting the constant change in locations
throughout his childhood for influencing
his career choice, Adam’s only acting
has been his starring turn in Emmerdale.
ALL ABOUT KIRIN: The 17-year-old son of
Rakesh Kotecha, Kirin made an enigmatic
entry to the village when he passed himself
off as 24 to win the affections of the
much-older Vanessa Woodfield. Despite
her horror at learning the truth, Vanessa
couldn’t resist the urge to indulge in a
passionate love affair with him. Along
the way, Kirin developed a fast and strong
friendship with the troubled Belle Dingle.

WHAT’S TO LIKE ABOUT HIM:

For an acting novice, Fielding was inundated with strongly controversial
material from the very beginning. Impressive in his ability to believably
portray Kirin’s Asian heritage, Fielding can also flawlessly alternate
between playing charming ladies’ man when seducing Vanessa or classic
teenage rebellion whenever he clashes with Rakesh. SW

‘You’re my

sister’

Since arriving in LA,
Sasha Thompson has
secretly campaigned
to force Julius Avant to reveal
that they are father and
daughter. She has grudgingly
kept her silence while chipping
away at the already-strained
relationship between her
pregnant half-sister Nicole and
her boyfriend Zende.
Now that Nicole and Zende
have broken up and Sasha
has successfully and openly
bedded the sexy Forrester
photographer, she’s feeling
more secure and unafraid of
breaking her silence if it means
holding onto her man.
Unsurprisingly, Julius (Obba
Babatunde) quickly attacks
his secret daughter over her
despicable actions, making it
clear to Sasha (Felisha Cooper)
that he won’t tolerate her role
in Nicole’s (Reign Edwards)
misery. Turning on Julius, Sasha
spits that she’s his daughter
too and he should love and
support her as he does Nicole.
Aggravated by his
negativity, Sasha coldly
petitions Nicole to support
her romance with Zende
(Rome Flynn) by showing her
happiness for them. Disgusted
by the idea, Nicole retorts that
although Sasha is gorgeous
and not pregnant, she’ll never
accept her, prompting Sasha
to ominously remind her that
they’re more like sisters than

says that Zende loves her,

Nicole thinks of Sasha

Desperate not to destroy his

Abby, Ashley has steadfastly

Ashley has sought distraction

Recognising that he

unencumbered by shadows or

that he and Ashley shared an
intimate moment while they
were trapped together in the

Despite fearing that her

Scoffing at Stitch’s plea for

crying that the wedding isn’t

Finding her mother, Abby
bluntly asks Ashley, “Do you

and Stitch aren’t having an

they care about each other,
he and Abby have a oncein-lifetime love that shouldn’t

the sentiment, Stitch pleads
with Abby to forgive them,
promising not to keep any

Appeased, Abby agrees
to marry Stitch.
However, the emotional
stress of the situation finally
takes its toll on Ashley.
Suffering from crippling

in the snow in the park. In
her unconscious state, Ashley
envisions her father John’s

her his “Beauty” and urging
her to admit that her health

“You know what this is.”
Rattled by her father’s

Expressing interest in his

CANE
(Daniel Goddard) stages a fierce
argument with his wife over Lily’s affair with Joe. Buying
into the friction, Joe comforts an upset Lily who uses her
feminine wiles to lure Joe into a false sense of security.
On the pretence of wanting to make love, Lily takes Joe
to the Abbott cabin but becomes wary of him as he sets
up a romantic atmosphere. Anxious to avoid intimacy,
Lily is eager to put the plan she and Cane devised into
action and get a confession out of Joe before she has to
sleep with him. Unfortunately, Joe is suspicious of Lily’s
awkwardness and, deducing that she and Cane have
set a trap for him, angrily refuses to let her leave the
cabin. Back in Genoa City, Cane worries that the plan
has backfired badly when he can’t make contact with
his wife. Tracking Lily’s whereabouts with the police’s
help, Cane rushes to his wife’s rescue.
At the cabin, the tension escalates as Lily fails to calm
Joe who shouts erratically at her for trusting Cane over
him. Desperate to escape, Lily begs Joe to tell her truthfully
if he framed Cane for abduction and extortion so he could
win her love. Admitting it, Joe rants that he loves Lily and
is a better man for her than Cane. Playing on his emotions,
Lily pleads with him to let her leave but he hisses that he’ll
never let her go and roughly grabs her.
Suddenly, Cane and Devon (Bryton
James) burst in and try to defuse the
situation as Joe raves maniacally
about being tricked. Finally, he openly
confesses to Cane that he framed him
for the crimes to wreck his marriage
and steal Lily. Hearing Joe’s confession,
an arriving Paul (Doug Davidson)
arrests Joe and takes him away to jail.
A shaken Lily bursts into tears and
collapses into Cane’s arms, relieved

the newlyweds make love

Nevertheless, thoughts of the
missing LIAM remain prominent
in Steffy’s mind.

He has more vivid memory flashes

prompting him to interrogate
QUINN about “their” wedding.
A frightened Quinn lashes out at
Liam, making him suspicious that
she doesn’t want him to recover

Wyatt badgers Quinn for the

LA, BILL frantically searches for
a missing Liam and warns Steffy

his experimental treatments.
Once she wakes again, she
has amnesia and cruelly rejects
DEVON, insisting she only loves
her husband Neil! Hilary clings to
Neil as she struggles to accept that
she cheated on Neil with Devon
and is now married to him.
✽ Devastated by Devon’s

her. She continues with NEVILLE’s
treatment while a jealous
GWEN forces Neil to confess
his culpability to DEVON, who

never happened. Later, Hilary
recovers her memories but tells
a shattered Devon she still doesn’t

BANANA AND COCONUT BREAD

There’s nothing quite like remaking an old favourite using new ideas and new ingredients, and this nourishing banana
bread wins people over time after time, even though it’s quite different from traditional banana bread. I’ve used dates
to replace the refined sugars typically used for this, as well as a mixture of shredded coconut and brown rice flour in
place of wheat flour. Spelt flour is also a great option if brown rice flour isn’t on hand

SERVES 8
INGREDIENTS

125ml coconut oil, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla paste
4 eggs, beaten
3 very ripe bananas, mashed
8 Medjool dates, pitted and chopped
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
65g shredded coconut
135g brown rice flour

1
2

Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a 10 x
22cm loaf (bar) tin with baking paper.
In a medium-sized bowl, mix the melted coconut
oil with the vanilla, eggs, bananas, dates and
bicarbonate of soda. Add the shredded coconut and
brown rice flour and fold in until well combined.
Pour this mixture into the lined loaf tin and
bake for approximately 45-60 minutes, or until
a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then
slice and pack up in a piece of baking paper
or brown paper with cotton twine, for a picnic.

WHAT
ABOUT
LIAM?

I enjoy watching The
Bold and the Beautiful
every day. At present
I am wondering why
no one seems to be
concerned about Liam
(SCOTT CLIFTON).
Bill (DON DIAMONT)
sent a text message at
the insistence of Katie
(HEATHER TOM) but
other than that no one
else is doing anything.
Steffy (JACQUELINE
MACINNES WOOD)
usually doesn’t take no for
an answer so why isn’t
she raising the alarm?
And how can she jump
into the arms of Wyatt
(DARIN BROOKS)?
M. Dixon, Mt Hawthorn,
WA.

SPACE IS
THE PLACE

Your “new show” feature in
Soap World 282 has got me so
excited about what will soon
be on television. All of the
dramas sound fascinating but
I am most looking forward to
the Mars Project with lovely
Aussie Georgina Haig as I love
anything set in space. It’s also
exciting to see two former golden
girls of TV, Katherine Heigl
and Sarah Michelle Gellar,
make their comebacks. It’s been
a long time between quality
shows for those two who were
born to be stars.
L. Cunneen, Melbourne, Vic.

O.J. SIMPSON TRIAL RIVETING

Wow what an enthralling series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson has been.
Watching the program made me a little nostalgic and reminded me just why this horrifying and
sad case took over the public consciousness. All performances were incredible and it was so
interesting to see the Kardashians before they turned into fame-hungry reality stars. The standout
performance was Connie Britton who played Faye Resnick, Nicole Brown Simpson’s friend, who
later wrote a book about Nicole. Wish the series didn’t have to end.
P. Patterson, Gold Coast, Qld.

STAR STYLE TRAVEL

Gondolas and other boats navigate

The view from St Mark’s bell-tower,
showing Giudecca Island and the
rooftops of churches and homes.

IT’S NOT JUST
LOVERS WHO
FLOCK TO THE
FLOATING
ITALIAN CITY
– CELEBRITIES
LOVE IT, TOO

I

f one fact rings true about
the north-east Italian city
of Venice it’s that there’s no
other place like it on earth.
A cluster of tiny islands on the
coast of the Adriatic Sea, Venice
is a mass of contradictions:
achingly beautiful, arguably
tired and crumbling in places,
and absolutely worth a visit.
Just ask the writers, artists and
actors who’ve loved and lived
here for centuries — in fact,
GEORGE CLOONEY and
AMAL ALAMUDDIN tied the
knot in Venice in 2014, bunking
down at the luxe Hotel Cipriani
on Giudecca Island. (We’re
sure the guests — who included
EMILY BLUNT, JOHN
KRASINSKI, MATT DAMON,
BILL MURRAY and CINDY
CRAWFORD — enjoyed being
only a boat ride away from the
hustle and bustle!)
Then there are the A-listers
who jet in annually for the
Venice Film Festival, part of
la Biennale di Venezia and the
oldest film festival in the world.
Everyone from KRISTEN
STEWART, ELIZABETH
BANKS, RALPH FIENNES
and TILDA SWINTON made
an appearance on the 2015
red carpet, and the 73rd
festival this August is set to
be equally sumptuous.
Film buffs will already know
the city from The Talented

the Ca’Sagredo, now a luxury

DANIEL CRAIG kept us on
the edge of our seats in Casino
Royale (2006), with a scene shot
between the famous Accademia
and Rialto bridges. And then
there’s JOHNNY DEPP and

ANGELINA JOLIE’s romantic
comedy thriller The Tourist
(2010), featuring the city’s Hotel
Danieli in the heart of Venice.
Depp was so taken with the
city he reportedly outbid an
Arab prince to buy a palace

on a vaporetto (the official
“waterbus”) and take a trip

Venice and the sumptuous
palazzo right on the canal’s
edge. These were once the
homes of every rich family
in town and with any luck
you may spot Johnny’s 17th
Century Palazzo Dona
Sangiantoffetti, believed to
have cost $US13.4 million!
There’s romance at every
turn in Venice, whether you’re
stealing a kiss in a gondola or
on one of the 400-odd bridges.
Make sure to visit the Ponte di
Rialto for its unrivalled views
over the Grand Canal, and
the Ponte dell’Accademia,
a popular proposal spot (and
reportedly where GREG
WISE popped the question to
Oscar-winning legend EMMA
THOMPSON). The limestone
Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of
Sighs) connecting the Doge’s
Palace with the prisons, is also
striking. It’s so called because its
windows afforded convicts on

St Mark’s Square, in the heart
of Venice. The cafes are
expensive here but the spot
is a must for any visitor.

St Mark’s Square is one of
these — and while the coffee
prices will cripple you, it’s worth
queuing for the Basilica di San
Marco and the view from the
bell-tower. The square has also
played backdrop for many films
and TV shows, with JUDE LAW
spotted here in January filming
miniseries The Young Pope.
When sunset rolls around,
a Bellini at Harry’s Bar may be
on the cards, and the birthplace
of this Venetian cocktail is a nice
way to follow in the footsteps of
TRUMAN CAPOTE, ALFRED
HITCHCOCK and WOODY
ALLEN. But you’ll pay for the
privilege and you’re better off
at the Skyline Rooftop Bar on
the eighth floor of the Hilton.
Like Venice itself, the views up
here are pretty special. SW

When it comes to getting
around, forget maps; comfy
shoes are all you need. There
are no cars and the maze-like

laneways are easy to
get lost in — but they’re
also full of treasures:

STAR STYLE BEAUTY

Winter

wow!
J

ust because it’s getting cooler, it’s no excuse to stay huddled
up at home and forget about your beauty routine. We
all get lazy over winter and sometimes it’s hard to get
motivated during the colder months. Here we steal some
red-hot trends for this frosty time, from celebrities like Kate Hudson
and Jessica Chastain, and reveal how to get their glamorous looks
so that you too can look steaming hot all through the chilly season.

Classic red lips

A classic red is classic for a
reason. It will glam up any look
with just one smear on the lips,
which is why we always see
stars like Rose Byrne sporting
it on the red carpet. To get her
Rose-y red lips, first outline

Blackcurran
lips

This winter, we’ve looked f
than the wine and the berr
shades, and opted for a d
colour of lippy. If you’re a
daring, like Kate Hudson,
a shade of blackcurrant
lipstick to boost your look,
and pair it with subtle shad
so that your lips stay the
statement. To get Kate’s
bold look, apply a dark
colour to your lips,
starting from the outer
corner of your lips and
working your way to the
centre using a thin brush
so you don’t smudge
outside the line. For
a longer-lasting pout,
go over your lips once
more to secure the colour.

The eyes never lie, and right now
they’re telling us there is nothing
sexier than a smokin’ hot smoky

love with Jessica Chastain’s todie-for eyes and luscious lashes.
For steamy eyes like Jessica’s,
first sweep a soft grey shade onto
your lid to create a base for the
smoky look. Then using a small
rounded brush, apply a dark
grey to the crease of your lid,
starting at the outer corners and
blending inwards. Take the same

The star (Maya on B&B)
was another top name
who went for white. Karla
chose chic wide-leg pants

teamed with a fun pop of
magenta on her shoes.

A little black dress with
a lot of sex appeal was
the option for the actress
(Phyllis on Y&R) who was
a presenter on the night.
Strappy sandals and a gold
clutch completed the look.

Red was the rule for the star
(Jennifer on Days of Our

Melissa was nominated for

Christel Khalil

The Australian beauty (Ivy on

The actress (Lily in Y&R)
made a statement in a deep

back and a daring split.
She teamed the dress with
sandals and a silver clutch.
