Social Work
In today’s presentation I’d like to show you an overview of social work profession,
examine some substantial values and identify the core competences relevant to social
work.
Let’s start by looking at the principal aim of social work profession which is to promote
social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and
liberation of people to enhance well-being. Besides, social work addresses the multiple,
complex transactions between people and their environments trying to enable all people
to develop their full potential and enrich their lives.
Therefore, social work is focused on problem solving and addresses the barriers,
inequities and injustices that exist in society basing on some values as respect for the
equality, worth and dignity of all people, and they are embodied in the profession’s
national and international codes of ethics.
So, as I said, the profession of social work was founded on a set of core values and
principles that still guide its unique purpose and perspective today. These core values
are collected in the Code of Ethics for Social work and include Human Rights, social
justice, inherent dignity and professional conduct.
The first one, Human Rights, declares that social work is based on respect, promoting
human dignity and proposing the treatment of each person as a whole.
The second one, Social Justice, asserts that social workers have a responsibility to
promote social justice, in relation to society generally, and in relation to the people with
whom they work.
And the last one, Professional conduct, affirms that Social workers have a
responsibility to respect and uphold the values and principles of the profession and act
in a reliable, honest and trustworthy manner.
So, Ethical awareness is fundamental to the professional practice of social worker. And
for that reason, we can remark an association called The International Association of
Schools of Social Works whose main goal is to develop and promote excellence in
social work education, research and relationship in order to enhance human well-being.
In short, we have to take into account the importance of Social Work because for more
than 100 years, social workers have helped millions of people challenge their
circumstances and change their lives, and pushed institutions to value and support
persons in need.
This profession allows you to fight for people’s rights, protect the vulnerable and
support those who need support.
Thank you for your attention.
