Introduction: Solar energy is the energy received by the earth from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy. energy. Solar energy inuences Earth’s climate and weather and sustains life. Although solar energy only provides 0.!" of the world’s power# e$perts believe that sunlight has the potential to supply !000 time as much energy as the world currently consumes. %roadly spea&ing# solar energy is a term for fo r describing a range of methods for obtaining energy from the sun. 'or instance# wind# biomass and hydropower are all a ll forms of solar energy energy.. (ind develops through lows and highs in temperature. (ind drives waves. )ainfall# created by sun*warmed evaporated water feeds the rivers tha thatt are sources of hydro power power.. 'ossil fuels are also forms of stored solar energy. energy. +oal# oil and gas formed hundreds of millions of years ago from decomposed plant matter. ,lant matter that grew by aid of the sun

Important Applications of Solar Energy in Modern Days Some of the important applications of solar energy are summari-ed below: i/ Space cooling and heating through solar architecture# ii/ ,otable water via distillation and disinfection# iii/ Solar coo&ing# iv/ Solar hot water# v/ ay lighting# vi/ 1igh temperature process heat for industrial purposes# vii/ Solar air air*conditioning# *conditioning# viii/ Solar desalination# i$/ Solar electricity 2 photovoltaic# $/ Solar electricity 2 thermal# $i/ Solar vehicles# $ii/ Solar chimney

Uses of Solar Energy The use of solar energy for space heating of buildings :  3he architecturial design of the buildings helps in in their passive space heating using solar Energy Energy.. 'ollowing strategies are useful for passive space heating: a/ ,rovide large south*facing windows b/ ,rovide an entire wall of double*gla-ed windows. c/ ,rovide a heavy dar&*coloured south facing wall behind a layer of glass# with room air circulating by convection between the wall and the glass. d/ ,rovide a at roof covered by a pond of wat water er.. ,rovision should be there for an insulating screen cover for cooling re4uirement in summer.

Advantages of Solar

Solar energy is a resource that is not only sustainable for energy consumption# it is inde5nitely renewable at least until the sun runs out in billions of years/. Solar power can be used to generate electricity# it is also used in relatively simple technology to heat water solar water heaters/. 3he use of s&ylights in home construction constru ction can also greatly reduce energy e$penditure re4uired to light rooms in a homes interior during the day.

Solar panels also re4uire little maintenance. Af After ter installation and optimi-ation they are very reliable due to the fact that they actively create electricity in 6ust a few millimeters and do not re4uire any type of mechanical parts that can fail. Solar panels are also a silent producer of energy# a necessity if dealing with pic&y neighbors. 3he federal government has also introduced generous ta$ credits for individuals in dividuals and companies that invest in solar and other clean energy systems.

isadvantages of Solar

3he primary disadvantage of solar power is that it obviously cannot be created during the night. 3he power generated is also reduced during times of cloud cover although energy is still produced on a cloudy day/. Solar panel energy output is ma$imi-ed when the panel is directly facing the sun. 3his means that panels in a 5$ed location# such as the building above# will see a reduced energy production when the sun is not at an optimal angle. 7any largescale solar 8farms8 combat this problem by having the panels on towers above left/ that can trac& the sun to &eep the panel at optimal angles throughout the day.

Even todays most e9cient solar cells only convert 6ust over 0" of the t he suns rays to electricity electr icity.. (ith increased advances in solar cell technology this number is li&ely to increase. %esides their low conversion e9ciency# solar panels can be a substantial initial investment. 1owever# the cost of solar panels incurred is only the initial cost# after buying and installation they create free energy for use.

+onclusion Solar energy is the future source of energy energy.. In order to save the future generation from the harmful e;ects of fossil fuel# e;orts are re4uired at international level to promote the use of solar energy for domestic and industrial purpose. )eliance

on solar energy shall have its positive e;ects on the environment as well.
