St. Louis’ Most Talented Teens Take Fox Stage
Fox charitable foundation shines spotlight on teens
by Jaime Mowers
A handful of talented high school students will get a chance to shine on St. Louis’ most famous stage when they bring their acts to the Fabulous Fox Theatre for the Teen Talent Competition. The fourth annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition, which will be held on Friday, April 4, 8 p.m., at the Fox, will feature 20 teenagers in 12 acts showing off their talents while vying for thousands of dollars in scholarships, prizes and awards. The panel of judges will include local performing arts celebrities like Mike Isaacson, executive producer of The Muny. The competition’s producers liken the contest to that of popular TV shows such as American Idol and America’s Got Talent. Fox Theatre co-owner Mary Strauss said she started the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation several years ago to shine the spotlight on teenagers pursuing the performing arts. In 2011, the foundation reintroduced the competition after a 25-year hiatus to showcase the region’s most talented teens in the performing arts. “The sports kids got all of the accolades and you never heard of kids in the performing arts,” said Strauss, who serves as the foundation’s board president. “I wanted to give them an opportunity to be in the limelight and perform on the Fox stage, and get awards and scholarships.” More than $25,000 in scholarships, prizes and awards will be given to the top competitors on April 4. Finalists will also have an opportunity to perform at area events throughout the year at venues such as The Muny, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, Webster Groves’ Art and Air Festival, and others. The finalists won the opportunity to perform at the Fox by making it through the competition’s earlier rounds. At the start there were 145 acts and 192 performers from 78 high schools and seven home schools in the St. Louis area. The final 12 acts include everything from a hula hooper to singing tap dancers to rappers and a classical pianist. “It runs the gamut, but that’s what’s really great,” Strauss said. Students will be trying to sing, dance and play their way into the judges’ hearts, and will be scored on technical ability, stage presence, interpretation and originality. They’ll also be trying to win over the audience, as there is a $1,000 Audience Choice Award available this year. Strauss not only loves watching the teenagers perform, but also enjoys helping them through the process. “It’s very exciting because it shows the kids the audition process,” she said. “The judges give them positive feedback and what to improve on, so it’s a very positive experience.” The show’s producers also help the finalists put the finishing touches on their acts before they step onto the big stage. “Our choreographers and producers help them put it together like a Broadway show, complete with their costumes and all,” Strauss said. “Then they get to strut their stuff and show St. Louis what they can do. It’s as good as anything on TV.” St. Louis University High School senior Thomas Fields, who will perform his Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack act entitled “Dressing Room Warm Up” in the finals, said the experience of auditioning and working with the competition’s producers has been amazing. “Being able to perform on the Fox stage is crazy enough, but to have them help you do it is even more incredible,” Fields said. “It’s all about putting your best foot forward, and getting ready for the audition is a reward in and of itself. I’m really, really excited to perform on the Fox stage.” The St. Louis Teen Talent Competition is free, but tickets are required and available through the Donesha Buhr of Fresh Start North Academy and Circus Harmony performs her hula hoop act entitled “Daring Donesha” for the judges during the preliminary round of the competition held at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park in February. “Daring Donesha” is one of the 12 acts that will be in the finals of the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition at the Fox Theatre on Friday, April 4. photo courtesy of Kevin Lowder Fox box office at 527 N. Grand Blvd. or Metrotix at www.metrotix.com. All seating is general admission and is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Nine Network will broadcast a special hour-long program on the 2014 Teen Talent Competition on Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m. The Foundation The Teen Talent Competition is just one of the events put on by the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation. Strauss founded the nonprofit organization in 2002 with the mission of fostering, promoting and encouraging young people in the St. Louis region to discover and participate in live performances. The foundation also hosts Kids’ Night at the Fox every year where children get to see a show for free and participate in activities beforehand. “It’s another opportunity for kids to go to the Fox for free and another evening to show kids about live performances,” Strauss said. The Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation also provides budding performance artists with an opportunity to take master classes where they can learn song and dance routines from Broadway classics from the stars themselves. The foundation also invests in the future of young performers by providing grants to nonprofit St. Louis area organizations focused on youth art initiatives and education in the performing arts. Since its inception in 2002, the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation has provided $1.9 million to more than 97 organizations in the area. Casting Announced For “Henry IV” & “Henry V”
Shakespeare Festival production opens May 17
Jim Butz will play the expansive role of Prince Hal/King Henry V in Shakespeare Festival St. Louis’ (SFSTL) productions of “Henry IV” and “Henry V,” May 17-June 15, at Shakespeare Glen in Forest Park. Butz is a St. Louis Jim Butz native and winner of two Kevin Kline awards for his previous festival performances as Marc Anthony (“Julius Caesar”/2006) and Hamlet (“Hamlet”/2010). “Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2,” written originally as two separate plays, will be edited to fit into one evening. It will open on May 17 and will be directed by Tim Ocel. “Henry V,” directed by newly appointed SFSTL associate artistic director Bruce Longworth, will open on May 24. The productions will then play on alternate evenings and will be produced to stand alone as complete evenings of theater. There will be two double-feature Saturdays – June 7 and 14 – when the audience will be able to see both plays back-to-back during a matinee/ evening performance. In the past 13 years, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis has attracted more than 600,000 people to its annual free performances in Forest Park. For more information about the productions and a full list of cast members, visit www.sfstl.com.

Carmon Colangelo’s “Ernesto & Emily.”

Colangelo’s “Storms”
from page 1
Colangelo is also showing smaller versions of the hurricane storms, created as old-style collectible postcards, suitable for framing individually or in groups. They express dramatic flashes of the artist’s process and narrative, much like one might send a postcard with a summation of an experience or event. The exhibit is a staggering visual journey, combining aesthetic awe with abject terror. With masterful skill, Colangelo presents a beauty that will make the viewer whirl, as in the fury of a storm, while his back-story challenges awareness and recognition of human agency. This incredibly provocative series includes the eight large prints — as well as a wall full of the spirited smaller prints, happily available at beginning collector prices. “Storms” opens with an artist reception at Bruno David Gallery, 3721 Washington Blvd., on April 4. The exhibit runs through May 3. For more information, email info@ brunodavidgallery.com.
