Akashic Books
“This is more than just a ‘message’ book. . . . The imaginative premise is
wrapped around a moving story about gender, identity, friendship, bravery,
rebellion vs. conformity, and thinking outside the box.”— School Library Journal
“Changers should appeal to a broad demographic. Teenagers, after all, are the
world’s leading experts on trying on, and then promptly discarding, new
identities.”— The New York Times
Changers Book Two: Oryon in the four- part Changers series for young adults finds
our hero Ethan/Drew on the eve of her second metamorphosis— into Oryon,
a skinny, African American skater boy with more swagger than he knows what
to do with. Enter a mess of trouble from the Changers Council, the closed-
minded Abiders, the Radical Changers (RaChas), and his best friend Audrey— at
least she was his best friend when Oryon was Drew— and now, it’s complicated.
But that’s life (and life, and life, and life) for Changers, an ancient race of
humans who must live out each year of high school as a completely different
person. Before next summer, Oryon will learn what it means to be truly loved,
scared spitless, and at the center of a burgeoning national culture war. Most of
all, he will learn again how much the eyes of the world try to shape you into what
they see— and how only when you resist do you clearly begin to see yourself.
T Cooper is the author of four novels and the nonfiction book Real Man
Adventures. His shorter work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times,
the Believer, and O, The Oprah Magazine. He is currently a visiting professor in fic-
tion at Emory University.
Allison Glock- Cooper is the author of the New York Times notable book
Beauty Before Comfort. Her writing has been published in GQ, Rolling Stone,
the New Yorker, and she is cofounder (with T Cooper) of the empathy project

In Chris Scofield’s powerful debut, teenager Lily Asher takes her first
steps toward a strange, loving journey to self- acceptance and belonging.
Set against the changing terrain of middle- class values and the siren calls of
art and puberty, The Shark Curtain invites us into Lily Asher’s wonderful, terrible
world. The older of two girls growing up in suburban Portland, Oregon, in
the mid- 1960s, her inner life stands in quirky contrast to the loving but dys-
functional world around her.
Often misunderstood by her flawed but well- intentioned parents, teenage
Lily orbits their tumultuous love affair, embracing what embraces her back:
the ghost of her drowned dog, a lost aunt, numbers, shoe boxes, werewolves,
rituals, and stories she pens herself (including one about a miscarried sibling
she dubs “Frog Boy”). With “regular” visits from a wisecracking Jesus, an af-
fectionate but combative friendship is born— a friendship that strains Lily’s
grasp of reality as much as her patience.
From the violence of a peeping tom and catching Mom in flagrante delicto
with the neighbor to jungles in her closet, butlers under her bed, and barking
in public, Lily struggles to balance her family’s expectations with the visions
that continue to isolate her.
Dark, funny, and thoughtful, Chris Scofield’s debut novel, The Shark Curtain,
details thirteen- to- sixteen- year- old Lily’s first steps on her strange but loving
journey to self- acceptance and belonging.
Chris Scofield is a novelist and short story writer. She’s worked with authors
Ursula K. Le Guin and Tom Spanbauer and is a former special education, art,
and preschool teacher. Scofield studies cello, travels internationally, and lives
in Eugene, Oregon, with her husband and two goldfish.

Meet Jude: a glamorous boy in high school
who fends off the haters with his bulletproof heart.
“Raziel Reid is a really extraordinary guy. He’s got a great thing going.”
— Anne Rice
School is like a film set. There’s The Crew that make things happen, The
Extras who fill empty spaces in rows of desks, and The Movie Stars, who
everyone wants tagged in their Facebook photos. But flamboyant high school
student Jude Rothesay doesn’t fit into any category: he isn’t a part of The Crew
because he isn’t about to do anything unless it’s court- appointed; he’s not an
Extra because nothing about him is anonymous; and he’s not a Movie Star
because, even though everyone knows his name, he’s not invited to the cool
parties. Jude is the self- professed flamer who lights the set on fire, but before
everything turns to ashes from the resulting inferno, he is determined to get
Luke Morris to be his date to the Valentine’s Day dance.
Inspired by a true story, When Everything Feels like the Movies is an edgy, extrava-
gant novel for young people, full of gender- bending teen glamour, dark mis-
chief, and enough melodrama to incite the paparazzi. A boy who smells like
Chanel Mademoiselle, calls Blair Waldorf his biggest childhood influence,
and reads Old Hollywood star biographies like gospel doesn’t have the easiest
path to travel in life, but somehow, Jude paves his road with yellow bricks and
makes us all wish we could join him over the rainbow.
Raziel Reid is twenty- three and a graduate of the New York Film Academy. He
currently lives in Vancouver.

Stella is back barking on Broadway! Author and acclaimed actress/performer
Bernadette Peters offers a charming tale of how two former shelter dogs, after
a few ruff- patches, became devoted friends.
In this companion title to Peters’s New York Times bestsellers Broadway Barks
and Stella Is a Star, the beloved canine heroine Stella finds herself alone. Her
“mom” (who looks a lot like Bernadette Peters) goes on a journey to bring
a shelter dog named Charlie to live with them. After a car ride with stops
in Oklahoma and St. Louis, Charlie arrives in what Stella thinks of as her
territory!
At first, Stella is jealous of all the attention Charlie gets. But when she’s
hurt and needs a friend, Charlie shows her that he can be just that. In the
end, Stella dances and Charlie yodels while Mom plays piano and sings.
Young readers with new siblings, or new pets, will connect emotionally
to this pet pair. Kids will understand Stella’s frustrations and will root for
Charlie, too!
Praise for Stella Is a Star:
“Murphy’s paintings with collage provide all the ideals of ballet, from frothy
tutus to embroidered bodices, and her animals’ expressions are priceless. Her
upright pigs in leotards are graceful and Madame’s stern expressions are flaw-
less. . . . This story will please ballet fans, and any little girls who have felt left
out.”— School Library Journal
Bernadette Peters’s dazzling career includes starring roles on Broadway and
in theaters and concert halls around the world. Her signature roles include the
witch in Into the Woods, Mama Rose in Gypsy, and Sally in Stephen Sondheim’s
Follies. She is also the passionate cofounder, along with Mary Tyler Moore, of
Broadway Barks, a charity that finds homes for shelter animals. This organi-
zation and her own beloved former shelter dogs are the twin inspirations for
this book.
Liz Murphy was born in England and is a graduate of the Kingston Art
College, where she majored in graphic design. She has fulfilled both her
childhood ambitions of “becoming a mom” and “being able to draw and paint
to my heart’s content.” Among her slate of well-received children’s books are
Bernadette Peters’s Broadway Barks and Stella Is a Star.

The world- famous Texas Tenors offer a tuneful, Western- style romp on a
ranch full of frisky critters. This charming story, illustrated vibrantly and
playfully by Brian Fitzgerald, is the debut picture book by the wildly popular
trio, who were the highest- ranking vocal group in the history of America’s Got
Talent in 2009.
When the stallion, Wyatt, runs after the mare, Ruby, he starts a chain reac-
tion as a cowboy, cowgal, and assorted ranch animals join the chase- around.
What’s all the hubbub about? Wyatt just wants to play a game with Ruby! He
doesn’t mean to cause such a ruckus!
The famed Texas Tenors— whose performance home base is Branson,
Missouri, and who have performed in more than five hundred concerts
worldwide over the last four years— will be recording a song version of the
story and promoting it in their concerts, on their website, and in book sign-
ings. The song will be available as a free download.
Whoa, Ruby! Whoa, Wyatt! Y’all get back in place!
You’re causin’ a ruckus on the ranch!
You’re causin’ a ruckus on the ranch!
With the cowboy a- shoutin’
And the cowgirl a- yellin’
You’re causin’ a ruckus on the ranch!

The hogs are gruntin’,

Getting in their way—
Hey! Hey!
JC Fisher sings country. Marcus Collins is a pop vocalist. John Hagen? He’s
an opera singer. Together they are the world-renowned Texas Tenors! The
group has a performing home base in Branson, Missouri, and tours the world,
with sold-out shows in over twenty countries. They skyrocketed to fame on the
television program America’s Got Talent. Subsequent albums earned slots among
Billboard’s chart-toppers in the Classical, Country, and Independent Album

The dubious outer space “medical” practice of Doctor Bugspit— featuring
oddball patients, staff, and cases— offers the perfect prescription for curing
boredom and lack- of- humor- it is in A Day in the Office of Doctor Bugspit.

connecting it to the people who created it, raised it in victory, preserved it,
and were inspired to create our national anthem in its honor. Hartland breaks
down complex actions and processes in kid- friendly terms and includes fasci-
nating historical details.
Hartland’s first three books in the series have earned starred reviews. These
titles chronicled the people and processes that helped bring a sphinx, a dino-
saur, and a meteorite to major American museums. Now, Hartland makes a
tattered cloth in the Smithsonian feel kid- interesting and personal.
Praise for How the Meteorite Got to the Museum:
“As the Common Core State Standards place increased emphasis on non-
fiction for young students, this groundbreaking effort fits the bill and does
it well.”— School Library Journal, starred review
Praise for How the Dinosaur Got to the Museum:
“What’s special is the reminder of the wide range of tasks involved. The ex-
cavators, movers, preparators, curator, night watchman, welders, riggers,
exhibits team, and cleaner all have their parts. An excellent complement
to any dinosaur- book collection, this enriches and extends that interest.”
— Kirkus Reviews, starred review
Praise for How the Sphinx Got to the Museum:
“The overall elicited emotion is awe.”— Booklist, starred review

them— from the ghosts themselves! Paranormal plots and an anxiously awkward
almost- hero will draw phantom fans to this eerily funny debut authored by a
co- creator of the Goosebumps series.
Susan Lurie offers a just- right mix of humor and kooky- creepiness for
young readers with a taste for “horror” that isn’t too intense or scary in this
latest title in the I Can Read Chapters series. These paperbacks (with a smaller
trim size and denser text) are just right for kids with growing reading compe-
tence who are ready to move on from Blue Apple’s Jump- Into- Chapter series.

those oh-so-familiar sibling antics. The twins’ good-humored attempts to

with its plucky lead characters, will appeal to boys and girls alike.

Blue Apple Books Launches Blue Banana Imprint
Blue Apple Books is pleased to announce the launch of a new imprint, Blue Banana. Blue Banana’s
emphasis on interactive formats will appeal to parents who want to engage their children in hands-on,
non-digital activities that both strengthen literacy and entertain.

Many Blue Banana titles come with a value-added component. Bib pads include complementary
coloring pages, activity books have pages of stickers, and surprises like wall decals, or a special airplane
spoon, are included. What kids will find in every Blue Banana product, however, is fun-meets-smart
content paired with bold, bright, kid-friendly illustrations.
All indications are that Blue Banana titles will be a great fit for the children’s marketplace, both in

Cicada Books is a London- based publishing company specializing in illustrated books with high
production values and edgy design. Our list is small but diverse, covering subject matters ranging
from architecture and maps to human anatomy— it’s all about presenting subjects we’re interested in
from a new angle and in a beautiful way. All our books have a strong editorial concept at their heart,
making them accessible to a broad audience.
Following the success of Draw Me a House, an interactive book of architecture, Cicada’s nonfiction
childrens’ list is developing and expanding. We pride ourselves on our keen eye for emerging artistic
talent, and we have been working with some stellar illustrators on our upcoming titles. We endeavor
to match production to content, experimenting with die-cuts, flaps, color effects, and foiling to
create tactile books that reach out to adults as well as children.
We believe that in the digital age, the book as object is more important than ever, and we aim to
create beautiful, engaging books that inform, delight, and inspire.

A lavishly illustrated atlas of anatomy, which features die cut elements
to create a sense of traveling through the body.
This large- format, beautifully presented book presents a journey through the
human body both figuratively and literally. With exquisite, painstakingly de-
tailed pencil illustrations by Kanitta Meechubot, the body is separated into
layers on each page, and each layer is die- cut to show the layers underneath.
As the pages are turned, young readers will find themselves traveling through
the body in a way that will delight and inspire.
In the second section of the book, text by ER doctor Vanessa Jessop ex-
plains the functions of the body’s key organs in clear, accessible tones. Further
illustrations accompany the text so that the heart, the lungs, the brain, the
liver, etc., are all vividly brought to life.
Harking back to anatomy atlases of the last century, the book has a clas-
sical simplicity to it, which is complemented by the clean, minimal design.
Exquisite packaging sets it all off, including a fabric spine, a bold metal-
lic cover, and creamy, heavy paper stock. A gorgeous gift book to keep and
treasure.
Kanitta Meechubot is a paper engineer and illustrator known for her intri-
cate papercuts, which have been featured in numerous publications includ-
ing the cover of Granta magazine and a number of titles by Portobello Books.

An illustrated introduction to maps in which children can draw
and engage with maps of rooms, towns, countries, and continents.
A playful introduction to maps and global geography. Interactive, warm il-
lustrations allow young readers to learn and engage with the fundamentals of
maps by drawing maps of their room, house, and town. Cities are compared to
one another in terms of geographical size and population size. Subway maps
can be completed and colored in. Countries’ resources, foods, languages, and
landmarks are brought to life, by doodling, completing, redesigning, and em-
bellishing the illustrations. Weather maps, climate change, bird migration,
and ocean geography also find their place. Plenty of space is left for maps to
be drawn, flags to be designed, and transport systems to be built. Finally, a
fold- out poster slotted into the back of the book allows readers to create their
own world.
The book is printed in four pantone colors, creating a bright, almost neon
canvas for the fun within. Printed on heavy creamy paper stock, this is a great
gift book that follows on from the success of Cicada Books’ Draw Me a House.

Two baseball heroes die in a tragic accident.
What happens in the rural hometown they left behind?
People in the small town of Greenton mark their lives from that day in late
summer when crowds lined the streets to see off high school athletic stars John
Robison and John Mejia. That was the day the Johns, as they were known by
adoring fans in Greenton, left for state college, and never made it there— or
back. The Johns had spent their high school years putting that nowhere los-
ing town on the map with playoff runs in football and state championship bids
in baseball. For Concepción “Chon” Gonzales, the days that the Johns headed
out and didn’t return was the first day of his new life. He had waited all his
growing-up years for a shot at Araceli when one of the Johns, John Mejia,
stole her away. Now, while Greenton mourns, while the Johns’ families be-
come actors in a spectacle of grief, while Johns memorabilia is sold in every
gas station and convenience store in town, while Araceli has to endure a se-
nior year in the watchful gaze of the whole town, Chon Gonzales makes his
slow methodical move on the only girl he’s ever loved, hoping maybe that she
won’t notice what he wants.

Kinga and his classmates create a dance to honor the
cranes of Bhutan and to create awareness for their plight.
Every year, Kinga and his classmates wait for the black- necked cranes to return
to the kingdom of Bhutan. The birds fly south over the highest mountains in
the world to winter in the valley where Kinga lives, deep in the Himalayas.
The cranes have been visiting the valley since ancient times, but every year,
fewer cranes return. Kinga is concerned. “What can I do?” he wonders. He
and his classmates approach the monks for permission to create and perform
a dance to honor the cranes and to remind the Bhutanese people of their duty
to care for them. The monks caution them to first watch the cranes to see how
they move and learn from them. The children watch and practice. And prac-
tice some more until the big day when they perform before the king of Bhutan.

A bilingual story of family and traditional wisdom: Tata teaches grandson
Aaron natural remedies through healing neighbors and family.
“This charming little book will introduce young readers to safe and effec-
tive natural remedies from the native traditions of the American Southwest.
A good way to learn about the healing power of plants.”— Andrew Weil, MD
Aaron has asked his grandfather Tata to teach him about the healing remedies
he uses. Tata is a neighbor and family elder. People come to him all the time
for his soothing solutions and for his compassionate touch and gentle wis-
dom. Tata knows how to use herbs, teas, and plants to help each one. His wife,
Grandmother Nana, is there too, bringing delicious food and humor to help
Tata’s patients heal. An herbal remedies glossary at the end of the book in-
cludes useful information about each plant, plus botanically correct drawings.

Roni embraced the languages, cultures, and people on both sides of the bor-
der. Now a retired bilingual educator, her first book, My Nana’s Remedies / Los
Remedios de mi Nana, is a classic, a parent’s and teacher’s friend for teaching chil-
dren traditional values.

uses his exacting illustrative skills to bring to life this story of family and
plants. Born in Zacatecas, Mexico, Antonio has lived in the Juárez–El Paso

Bedtime! Nikko wrestles all of the masked luchadores
jumping on his bed. And he counts them at the same time!
Nikko loves bedtime. Why? Because that’s when his bed turns into a magical
wrestling ring for the masked luchadores that he loves. They bounce up and
down like crazy. His mom, of course, doesn’t believe Nikko. She accuses him
of jumping on his bed. But that’s just not true at all. She just can’t see what
Nikko sees. And to prove his point— zoosh! Here comes luchador numero
UNO with a golden mask and a silver cape. Oh, wow. Number TWO wears an
orange mask with yellow flames. Another looks like a jaguar and he growls!
A rooster! A bull with horns! And a dragon that breathes fire! And so it goes
until TEN luchadores are jumping on Nikko’s bed. That’s when the Great
and Mighty Nikko puts on his mask, taking on all ten wrestlers at once and
defeating them soundly. Ahh, a fresh victory under his belt, now it’s time for
Mighty Nikko to catch some zzzzzs!

A book for children— and their parents, teachers, and cool
grown- up friends— documenting America’s famous and unsung heroines.
Like all children’s A– Z books, this one illustrates the alphabet— but instead of
“A is for Apple,” A is for Angela— as in Angela Davis, the iconic political ac-
tivist. B is for Billie Jean King, who shattered the glass ceiling of sports; C is
for Carol Burnett, who defied assumptions about women in comedy; D is
for Dolores Huerta, who organized farmworkers; and E is for Ella Baker, who
mentored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and helped shape the Civil Rights
movement.
And the list keeps getting better, spanning several centuries, multiple pro-
fessions, and twenty- six diverse women. Each letter introduces us to a woman
and her story, except for X, which stands for all the women whose names we
don’t yet— and might not ever— know. There are artists and abolitionists, sci-
entists and suffragettes, rock stars and rabble- rousers, and agents of change
of all kinds— over half of whom are women of color, and many are queer or
transgender. This accessible, inspiring, well- researched text is accompanied
by gorgeous paper- cut portraits: artwork rooted in an aesthetic history of
politically charged woodcuts and prints.
American history was made by countless phenomenal women. By offering
a diverse and fresh array of female role models, we can remind readers that
there are many places to find inspiration, and that being smart and strong and
brave is rad. The book includes an introduction that discusses what it means
to be “rad” and “radical,” a glossary of terms, a bibliography for further read-
ing, and a resource guide for parents and teachers.

Enormous Smallness is a nonfiction picture- book biography about the poet
E.E. Cummings. Here E.E.’s life is presented in a way that will have children
identifying with the young Estin, as well as playing with words and asking ques-
tions. Lively and playful, the book also presents some of Cummings’s most
wonderful poems. It does so by integrating them seamlessly into the story to
give the reader the cadence of his voice, along with an age-appropriate intro-
duction to his poetry.
In keeping with the epigraph of the book, given by these words from
Cummings, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are,”
Matthew Burgess’s narrative emphasizes the determination it takes to follow
one’s own vision and the encouragement E.E. Cummings had in doing so.
The story of his life focuses on his childhood years, which nourished the seeds
of the person Cummings would become.
Matthew Burgess teaches creative writing and composition at Brooklyn College.
He is also a writer- in- residence with Teachers & Writers Collaborative, lead-
ing poetry workshops in early elementary classrooms since 2001. He was
awarded a MacArthur Scholarship while working on his MFA, and he re-
ceived a grant from the Fund for Poetry. Matthew’s poems and essays have
appeared in vari ous journals, and his debut collection, Slippers for Elsewhere,
was published by UpSet Press. His doctoral dissertation explores childhood
spaces in twentieth- century autobiography, and he completed his PhD at the
CUNY Graduate Center in June 2014.
Kris Di Giacomo is an American who has lived in France since childhood.
She has illustrated over twenty- five books for French publishers, which have
been translated into many languages. This is her sixth book to be published by
Enchanted Lion Books. The others are My Dad Is Big And Strong, But . . .; Brief Thief;
Me First!; and The Day I Lost My Superpowers.

A surprising, humorous, and graphically exquisite presentation of
sixteen classic animal poems that spark with fun and cleverness.
Poetry and children belong together, and for a long time the music and play-
fulness of verse wove itself through children’s days and lives. Beastly Verse aims
to return the wonder of poetry to children’s lives by presenting sixteen exqui-
sitely illustrated poems, four of which have the surprise and pleasure of fold-
outs. Consisting of playful as well as powerfully memorable poems, Beastly
Verse transports the reader into a richly worded world of tigers, humming-
birds, owls, elephants, pelicans, yaks, snails, and even telephones! A playful
romp through verse, rhyme, and gorgeous images, this book carries children
into the poetic realm in a way that is not only fun and inviting, but inspir-
ing as well! Representing poems from Anonymous, and some less well- known
poets, this volume also includes poems from Lewis Carroll, William Blake,
Robert Desnos, Hilaire Belloc, William Cowper, Christina Rossetti, and D.H.
Lawrence. Both short and long, these poems can be read and reread, commit-
ted to memory, and enjoyed all life long.

From the Williamsburg Bridge to Grand Central Station and Central Park,
Americanine shows us New York City with fresh eyes!
Here, upon his return to Paris, a French dog recounts his amazing trip to
New York City to his dog pals. Sharing his visit so they can really, truly see it
through his eyes, the reader ends up seeing it from this perspective, too, in
page after glorious page of vibrant, kinetically sketched images! Whether it’s
the Wonder Wheel at Coney Island, the Guggenheim Museum, Grand Central
Station, or a pug looking in a doughnut shop window, Americanine pulsates with
aliveness and charm. Marked by energy and humor, and rendered from a
haute dog perspective through starry French eyes, Americanine doesn’t give us
the elegant, platinum New York of Alfred Stieglitz, but rather a bold, contem-
porary, color fully diverse city that feels bright, nonstop, and like no other. In
these pages you will find real people in a real city, perceived with the romance
and flair of a young French artist.

Inspired by the question, “What are they doing at this moment on the other
side of the world?” The World In A Second focuses on natural and human events
happening all over the world at the same time. Cleverly combining text and
image, the variety of the world is recreated in these pages, depicting a mul-
tiplicity of spaces, realities, and contexts and how these are felt by different
characters. Here, landscapes, cultures, traditions, routines, and habits come
together to give us an image of the things that separate us but also unite us. By
fixing a particular second in time, the book depicts twenty-three different lo-
cations, along with clues about how they are experienced.
Both a travel guide and a philosophical approach to difference and di-
versity, time speeds around the world, and yet, as you focus on the illustra-
tions, which stand as true evocations of place, time slows, and for moments
it even feels as if time has stopped, as you are transported into the purity of
a moment—a moment of bird flight, of daydreaming while dish washing, of
wondering about how something felt and what followed.

Comprised of fun and playfully surprising contemporary illustrations and a
satisfying tall tale, Why Dogs Have Wet Noses is a refreshing and memorable take on
an old story. Told with wit and humor, this is a secular story of how it started
to rain not long after the world began, and it was the kind of rain that pounds
down and never stops. Being not only wise but adventurous, a man named
Noah decided to build a lifeboat, and he set about gathering as many kinds
of creatures as he could think of. Fearless and friendly, he even had the good
sense to invite slugs, spiders, and the other slimy, creepy- crawly creatures that
most people try to get rid of by mushing or spraying. He also let a funny look-
ing dog with a big soft nose trudge on board all by himself. Had he not done
so, the Ark, as you may not know, would definitely have sunk. A lively tale of
man and dog, Why Dogs Have Wet Noses is sure to delight with its quirky, highly
witty illustrations!

On a small square of cement sidewalk, there once lived a teeming colony of
teeny tiny red spiders. These spiders were so tiny that when it rained they
never got wet and when people stepped on them they never got squashed.
And there were so, so, so many of them that names couldn’t be found for all
of them. Even so, they were all quite content living there on the same patch
of sidewalk. All except one little spider, who decided that he’d had enough
and that the big, wide world was far more suited to him than a teeny tiny strip
of sidewalk. So he stamped his feet and hollered and said he would run away.
Seeing the little red spider’s frustration, his grandfather stepped forward to
explore the situation with his grandson and together, in a wonderful shared
moment of conversation and imagination, the little red spider succeeds in
going off on the grandest adventure ever! The book’s back matter includes a
nonfiction section with photographs about red ants.
John Miller spent much of his grade school years with friends, tramping
about the woods, lakes, rivers, and swamps of Morris County, New Jersey.
These adventures inspired his children’s books and articles about beavers,
trout, starlings, and other animals for many magazines. John’s first book,
Winston & George, was published in March 2013, even thought it was created over
fifty years ago. This is John’s second book.

porary work, even though they were created over fifty years ago.

This collector’s edition is a beautifully produced
concertina volume, bound in cloth, numbered,
and with a letterpress bookplate signed by Arthur Geisert.
Based on the 2013 picture book edition of Thunderstorm, this foldout accor-
dion realizes the book in its true form, since even the picture book was based
on one continuous illustration that runs 415 inches long.
Here, those 415 inches of illustration are not broken up into pages, but
rather they finally unfold into an astonishing and absorbing length of beau-
tiful images. This edition gives us a midwestern landscape over the course of
a storm with its continuous momentum, flowing as time actually does, natu-
rally and unceasingly.
Bound in cloth, with a signed letterpress bookplate inside the front cover,
and numbered, each copy of this edition is a true collector’s volume.
It is our great pleasure to present this edition. We are publishing it as a
celebration of Arthur Geisert’s profound and beautiful commitment to his
craft and to recognize and honor his devotion to depicting the Midwest in
picture book form. We firmly believe that Geisert would be celebrated as a
national treasure in Japan and that he should be celebrated as an American
original in the deepest sense and as a true master of his craft. Without reser-
vation, we stake his numerous picture books as part of our national heritage
to be celebrated and treasured.

A refreshingly honest portrayal of divorce, this beautifully illustrated
book offers children the hope of staying whole as parents split.
“How can you not love a children’s author who sees so clearly from her reader’s
point of view?”— Julie Bowen, actress, Modern Family
“This book provides, through honest language and evocative imagery, a
uniquely realistic view of how children experience divorce. While neither
softening nor white washing this difficult topic, Higginbotham offers an ulti-
mately comforting message to parents and children experiencing separation
and divorce.”— Lisa Spiegel, LMHC, director of Soho Parenting
Kids are told, “it’s for the best”— and one day, it may be. But right now, di-
vorce is the worst. With honesty and humor, Anastasia Higginbotham beau-
tifully conveys the challenge of staying whole when your entire world, and
the people in it, split apart. The first children’s book to tackle divorce from a
child- validating point of view, Divorce Is the Worst is an invaluable tool for fami-
lies, therapeutic professionals, and divorce mediators struggling to address
this common and complex experience.
Divorce Is the Worst is the first book in a series of feminist children’s books,
Ordinary Terrible Things, which deals with common childhood crises and
how children themselves find their own way to cope and grow.
Anastasia Higginbotham is a writer and illustrator in Brooklyn, New York,
whose childhood experience of divorce inspired this book.

Can a hen be a boy’s best friend? Aarón thinks so!
Hens are smart, savvy, and they like to cuddle, as Aarón explains in this pic-
ture book about his relationship with his best friend, Margaret, a Rhode
Island Red hen.
Award-winning artist Amelia Hansen’s illustrations and author Sandy
De Lisle’s text engage young readers with the full range of joys and respon-
sibilities of raising backyard hens. Aarón’s family interacts with their six
adopted hens; they play with and pet the hens, tuck them in at night and keep
the chicken coop clean and protected. When their mother bakes a birthday
cake for Aarón’s younger brother, Eduardo, Aarón makes sure that Margaret’s
eggs will be part of the cake.
Young readers will discover that hens are affectionate, that they can tell
time, recognize people they’ve met, and solve problems, as well as learning
that hens require ongoing care after they stop laying eggs. The final page of the
book lists additional resources for parents and other adults.
Sandy De Lisle is making her debut as a children’s picture book author.
Sandy has worked as a public school teacher and currently as senior man-
ager of content development for the American Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Amelia Hansen is the award- winning illustrator of It’s Raining Cats and Cats!, Are
You Ready for Me?, It’s Raining Pups and Dogs!, and At the Dog Park with Sam and Lucy, all

Mischief and Malice is a brand new work
from an iconic figure in YA literature.
Set in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the eve of World War II, Mischief and Malice is
a brand new work from an iconic figure in young adult literature. Following
the death of her Aunt Eveline, fourteen- year-old Addie— who we first met in
Berthe Amoss’s classic Secret Lives— is now living with her Aunt Tooise, Uncle
Henry, and her longtime rival cousin, Sandra Lee. A new family has just
moved into Addie’s former house, including a young girl who is just Addie’s
age. Meanwhile, Louis, the father of Tom, Addie’s lifelong neighbor and
best friend, suddenly returns after having disappeared when Tom was a baby.
Between school dances, organizing a Christmas play, fretting about her hair,
and a blossoming romance with Tom, Addie stumbles upon a mystery buried
in the Great Catch All, an ancient giant armoire filled with heirlooms of her
family’s past, which holds a devastating secret that could destroy Louis and
Tom’s lives. Once again, Amoss has created an indelible portrait of a young
girl coming of age in prewar New Orleans.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Berthe Amoss is the author and
illustrator of twenty- eight children’s and young adult books. Her picture book
The Cajun Gingerbread Boy won a Children’s Choice Award, and her YA novel
The Chalk Cross was a finalist for the Edgar Allen Poe Award. She lives on the
Gulf Coast in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

touching story of two brothers who test their limits and learn that no matter
how different they might be, the strongest bond of all is brotherhood.

A beautiful tale about a tiny gardener who learns
how important it is to persist and try, no matter what.
Praise for Emily Hughes’s Wild:
“The pictures speak volumes. I look forward to sharing this picture book with
a wide age range of children, all of whom will enjoy the anarchic pictures and
who will understand its message at a variety of levels.”— IBBY Link Journal
“For my money it’s the one of the most brilliant picture books of 2013.”
— 100 Scope Notes, School Library Journal
There was once a little gardener and his garden meant everything to him. He
worked hard, very hard, but he was just too little (or at least he felt he was).
In this gentle, beautiful tale, Emily Hughes, the celebrated author of Wild,
departs from the larger-than-life Wild- girl of her debut to pursue a littler-
than-life Gardener, in a story that teaches us just how important it is to persist
and try, no matter what the odds.
With delicately woven tapestries of illustrated magic, Hughes once again
transports us to a world not unlike our own, while still brimming with fan-
tasy and wonder.
Emily Hughes was born in Hawaii but lives and works in the United Kingdom.
She is inspired by Chinese cinema and illustrators such as Blair Lent and Gyo
Fujikawa. Her work has been exhibited across the capital and her book Nana
Shaped Like a Banana came second in the 2012 Macmillan Prize for Children’s
Picture Books. Her first picture book has been highly successful in bookshops
and libraries across the United States and United Kingdom.

Delve deep into the mysteries of the ancients as the world’s
foremost collector reveals the secret of his greatest treasure!
Imagine a vault so cavernous that it contained all of the world’s greatest trea-
sures and relics, from mummified remains of ancient monarchs to glistening
swords brandished by legendary warriors. Who could be in charge of such a
vault? How would he have come into possession of such a unique collection?
Who is this Professor Brownstone?
Follow the professor and the epic journeys of his ancestor as we trace the
origins of the very first piece in his collection, the Urn of Uruk. Illustrator
Joe Todd Stanton’s bright illustrations and detailed cross sections will take
you on a quest both across and within the ancient, mythical world. From
Norway to ancient Mesopotamia, you can take a look inside the fabled hall
of Valhalla, slice through the ancient pyramids of Giza, and peer under the
surface of the teeming, enchanted Mediterranean of Odysseus . . .
Joe Todd Stanton grew up in Brighton and was taught to draw by his mother
who is also an illustrator. He studied at Bristol University and got a first
class degree in illustration. Stanton has been commissioned to work for
clients such as Computer Arts, Usborne Publishing, and Aquila magazine.
He was also a contributor for Nobrow 9. He quotes Maurice Sendak and Tove
Jansson amongst his influence for the beautifully surreal yet believable
worlds they create.

Join the inquisitive Toby the Bison in this fact- filled adventure
as he explores the Ice Age Tundra, making friends everywhere!
Join Toby the Bison in this fact-filled adventure as he explores the Ice Age
tundra and meets some of the giants that roamed its icy surface.
Until around twelve thousand years ago, the Earth had been in the grips of
an ice age that was to last a hundred thousand years. The inhabitants of this
frozen landscape lived in some of the coldest conditions the earth has ever ex-
perienced and grew to be immense titans, the likes of which had not been seen
since the dinosaurs. But before these giants grew, they were young and small,
and like Toby, very inquisitive!
Toby and the Ice Giants is a wonderfully illustrated story that delivers digestible
facts about the Earth’s historic inhabitants. Share in Toby’s lively curiosity,
experience the danger of the polar climes, and meet some larger- than- life
characters on the way.
Joe Lillington was born in London and studied illustration at Falmouth
University. He was recently commissioned to illustrate the cover of Stew
Magazine, illustrated a short story in AMBIT magazine, and has exhibited at
Light Grey Art Lab shows and the Just Us collective show.
Lillington explains, “The type of story I liked when I was younger is simi-
lar to the stories I like now. I especially liked Fantastic Mr. Fox, Asterix, and The
Hobbit, which I still find inspiring and fun. I think these stories feed my inter-
est in creating children’s books now. I want to make an interesting story set in
a fun and engaging world.”

Praise for the Dahlov Ipcar Collection:
“I’m glad to see publishers like this, restoring older books with such passion
and attention— taking gentle care, that is, of our rich picture book heritage.”
— Kirkus Reviews
In this unheralded civil rights allegory composed in the heat of the early ’60s,
two little dogs frolic and dream of adventures beyond their wildest imagi-
nations, from jungles of the Congo with towering ebony elephants to the
whitewashed, frigid arctic where the icy white polar bears roam. Dahlov
Ipcar once again pairs her timeless illustrations with fresh original verse
that cele brates the unity, wonder, and beauty of the living, breathing natural
world around us.
Dahlov Ipcar is an American author, artist, and illustrator, whose career
has spanned five decades. She has written and illustrated over thirty chil-
dren’s books and won the NEIBA President’s Award and the Kerlan Award
for Children’s Literature. A true master of color and organic form, Ipcar’s

Book is Victor Escandell’s new book of doodling activities for children. With

sizes and shapes that inhabited the world millions of years ago. All the activi-
ties contained in the book are great fun and an enjoyable way of learning while
playing, cutting, shaping, dot- connecting, and coloring. My Beastly Activity Book
is pure entertainment for both children and grown- ups, who won’t be able to
keep their hands off it!
The book includes a foldout poster and an extensive glossary to learn more
about the fascinating beasts featured in the book.

A magical adventure that celebrates the wonderful
inquisitiveness of all children.
Noah knew he was different. He could see things that others couldn’t, like the patterns in the dust
that floated down on sunbeams.
Noah sees, hears, feels, and thinks in ways that other people don’t always
under stand. He is sensitive and perceptive, he asks questions most people
would never consider, and he doesn’t stop asking until he knows the “why” of
nearly everything. But there’s one question Noah has not been able to answer:
Where does the wind go? Noah Chases the Wind is a colorful and magical adven-
ture that celebrates the inquisitive nature of all children, as well as the unique
characteristics of children on the autism spectrum. Children who see the
world in their own ways may recognize themselves in Noah and learn to feel
good about their differences.

A charming story about a teacher and her crew of preschoolers
imagining what classroom expectations are and practicing them.
It’s just one of those days in Ms. Mya’s classroom, when for one reason or an-
other, things just aren’t clicking. Jamilla is jumping. Ruth is running. And
Reese is roaring like a lion for no reason at all. But Ms. Mya knows what
to do. She gathers up the children, and together they begin a conversation
about expectations. Young children are learning how to control their bod-
ies and emotions—something that can make a classroom feel chaotic and crazy
at times. This book is about the ways one teacher helps her students practice
managing emotions and behaviors to make everyone happier. Read the book
to children to introduce and reinforce these important concepts and support
their development of emotional control and self-regulation.

In every classroom, there is a person who cares about the way each child
learns, grows, and feels—the teacher! The affirming rhyme and fanciful il-
lustrations in A Teacher’s Promise express what all teachers, as well as what all
parents hope for from the teachers they entrust, wish for the children they
teach—that they develop self-confidence, perseverance, curiosity, and an en-
joyment of learning.
A Teacher’s Promise can help ease fears children might have about joining a new
classroom or child-care setting. The book will help reassure children about
the ways adults will guide and teach them, support them when they make mis-
takes, lead them to discover and imagine, and help them make friends.

Wasp’s job is simple. Hunt ghosts. And every year she has to fight to re-
main Archivist. Desperate and alone, she strikes a bargain with the ghost of
a super soldier. She will go with him on his underworld hunt for the long-
long ghost of his partner and in exchange she will find out more about his
pre- apocalyptic world than any Archivist before her. And there is much to
know. After all, Archivists are marked from birth to do the holy work of a
goddess. They’re chosen. They’re special. Or so they’ve been told for four
hundred years.
Archivist Wasp fears she is not the chosen one, that she won’t survive the
trip to the underworld, that the brutal life she has escaped might be better
than where she is going. There is only one way to find out.
Nicole Kornher- Stace was born in Philadelphia in 1983, moved from the
East Coast to the West Coast and back again by the time she was five, and cur-
rently lives in New Paltz, New York, with one husband, three ferrets, one
precocious preschooler, and too many books to count.

Tom survived a devastating flood that claimed the lives of her sister and par-
ents. Now she lives with Bill in his old shed by the lake. But it’s time to move
out— Tom is pregnant.
Diana Sweeney’s young protagonist is tougher than we might expect. The
Minnow shows us not only what Tom has lost. Equally important is what she
has held onto, and the quiet but intense ways in which she thrives.
In her longing for what is lost, Tom talks to fish: Oscar the carp in the pet
shop, little Sarah catfish who might be her sister, an unhelpful turtle in a tank
at the maternity ward. And the Minnow.
Diana Sweeney is a university lecturer and fashion model. The Minnow is her
first novel. She was born in Auckland, and now lives in New South Wales.

Jack Mason grew up as an acrobat in a circus. After the tragic death of his par-
ents, he was sent to live within the gloomy Sunnyside Orphanage in London,
a city of fog and snow, filled with airships, steamcars, and metrotowers
stretching into space.
That’s until he is taken under the wing of the brilliant and eccentric de-
tective Ignatius Doyle. But when a girl named Scarlet Bell comes seeking
Mr. Doyle’s help, little does Jack know how dangerous life is about to be-
come. Scarlet’s father has been kidnapped, and the future of the world itself
may be at stake. Is the evil hand of Professor M pulling the strings? Mr. Doyle
and Jack know there is no time to lose.
With all its twists and turns and helter- skelter action, The Firebird Mystery is
an addictive story and a spellbinding homage to the world of Victorian lit-
erature that will appeal to readers of all ages.
An early ebook version of this novel, under the title The Steam Punk Detective
(no longer available), attracted forty-eight thousand downloads. Text Publishing
offered Darrell Pitt an unprecedented eight- book deal.
Darrell Pitt began his lifelong appreciation of Victorian literature when he
read the Sherlock Holmes stories as a child, before moving on to H. G. Wells
and Jules Verne. This early reading led to a love of comics, science fiction,
and all things geeky.

Introduction by Kirsty Murray
first season at Consortium
Dear readers,
We, at TOON Books, are thrilled to join the community of book lovers, booksellers, publishers, and
reps who have gathered around Consortium to make independent publishing the bright force that it
is today.
All my life, I have made, printed, and published books, working with artists who are also
storytellers. I’ve loved reading and reading comics, and as a mother I have shared that passion with
my own kids. I now want to share that same passion with a new generation of readers. At TOON,
we believe that the way to do that is to publish beautifully produced hardcover books of comics and
visual narratives that bring the text to life in a way that captures young readers’ imaginations. It’ll
make them want to read, read on—and read more. Making sense out of reading with the aid of visuals
may be the best way to become a lifelong reader, one who knows how to read for pleasure and for
information—a reader who loves to read.
We present our books with four reading levels:
• LEVEL 1: First comics for brand new readers
• LEVEL 2: Easy-to-read comics for beginning readers
• LEVEL 3: Chapter books for advanced beginners
• TOON Graphics for Visual Readers, for ages 8+
Take a look. I’m sure you’ll find just the right book for someone you love and want to inspire. And
get in touch at
[email protected]. We want to hear what you think of our books—it will inspire us.

Giggle and learn with a book that’s as informative as it is silly!
What do worms do all day? How do they see? And why are they so cold and
squishy? Find out by going on an underground tour through the hidden
world of earthworms. Kevin McCloskey’s book even shows readers what’s hap-
pening inside a worm’s body— brain, crop, gizzard, and more. The book takes
young readers from “ew!” to “wow!” as they learn about the different ways
worms work hard to help the earth. Kids may pick up many of the life science
lessons contained here on their first read, but they’ll return to We Dig Worms!
again and again to rediscover its story. Deceptively simple, humble yet charm-
ing, this little book reaches surprising depths . . . just like, well, a worm!
Kevin McCloskey teaches illustration at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.
He is married to a librarian who asked him to please create a fun yet educa-
tional book about worms for the children at her library.

A lone robot investigates an abandoned planet.
What happened to the inhabitants?
Robot Investigator by Vincent Stall follows a lonely robot on an expedition to a
mysterious planet that looks a lot like Earth. The story unfolds like a parallel
universe Wall- E as the robot explores what appears to be a pristine landscape.
He meets curious gerbil- like animals and stumbles on . . . a band of feral hu-
mans. Who were they? Why did they turn into wild men? Robot Investigator is
both sweet and melancholy, cute and grisly. Stall’s silent sequences are drawn
with an inky, lush, and elegant line filled with expressionistic colors. Robot
Investigator is Stall’s masterpiece. The book also includes a sixteen- page robot
parts catalog.
