We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family.” Notes from the Pastor: What a moment of grace and a wonderful celebration we had last Sunday with our confirmation mass with Bishop Jackels. It was more meaningful as it would most probably be Bishop Jackels’ last act in Girard as our bishop in Wichita. But of course it was most meaningful with the grace of the sacrament that our High School kids had received. Congratulations to the three of them from Arma: Aubri Ashbacher, Kaylee Bogina, and Jaycie Polhlopek. Thank you to their parents for their unwavering support, thank you to our Confirmation Team for all their sacarifices: Mary McClaskey, Dr. Adam Paoni, Michelle Puckett and Pat Westhoff; thank you to Saint Michael Altar Society for hosting the dinner for the occasion, to our choir and musician, and our Arts and Environments committee, and for all who helped to make the occasion a success and meaningful! Again, congratulations to all! Please pray also for these second grader kids who will be receiving their first communion this Sunday, April 28th: Trevor Amershek, Laklyn Arthur, Alex Brake, Elli DeGruson, Sara Goble, Brandon Leritz, Jaden Norris, Kaleb Scales, and Dawson Stegman. Although most of them are from Girard, Elli DeGruson is from Arma, but all of them are the future of our Church and community. Thank you to their parents for their wholehearted support and for their catechist, Janel Scales. Please continue to pray for these children that the grace they receive will help them grow strong and mature in their faith. Thanks be to God for this grace. Unfortunately we don’t have first communion in Arma this year. We had one kid for first communion in our catechism classes here in Arma but she stopped coming. Hopefully, next year we will have some kids for first communion. Also next week, we will have our May Crowning at the 8AM Sunday mass. Children 1 st to 8th Next Sunday(05/05/2013) 8:00 AM Chase & Tejay Cleland Dave & Dustin Ashmore Cindy Ashmore Marcel Normand Frank Grano & Mary Jo Anderson grades are invited to join in procession of flowers and candles to crown the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Then at noon, our PSR kids, their parents, and our catechists will have a cookout. Thank you again to all our catechists: Cristie Goodman, Lucinda Bonine, Kelly Schaub, and Aubri Ashbacher (as assistant catechist) for all their efforts and sacrifices. There will be a Virtus training session scheduled at 7:00 p.m. after Mass on Wed. May 8. in the large class room at St. Michael Hall in Girard. All who have an interest in helping with the youth this is your opportunity to attend. Finally, thank you for celebrating with me the 27 th year anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. Golden Anniversary The Golden Anniversary of St. Joseph Catholic Church will be approaching near the end of the year. We are looking for pictures of activities of the early years. If you have any you can share, we would appreciate it very much. Give the photos to Father, Karen Pryer, Debra Amershek, or Pat Westhoff. Let us know if we need to copy them or if you want them back. MAY is the Month of Mary The custom of dedicating the month of May in honor of Our Lady had its origins in the Franciscan church of St. Clare at Naples in the 1590s. Around 1800, Pope Pius VII approved May devotions and assigned indulgences to them. The most familiar prayer used by the Universal Church in honor of the Blessed Mother is the “Hail Mary”. In earliest time, it was used as a greeting. Its present form was fixed by St. Pius V in 1568. He was a Pope of the Dominican Order. “The Memorare”, our common devotional prayer, “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary…” has been attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, France in 1140s. According to early Church writings, Mary is the mother of God, the Redeemer; she is the servant and partner of the Lord. She has cooperated in the mysteries of His life on earth. In conceiving Him, in presenting Him in the Temple, in suffering with Him up to His death, she has taken part in the restoring of supernatural life to souls. For those reasons, it would be legitimate to describe her office as one of mediation, of patronage, of intercession, and even of co-redemption. This is a suitable time to draw near the Mother of God. ST. ATHANASIUS and the Nicene Creed: May 2 Athanasius was born in 295 in Alexandria, Egypt when the Roman persecution was nearly over. Catholicism had gained strength and was becoming the legal religion. During this period, there was a priest, Arius, who was spreading a heresy that Jesus was only a prophet, not divine and his following was growing. Athanasius fought it tooth and nail and was exiled by the Emperor. In 325 at the Church Council of Nicea, it was proclaimed that Jesus was both God and Man. This proclamation was pushed forcefully by the then Bishop Athanasius. This is why we pray the Nicene Creed every Sunday proclaiming Jesus as true God and true man. I recall Fr. Ivan Eck, during one of his homilies in the 1980s, saying that “in our own day” there is a type of heresy--that Jesus is a great buddy, a good ole Joe who loves us. We don’t take Him seriously enough. But actually, when he talks of being a good neighbor, Christian charity, condemning fornication as a sin, or we shouldn’t use profane language, He Means It! He will be our Judge at the Second Coming so we should take him seriously and at His Word.” ST. PEREGRINE: Paton Saint of Cancer Victo Peregrine Lazioli was born in 1265, in Forli, Italy, a stronghold of antipapal sentiments at the time. Peregrine’s family opposed the pope who retaliated with harsher church rules for the papal town. Peregrine drifted from the church and was rebellious and hard to live with. St. Philip Benizi, of the Servite community was sent to the town to create peace within the church, but wasn’t well received. In fact, Peregrine was among the hecklers and, at one point, struck the priest. This was a turning point for Peregrine as he made life changes. At 30, he became a Servite brother and spent his life serving the sick and the poor. He kept a private penance of standing instead of sitting whenever possible and he developed varicose veins that broke down into running sores which were diagnosed as cancer, a rather new term at that time. The doctors told him his legs would have to be amputated, but he refused, turning to the Lord instead. He prayed that evening before a crucifix and entered a trance-like state where he saw Christ coming down from His cross to touch his leg. When he awakened, the leg was healed. With the cancer miraculously gone, he lived 20 more years of holiness to all he met. This cure has attracted popular veneration to him all over the work and God has worked many miracles for cancer sufferers, causing him to be named patron saint for cancer victims. He died in 1345 at 80 and his feast day is celebrated on May 4th. Pilgrimage Lands of the Bible Holyland Pilgrimage & Mediterranean Cruise in April 2014. 10-Day Pilgrimage to Italy Our Lady of Lourdes choir has accepted an invitation to be the principal choir, singing the Feast of Epiphany Mass, celebrated by His Holiness Pope Francis! The Choir embraces the opportunity of serving in this role of musical leadership at the Vatican, with a sense of honor, humility and great gladness. The Choir will also present a professionally organized liturgical concert in Rome, usually enjoyed by an audience of over one thousand. This pilgrimage will visit sacred sites of our Christian faith and the beautiful cities along the Amalfi coast as well as the island of Capri, Sorrento, Naples, Salerno, Orvieto and Montecasino and of course Rome! Anyone interested in either singing or going as a pilgrim (nonsinger) is invited to attend a non-committal informational meeting at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 9th & Locust, Pittsburg, on Sunday, May 5th at 6:30pm.
