“The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family.” Notes from the Pastor: You all know that we have this year three RCIA catechumens and two candidates
for adult confirmation. Last November they undergone at mass the Rite of Acceptance. I was told that the parish had never had these rites for some time. So these processes then are also for many of us a refresher and a catechism. First we have to remember that RCIA means the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is a process through which non-baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants for baptism in the RCIA are known as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the Church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the normal way adults prepare for baptism. In 1974 the Rite for Christian Initiation for Adults was formally approved for use in the United States. This process also includes adult men and women who were already baptized but have not yet received the sacrament of Confirmation. When they undergo this process they are distinguished from the unbaptized as they are called candidates. Both catechumens and candidates are to participate in all the studies and the different rites at mass. This second Sunday of Lent they will be going through the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election. The Rites of Sending is held at Saint Michael while the Rite of Election will be held at Saint Francis Church in Saint Paul (although normally it is held at the cathedral. This year for the convenience of the parishes in Southeast Kansas it is done in one of the parishes around our area). Before the Rite of Election, a parish celebrates the Rite of Sending among their catechumens and candidates who have shown the signs of readiness for baptism and confirmation. Their godparents accompany them to the Rite of Election. There, the godparents testify and swear before the Bishop that they have seen God at work in the lives of their companions and therefore they are ready to be initiated into the Church. The Church assembly affirms the godparents’

testimony, and the Bishop, on behalf of the Church, accepts the godparents’ witness. Their names are then recorded in a special book and they are then no longer called catechumens, but "the elect." The process of preparations continue until they receive the sacraments of initiation during the Easter Vigil. After the person is initiated at the Vigil, another period of formation and education continues in the period of the postbaptismal catechesis which is called "mystagogy." This period continues at least until Pentecost and often longer. During the period of mystagogy the newly baptized members reflect on their experiences at the Easter Vigil and continue to learn more about the Scriptures, the sacraments, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. In addition they reflect on how they will serve Christ and help in the Church's mission and outreach activities. Let us include in our prayers our catechumens and candidates for the grace of perseverance in the weeks following. Finally, as we all know our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28th. By March 1st, the seat of the Pope is considered vacant and the cardinals will be called sometime after that to gather together in a conclave to elect the new Pope. Let us also pray for the Church, for Pope Benedict XVI, and for the college of Cardinals. For this intention Bishop Jackels will be offering a mass at the cathedral at 5:30 PM on February 28th. Our masses this Wednesday evening in Girard, February 27th, Thursday morning in Arma February 28th, and Friday morning March 1st in Girard and adoration will also remember this intention. Your presence in any or all of these liturgical celebrations will make our congregation more complete! God bless you! Fr. Roger

Spaghetti Feed Announcements **The annual Spaghetti Feed will be held on March 10 at the hall. Last year’s dinner was a great success because of the tremendous support of the parish community and local businesses. Again, we will need your help to make this year’s dinner a success. **Desserts - parishioners are asked to bring a dessert to the hall on Sunday, March 10 before 10:30am. The hall will open by 7am. **Donations - if you have supplies for the dinner that you would like to donate or if you have something to donate for the prize drawings please contact us as soon as possible. Make Each Day of Lent Count On Ash Wednesday, we heard the call at Mass that echoes our baptism: “Return to me with your whole heart”. The Church asks us to reflect on our sins and do penance for them. Yet, many today hear the warnings, but tend to neglect them. A reason for this could be that the “sense of sin” isn’t as strong as it used to be. I recall when we became Catholic in the 1960s, Lent seemed to be taken more seriously. It was like a 40-day retreat. Nearly everyone fasted and did penance. The Church would sponsor a “Mission” where we’d come to church for four evenings and listen to a visiting priest evangelize on various topics. Rosaries were common before Mass. Confession lines were long--I can remember this clearly. Maybe, because this “sense of sin” isn’t as intense, the need for penance has also lessened. We read today of a growing Catholic acceptance of lower Mass attendance, pre-marital sex, contraception, abortion, pornography, and gay marriage. Check the national polls and see that Catholics are right among those of other religions on most of these topics. We no longer stand out as the exception; we’ve become the rule. We’re aware that we have a fallen human nature due to original sin, but the problem seems to be that many are not only aware of it, but they view it as the cultural norm. If called on it, many wouldn’t consider the above-mentioned transgressions as sin, but as their right to choose! Our Catholic religion means nothing if it doesn’t mean salvation from sin, and that’s exactly what Lent is all about! We need the constant help of Divine Grace through the Mass, the sacraments, prayer, and self-denial if we are to “return to Him with our whole heart”. Fr. Roger reminded us, that in doing penance, we grow in holiness, doing the will of our heavenly Father. To be free of sin, we must humble ourselves, like innocent children. Fr. Ivan Eck once described sin to me: “If we could see sin, it is ugly! It’s worse than leprosy could ever be!” You can see why penance is needed. Let’s all use Lent to get extremely serious about driving sin from our souls. That would be true freedom! March 1 is Friday! Spring is Coming! Most of us will be eager on Friday to turn the calendar. March not only will usher in spring, but the month is also filled with other notable events. The first day of spring is March 20. (as a kid, I recall it was always on the 21st. Oh, well) March is a time for spring-cleaning--in our homes, in our yards, and in our lives. This often means mending and fixing. March, with its days of Lent, is a good time for mending relationships with family, neighbors, fellow workers, and even with yourself. That last one can be accomplished with a good confession. The others can be repaired, usually with a dose of humility. Remember Ed, the uncle you haven’t spent much time with these past ten years? Well, give him a call during these days of Lent. He may be a bit shocked at first, but few of us can resist love and concern. If your neighbor isn’t home on trash day and his container gets blown down the street after pick-up, do him a good turn and retrieve and place it securely in his yard. He’ll appreciate it. You know that lady who never seems to smile at the office? Shoot a kind grin her way next week. It’s worth a try. Other positive ways to make Lent count include making peace with your memories, healing any pain from the past. Practice seeing the other person’s point of view. And keep a sense of humor about you--a great asset in relationships. As to those notable events, remember our annual Spaghetti Feed will be March 10 at the hall. Also, on that date comes the return of Daylight Savings Time (gotta love that!). Two great saints of the Church have their feastdays in March: St. Patrick on the 17th and St. Joseph on the 19th. And we’ll close out the month Palm Sunday on the 24th and Easter Sunday on the 31st. And, according to popular belief, watch “March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb!”
