“The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family.” Notes from the Pastor: Two happy occasions this weekend: Happy Feast of the Ascension of the Lord! The Ascension of Christ into heaven can be read in Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and Acts 1:2. The Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed both affirm the reality of Christ's Ascension and is so important as one of the basic statements of belief of Christianity. The Apostles' Creed expresses that "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." So it can be concluded that the denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection. The significance of Christ's bodily Ascension is that it foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. The ascension of our Lord gives hope to all of us that one day we will follow Him as He Himself said, “…that where I am, there you may be also!” (John 14:3) Is there any greater news than this one? Rejoice! Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers! On this occasion there is no better word in appreciation of our mothers than the words of Blessed John Paul II : “Thank you, women who are mothers! You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God's own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child's first steps, who helps it to grow, and who is the anchor as the child makes its way along the journey of life…” (Letter of Blessed JPII to Women, June 29, 1995) Especially nowadays that the unique vocation of motherhood (female) and fatherhood (male) is threatened to be destroyed by Next Sunday(05/19/2013) 8:00 AM Grant Waterman Frank Grano & Scott Aldrighetti Marcel Normand Ron Pommier Henry & Jill Ashbacher same sex marriages and other societal forces, let us continue to pray for all our mothers and ask the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary as their role echo that of hers : “Motherhood is linked to the personal structure of the woman and to the personal dimension of the gift: ‘I have brought a man into being with the help of the Lord’ (Gen 4:1). The Creator grants the parents the gift of a child. On the woman's part, this fact is linked in a special way to ‘a sincere gift of self’. Mary's words at the Annunciation – ‘Let it be done to me according to your word’ - signify the woman's readiness for the gift of self and her readiness to accept a new life. (Blessed JPII, Mulieris Dignitatem, No 18) May God bless all our mothers always and may they be always open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength! The PSR culmination and cookout last Sunday was a success. The kids have lots of fun! Thank you again to all our catechists and parents for your hard work! Now we are planning for the next PSR school year 20132014. I hope more of our kids with the encouragement and support of their parents will join our PSR classes for next year! We are still in need of a volunteer organist especially for our 4PM mass! If you are interested please let me know! God bless you all! Fr. Roger

Mothers Are the Heart of the Family Thousands of tributes are given each year in honor of Mother’s Day. Beautiful phrases are written and many gifts are purchased to try to make up for times of neglect. Moms appreciate the sentiments and the presents, but we wonder if some mothers would rather welcome the news that their children are following in her footsteps and her teachings. Many mothers live far from their sons or daughters and would really appreciate a visit, rather than a dozen roses through the mail. We could give our moms real “mother’s day happiness” by just being there, or showing her that we’re practicing what she taught us. The greatest praise a mother can ever receive is her children’s lives lived as she guided them. Motherhood mirrors the love of Christ. Just as Jesus laid down His life for the Church, so a mother does for her children in symbolic ways. In the home, she’s the servant of all; thus, in the eyes of God, she is the greatest of all. Happy Mother’s day, all Moms! St. Isidore, the Farmer 1060-11130 Isidore was born in Madrid, Spain, of poor, but God-fearing parents who instilled in him a great love of prayer, particularly the Mass. At an early age, he took up farming, working for a rich landowner and stayed with him for most of his life. He made an average living, married a religious woman, and they had one child, a son, who died in his infant years. After this, he and his wife agreed, henceforth, to live in a marriage of abstinence. Isidore gave faithful service to his boss, but also to God. He never missed daily Mass and even while working in the fields, he prayed to God, the angels, and the saints. It was said of him, “His hand was ever on the plow; his heart was ever on God.” He spend Sundays and holidays visiting the churches of Madrid. He loved the poor and shared his meager food with them, causing him to be slandered by neighbors who envied his holy ways. They’d accuse him of cheating his boss by going to Mass daily and being late for work. One day, his employer checked him out and saw Isidore arriving later to work than the other men. He walked toward Isidore and was about to scold him, but to his astonishment, he looked in the field and saw two strangers, each with a team of white oxen, plowing Isidore’s field for him. When asked, Isidore said that he had never seen them before and didn’t know them. He told his employer, “I ask no help from anyone but God each morning at Holy Mass.” Later, his boss understood that what he’d seen were angels, sent by God, to help His servant, in return for his faithfulness to the Mass. Isidore died on May 15, 1130 at age 70. He was later found to be incorruptible (body doesn’t decay) and was named a saint. He is the Patron of Farmers. He is an unusually important person because of the vital lesson his life can teach us. Christ taught the same lesson in His day, but it really hits you square in the face when we see a person, just like ourselves, who really puts into practice what Jesus taught. Some may choose not to believe the tradition about the angels plowing for Isidore. I believe it because it points out a great religious truth that’s almost drowned out by today’s materialism, namely that the time, talent, and treasure that we give God are never wasted. Not only do they become our treasure in heaven, but we are also rewarded for them on earth. Promise yourself that you’ll try to be more like Isidore. If you can’t give treasure, give of your time to God by trying to attend a weekday Mass. No doubt St. Isidore started out small. Volunteers are needed for Adoration. An hour goes quickly and you’ll gain more than you gave. Isidore would second that.

Patriotic Rosary-We would like to honor all of our Catholic “senior citizens” who have served in the military. Please join us on Thursday, May 23rd, at Noon for a special Patriotic Rosary event at the parish hall of St. Patrick, 424 S. Central, Chanute. We are asking everyone to bring a pot luck for lunch with drinks and place settings provided. Also, bring a picture of yourself, or a loved one who has served our country, and any memorabilia that can be displayed. Special prizes will be awarded to “seniors” who arrive in military uniform. To ensure the hospitality for the day, please register your attendance by calling the Office of Marriage and Family Life at 316-685-5240 or email [email protected]. Missions Update from Carmelite Sisters We were blessed last Sunday with a visit from two Carmelite Nuns, arranged by Fr. Roger, to tell us of the mission work that is being done by them and other orders in Kenya, India, and also in Wichita. Their way of life centers on the meditative, but they told of great mission work among the world’s poorest. Because we live in a world that seduces us to consume and to buy, we need persons vowed to poverty who can remind us that there’s more to life than possessions. Sister said the need is great, but the charity in the Catholic Church continues to meet it. We ought to be endlessly grateful.
