For Information about the—
Sacrament of Baptism
Baptismal Preparation for parents and godparents: 7 – 8:30 pm the last Monday of the month. Call for Reservations. Baptisms are usually the first Sunday of the month.

Anointing of the Sick
Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Sacraments of Reconciliation and first Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One
Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Sacrament of Matrimony
Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Sacrament of Confirmation

A two-year program for freshman/sophomore age teens. Apply through the Office of Religious Education.

NOTE: Adult applicants for the sacraments should contact the Parish Office.

PASTOR’S CORNER
Dear Parishioners,
Just as Jesus is preparing for the completion of his mission, he announces to his disciples:

A new commandment I give you: LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU!
It was here, more than anywhere else in the gospels, that Jesus provided his own life as the blueprint for the life of any and all would-be disciples. In another place Jesus tells his friend, Martha, that he is “The way, the truth, and the life.” But that was a proclamation to her and obviously for our benefit. What we have in today’s gospel passage is nothing short of a commandment. Commandments are not to be taken lightly. Certainly those in our country who have fought for the right to display “The Ten Commandments” would agree. Then there are “The Two Great Commandments: Love of God and Love of Neighbor.” Remember that those who tried to “trip Jesus up” by asking for the greatest commandment were subsequently sent away scratching their heads because Jesus gave them two, the one being “like” the other or “equal” to it. The Benedictines beautifully capture Jesus’ twocommandment teaching when they live that part of their rule which says, “Treat the guest as Christ.” At any rate, Jesus’ new commandment trumps both the ten and the two. If we love one another as he loved us, “keeping” the ten commandments is “a piece of cake,” as they say, and loving God and neighbor is just…well…automatic. As Jesus lived, laid down, and took up his life for us again, did he not count his heavenly Father above all things? Did he not honor his Father’s name? Keep holy all the Sabbaths, honor his father and mother, bear true witness, and mind his own business when it came to other peoples wives and property? All God’s commandments meet in Jesus Christ; no commandment is eliminated and all are fulfilled. Would you even be tempted to argue the fact? Frankly I worry about Christians who want to put a monument of the Ten Commandments in their front yard without the rest of the “Good News”; without Jesus those commandments are so incomplete and unfulfilled. It’s almost as if the New Testament didn’t happen. No, if someone were to approach me about putting up a commandment monument—in order “to make a statement”—it would definitely be Jesus’ commandment: The New Commandment “Love One Another As I Have Loved You!” Jesus Christ, ca 30 AD (or CE) Practically speaking, you would get “a lot more bang for your buck,” if people read it and followed it, and it would probably take up a lot less space on the front lawn. —Msgr. Richard

The Ways of Love
One can feel the energy of a young, growing church in today’s first reading. For Paul and Barnabas, it’s smooth sailing. For the sponsoring church at Antioch, good news. The second reading—a vision—offers a picture of triumph, pure and simple. We might paraphrase God’s direct words to read: “Don’t you see? I make all things new!” The young church remains new and young to this day if and when it follows the command Jesus lays down in the Gospel: “Love one another.” The attitude and actions of love define the disciples and identify them with their master. Every person on this earth can be a disciple. For discipleship does not depend on learning or sophistication or age or arcane knowledge of secret cults. We are asked to study and practice the ways of love, right here and right now in the company of ordinary people.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading—Paul and Barnabas reported how God had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles (Acts 14:21-27). Psalm—I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading—God’s dwelling is with the human race (Revelation 21:1-5a). Gospel—This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35).
