Standing Committee
One cleric and one lay person are to be elected for three-year terms. Description of duties: The Standing Committee meets about three times a year and serves as a Council of advice to the diocesan bishop. Among its responsibilities are granting or withholding consents to the election of bishops throughout the Episcopal Church and interviewing seminarians and recommending to the bishop whether or not they be made candidates for ordination. The Standing Committee is composed of six persons: three clergy and three lay. In the event that the office of bishop is vacant, the Standing Committee serves as the Ecclesiastical authority for the diocese. Persons serving on the Standing Committee should be familiar with the Constitution and Canons, aware of issues in the wider Anglican Communion, and be persons who are willing to undertake a wide range of leadership needs and discernment. CLERGY The Rev. Milton Black, Jr., Rector, Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi Qualifications – Milton is an experienced priest with a passion for mission and possesses gifts of leadership and administration. Philip Cunningham, Vicar, St. Margaret’s, San Antonio Qualifications – Philip is extremely well educated having attended Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA (1988-1992) and Albert-LudwigsUniversitat, Freiburg, Germany (1990-1991), graduating with a B.A. in English and German. In 1996, he graduated from Vanderbilt University with a MBA. In 2008, he graduated cum laude from Nashotah House with a MDiv. One of his real gifts is the ability to understand complicated issues and then explain them to others in an understandable manner. Philip also has ten years experience in corporate finance; prior to entering seminary, he worked at Alcoa (1996-99), Foster Farms (1999-2002), and Children’s Hospital Central California (2002-05). Local Church Activities – Since coming to St. Margaret’s, Philip has implemented a neighborhood community garden; a working relationship with Stahl Elementary to help families in need; “Cleanup with the Vicar,” a group that meets once a week and tackles projects that need doing; a Fall Festival in conjunction with the Pumpkin Patch for the neighborhood; a Wednesday morning Eucharist and book study; and is writing and teaching a Sunday morning class on “50 Things a Christian Ought to Know.” As a younger priest, he has brought new energy and new ideas to the church while maintaining a sense of stability and connection with the traditional Episcopal Church. The Rev. Ram Lopez, Rector, St. George, San Antonio Qualifications – Ram has served on both the Executive Board and Standing Committee in the past. He brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership gained at the parish and diocesan levels.
