LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Insurance companies wanted Obamacare
I don’t think I can stomach another yay or nay letter about Obamacare. Robert Carlson, the reason Nancy Pelosi doesn’t know what is in the bill is because she did not write it. The “Best Healthcare System in the World” did. So, if you want to be mad about the taxes you will pay as a result, blame them. The Center for Public Integrity just came out with an article, “Pay No Attention to GOP Governors and House Leaders; Insurance Firms Need New Customers.” It claims the recent votes to repeal Obamacare are “all for show,” and “GOP leaders have no intention of repealing the Affordable Care Act because their friends in the health insurance industry are counting on major provisions of the law going forward, especially the expansion of Medicaid. “Don’t be fooled by Republican governors like Florida’s Rick Scott and Texas’ Rick Perry, who are saying they’ll opt out of the Medicaid expansion now that the Supreme Court says that’s allowable. When the feds start doling out billions in 2014 to bring an additional 16 million Americans into the Medicaid program, they’ll be on board. Trust me.” It goes on to say that the “best healthcare system in world” understands that business owners and private citizens can no longer afford crazy insurance premiums, so they ran to “big government” to get them to fill the void. And the money from that “void” will come from the upper Midwest, the northeast and the west coast (i.e. the states who create most of the wealth and pay most of the bills in this country.) If people are really passionate about this issue, then stop repeating talking points being fed to you by both sides; the truth is out there if you really want to see it. From the letters, it seems that most are only interested in shooting spit balls at the “other team.” It’s so sad. Erin Platt Aurora businesses that have hired local men and women and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Aurora and elsewhere are finding their futures and jobs threatened by these same “leaders.” It is time that we, the taxpayers and residents of Illinois, tell our elected officials in Springfield that we will no longer stand for their reckless spending. We can no longer stand by and watch as our taxes increase, unpaid bills pile up by the billions and pension promises go unfulfilled. Perhaps, if many of our incumbent state legislators who have voted for these reckless spending and tax programs are rejected by voters this November, the message will finally be received that we are serious about demanding a new direction in Illinois. We need jobs, not more taxes and gambling. We need promises made to our teachers and workers kept, not more cuts and false hope. And we need honesty when it comes to state spending and the programs it pays for — not more broken promises and a kind word from a politician who just needs our vote every two or four years. More jobs are needed, not taxes, gambling
I noticed with interest your article on the most recent gambling revenue numbers for the state of Illinois and the negative impact the newest casino has had on the income and, ultimately, the employees and owners of the surrounding casinos in Aurora, Elgin and Joliet. For far too long, this state, its governor and elected senators and representatives, have resorted to gambling in a futile attempt to try and balance an out of control state budget. Now, with a further expansion of gambling options, those
