Statistics on leaves in the Botanical Garden
The starting point is the following question: is there any precise, mathematical
relation between the length and the width of a leave? In order to discover the truth, you have to
pick one type of plant and answer these questions:
1. What is the name of the plant? ………………………………………..
2. What is its scientific name?.....................................................................
3. Take a photo of the leaves
symmetry?...............................................

Does

4. If it does, what type of symmetry? … ………. How many axis? …………
5. Does it bloom? ……………………………………
6. If yes, how many petals does the flower have?..............Is this a Fibonacci number?...........
7. Find as many data about the plant as you can and write them down:
………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………
8. Measure the length (l) and width (w) of ten different leaves of the same plant and
calculate the ratio l/w. Fill in the table below.
Leaves Length (l)
Width (w)
Ratio l/w

9. For the ratio values, calculate the mode, the median, the mean and the amplitude. Draw a
bar chart or a graph for the l/w ratio over the number of leaves.
