Impact report 2014

This, our eighth Impact Report, captures in summary what we have achieved
in 2014 and briefly sets out what we aim to do in the year ahead.
We have seen over the last 20 years how older people have changed: people are
healthier and more active than ever before. Living longer also presents many
issues that are not the same as those faced by previous generations. An
increasing number of people still need help and support during later life,
particularly to help them live for longer in their own homes – our role is to
provide services that support people’s needs today.
This is why, on 1st September 2014, we changed
our name from Age Concern Kingston upon
Thames to Staywell.

‘I find it reassuring to have
your organisation to
hand. You meet all my
needs and it is a good
feeling knowing
somebody is there for you.
I think the new name
Staywell is good. Shows
you will keep me well.’

There are several reasons for the change. The
name ‘Age Concern’ was developed over 40 years
ago to address the needs of a very different
generation, whose health needs and physical
capabilities deteriorated a lot earlier in life, where
life expectancy was poor. Attitudes towards age and ageing were very different
then; expectations were low compared to now. Today, there is not the same
‘concern’ over ageing, and this means that the name is not as relevant as it once
was. An increasing number of people over 65 simply do not identify with it.
The old name no longer describes everything we do. We provide a wider range
of services and work with a more diverse range of age groups than ever before.
Our role is to provide services that support people’s needs today. This new
name better reflects who we are and what people want. It’s what we do: we
help people stay well. We also want to continue representing the changing
needs and identity of older people.
With the same values, and 70 years’ experience, we will continue to provide the
same popular and award-winning services, in a modernising organisation. We
aim to expand what we do, over time widening our portfolio of services,
evolving and adapting our services to meet the community’s needs, and we
believe this new name will help us to do that.
