Insight Series: STEM Education
Surveys of traditional news media consistently demonstrate that reporting on science and technology makes up a small – and declining – share of coverage. Online sources for science news proliferates. Unfortunately, science journalism on the web can either be useful or very misleading.

NewsHour and STEM
NewsHour’s commitment to reporting on STEM in 2012:
• NewsHour used its dedicated science news desk, headed by Miles O’Brien, to produce 39 segments that captured the excitement and the challenges of innovation in STEM fields. The science desk posted more than 170 pieces to the Science & Technology page on NewsHour’s website.

NewsHour’s three goals:
1. 2. 3. Inform the public and policy makers with accurate science reporting. Engage audience with vivid descriptions of science and technology as vital parts of their lives. Stimulate interest in STEM fields among key constituencies, especially students.

Proposed “Insight” events
• MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, with underwriting support, proposes to extend the PBS NewsHour’s STEM coverage to a series of nationwide “Insight” events. • Utilizing NewsHour’s national presence and MLP’s professional production capabilities, the series will take attendees “inside” a NewsHour STEM story, engaging the audience and highlighting the relevance of STEM education to the national conversation.

Proposed components

(subject to change)

Over a 24 month period, we propose:
• Eight reported tape segments – shot on location, composed with NewsHour editorial sensibilities and designed to explain compelling advancements in STEM fields and STEM education. Tape segments could be featured on partner websites and integrated with event discussions. • Four moderated events – convened in four different communities nationwide, a discussion about STEM education led by a NewsHour correspondent in a format appropriate for the subject. Depending on the markets selected, MLP would look to collaborate with local public broadcasting stations to amplify its presence with community leaders. Additionally, MLP can utilize strategic content partnerships to reach specific audiences. Live-events would be staged to produce broadcast-quality video. If needed, MLP can create custom digital presences showcasing these productions.

Event concept
Engaging introduction

(subject to change)

For each event, we envision a combination similar to the following:

To set up the event discussions, each event would begin with a compelling presentation.

Teacher/Student town hall discussion
A NewsHour correspondent would pivot to a related discussion with students and teachers, discussing the event content and their experience with STEM education.

Thought leader discussion
Each event concludes with a moderated segment devoted to pulling out the significant points from the program and applying them to the national conversation on STEM.

Topics could include:
Inside the classroom – Report on innovations developed at nearby national scientific institutes and related industries

Outside the classroom – Introductory presentation from innovative student “Maker” who participated in the 2012 World Maker Faire
Policy – Discussion among community leaders about STEM education in Detroit, interspersed with stories from around the area highlighting STEM initiatives highlights how the motor city is investing in science education. Culture – A tape piece about portrayals of STEM in popular culture sets up an introductory discussion between screenwriters, stars, and producers about “nerds in Hollywood.”

Workforce – An interactive demonstration by former NASA engineers illustrates the dynamism of a well-educated STEM workforce; in a town hall, parents and students discuss STEM employment prospects; concluding discussion among a blue-ribbon panel of public sector and private industry leaders on the importance of STEM education for U.S. competitiveness.
Event topics and locations could be customized depending on news developments and the size and scope of the engagement. As with all of its productions, MLP retains editorial control over content.
