NEW YORK CITY:
Manhattan-based law firm that targets
Caribbean American clients is in a bitter legal dispute with its former personal injury attorney who was fired after he is
alleged to have poached crucial firm trade secrets and other confidential and proprietary information.
Spar & Bernstein PC (S&B) alleges that
attorney Adam S. Handler “engaged in an
elaborate scheme to intentionally misappropriate, for his own use and in the months preceding his termination, unlawfully copied S&B’s
comprehensive, proprietary inventory, audit
and analysis of personal injury cases and other
contact information as he was making preparation to open his own law practices.”

Protecting out children back home

A

nation without a secured future is heading for destruction and poverty. We all agree
that our children are one of the
most important human resources
towards a safe and sound future,
as well as sustainable prosperity
for any society.
As the crime situation continues to deteriorate in the
Caribbean especially in Jamaica,
the incidents of abduction, rape
and murders seem to have become the order of the day. Not
only have these monsters targeted
our women but incidents of attacks on our children have also
escalated.
Rosalee Gage-Grey of the
Child Development Agency in
Jamaica reports some 200 cases
of child abuse per week. In the
parish of Westmoreland alone,
500 active cases are being investigated, Gage-Grey told reporters
recently.
The abuse of our children
must never be condoned by any-

one or under any circumstance.
Far too many of our children are
being subjected to heartrending
violence and physical, sexual and
emotional abuse.
Especially sad is the fact that
many times these vicious crimes
are carried out by family members and other persons they trust
such as neighbors and teachers.
Worst of all, it would appear that
in many cases, the police and
leaders in the community are protecting these predators.
Reports coming out of Jamaica are that a significant number of these children are called
“barrel kids” as their parents or
guardians are living overseas, including New York City. Other
children, irresponsible adults or a
grandparent with limited resources, are raising the children
in most cases.
It appears to be a difficult quandary for both parents
and children.

[email protected]

These parents were forced to
migrate as jobs and other opportunities are limited in Jamaica.
These migrating parents also
face economic and immigration
challenges that prevent them
from making enough money to
adequately support their children,
as well as extend family members, back home.

At the same time, their children are left behind to confront
these monsters.
Without adequate food, shelter and parental guidance, our
children are being exposed to
physical, sexual and emotional
abuse from adults, especially
men.
While there several laws in
place to protect our children, Jamaica may need to amend the
laws to include harsher penalties
and longer prison terms for adults
who abuse children.
We are, however, suggesting
that the Jamaican government increase the age of consent to 18
years and restrict the sales of alcohol and cigarettes to adults
over 21.
If we are serious about the
future, we must protect our children.

People Are Talking...!
Understanding the Link Between
Entrepreneurship and Leadership

M

any entrepreneurs are leaders, and
many leaders are entrepreneurs. Teaching leadership in Saudi Arabia to female university students has its challenges, but it is
also rewarding. In leadership classes, I attempt to broaden their mindset about entrepreneurship.
The lessons are not limited to leadership,
but also to encouraging my students to think
about owning a business as an option. As an
educator and an experienced business owner,
I believe it is essential for individuals to create their own stream of income.
A business plan is incorporated in the
curriculum. Most of my students are usually
excited to create a plan to start a business, yet
they are unaware of the difficulties in running
a successful business. In a recent project,
they created a business plan for a niche market in Saudi Arabia.
I required that they completed a SWOT
analysis for their business idea. The students
were placed into groups of three to four students to create a team effort. A particular
team created the concept of a female transportation system they called Tigon (fast like
a tiger, strong like a lion).
In the Western world, you might think
that there is nothing unique about that idea.
However, women are not allowed to drive in
Saudi Arabia.
The template given students requires
them to create a vision, mission, goals, and
business philosophy. They should also have
a solid marketing plan. That would entail figuring out to whom they will market their
products.
No matter how good your product
and/or services, the business enterprise can-

Dr Neva
Alexander

not succeed without a good marketing plan.
It is risky to assume that you already know
about your intended market. Market research
is vital to make sure you’re on the right track.
The new and seasoned business owners
need to ask themselves the following questions:
1. What changes do you foresee in the industry over the short and long term?
2. How will your company be poised to take
advantage of them?
3. What factors will make the company succeed?
4. What do you think your major competitive
strengths will be?

5. What background experience, skills, and
strengths would you personally bring to this
new venture?
6. Where will you acquire the capital to start
your business? Your business will have many
start-up expenses. It is important to estimate
these expenses accurately and then plan
where you will get sufficient capital.
7. After you start your business, how will you
reinvest the capital obtained from sales?
This is a research project, and the more
thorough your research, the less likely that
you will omit important expenses or underestimate them. An operation plan is desired
when formulating your plan to start or continue an existing business. It explains the
daily operation of the business, its location,
equipment, people, processes, and surrounding environment.
In addition, the operation plan is essential as it produces outcomes while managing
restraints on time, money, and resources.

Protecting
Workers' Rights

NEWS

NYC:

he city is spreading the word
about workers' rights following a
report about health and safety issues
at nails salons.

Volunteers from the Department of
Consumer Affairs handed out flyers at
about 100 subway stations during the
Thursday morning rush.
They included information about
things like paid sick leave and minimum
wage.
"Our message is not not to go to nail
salons. Our message is to make sure that
workers' rights are being protected, that
their safety is being protected, that consumers know what kinds of rights and responsibility they have as well."
A recent report found that some nail
salon workers had been exposed to unsanitary and unsafe conditions.
Menin says volunteers will hand out
flyers at these and other businesses across
the city throughout the day.

DEA Makes
Record-Breaking
Heroin Bust

T

BRONX:

he Drug Enforcement Administration is celebrating a recordbreaking drug bust after nearly $50
million of heroin was seized in The
Bronx.

Authorities say they found over 150
pounds of heroin and $2 million in cash in
an apartment on West 251st Street in the
Fieldston section.
Police arrested two men, including
Jose Mercedes, who allegedly brought
drugs to New York from Mexico.
Officials say they're optimistic the
bust will make a major impact on heroin
distribution not just in the city but
throughout the northeast.
"The amount that he was bringing
into New York City—we believe at least
on a monthly basis and maybe every two
weeks—was just tremendous and there
cannot be that many Jose Mercedes in
New York City so this is going to make
hugea dent," said Special Prosecutor Bridget Brennan.
Investigators say Mercedes' organization transported heroin to Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Police also arrested Yenci Cruz Francisco with operating as a major trafficker.

Lawyer Accused of Stealing Clients Information

Continued from page 1
The complaint was filed Feb. 23 in the
US Court Southern District of New York.
Handler, who had been with firm since 2005,
was fired Jan. 21.
Handler strongly denies the allegations.
Reports reaching Street Hype are that a
fuming Brad Bernstein, president of P&B,
ordered that Handler immediately be escorted from the office as information reaching the company revealed Handler was in the
process of stealing the law firm’s client information.
A Jan. 30 email by David Lewis, who
had recently joined P&B as managing partner and general counsel, also accused Handler of sending a significant number of
confidential documents and client’s information outside the firm in direct violation of
firm’s policies. Handler was also accused of
breaching confidentiality agreement and the
client confidentiality provisions of the Rules
of Professional Conduct.
“In short, you have a significant number
of our client files and information in your
possession,” Lewis told Handler.
In responding to Lewis, Handler
strongly denied the allegations, insisting, “It
appears you have been given misinformation
which is creating this misunderstanding. I
don’t have any client flies in my possession.”
However, in a substitution of counsel
letter dated Feb. 3 to P&B and obtained by
Street Hype, Handler listed 17 clients from
his former employer that he was seeking to
represent at his new company, the Law Offices of Adam S. Handler.
Last Monday, a Manhattan federal judge
ordered the segregation of legal fees tied to
some 50 personal injury cases, worth an estimated $3.3 million and a further hearing
was set for Tuesday.
Steve Kaufman, managing partner of the
Kaufman & Company PLLC which represents P&B, told Street Hype that his client
was very pleased with the outcome of the
court hearing as Handler agreed to stop the
soliciting of Bernstein’s clients and return
confidential documents and clients information he took from his client. Aug. 10 has been
set as the trial date in a Manhattan federal
court.

Handler who is represented by attorney
Jim Scalise said, “It’s all about money. The
firm was facing financial hardship and was
replacing the more experienced lawyers for
younger and cheaper staff. I worked at Spar
& Bernstein for 10 years and during the period my dedication and commitment to the
company and clients have never being questioned,” Handler told Street Hype.

“I have a good working relationship
with all my clients and shortly after I was
fired they requested my services,” Handler
insisted.
Handler was recently employed as a
lead attorney in the Personal Injury, Medical
Malpractice and Wrongful Death department
of the law firm of Pollack, Pollack, Isaac &
DeCicco, LLP.

Men Charged
With Stealing
Nine Homes

A

BROOKLYN:
Nassau County man has been indicted
in connection with illegally transferring the titles of seven houses in Brooklyn
and two in Queens from their true owners to
himself or a corporation – then renting out
some of the properties and selling others. A
second man and the corporation are also
named in the indictment.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken
Thompson on Tuesday identified the defendants as Danny Noble, 45, of 719 Jay Way,
in Baldwin and Romelo Grey, 37, of 352
Randall Avenue, in Freeport.
They were arraigned before Brooklyn
Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun on an
indictment in which they are variously
charged with fourth-degree conspiracy, firstdegree criminal possession of stolen property, second-degree grand larceny, and
first-degree falsifying business records.
Noble was ordered held on $500,000
bond or $250,000 cash bail. He faces up to
25 years in prison if convicted. Grey was ordered held on $25,000 bond or $10,000 cash
bail. He faces up to four years in prison if
convicted.
Both were ordered to return to court on
August 5. The corporation, 69 Adelphi
Street, LLC, is also variously charged in the
indictment. It faces a fine of up to $10,000
if convicted.
According to the indictment, between
June 29, 2010 and March 31, 2015, the defendants falsely transferred title to seven
Brooklyn properties: 71 Carlton Avenue,
104 Vanderbilt Avenue, 45 North Oxford
Street and 70 Clermont Avenue, in Fort
Greene; 1391 East 95th Street in Canarsie;
357 Jefferson Avenue in BedfordStuyvesant; 729 Essex Street in East New
York and two properties in Queens: 94-05
108th Street in Jamaica and 187-05 Liberty
Avenue in Hollis.
Five of the properties were transferred
from the actual homeowners to Noble, according to the indictment, three were transferred to 69 Adelphi Street, LLC, and one to
a third party. The defendants allegedly targeted the properties because the owners did
not live in the houses and rarely visited
them.
Once the titles were transferred, according to the indictment, the defendants
carried out various scams in order to cash in
on them.

BROOKLYN:
arl Davis, 26, of a Brooklyn address and
owner of Edna’s Soul Food Restaurant
in Brownsville, Brooklyn has been sentenced to one year in jail for failing to pay
15 employees including cashiers, fry cooks,
servers, cleaners, delivery drivers and an assistant manager more than $17,000 in back
wages.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken
Thompson on May 6 announced that Davis
pleaded guilty to one count of attempted
scheme to defraud in the first-degree.
The District Attorney said that, from
October 2013 to July 2014, Davis employed
at least 15 people to work at Edna’s Soul
Food, a take-out and delivery restaurant located at 2258 Atlantic Avenue in
Brownsville, Brooklyn, using the corporate
identities Edna’s 1735 Pitkin Avenue LLC
d/b/a Edna’s Soul Food, ESF 2258 Atlantic
Avenue , LLC d/b/a Edna’s Soul Food, and
Edna’s Restaurant Group, Inc. d/b/a Edna’s
Soul Food a/k/a Lang Rock Equity Partners.
Davis served as the restaurant’s president and ran the day-to-day operations.

Earl Davis, 26,was sentenced to
one year in jail for failing to pay
his restaurant employees up to
$17,000 in back wages.

The District Attorney said that Davis
promised to pay the workers $8 to $10 an
hour to work as cashiers, fry cooks, servers,
cleaners, delivery drivers, and as an assistant
manager.
When the defendants did pay the workers the defendants paid them in cash without

pay stubs, gave the workers checks that
bounced, confiscated the workers’ tips, refused to pay overtime, and ultimately failed
to pay the workers all the wages owed to
them for up to two months of work.
The District Attorney said that Davis
told the workers he planned to open additional restaurants and that, if they continued
to work for him, he would reward them with
promotions and raises, as well as pay them
back wages.
The District Attorney further stated that
Davis was verbally abusive towards the
workers and regularly argued with, yelled at,
physically attacked, and fired workers who
asked for their wages.
Although the defendants refused to pay
the workers all the wages owed to them, the
workers saw defendant Davis take cash from
the register on almost a daily basis.

Banks Fined Over $5B For Market Rigging

F

our of the world's biggest banks agreed
last Wednesday to pay more than $5 billion in penalties and plead guilty to rigging
the currency markets — a rare instance in
which federal prosecutors have wrung an admission of criminal wrongdoing from a
major financial institution.
Traders at JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup,
Barclays and the Royal Bank of Scotland
were accused of working together to manipulate rates on the foreign exchange market,

where hundreds of billions of dollars and
euros change hands back and forth.
In the past 18 months, prosecutors have
brought criminal cases against banks accused
of tax evasion and sanctions violations, and
have reached multibillion-dollar settlements
with several others for their roles in the 2008
financial meltdown.
Prosecutors said traders shared customer orders through chat rooms and used
that information to profit at their clients' ex-

penses. The traders called themselves "The
Cartel," and in one of those chat rooms, a
Barclays employee wrote: "if you aint cheating, you aint trying," investigators said.
The banks will pay a combined $2.5 billion in criminal penalties for manipulation of
currency rates between 2007 and 2013. The
Federal Reserve is slapping them with an additional $1.6 billion in fines. Finally, Britain's
Barclays is paying an additional $1.3 billion
to British and U.S. regulators.

He faces 130 counts of Criminal Sale of

Members of the Christian-based group, Love March Movement, gathered at Emancipation

rights of lesbian, gays, bisexual, and transgender persons. Randy Berry was in Jamaica
on a three-day visit. In addition to 12 persons with placards, they had forty two thousand

Meanwhile, member states of the Human Rights Council continue their call for Jamaica

made the disclosure on Friday during his presentation to the Senate on the recent Human

Ex-Army General is
Guyana’s New President

GEORGE TOWN, GUYANA:
ormer army brigadier David Granger was
sworn in as Guyana's new president on
Saturday after his multiracial opposition

Granger's APNU+AFC coalition, a recent fusion between the traditional black

The veteran PPP politician has alleged
the elections were rigged, though diplomats

Ramotar's government was dogged by accusations of corruption and nepotism, putting a

St Kitts-Nevis PM calls for more
integrated regional approach

C

BASSETERRE, St Kitts:
hairman of the board of governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Dr Timothy Harris, prime minister of St Kitts and Nevis, has suggested that Caribbean countries
should take a fresh look at a more integrated approach to tackling the region’s development
challenges.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 45th annual meeting of the board of governors
of the CDB, he proposed what he called an integrated regional approach to the production and
distribution of alternative energy, be it blue or green energy.
“Wouldn’t it be a game changer if the Caribbean assumed leadership in alternative energy
export? That would have enormous implication for the cost of doing business and development
in the region? A leadership role here will do wonders for our competitiveness. Imagine a new
OECS space with St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and Grenada, leading in geothermal energy
for the sub-region, Puerto Rico, the French overseas territories and southern islands,” Harris
said.

Avoid immigration Scams

O

n November 20, 2014, the President announced a series of
executive actions to crack down on illegal immigration at
the border, prioritize deporting felons not families, and require
certain undocumented immigrants to pass a criminal background check and pay taxes in order to temporarily stay in the
U.S. without fear of deportation.
These initiatives have not yet been implemented, and
USCIS is not accepting any requests or applications at this time.
Beware of anyone who offers to help you submit an application
or a request for any of these actions before they are available.
You could become a victim of an immigration scam. Subscribe
to the USCIS Executive Actions on Immigration web page to
get updates when new information is posted.
If you need legal advice on immigration matters, make sure
that the person you rely on is authorized to give you legal advice. Only an attorney or an accredited representative working
for a Board of Immigration Appeals-recognized organization
can give you legal advice.

LEGAL AFFAIRS

MAY 1-18, 2015 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • 7

The Internet, newspapers, radio, community bulletin
boards and storefronts are filled with advertisements offering
immigration help. Not all of this information is from attorneys
and accredited representatives.
There is a lot of information that comes from organizations
and individuals who are not authorized to give you legal advice,
such as “notarios” and other unauthorized representatives. The
wrong help can hurt. Here is some important information that
can help you avoid common immigration scams.
Telephone Scams
Telephone ScamsDo not fall victim to telephone scammers posing as USCIS personnel or other government officials. In most
instances, scammers will:
• request personal information (Social Security number, Passport number, or A-number);
• identify false problems with your immigration record; and
ask for payment to correct the records.
If a scammer calls you, say “No, thank you” and hang up.

These phone calls are being made by immigration scammers attempting to take your money and your credit card information.
USCIS will not call you to ask for any form of payment over
the phone. Don’t give payment over the phone to anyone who
claims to be a USCIS official.
If you have been a victim of this telephone scam, please
report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

“Notario Publico”
Image of someone stamping a documentIn many Latin American countries, the term “notario publico” (for “notary public”)
stands for something very different than what it means in the
United States. In many Spanish-speaking nations, “notarios” are
powerful attorneys with special legal credentials. In the U.S.,
however, notary publics are people appointed by state governments to witness the signing of important documents and administer oaths. "Notarios publico,” are not authorized to provide
you with any legal services related to immigration.

Gatlin 'kicked out' of Beijing World Challenge

J

ustin Gatlin says he has been
"kicked out" of the Beijing
World Challenge by meeting organisers.
The 33-year-old, who has
served two doping bans, was due
to race in China on Wednesday
after running his fastest ever
100m time of 9.74 seconds in
Doha.
Gatlin was unsure about his
fitness following a flight to Beijing but appeared ready to compete after coming through a
training session on Monday.
"They didn't have any respect for me so they said 'you
better leave'," he said.
"I was happy to stay. I was
cramping a lot after the fastest
my body has ever run."
The meeting organisers
have yet to respond to the American's comments.

Justin Gatlin says he has been "kicked out" of
the Beijing World Challenge by meeting organisers.

Asked whether the sudden departure may have been linked to
his controversial reputation, the

sprinter's manager Renaldo Nehemiah said: "No, it has nothing
to do with that.

"No, this is because they
think he is injured and they don't
want him here if he's injured."
Gatlin's time of 9.74 from
Friday's Doha Diamond League
meeting is the fastest in the
world so far this year and jointsixth quickest 100m time in history.
"It's crazy. I have no idea
what they were thinking. I think
they thought I wasn't man
enough and I might pull up in the
race, or not finish it and then still
ask for money," added Gatlin.
"But I'm not a man like that.
I'm not the kind of guy to cheat
people of their money or let the
fans down ... that's not what I
do."

'No limits' for Serena in
her chase for greatness
B

est in the business – In recent years, Serena Williams has been the undisputed force
in women's tennis. The American has won an incredible 19 grand slam titles and is
looking to triumph at the French Open for a third time. But what is it that sets Serena apart
from her rivals?
Ahead of this year's French Open in Paris, CNN sat down with Patrick Mouratoglou
-- who began coaching Williams in 2012. Their trophy tally since teaming up includes a
Wimbledon title, an Olympic gold medal, three U.S. Open titles, a Roland Garros title
and an Australian crown, lifting her back up to the pinnacle of the women's game
Mouratoglou outlines the main reasons for her dominance of the game. First reason, I
would say, is the ability to win, which means she refuses to lose; says Mouratoglou of the
star who first turned pro 20 years ago. She’s an unbelievable competitor. Williams’ first
grand slam title came at the 1999 U.S. Open, where she defeated Martina Hingis in the
final.
Serena Williams is the world's No. 1 women's tennis.

New York Cosmos soccer match to
be telecast from Cuba on June 2

O

NE World Sports will produce and televise the historic June 2 soccer match between the New York Cosmos and the Cuba
National Team. The telecast begins at 5 pm
Eastern time live from Havana, Cuba with the
kickoff scheduled for 5:12 pm ET.
"As the broadcast home of the Cosmos -who remain the most iconic US pro soccer
brand worldwide -- and the network focused on
bringing global sports to American fans, ONE
World Sports is an ideal platform to showcase
this historic match," said Alexander "Sandy"
Brown, ONE World Sports president and CEO.
This is the first live sports production involving a US team to originate out of Cuba
since the 2008 US vs. Cuba FIFA World Cup
qualifier and it is also the first one to be produced in high definition.
In a first-of-its-kind arrangement, ONE
World Sports will partner with Havana-based
RTV Comercial for the mobile production facilities, logistics support, crew and transmission.
"When President Obama recently announced steps toward full diplomacy with
Cuba, his goal was 'to create more opportunities for the American and Cuban people and

begin a new chapter among the nations of the
Americas,'" said Joel Feld, ONE World Sports
executive vice president, programming and
production. "By televising this game and partnering with the great people from RTV Comercial and Televisión Cubana, ONE World
Sports will write the first chapter on sports."
JP Dellacamera and former Cosmos goalkeeper and current ONE World Sports commentator Shep Messing will call the game from
ONE World Sports' Stamford, CT, broadcast
center, with ONE World Sports announcer Ed
Cohen reporting live on-site from Havana.
As part of the production, the network is
also sending producers and technical crew to
cover the game and capture the sights and
sounds of Havana for the television network
and its digital platforms.
The Cosmos and the Cuba national team
first announced plans for the June event in
March. The Cosmos will be the first US professional soccer franchise to play in Cuba since
the Chicago Sting visited in 1978, and the first
US professional sports team to visit there since
the Baltimore Orioles played the Cuban national baseball team in an exhibition game in
Havana in 1999.

Sri Lanka women
cricketers 'forced
into sexual favours'

Members of Sri Lanka's women's cricket
team were forced to perform sexual
favours to keep their places in the team,
the sports ministry has said.
The ministry said evidence of sexual
harassment was uncovered in an investigation begun last year.
It was launched following reports a
player had been dropped for refusing to
have sex with cricketing officials.
Disciplinary procedures would now
be initiated, the ministry said, without
naming the individuals involved.
"It is a shameful incident," Sri
Lankan Children's Minister Rosy
Senanayake told the AFP news agency.
It is not clear what action will be
taken against the alleged offenders.

starting this Friday in Barbados.
Cameron said it was part of the
WICB’s plan to engage directly with the regional public on the issues facing the game
in the region.
The first town-hall meeting will take
place at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies, starting from 7

Plans are already underway to stage a
second public town-hall meeting just prior

hree generations of the women in the
Wright family all dream of leaving their
home in a small Jamaican town, but each
woman encounters obstacles and matters of
the heart that keep her from living the life she
wants. In varying ways, Somerset Grove explores inter-generational dissonance and its
ability to overwhelm the individual will.
Beginning in the winter of 1967, Somerset Grove by Dionne Peart is the story of Angelique, Ruby and Carmen. Traveling between
the tropical heat of Jamaica and the cold
promise of Canada Somerset Groove is an
emotional and honest look at falling in love at
a young age and how it can shape the narrative
of an entire family history.
Ruby, Angelique and Carmen - three generations of the Wright family play their roles
with ease and assurance - all locked stepped
in a psychological maze that deftly conceals
personal angst and self-loathing.
Angelique, strong willed and adventurous, chooses between her daughter and opportunity as she contemplates leaving Carmen
behind to move to Canada to pursue a career
and bigger life. After experiencing heartbreak,
proud matriarch Ruby is determined to see
that no one ever has a reason to look down on
her or her family, even if it means alienating
the ones she loves.
A young Carmen is torn between feelings
of resentment and longing, as she strives to be
independent while trying to build a relationship with her distant mother. At the right junctures, key questions are raised.
Will Angelique's love interest leave upon
hearing that she is married? Will Carmen finally see her father, Clifton, as she waits and
waits for his return? What secret is hidden inside the mansion that houses the influential
Chambers family?
The lives of Ruby, Angelique and Carmen mirror each other. They are intertwined
leaving little air for personal growth. Peart's
characters crave validation through the

y fellow Diasporians, I think the initial
election results in Guyana are holding
up, giving the APNU/AFC coalition party the
mandate to now form the new government, a
first in 22 years.
I am also to understand that the
PPP/Civic party that formed the government
these past 22 years, is not giving in without a
fight, citing massive voter irregularities and
fraud, countrywide, and sparking calls for recounts and even demanding the arrest of one
opposition candidate, who reportedly used his
social media account to post 'exit polls' results, favoring his opposition coalition party.
See, we are not the only ones who know
what it means to vote early and often..!
So, international observer missions aside,
Guyana might need some divine intervention,
there. Please keep them in your prayers.
And, speaking about prayer and divine
intervention, that is the route being taken by
the planners of the 6th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference. I can just hear you
going..conference, conference, AGAIN! So
what else is new?
Well, trying to understand who and what
drives the agenda, I now know that the homecoming is starting a day earlier, to accommodate what some are calling a powerful prayer
prelude, and are calling for a spiritual renewal.

It is interesting to note that since 2005, a
movement calling itself the Jamaica Diaspora
Day of Prayer and Fasting - JDOP - and headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, has been spearheading a prayer initiative to benefit the
island nation.
Conceptualized by a coalition of Jamaican clergymen in the fair city, the movement continues to reach out across states,
countries and continents, with messages of
hope and healing through a spiritual awakening.
I know there used to be a faith-based
sub-set of the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory
Board for the NE/USA, and that such a dynamic may still exist but the incongruence of
it all is what is baffling!
Mind you, a number of churches in the
USA, Canada and the UK, have joined the
prayer movement, citing the relevance now,
more than ever, of the high incidences of
crime and corruption that is eating away at the
moral fabric of the society.
The principals who continue to drive the
prayer agenda from their New York City base,
are most familiar with the Jamaican terrain
and so are undaunted by the challenges at this
time. And like true 'Men of the Cloth' - still
don't know what that means - know that there
is strength in numbers.
And so, what has largely been a secret
for the past 10 years, could be seeing the light
of day in Montego Bay through the participation of the JDOP.
Saturday (Adventists) and Sunday
(Protestants, Christians, etc. al), June 13 and
14, could change the way Jamaicans overseas,
see their island home, if even for four more
days. I did not say years!

Make it another blessed day, folks.
That's today's conversation. You have the
last word. Share your thoughts.

Final Expenses - The Costs and

T

here are two truths to talking about your
final wishes. The first is that talking about
your final wishes is admittedly dreadful, and
nobody wants to think about them. Unfortunately though, the second truth is that funerals
can be expensive and sometimes unexpected,
so not talking about it while you have the ability
can be costly to your family in the future.
The most recent statistics from the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA)
show that the average funeral costs around
$8,343.
The cost does not take into account cemetery, monument or marker costs, crematory fees
(if cremation is selected), or cash-advance
items, such as flowers and obituaries.
The following are some of the expenses to
be considered:
• The meaning of LIFE: Loan, Income Replacement, Final Expense and Education
• Casket: This will probably be the largest expense of the funeral.
• Embalming: This service isn't always required, but it’s necessary if there is going to be
a viewing or visitation.

• Memorial Service: This involves planning,
obtaining proper permits and copies of the
death certificate, preparing notices, holding the
remains and coordinating with the place where
you plan to hold the service, according to Funeral Planning 101.
• Grave site: The price of a plot in a cemetery
is a bit tricky to estimate because there are so
many variables. Many people choose to buy
their plots ahead of time to know they’ll be with
loved ones.

to treat spasms and also used to treat migraines.
However Botox is now being used
widely in cosmetic procedure to minimize the
look of crows feet and wrinkles and overall
beautification cosmetic procedures.
The procedure is still considered a medical procedure and must be supervised and or
administered by a board certified professional.
Botox common treatment areas: crow's
feet, forehead, and the lines in-between the
brows (glabella). Also marionette lines (the
lines around the mouth, upper vertical lip

Side effects to Botox treatment: allergic
reactions, rash, itching, headache, neck or
back pain, muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, nausea, diarrhea,
stomach pain, loss of appetite, weakness, injection site reactions; muscle weakness, bruising, bleeding, pain, redness, or swelling),

Dear Divine Diva:
y new boyfriend, "Morris," and I
seem to discover good qualities in
each other every time we get together. I
think he's wonderful. Recently, though, he
said he has noticed something about me
that he considers rude.
At the mall, I have always been irritated by sales people who practically block
your way to sample their product. I ignore
these pushy merchants because they usually won't take no for an answer, even if I
attempt to say, "No, thank you Morris
thinks I'm being impolite, so he's the one
who ends up being detained, trying to be
kind, while I wait for him to finish apologizing for not wanting their product.
I don't feel my way of handling this is
rude. I have told Morris he doesn't have to
please everyone.
-Not Rude In New York
Dear Not Rude:
I agree with your boyfriend that to ignore
someone is rude. However, rather than ignore these salespeople, a firm "Not interested" should be sufficient. And if the
person persists, keep walking

Girl with abusive home life
Should try to help herself

I

Dear Divine Diva:
'm dating a 16-year-old girl who was seriously physically abused in the past. She
and her mom had to move away for a
while, but have now been told by Department of Children and Family Services that
it's safe for them to move back with her father, who abused her.
After seeing what goes on in that
house and hearing her describe how they
treat her, I think the physical abuse has
changed to mental and emotional abuse.
I'm not sure what to do because I'm 18 and
its "illegal" that we are dating. It scares me
that they can use this against me. -What To
Do?

Dear What To Do:
You are not in a position to do anything
yourself. If you try to get help for your girlfriend, her parents could create problems
for you that would last a lifetime. However,
that doesn't mean you shouldn't encourage
the girl to help herself by talking to a counselor, a trusted teacher or a clergyperson
about the difficulties she's experiencing at
home. If she does, they are mandated by
law to report abuse. And this is a family
that's already been in the system.
-Always Divine Diva

Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease

ccording to the American Heart
Association, obesity is a major independent risk factor for heart disease.
Atherosclerosis is 10 times more
common in obese people compared to
people of normal weight.
According to the Nurses Health
Study involving 115,886 healthy
women, BMI was clearly related to
CVD. For women with a BMI = 29, the
relative risk of non-fatal MI and fatal
CAD was over 300% higher than for
women with BMI = 21.
It’s even worse for the morbidly
obese. For example, mortality due to
CVD is estimated to be almost 90%
higher in those with severe obesity.

Excess weight in childhood and
adolescence has been found to predict
being overweight in adults. Overweight
children, aged 10 to 14, with at least
one overweight or obese parent, were
reported to have a 79% likelihood of
being overweight as adults.
Pediatricians and childhood obesity
researchers are reporting more frequent
cases of obesity-related diseases such

reparing yourself for business networking events is
easier said than done. Many people completely misunderstand
the point of networking events
and have little idea why they are
attending them apart from hunting for business, or what they
should be doing in order to enhance their credibility at the
events.
• Working the room is exactly as
it sounds. Work the crowd,
whether individually or as
groups, and produce results
through finding good contacts
and opportunities. You do this by
spending your time interacting;
talking with people, listening to
people and answering any questions people may have about
your industry or your business.
• Likewise, ask them questions
about their business and their industry. Make the topic of conversation about them as this is

smarter and more strategic to
networking then talking about
yourself the entire conversation.
There are different reasons
why people attend business networking events. Some attend so
that they can meet specific peo-

ple. Others take part to meet people who are in the same industry
as they are, and some people attend to meet potential clients.
• However, remember that a networking event is not a hunting
ground and if you go in with the

attitude ‘let me sell my services
to see how much business I can
pick up’ then you won’t get very
far.
• There are also people who attend networking events not only
for business, but to identify with
other people and see where socialising will lead.
• Possibly to make new friends,
to see if there is a potential job
vacancy at other businesses or
the opposite, to recruit or headhunt brilliant candidates to join
your team.
• Whatever the reason for attending a networking event, you
must prepare yourself so that you
will produce the positive results
that you seek.
• Give yourself a few minutes to
tap into the right mindset. To do
this, focus on your goals. You are
going out there to connect with
new people. You want to leave
those new people with a good,

Mommy Takes
Drugs, Am I
To Blame?

U

nfortunately, too many children
today are facing the hardship of living with addictive parents. This challenging
environment
hinders
their
opportunities for a happy and successful
life. What makes this sad is that the children blame themselves.
This book will show it is not their
fault that mommy is sick.It will also explain that addiction is a sickness and not
a crime.
