TITLE  Developments in the Recruitment and Retaining Procedures of International Students in Cyprus

OBJECTIVES  International students encounter many difficulties while studying abroad. In Cyprus educational institutions have to be aware of these problems and the needs of international students so as to provide appropriate programs and services hence increase the institutions ability to recruit and retain them. This research question will be how to improve the recruiting and retaining procedures of IS in Cyprus? To do so, eight hypotheses were wer e developed: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

BACKGROUNDS  Student flows across borders are important part of internationalization. According to Reeve (2001, p.1) “... “...In Inte tern rnat atio iona nali lisat satio ion n is impo import rtan antt in or orde derr to to:: en ensu sure re fu furt rthe herr gr grow owth th,, development and reputation, meet rapidly increasing demand for international educat edu cation ion,, add value value to the educat education ional al experi experienc ences es of domest domestic ic studen students, ts,  produce graduates with global understanding, skill and imagination, enhance reputa rep utatio tion n for contem contempor porary ary relevan relevance ce and qu qualit ality y and foster foster intern internati ationa onall relationships and inter-cultural understandings…”

Considering that North America Australia and Europe are the hottest spots for study abroad. Being part of Europe, Cyprus holds an average number of IS from emerging countries. However, this number is declining significantly over the years for one main reason Cyprus is failing to satisfying the needs of those IS.

Students are not looking only for sun or enormous holidays, but the main aim of student is knowledge and experience and in order to achieve this students need many facilitations. This research will help, in one hand, institutions to understand IS needs and better target, recruit, and retain them. In the other hand, it will provide a guide line for IS students who wants to continue their studies in Cyprus.

METHODOLOGY   This research will be divided into two sections: the first section is the theoretical part which deals with the literature review in which secondary data will be gathered and analyzed. The second section will deal with the practical side of the research: in this section the research methodology will be a mixture between quantitative and qualitative approaches. The major advantage of this methodology is the opportunity for the research to tease out rich information from qualitative research combined with the objectivity and generalization stemming from quantitative research. Quantitative methods will be used by means of questioners to collect statistical data. The quantitative data collected from the questionnaire will be described and summarized by using descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution and cross Tabulation. Qualitative methods, as in-depth interviews, will be contacted with new IS in order to probe areas such as motivational and perceptional issues. Moreover, telephonic interviews will be contacted with those who already finished their studies in Cyprus to understand some benefits of study in Cyprus. Questioners will be send also to some IS to understand their needs and  perception of Cyprus before they come. Other statistical information will be collected from organizations such as Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture (CMEC) and Department of Higher and Tertiary Education (DAAE). In order to understand the facilities that Cyprus educational institutions are offering to non European international students, the research will focus on three universities: European University Cyprus, Frederic University, and University of Nicosia, and other two colleges: Americanos College and Philips College, those are chosen because they are considered as the main educational institutions for IS in Cyprus

PROGRESS MADE  Within Cyprus, they were only poor investigations to understand behaviour or needs. The most significant research is the survey contacted by Americanos College that presents important collection of information about International Students behaviour. Because of the important of the subject other countries like Canada USA or Australia are undertaking regularly this kind of research either by their ministry of education, educational institutions, or  simply students. TIME  FRAME  Due to the importance of summer session when the majority of new international students are coming, the research will be undertaken during the end of spring semester in order to analyse the perception and needs of international students before they come to Cyprus, and during the summer session to understand if their perception of Cyprus has changed and the factors affecting those changes. However, during this period its little bit difficult to contact with the old international students since most of them are having holidays.
