New Look for Ohio Right to Life Website
Features Interactive, Updated Design to Reach New Audiences
By Elyse Putnam Compassionate. Caring. Innovative. Knowledgeable. Cutting Edge. Are those the words you hear when you think of Ohio Right to Life? In years past our organization hasn’t always had the most success in conveying this image to the general public. Instead we’ve been called close-minded, old-fashioned, tablepounding fundamentalists. While these labels are far from the truth, some have unfortunately stuck around through the years - and it’s up to us to finally change them. One way we’ve sought to convey the truth about Ohio Right to Life is through our marketing materials. From the softer colors of our logo to our interactive presence on facebook, we’ve been hard at work trying to show Ohio who we truly are. However, much more work is left to be done. For years www.ohiolife.org has been your source for news on the pro-life movement in Ohio. We’ve always tried to provide you with timely and accurate updates on life issues for our state and have continually added great resources for you to share with others as you spread the message

Help Us Grow Ohio Right to Life
By Michael Gonidakis Help us reach more people by increasing our membership ORTL is the largest and longest serving pro-life organization in Ohio. In order for us to continue our life saving work, we are calling on each of you to help us “grow” our membership base. Together we have literally saved lives in Ohio by changing hearts, minds and the law. While the number of abortions in Ohio is thankfully at its lowest level, there were still nearly 30,000 abortions in our state last year! There is still so much to do - think of how much more we can do together? Membership Matters The foundation of our efforts and success is based upon our loyal members and the ability to increase membership. ORTL is purely a grassroots statewide organization and our ability to educate, protect and help young women and the unborn is rooted in our ability to call upon people in all 88 counties to help. ORTL members keep family, friends and neighbors informed on life issues and also motivate our elected officials to vote prolife. Without you, our efforts in Columbus are impossible. Our strength is directly related to you and the tens of thousands of pro-life Ohioans, who email, call and write their politicians to protect the unborn. Without you, we would not exist. We need your help You have the power to help us succeed. Most of the closest people in your life are probably not members of ORTL. Like you, I have so many pro-life friends who, if given information, would join our organization. KIE: A Great Online Pregnancy Resource
By Gillian Stechschulte Young women and men facing an unplanned pregnancy have very difficult decisions to make. Those decisions are even more difficult when access to factual information on the risks of abortion and positive alternatives is limited. In the past, Ohio Right to Life has had much success with the website, Knowledge is Empowering (KIE). Through the generous support of donors, ORTL has been able to maintain and advertise for the website. The website provides factual information about pregnancy options and allows visitors to submit their questions through a form which is responded to in a matter of hours. This feature allows us to direct men and women to “Option Line,” for

further counseling. The KIE website has hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. After many successful years, ORTL is happy to announce the newly redesigned version of this powerful tool. Check it out by visiting www.

knowledgeisempowering.com We also encourage ORTL members and friends to use this site as much as possible. One way that you can help us promote this site in your community is by downloading

Legislative News:

Kagan Confirmation Hearings and Partial-Birth Hypocrisy
By Mark Lally The confirmation process for Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court may have shed more light on the hypocrisy of the opposition to banning partial-birth abortion than on Kagan’s views on most judicial issues. As a payback to his pro-abortion supporters, Bill Clinton opposed efforts to ban partial-birth abortions in the 1990s. Because of the ghastly nature of the PBA procedure, he couldn’t fully embrace it; so he argued that it must be permitted when it was “necessary” to protect the woman’s life or health. As a White House aide, Kagan was a key part of the effort to defend this position as a justification for Clinton vetoing the PBA Ban Act. In a June 22, 1996 memo to her superiors, Kagan notes that after many months of refusing to speak to White House personnel about medical issues surrounding PBA, representatives of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) (which takes a pro-abortion position and opposed the bill) had met with her and other White House staffers. Kagan called the meeting “something of a revelation” and stated: “Suffice it to say that we went through every circumstance imaginable -- post- and previability, assuming malformed fetuses, assuming other medical conditions, etc., etc. -- and there just aren’t many where use of the partial-birth abortion is the least risky, let alone the “necessary,” approach. No one should worry about being able to drive a truck

through the President’s proposed exception; the real issue is whether anything at all can get through it.” Faced with the reality that Clinton’s objections to the bill were bogus and that ACOG had apparently avoided meeting with her because it knew the medical position for opposing the bill was weak, did Kagan or anyone

2010 November Election Preview
By Mark Lally The November 2nd General Election provides a challenge and an opportunity for the prolife movement. Ohio will elect a U.S. senator and its 5 statewide executive officeholders. Three of those officers – the governor, secretary of state, and auditor of state will serve on the apportionment board which will draw legislative districts for the next 10 years. All six of these races provide choices between pro-life and pro-abortion candidates. Two of the seven seats on the Ohio Supreme Court are also up for election. All 18 of Ohio Congressional seats are on the ballot. Many of these races provide choices between supporters of the new federal health care reform act and those who want to repeal and replace its pro-abortion provisions. Ohio will also elect one-half of the Ohio Senate and all 99 members of the Ohio House. Electing a pro-life majority in both of these houses, together with electing a pro-life governor who will sign pro-life legislation, will be crucial to adopting and maintaining pro-life policies in Ohio law. With so much at stake, prolifers need to become familiar with the candidates’ positions on life issues and let their prolife friends and family know what they found out. They should also encourage other pro-lifers to register before the October 4 deadline and remind them that absentee ballots can be used beginning September 28.

in the White House propose backing off their opposition? No. Instead they played games with the facts. When given a draft ACOG statement on PBA which stated that an ACOG panel “could identify no circumstances under which this procedure, as defined above, would be the only option to save the life or preserve the health of the woman,” Kagan stated draft statement would be a “disaster” and “suggested” adding: “An intact D+X, however, may be the best or most appropriate procedure in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health of a woman.” ACOG added Kagan’s language, which was quoted by both the federal district court and the Supreme Court in striking down Nebraska’s PBA ban. Thus, the key “scientific” reason for opposing a PBA ban was a purely political statement written by a White House aide.

By Elyse Putnam A few weeks ago, Ohio Right to Life began its youth outreach campaign to connect Generation Y to the pro-life movement. Generation Y is the term given to those ages 12-28 who are share common characteristics like being technologically savvy and having a need for attention and feedback. Generation Y is also gravely affected by abortion with this group making up the largest

percentage of those who seek abortions every year. At Ohio Right to Life, we’ve begun to bridge the gap in reaching Gen. Y by building a multimedia studio. We will use this studio to communicate our message to Gen. Y in new and interactive ways. Stay tuned for more updates on our studio and consider making a donation towards the studio fund to help us continue our efforts in reaching our youth today.

Reflecting on the NRLC Convention
By Elyse Putnam “We are Making a Difference,” was the theme of this year’s National Right to Life Convention, held in Pittsburgh, PA on June 24-26. Throughout the weekend I was constantly reminded of this theme as I learned of the great work being done to protect the unborn throughout the country by National Right to Life, its state affiliates and local chapters. Despite the effect the economy had on many state affiliates, all proudly reported about the progress they had made in their own states. In Ohio, we are especially blessed with dedicated supporters who speak not only through their words but also through their actions. I was pleased to share about the growing enthusiasm for the pro-life movement we’ve observed among Ohioans in recent months. Whether it is through your engagement on the issues through our social media, or your attendance at our special events, be assured, you have a huge part in making a difference with us. Thank you for all of your efforts which collectively have helped Ohio to become a standout state affiliate when it comes to defending and promoting a culture of life.
