From the President’s Desk
t sure seems like the first half of 2010 has flown by! One of the big events so far this year is the exciting new release of Microsoft Dynamics GP. Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 released in early May and we are already scheduling upgrades with many of our clients. I encourage you to visit with your account manager on the benefits of upgrading. If you are not a Managed Services client, now might be the time to look into it. The benefits include upgrade services, support, and unlimited training. In late April, many of you attended Convergence 2010. Summit Group held our sixth annual customer appreciation event during Convergence. We heard great feedback from attendees and look forward to the event next year. Mark your calendars for Convergence 2011. It will be back in Atlanta, GA the week of April 11, 2011. I want to welcome both Shawn Stewart and Nikki Lamb to the Summit Group Software team. Shawn will be doing Project Management and helping out our consulting team. reports instead of locking it up until the report has finished generating.
Platform Improvements – SQL Server and User Management

Report Library

Management Reporter uses SQL Server for data storage, where FRx used Microsoft Access for data storage. With Management Reporter, expect an increase in performance, stability, and multi-user capabilities. Management Reporter leverages Active Directory; after users are added to Management Reporter, any changes made to passwords and other settings are automatically rolled forward. There is no need to “manage” users in Management Reporter unless a user needs to be disabled or given a new security role. This also means that the only log-in screen users see is the company log-in screen for their Microsoft Dynamics GL.
Improved Multi-User Environment

The Report Library, with its ability to create folders and upload external files, can be used to group items. This creates a centralized location for report distribution and collaboration that places all of the information in one place. Also, by creating folders in the Report Library, reports can be found easily and put into folders that make sense to everyone in the organization. Security can be applied to these folders to make sure only those individuals who should have access to certain folders or items have access. In addition, any supporting documents to the financials can be added to the Report Library.
Report Viewer

Dimension Flexibility (Rows, Columns, and Trees) and Organization

Dimension flexibility allows for more flexibility when creating reports. The structured rules of regarding segments in FRx are no longer a limitation. By allowing larger and variable-length masks, Management Reporter scales better to larger customers. By creating folders, users can organize and easily find the building blocks they are looking for, which makes Management Reporter easier to use and increases productivity.
Formatting

A New Look to a Familiar Reporting Tool: Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 Welcomes

With the switch to IIS and SQL Server, there is no need to create shares for the SysData and IO_Data folders. All of the building blocks, company information, and generated reports are in a SQL database. Administrators can see all reports that are being generated at any given time because all processing is done on the server.

View report data using either a tree to navigate or the same drill through as with FRx. And Management Reporter doesn’t open a new view each time you drill; you can see where you are in the report and easily get back to summary information.
Undo

Adding logos/images to headers and footers, reports become even more customized. By allowing for page breaks to be specified in columns, control what data is displayed on what page. If the columns contain departments, specify which departments to be printed on each page by using the column page breaks. ith the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010, Microsoft highlights the first phase of its new Corporate Reporting Management (CPM) Business Intelligence solution—Management Reporter. Many of the features of the Management Reporter application come from the familiar and widely-used FRx Financial Reporter. The look and feel remains somewhat similar, but there are many changes that streamline the tool to make it easier to use and deploy on a system-wide basis. How does Management Reporter improve upon FRx? Management Reporter uses the same approach to report design that exists in FRx 6.7 and combines this with a robust architecture and an improved user interface that is familiar and more

consistent with other Microsoft applications. You’ll appreciate the performance, stability, and new features that Management Reporter delivers.
New Code Base and Architecture with 64-bit Support

Many companies are upgrading their systems to 64-bit and Management Reporter was built using 64-bit environments. This means that the IT department won’t need to maintain a separate machine just for Management Reporter as they may need to do for FRx.

The Strategy Successfully implementing CRM software (Microsoft Dynamics CRM or any other product) is more involved than simply installing new software. It is the realization that CRM is also a business strategy. Successful companies effectively leverage software to enable their business strategies. This may sound obvious, but far too often companies simply buy a piece of software and end up adapting their business to the limitations of the technology. Although this can benefit companies who give up inefficient processes to utilize standard best practices, it more often leads to sacrificing competitively differentiating capabilities. The Software Microsoft Dynamics CRM consolidates customer information and processes into one, holistic view of each customer. This enables customer-facing employees in sales, marketing and customer service to make quick, informed decisions on everything from cross-selling and up-selling opportunities to target marketing strategies and effective problem resolution. Microsoft Dynamics CRM enables you to do more with less, providing a central hub with instant access to the entire history of every customer or prospect - whether accessing through a mobile device, online, or in the office. It integrates with business tools you already use, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office, and accounting applications such as Microsoft Dynamics GP. Microsoft Dynamics CRM can be configured to meet the specific needs of your business and enables managers and executives to gain insight into the performance of the business through dashboards and reports. Microsoft Dynamics CRM sits on the .NET platform and because of that, it is much more than a traditional CRM product. Instead, a better way to think of Microsoft Dynamics CRM is as a rapid development application with out of the box CRM functionality, capable of instantly leveraging the .NET platform, and a vast array of Microsoft applications. The platform allows users to build business processes and custom functionality faster, with less risk and lower cost than a custom developed or purchased solution. Bringing Them Together Microsoft Dynamics CRM is a system that can be the heart of competitive advantage which today more than ever can make all the difference. In addition, the flexibility of Microsoft Dynamics CRM enables companies to leverage the out-of-the-box relationship-management capabilities to manage other types of “customer-like” relationships. The capabilities required to manage customer relationships are very similar to the capabilities required to manage other types of relationships. This allows the investment into your CRM solution to go far beyond traditional CRM usages. The CRM system can be used to manage other relationships such as vendor relationships. In addition, the system can be tied into systems such as Microsoft SharePoint Server to provide document management capabilities. The first step in assessing if Microsoft Dynamics CRM is right for your organization is to sit down with us to discuss some of your strategies and goals, then bring software into the discussion. Competitive Advantage
t is vital that companies are efficient and effective in their business strategy when they attempt to make an impact in the business world. Today’s competitive business landscape requires efficient and effective ways to market to, sell to, and service clients. CRM, or customer relationship management, consists of the business processes and software that enable collaboration, performance improvement, and better business visibility across all customer touch points. If customer relationships are an important asset to your business, then effective CRM strategies and software are vital. There are a number of considerations when looking at CRM solutions. First, is to understand the overall business strategy. What are the important business tasks that the solution will support and how will it support the business. Second, it is finding a solution that not only has robust out-of-the-box functionality, but is also flexible enough to adapt to changes down the road and can be easily integrated to other critical business applications. Bringing these two things together delivers a valuable solution with a solid return on investment.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM and SharePoint Integrations
By Matt Gronbeck — Microsoft Dynamics Consultant, Developer

Convergence 2010
By Josh Hoper and Erin Marr

ith the popularity of Microsoft Dynamics CRM booming, requests from customers wanting to leverage the Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server platform along with Microsoft Dynamics CRM to have one, single source for customer information are becoming more frequent. Companies have long been using Windows Sharepoint Services as a place to store documents, images, contracts and other information to be used by other members of the company, it is a natural fit to want to connect this company and customer data with the business critical data they maintain in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Surprisingly, there really were not many products or ‘patches’ available to accomplish this. With this in mind, we set out to create some sort of link between Microsoft Dynamics CRM and SharePoint, a link that would ease manual entry when entering customer info in two different systems. The solution settled upon was a plugin designed to create a Sharepoint Document Library whenever a record in Microsoft Dynamics CRM is created. It can be any Microsoft Dynamics CRM record type, but the initial idea was centered on accounts and providing the ability to see and share documents related to customers without exiting Microsoft Dynamics CRM or opening a new screen. Once the Microsoft Dynamics CRM record is created and an associated Document Library has been created, they are linked together by retaining the URL of the new Document Library on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM record and showing the page in an Iframe on the same form in its own tab. The result allows CRM users to open a record for a customer, click the SharePoint tab and see all of the documents associated with that customer. It also allows the user to upload new documents or download existing ones for printing, editing, or e-mailing. This plugin has been implemented for a number of customers who use it in varying capacities. There are customers with Document Libraries created on several events, including: Account Creation, Opportunity Creation, Contact Creation, and Service Activity Creation. These customizations are expected as companies figure out a way to take this basic premise of linking SharePoint Document Libraries to Microsoft Dynamics CRM data in a way that makes sense for their business. Contact your account manager today if you would like to learn more about Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft SharePoint. This integration plugin may be your solution. ▲

outhern hospitality was available in large doses at Microsoft Dynamics Convergence 2010 held April 25-28, 2010 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. The 8,500 attendees at this year’s event participated in Interactive Discussions, attended Keynote Addresses and General and Concurrent Sessions, explored new solutions from 240+ ISV Partners in the Expo, and attained hands-on experience in the Community and Learning Center. Attendees were able to relax and network at multiple receptions hosted by Microsoft and attend social events hosted by Microsoft Dynamics Partners. We hosted our own Customer Appreciation event at Agatha’s - A Taste of Mystery in downtown Atlanta. A comedymurder mystery interwoven into a fivecourse dinner was performed by the au-

dience and two professional actors. The dinner theater provided frequent and hearty laughter and great opportunity to relax and socialize with each other. Our team and customers were also able to take advantage of a wonderful volunteer opportunity while in Atlanta – Projects with Purpose and Atlanta Youth Project Summer Camp provided the chance for volunteers to lend some “elbow grease” to double the capacity of the camp. The camp (located a short drive outside the Atlanta metro) provides at-risk inner city Atlanta youth a free opportunity to receive coaching in various sports, interact with all sorts of animals from miniature horses to alpacas in the farm environment, and participate in archery, swimming, canoeing, fishing and nature scavenger hunts. Our contribution came

in the form of building cabins, a workshop, dining area, and storage building, and some landscaping work on the beach. Microsoft shared key product announcements during the conference, including the availability of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 (available now!), Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010, as well as some important changes to pricing with Microsoft Dynamics GP. Microsoft Dynamics CRM 5.0 is also slated to release later this calendar year –available first to CRM Online customers. It’s not too early to start thinking about Convergence 2011, which will be in the same venue in Atlanta the week of April 10, 2011. We expect another great event and would be delighted to talk with you about planning your organization’s participation! ▲

Making Microsoft Dynamics GP Work Simpler & Easier This past year we set out on a cross-country journey visiting Resellers and Customers on The Rockton Road Trip. We collected feedback, learned how our products are used, and took advantage of the opportunity to talk with clients on how to get more from their Rockton Solutions. In our search for the “next big thing” to develop for Microsoft Dynamics GP, we ran a contest and solicited product ideas from Microsoft Dynamics GP users. We were amazed at the quantity and quality of responses. No single idea resulted in one full product, but there were several suggestions that when rolled out together made for a great new product. Our development team poured their energy into creating this new product – Dynamics GP Toolbox. Dynamics GP Toolbox We proudly debuted the Dynamics GP Toolbox at Convergence 2010 in Atlanta, GA. Dynamics GP Toolbox combined some features from Rockton’s current product offerings, including: Auto logout features from Omni Tools, navigation assistance from Mentor, field finding from Inspector, and version compatibility from Version Pro. formats, and reports are hosted and stored securely. Increase productivity and effectiveness—Generate, view, and distribute reports in the centralized Report Library, which helps people get the information they need to quickly analyze data and make informed decisions. Transition easily—Use the Management Reporter Migration Wizard to quickly move report definitions from FRx 6.7 and maintain formatting. Customize existing reports—Use new customization features to modify migrated reports with the familiar, yet enhanced look and feel of FRx. Help protect financial data—Leverage the enhanced security of Management Reporter to help protect sensitive data and business information. Lower total cost of ownership (TCO)—Pricing and licensing costs for Management Reporter are designed to make upgrading from FRx 6.7 as easy as possible. Upgrading to Management Reporter positions companies to achieve an increasingly higher ROI as Microsoft adds functionality such as budgeting and forecasting in future releases. Talk to your Account Manager to understand your licensing situation and the next steps. Migration of FRx Data and Reports The Management Reporter Migration Wizard makes it quick and easy to migrate report definition data from FRx to Management Reporter with a simple step-by-step wizard. First

is the actual data migration, Rows, Columns, Trees, font styles, and lists of companies can be migrated. This is a migration and conversion process, because all FRx data is copied to the Management Reporter database where it is converted to the dimension-based system of Management Reporter. Next is the built-in validation process which can be run separately from the data migration. Validation evaluates each building block to ensure it meets all the necessary formatting requirements in Management Reporter. Validation helps: • Ensure proper formatting of reports. • Save time by validating before report generation. • Automatically prevent invalid formulas because it requires users to validate and save building blocks ongoing. Currently, the migration tools do not support the migration of .frd files (finished reports) or company setup, but you can configure companies directly in Management Reporter. Management Reporter will only interface with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010, so upgrade is required prior to switching to Management Reporter. (FRx will not work with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010). You should discuss with your Partner the timing of upgrading and any considerations specific to your use of FRx and Microsoft Dynamics GP. Be sure and check the Events Calendar for upcoming training classes on Management Reporter in your area. Contact your Account Manager today with any questions and to discuss the next steps to getting started with Management Reporter. ▲

t’s here! Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 has released and is ready for action! Here are the Top 10 Reasons to upgrade:

1 Microsoft Office Word Templates – There has probably been a need at some point in your organization to make a change to a report. This change could have been as small as adding a company logo to something as big as adding and removing fields. Up to this point, these changes required users to create a modified Report Writer report. These types of modifications can now be made with a simple and well-known utility, Microsoft Office Word, and printing to Microsoft Word can occur straight from Microsoft Dynamics GP! 2 Workflow Enhancements – A number of enhancements have been made to the Workflow system. First and foremost, there is no longer a

need to have a full Microsoft Office SharePoint Server implementation to run Workflow! You can now run Workflow on the free Microsoft SharePoint Foundation product. As well as making Workflow affordable, there are four new workflows available – Employee Onboarding, Vendor Approval, Employee Personnel Approval, and Electronic Signatures which allows you to bring the functionality of Electronic Signatures outside of Microsoft Dynamics GP. 3
E-mail Documents – Along with the abil-

ity to print documents and reports utilizing Microsoft Office Word, you now have the ability to create customized e-mail messages and send the reports to customers/vendors through e-mail! This can include invoices or other documents. 4 SQL Reporting Services Reports – Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 introduced the idea of SQL

Server Reporting Services (SRS) Reports. With the new release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010, there are a number of new out-of-the-box SRS reports that are available, including Key Performance Indicator reports that can be displayed through your Microsoft Dynamics GP Metrics page. 5 Management Reporter – FRx has been replaced with a new, stronger financial reporting engine called Management Reporter. Have you ever wanted to add logos or images to your financial reports? Worried about current FRx security? Want to install financial reporting on a 64-bit machine? Management Reporter is the answer to a lot of frustrations surrounding FRx for financial reporting! This new, SQL-based reporting platform gives you greater functionality for all of your financial reporting, and provides a migration path from FRx 6.7! 6 Drill Thru Reports – Building on SQL Server Reporting Services Reports, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 offers a new way to view data. A new feature known as Drill Thru Reports allows you to drill deeper into SRS Report data, and even offers the ability to drill directly into your Microsoft Dynamics GP windows! For example, view a report of sales data for the quarter, drill through to an individual customer and view sales data for that customer for the quarter, and drill through even further into Microsoft Dynamics GP and have it pull up the Customer Card with the customer information already pulled up! 7 Combining General Ledger Budgets – In many organizations, there is typically some sort of defined budget

process. Budgets are sent to departments, and then everything is combined into a single budget for the next year. Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 makes it easy to combine multiple budgets into one single budget. 8 Purchase Order Returns Enhancements – Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 adds PO Returns enhancements to give a few more options for returns processes. You now have the option to choose whether you want the returned items replaced by the vendor. Users will also have the option to determine how the invoice match will be handled. 9 Excel Report Pivot Tables – With Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010, organizations will now be able to capture the Pivot Table functionality in Microsoft Excel in addition to the standard Microsoft Excel Reports available today. 10 Benefit Self Service Confirmation Statements and Enrollment Summary Reports – There have been reporting modifications made to Benefit Self Service in Dynamics GP 2010. Employees can now see which processes have or have not been completed regarding a benefit enrollment with a number of new reports. Managers can also see and print which processes have or have not been completed regarding a benefit enrollment as well as summary metrics with totals for annual and employee enrollments. Be sure to check the Events Calendar for upcoming training classes on Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010. Talk with your Account Manager today about upgrade timing and next steps. ▲
