Super Junior (Korean: 슈퍼주니어; Japanese: スーパージュニア) is a South Korean boy band from formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2005. The group debuted with 12 members: Leeteuk (leader), Heechul, Han Geng, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon,Ryeowook, Kibum and later added a 13th member named Kyuhyun; they are one of the largest boy bands in the world. As of September 2011, eight members are currently active,[1] due to Han Geng's lawsuit with S.M. Entertainment which led to him leaving the group (now pursuing his own singing career in the Mandarin pop entertainment industry), Heechul and Kangin's temporary leave of absence for mandatory military service, Siwon's filming for his upcoming drama Poseidon (in which shooting of the drama are located at the farthest areas of South Korea, making him to temporary halt his activities with the group)[2] and Kibum's pursuit of an acting career.[3] However, the other members have insisted that the four (Heechul, Kangin, Kibum and Han Geng) are still part of the group, the group also mentioned that they are saddened by Han Geng's departure from the group.[4][5] Super Junior has released and contributed in 20 different kinds of records with varying degrees of success.
[6]

Over the years, they have been divided into smaller subgroups, simultaneously targeting different music

industries and audiences. Largely due to Super Junior's success as entertainers, other Korean entertainment managements began to train their music groups in other areas of entertainment, such as acting and hosting.
[6]

In addition to their commercial success, Super Junior has earned seven music awards from the Mnet Asian

Music Awards, eleven from the Golden Disk Awards, and is the second singing group to win Favorite Artist Korea at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards after jtL in 2003.[7]

[edit]History [edit]Pre-debut
In 2001, the company held their first overseas casting auditions and discovered Han Geng in Beijing, China, who was chosen from among three thousand applicants.[8] That same year, Yesung was discovered under Seoul's casting system. Sungmin and Donghae became trainees after jointly winning the first place in Best Outward Appearance in an S.M.-sponsored contest. In 2002, Heechul and Kangin were recruited along with Kibum, who was discovered in Los Angeles, California. Siwon was encountered in 2003 after being scouted at age 16 in front of his high school, and Ryeowook in 2004, in which the latter was discovered through the Chin Chin Youth Festival singing competition.[9] In 2005, Shindong was selected. The last member, Cho Kyuhyun, was then discovered after winning third place at the Chin Chin Singing Competition in 2005. Not long after boy band TVXQ's debut in 2003, news about Lee's unprecedented plans of forming another boy band quickly spread on the Internet. In early 2005, Lee confirmed the news and announced that an all-boy project group of twelve members would debut near the end of the year, promoting this singing group to be "The Gateway to Stardom of Asia."[10] Lee announced that that most members in this group were chosen because of their performing experiences as actors, MCs, models, and radio hosts prior debut. Heechul and Kibum were already established entertainers, and most of the other members had already made various kinds of appearances on television and media.[11][12][13] Highly inspired by the rotational concept of Japan's girl group Morning Musume, this group would also experience line-up changes, with new members replacing some selected members every year to keep the group constantly young and all-rounded. This concept was then newly introduced to the K-pop market.

For a while the group was rumored to be called O.V.E.R, the acronym for "Obey the Voice for Each Rhythm."[14]
[a]

However, before the group settled with their current name, S.M. simply referred to them as Junior, a

representation of the members' young ages when they first became S.M. trainees.[14] After the members' showcased their different talents to the company at a picnic, the company finalized their concept name to Super Junior. The group thereafter became officially Super Junior 05, the first generation of Super Junior.
[9]

Leeteuk said on Star Golden Bell that "at first, Super Junior's name was S.M. Junior, but after Lee Soo Man

saw our performance, he said we have super talent and quickly change our name to Super Junior".[citation needed] Super Junior 05 made their pre-debut on the Korean channel Mnet on September 11, 2005.[b] At the showcase, they performed various styles of hip-hop dancing, where they danced to B2K's "Take It to the Floor". Han Geng, Eunhyuk, and Donghae also performed a separate dance away from the group, dancing to Usher's "Caught Up." However, the performance did not air on television until May 16, 2006, as a segment in the Super Junior Show, the group's first television documentary.

[edit]2005–06:

The Super Junior project

Super Junior 05 debuted on SBS's music program Popular Song on November 6, 2005, performing their first single, "Twins (Knock Out)". A digital single with "Twins (Knock Out)", "You Are the One", and three additional tracks were released online on November 8. A physical CD single was scheduled to be released the following week but a more complete album, SuperJunior05 (Twins), was released on December 6, 2005, instead. Their debut album sold 28,536 copies in the first month of release and debuted at number three in the monthly chart of December 2005.[15][c] In that same month, they released "Show Me Your Love", a collaboration single with TVXQ. "Show Me Your Love" became the best-selling record of December 2005, selling 49,945 copies that month.[15] In February 2006, Super Junior 05 began performances for "Miracle", the second promotional single from their debut album. "Miracle" was the group's first single to top the online music charts of South Korea as well as the music charts of Thailand, drawing interest from international markets.[16] As promotions for "Miracle" came to an end, S.M. Entertainment began selecting new members for Super Junior's second line-up project, Super Junior 06. The company even prepared a list of chosen members that were to graduate from the group. However, no members were taken out and a thirteenth member was added instead in May 2006. The line-up project has been abandoned since then, and the group became known as just Super Junior, without the suffix "05".[17][18]

[edit]2006–07:

U, Don't Don and breakthrough success

On May 23, 2006, S.M. Entertainment revealed the thirteenth member Kyuhyun, who was discovered through a singing competition in 2005. They released their single "U" online for free download on May 25, 2006, on their official website. "U" had over 400,000 downloads within five hours of release and it ultimately exceeded 1.7 million downloads, crashing the server.[19][20] The physical single of "U" with a total of three tracks was released on June 6, 2006, eventually selling over 81,000 units.[21] The single became one of Korea's most popular songs

of the year, yielding number one spots for five consecutive weeks on two of Korea's top music programs.[22] By the end of the year, Super Junior collected over seven awards in five of South Korea's top music award ceremonies, winning the title as Best New Group of 2006. Super Junior's first sub-unit, the ballad-singing trio Super Junior-K.R.Y., debuted on November 5, 2006, with a performance of Hyena theme song "The One I Love" on KBS music program Music Bank.[23] A second sub-unit arrived in February 2007 called Super Junior-T. The trot-singing group released their first single "Rokuko" on February 23, 2007, and made a debut performance on Popular Songs two days later.[24] Super Junior's second official album was intended for a late 2006 release, but due to several accidental setbacks, Don't Don was not released until September 20, 2007.[25][26] Within the first three days of release, offline album sales for Don't Don passed the 11,000 unit mark, debuting as number one in all available offline charts. It finished the September monthly album sales as number one. 60,000 units were shipped by the first week of release and additional copies were printed.[27] Although Don't Don received rather bland reviews from critics, the album sold more than 160,000 copies by the end of the year, becoming the second best-selling record of 2007.[28][29][c] The album also found success in Taiwan; it broke the record for being the highest ranked Korean album on the G-music Combo Billboard Chart, surpassing the albums of TVXQ and Shinhwa. Super Junior's album also ranked above Taiwanese boy band K One, whose album debuted at number six.[30][31] Supported by the release of Don't Don, Super Junior was nominated in seven separate categories at the 2007 Mnet/KM Music Festival that was held on November 17, 2007. Super Junior won three of those categories including "Netizen Choice Award" and "Mobile Popularity", being the biggest winner of the night. The group also won "Best Artist of the Year" (Daesang), termed by many as the highest recognition of the ceremony.
[32]

Super Junior collected two more awards on December 14 at the 2007 Golden Disk Awards.[33] Although

defeated by SG Wannabe in winning the "Daesang", Super Junior won a "Bonsang" and the "TPL Anycall Popularity Award", which were reported as expected wins for the group by the media after the success of Don't Don.[33]

[edit]2008–09:

Beyond Korea and Sorry, Sorry

On October 2, 2007, S.M. Entertainment announced a third Super Junior sub-unit Super Junior-M, a subgroup designated for the Chinese market.[34][35] While the creation of the subgroup created a brief controversy between the fans and the management,[e] Super Junior-M became a success in China,[36] having the opportunity to have two sold-out concerts in Hong Kong,[37] top weekly ratings with their appearance on variety programs,[38] and becoming the idol group with the most endorsement contracts in China.[39] With the absence of almost half of the members in Korea, a fourth Super Junior sub-unit was created that same year to prevent Super Junior from disappearing in the Korean music industry. With five members from Super Junior-T and Yesung, they formed the subgroup,Super Junior-Happy. Super Junior-Happy released the extended play (EP) Cooking? Cooking! on June 5, 2008, and promotions ended on September 7, lasting for four months. In November 2008, Super

Junior-T returned, this time as a singing group in Japan, called SuperJunior-TxMoeyan; this group added Moeyan, a two-woman comedy group in Japan.[40] "ROCK&GO", a Japanese-language version of "Rokuko", debuted at number 19 on the Oricon Daily Charts[41] and ascended to number 2 three days later.[42] Super Junior's first major tour, Super Show, commenced on February 22, 2008, in Seoul.[43][44][45][f] The tour covered three countries and had shows on six different cities, including Bangkok,Shanghai, and Beijing.[35][44]
[46]

From July 8 to July 9, 2008, Super Junior held their first fan meeting in Japan, at the Nippon

Budokan in Tokyo, as a celebration for the grand opening of their official Japanese homepage, which was launched on April 1, 2008.[47] 12,000 tickets to the fan meeting were all sold out in several days. The group released a compiled Japan single the following day, entitled "U/Twins", which includes the Japanese version of "U" in the limited release, to complement the event. The single peaked at number four on Japan's Oricon Daily Chart in its first day of release, and dropped down four places in its second. The single broke a new record for being the first Korean single to have made within top 10 on Japan's Oricon Weekly Chart.[48] On August 2, 2008, Super Junior expanded their routes to Genting Highlands, Malaysia, being one of the top guest performers at the MTV Asia Awards 2008 along with other international performing artists such as OneRepublicand the Jabbawockeez.[7] They are the third SM artist to win Favorite Artist Korea at the MTV Asia Awards after Kangta of H.O.T and BoA, and the second musical group to win the award after JTL in 2008.
[7]

Super Junior's third album, Sorry, Sorry, was released on March 12, 2009, which was met with acclaimed reviews.[49] The title single of the album, "Sorry, Sorry" was digitally released on March 9, 2009.[50] In less than a week after pre-orders were announced, over 150,000 copies were pre-ordered.[51] Sorry, Sorry was their first album to debut at number one on the Hanteo Charts, and it sold over 29,000 copies the first day, defeating Seo Taiji's record of 25,000.[3] Promotions for the album started March 13 with the performance of "Sorry, Sorry" and "Why I Like You" on Music Bank.[52] Two weeks later, "Sorry, Sorry" became the number one song of the week on the same program.[53] During the group's performance on music program Popular Songs on March 15, ratings went up to as high as 14%, the highest in recent years.[54] From March to May, "Sorry, Sorry" collected a total of ten number-one awards with consecutive wins in Korea, having the single becoming a national and international success.[55][56] After only a month of release, the album became South Korea's best-selling album of 2009. Sorry, Sorry was also a critically and commercially successful hit in other Asian countries, opting the group to become the only overseas representative for the second time at Taiwan's annual Golden Melody Awards. "Sorry, Sorry" was also number one for a record-breaking 37 weeks in Taiwan. Sorry, Sorry was a best-selling Korean-language album in Taiwan,[57] Thailand, China, and the Philippines, in which the latter listed the album to be the first K-pop album to reach number one in music charts from the country.[58] Super Junior won three awards in the 1st Mnet Asian Music Awards - Overseas Viewers Award, Mobile Popularity Award and CGV Popularity Award despite not attending. Super Junior's Sorry, Sorry won Daesang at the 2009 Golden

Disk Awards. They held their second Asia Tour Super Show 2 start in Seoul on July 17, 2009, and ended in Manila, Philippines on April 10, 2010.

[edit]Artistry [edit]Musical

style

As a whole, Super Junior has released five studio albums and one physical single, including occasional contributions to drama soundtracks. They are acclaimed for their vocal harmonization and unison as each member contributes a different position range in their music. Some members are credited for their vocal belting techniques.[g][95] Super Junior works closely with Yoo Young-jin, who has produced and arranged most of the group's promotional singles since debut. Yoo's also known for creating the renowned SMP style, a genre that includes a balanced infusion of rock, R&B, and rap, with complementing musical elements such as the electric guitar, bass, and other different percussion instruments.[96] Super Junior has prominently used this SMP style in Don't Don.[97] Super Junior displayed a wide genre concept for each and every albums: they pursued bubblegum pop in SuperJunior05; ethereal and alternative rock in Don't Don; pop and contemporary R&B inSorry, Sorry and Bonamana; and electropop and synthpop in Mr. Simple. The group has also covered few songs in their albums. Their debut single "Twins (Knock Out)" is a cover of Triple Eight's "Knockout," which was released in 2003. While the musical style is mostly maintained as the original, "Twins (Knock Out)" touches closer to rap rock, with quicker rap and more emphasis on the bass. In most of their covers, the original titles are kept. Examples include Cape's "L.O.V.E" and Exile's "Believe." However, most of these covers are rearranged to different accompaniments, such asH.O.T's "Full of Happiness".

[edit]Dance

Style

Super Junior are known for doing performances that are heavily centered around their choreography, and are acclaimed for their highly synchronized dances. The group's pre-debut performance was a hip hop dance and they have also joined B-boy battles and performances throughout their career.[98] Their dance styles are widely termed as street dancing, with a majority of their choreography containing hip hop dance moves such as popping, waving, floating, and liquid dancing. Dances in the form of martial arts are widely used in their dance routines as Han Geng and Sungmin are professionally trained in that area.[99]

[100]

Shindong was the main choreographer for "U" and for a majority of the group's other dance sequences.

Eunhyuk choreographed the dance for "Boom, Boom" (Fourth Album) and also worked with the other members to create the dance choreography for "Don't Don" and "Marry U", both promotional singles for the group's second album. The dance for their hit single "Sorry, Sorry" was choreographed by Nick Bass and Trent Dickens, who has also worked with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. Nick Bass also choreographed the dance for "BONAMANA". The dance for "No Other" was choreographed by THE GEMINIZ, Rino Nakasone and Maryss From Paris. Super Junior M "Perfection" was choreographed by Misha Gabriel who had worked with other well known acts and choreographed Justin Timberlake's "Future Love Sex Show," Pussycat Dolls' "Doll Domination World Tour," "Dancing with the Stars" and more.

[edit]Popularity
On December 8, as the proponents of Hallyu Wave, idol group Super Junior was guested in CNN TV station’s 《Talk Asia》 program. Members Siwon and Leeteuk talked about the secret of their huge popularity and their strategy for advancing into the world music industry.[101][102] Super Junior is receiving attention worldwide. Recently they have extended beyond Asia, gaining popularity in Bulgaria, Slovenia, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and various other locations worldwide. In the year 2010, Peru’s Listas put up the top 30 rankings of The Sexiest Men in the World, whereby all of the members’ names appeared on the list[103] and a Slovenian newspaper also reported about their agency and album sales. Super Junior also appeared in a publication of a specialty magazine recently in Iran that contains a personal interview with all of the Super Junior members and their individual profiles, which is explained briefly in Persian.
[104]

According to the Korea Cultural Foundation, Super Junior is selected by Brazilian fans as the Korea best

group.[105] Earlier this year, in a survey conducted by Brazil’s Rede TV, Super Junior was chosen as the number one Korean singer who should come to Brazil. The results concluded with Super Junior being the top artist of choice with 30.9% of the vote.[106] They also won "Must-Follow Personality" at the Mashable Awards 2010 which was held in Las Vegas. Member Yesung was the winner of 2010 Cyworld Digital Music Award OST. Recently, Super Junior was chosen as the most popular Korean singers in a survey conducted by Mexico's TV Azteca, as well as the various Mexican communities of this band on the Internet. Also, England’s BBC acknowledged Super Junior as the icon noted for creating Hallyu effect.[107] Super Junior was picked number one in the survey, the Hallyu star that you want to travel Korea with. Super Junior received overwhelming votes from Asia including China, Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries as well as Europe such as France.[108]

[edit]Subgroups
Since debut, S.M. Entertainment has created four subgroups for Super Junior. Every member was put into different subgroups excluding Kibum, due to his busy acting schedule. The intentions of the subgroups were part of SM's strategy to not limit Super Junior's activities,[109] and the goal was to show that the group could accommodate different musical genres. However, this strategy was later challenged by critics, as it has

influenced an overwhelming amount of music groups to create official and unofficial subgroups alike.[110] SM announced that Super Junior will form more subgroups in the future, and possible focuses of these subgroups include a variety of genres such as electropop, rock and hip hop.[111] Previous Super Junior subgroups will also return to the industry along with appearances of new subgroups.[111]

Junior-K.R.Y.

Super Junior-K.R.Y., established in November 2006, is a trio formed by Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and Yesung whose initials make up the K.R.Y. in the title of the group. The company discovered that these three members developed a particular personal and subsequent fan-base that was separate from the rest of the group, and how they also had similar musical qualities. They therefore grouped these three members together to perform particular songs to target a more mature audience. Being amongst the most vocally powerful members of the group, Super Junior-K.R.Y. are credited to singing mournful, R&B-style ballads, a style that has proven very popular in recent years. Super Junior-K.R.Y.'s first official performance was on November 5, 2006 on KBS's Music Bank, performing "The One I Love (한 사람만을)."[112] They have participated in the original soundtrack of the tvN drama Hyena with a total of three tracks, including the main theme. The trio also contributed tracks in two additional original soundtracks, one track in both the soundtracks of Snow Flower andBilly Jean Look at Me. Unlike Super Junior's other sub-units, Super Junior-K.R.Y. has not officially released a single or album, and only participated in collaboration albums and original soundtracks. However, a new album is expected from KRY in the future.[111] On August 1, 2010, Super Junior’s sub-unit KRY. made history by opening their own concert for the first time in Japan, and upon the fans’ request for an encore, more performances were added inKobe on the 1st and 2 November and later on, 1 and 2 December in Fukuoka. There were about a total of 22,000 people who watched the 6 sessions of the performances. The group successfully finished their concert tour in Japan and Taiwan last year. Due to ardent requests from Korean fans wanting to see Super Junior-K.R.Y.’s concert, the group decided to also hold the concert in Korea.[113]

[edit]Hosting
The Super Junior members were one of the first Korean idols to begin television presenting and radio hosting. Heechul was the first in the group to be a selected MC for the music programs Popular Songs and Show Music Bank. He was also the first in the group to host radio shows, and cohosted Youngstreet Radio Show with ex-M.I.L.K. member Park Heebon in early 2005. Heechul has also been the MC for the Dream Concert since 2008. Leeteuk, Kangin, and Shindong made their MC debut on Mnet's music program M! Countdown five days after Super Junior's debut performance. In August 2006, both Leeteuk and Eunhyuk founded their own radio show, Super Junior Kiss the Radio,

which has become one of the more tuned-in radio channels in the country. The group also founded their own reality television program, and on November 11, 2007, the premiere of Explorers of the Human Body aired on SBS. The humorous show introduced the thirteen members as regular guests for the program, answering curious questions and doing demonstrations involving the human body.[116] The show has been the highest rating program of the reality line-up every Sunday, but due to Super Junior's tight schedule, the program ended quickly with thirteen episodes on February 3, 2008. The popularity of the program had inspired producers to create a second season, although no announcements of producing the next season has been announced.[117]

[edit]Acting [edit]Attack on the Pin-Up Boys
Main article: Attack on the Pin-Up Boys Twelve members, excluding Kyuhyun, appeared in the group's debut film Attack on the Pin-Up Boys. The first film released by SM Pictures, it premiered on July 26, 2007 in Korea.[118] "Wonder Boy", performed by Super Junior, is used as the theme song of the film.[118] Although the film was promoted as a typical high school comedy, the movie gained positive reviews from critics, praising that the movie had a well-oriented plot unlike most idol films. However, ticket sales remained low in the premiere month despite its unexpected success in the sales the first week.[119] The film was a box-office bomb, failing to attract more than 102,600 admissions and was proven to be a big loss for SM Pictures.
[120]

However, both versions of the film's DVD became a best-

selling record and were sold-out in both Korea and oversea markets, which was more than enough to make up for the production loss of 8.5 billion won.[120]

[edit]Other Films

Siwon was among the first of Super Junior to have participated in silver-screen productions, appearing in the Hong Kong historical action drama film, A Battle of Wits as the large supporting role of Prince Liang Shi in 2006. The cast promoted the movie throughout China with a short tour of four cities in November 2006. While the film received mixed reviews, Siwon garnered positive notices for his performance. He also received praises from co-star Andy Lau, stating that Siwon is a wonderful actor and that he "sets a good example for young Hong Kong idols." In 2007, Heechul, Kangin, and Shindong lent their voices to the three chipmunks in the Korean release of Alvin and the Chipmunks.[121] In 2008, Kangin had a major role in the Korean-language film, Hello Schoolgirl.[122]

[edit]Other

Media

On July 20, 2010, S.M. Entertainment, together with NEOWIZ Internet Corporation, Ltd, released an iPhone application which features Super Junior's 4th regular album, 'BONAMANA'. The lite app can be purchased for free, while the full app can be purchased for US$7.99 on iTunes.[127]

[edit]Influence

and impact

During the course of Super Junior's career, several pop groups were formed similarly extraordinary numbers of members. JYP Entertainment recruited thirteen boys to be in a boy band, who were all revealed in the show, Hot Blood Men. Of these thirteen, eleven were split into two groups that debuted at different times: 2AM, which has four members, and 2PM, which has seven.[128] Together, the two groups form the eleven-member boy band One Day. Ast'1, a boy band under DSP Entertainment, released a promotional video in March 2008. In the short preview the boy band expressed that they would "Knock Down Super Junior",
[129]

which resulted in a lot of criticism lashed into the group.

However, they clarified that they had no means to create conflict, and explained the reason why they want to defeat Super Junior is because they see Super Junior as their answer of success.[130]

[edit]Controversies [edit]Expansion

to China

For more details on this topic, see Super Junior-M.

After the subgroups Super Junior-K.R.Y. and Super Junior-T, on October 2, 2007, S.M. Entertainment announced the birth of another Super Junior sub-unit project that would begin activities in China starting 2008. Zhou Mi and S.M. Entertainment's new Chinese-Canadian trainee Henry Lau, who was also featured in the music video of "Don't Don", were also members of the subgroup.[131] The announcement brought in a huge wave of dissatisfaction and opposition from fans of Super Junior after the announcement of two new members. Initially, fans were planning to boycott the company's products, however, most fans agreed on a silent protest instead. Thousands of fans from Super Junior's official fanclub E.L.F. silently sat in front of the SM building and held signs that supported the group to have only thirteen members.[132] After more rumors regarding adding a Chinese member to the subgroup, the fans decided to gain a legal representation as part of S.M. Entertainment's stockholders. As of March 20, 2008, Super Junior fans purchased 58,206 stocks of S.M. Entertainment, holding 0.3% of the company's entire stock.[133] They released a statement that they will obtain all chances to prevent S.M. Entertainment from adding new members and to keep Super Junior as only thirteen.[133]

[edit]Conflict

with MBC

For more details on this topic, see Kangin. A time-slot dispute occurred between S.M. Entertainment and MBC when SM insisted to have Kangin stay on SBS's Explorers of the Human Body instead of MBC's Sunday Night Dong-An Club (동안클럽) where Kangin has been a regular host. MBC temporarily banned the rest of Super Junior from appearing in any future performances and shows hosted by MBC.[134] Kangin also lost his MC jobs to T.O.P. of Big Bang for the music show, Show! Music Core and also two more variety shows,

which both soon canceled after Kangin left due to low ratings.[135] MBC demanded an apology from S.M. Entertainment in order for Super Junior to appear on shows hosted by the channel again. However, MBC concluded that Super Junior's ban was never official, but just a decision for shows' producers to decide.[136]

[edit]Han

Geng's lawsuit

For more details on this topic, see Han Geng. On December 21, 2009, Han Geng filed for contract termination with S.M. Entertainment, label company of the group. The following day, Han Geng's lawyer stated the claimed reasons behind the action: provisions were in S.M. Entertainment's favour, unlawful 13-year contract length, unfair sum of money to end the contract, not allowed to request to revise his contract, forced to do things that were not in his contract, forced to do things against his will, fined if he disobeyed the company, missed any events or even was late, and there was uneven profit distribution. Along with this, it was disclosed that because of S.M. Entertainment's refusal to give him a day off in over two years, he had developed gastritis and kidney disease.[137] Han Geng's current manager, Sun Le, also submitted a statement to the court of South Korea citing S.M. Entertainment's violation of Han Geng's rights.[138] Sun Le's statement contended that: Han Geng was forced to wear a mask due to company's ill handling of the visa issue, company purposely discriminated against Han Geng and his family, company refused to cooperate or listen to any of Han Geng's suggestions, company purposely turned down individual activities for Han Geng (including Ariel Lin's "Fireflies" music video, which later starred Siwon and Donghae) and that the company treated Han Geng's potential endorsers poorly.[139]

On December 21, 2010, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Han Geng. The court stated, “All three contracts – from the January 2003 contract, the altered contract from February 2007, and the affiliated contract from December 2007 – do not exist.” A representative of S.M. Entertainment said that they will file an immediate appeal to reverse the decision.[140] and have yet to release official statements regarding his status.

[edit]Conflict

during Expo 2010

On May 26, 2010, organized by South Korea Pavilion of Expo 2010, many Korean pop stars including Super Junior were invited to the "South Korean classical and pop concert" which was planned to be launched at Expo Cultural Centre on May 30. As the tickets were not for sale to the public, visitors who want to enjoy the show could only exchange the ticket via expo ticket in the west door of the Expo Cultural Centre on May 30. The total ticket number is 5000, while 2500 of which would be assigned to Korea visitors for free which caused the actual available number to be 2500. Super Junior fans collected in the entry of the Expo Cultural Centre, and the strong emotion led to the occurrence of violence, resulting in casualties. A local armed police said that this is his first time to see such a “crazy” situation in Expo 2010 since the Expo park was opened.[141][142]

[edit]History
After achieving critically acclaimed success from their debut performance of the single "Twins (Knock Out)," which was performed on SBS's Popular Songson November 6, 2005 for the first time, the group was scheduled to release an official single of the song. However, a digital single of "Twins (Knock Out)" was released instead with three more brand new singles available for download on November 8, 2005. The full album, which included all of the singles in the "Twins (Knock Out)" digital release and several other new tracks, was released on December 5, 2005 in South Korea.

On February 12, 2006, Super Junior moved on to their second promotional single for the album "Miracle". The performance version of the single differs from the one released in the album, as the performance single has an added dance break and vocal bridge in the song. In contrast to the edgy, rock-influenced feel of "Twins (Knock Out)", "Miracle" was a light bubblegum pop love song with light-hearted dance choreography. It was the second and last song to be promoted from their studio album. Only twelve of the current thirteen members of Super Junior are featured in this album as Kyuhyun was not added to the group until six months after this album's release.

[edit]Overview
The album's first single, "Twins (Knock Out)" is a rap rock release. Dancing like eagles, the dance choreography arranged for the song became warmly welcomed and extremely popular. The follow-up single, "Miracle", is a typical K-pop bubblegum pop song, a genre still very welcomed by children and young adults. Like the song itself, the dance choreography for the single is also simpler and softer. The rest of the tracks in their first studio album, mainly consist of pop love ballads and also R&B-influenced dance tracks with rap and fast drum beats. The main themes involved in the album are about situations that are related to love or trust. Soothing ballads like "You are the one" and "So I" intends a positive environment in one's love relationship. Fast tracks with lighthearted melodies like "Miracle" and "Way for love" contains bubblegum pop lyrics with positive views of love and trust. However, fast, rap-influenced dance tracks like "Twins (Knock Out)", "Over", "L.O.V.E", etc. usually gives in negative connotations about love and relationships. For example, in "Over", the lyrics hovers around a confident persistence after a relationship breakup. "L.O.V.E" involves around a loss of hope and confidence after love is shattered. Likewise, Super Junior's debut track "Twins (Knock Out)" speaks of self-deception and the indecisive aspects of mind, contrasting the feelings between a man towards love and how he has to decide whether or not he should continue to love or fight with sticking to his own destiny. "Keep in Touch" and "Believe" are cover songs of the Japanese band, EXILE.

[edit]Reception
As soon as the album was released, the album stayed at #1 throughout the whole week on Korea's Hanteo Weekly Chart. Although SuperJunior05 (Twins) was a commercial success after the much anticipated debut of the group in November, the album failed to reach the top spot in the MIAK K-pop Monthly Charts. Instead it debuted as #3, selling 28,536 copies. However, the single Super Junior collaborated with TVXQ that same month debuted as #1, selling 49,945 copies.

SuperJunior05 (Twins) stayed in the charts throughout 2006, selling an extra 26,510 copies. It sold 10,408 more copies in 2007 and sold 86,659 copies by mid-2008. It remains as within the top 60 best-selling albums from 2005 to 2008. When it was released in Taiwan on February 16, 2006, it debuted in the G-music J-pop Weekly Album Charts as #16.

and recording

When promotions for Super Junior's previous hit single, "U" completed, SM Entertainment announced that the group were processing on the beginning touches for their second full-length album, with an expected November 2006 release. However, due to Heechul's car accident on August 10, 2006, schedules regarding album recordings had to be postponed. Another car accident inflicted upon four other members on April 19, 2007 also affected the album schedules. Kyuhyun, the most injured out of the four, was not discharged from the hospital until July 5, 2007. During a fan-meet in Shanghai on August 26, 2007, Han Geng revealed that recording schedules for the album were finally active and the album would be released in September,[6] followed up by Shindong's announcement that he would be on a short hiatus from hosting activities to work on the album, and an official announcement of the re-appearance of Kyuhyun in news articles.[7] On September 5, 2007, Kang-in revealed his new hairstyle at a public radio, causing an intense anticipation within the media for the group's second album comeback.[8] Their new album concept became a hot topic of debate within netizens as more information of the new concept unraveled. A few days later, SM Entertainment released the album's first promotional image, which contains a silhouette of the thirteen members. The mysterious image increased discussion for the anticipated new album concept, but the new concept was not fully revealed until the release date of the album. However, leaked pictures of the group's new image lightly surfaced across the web a week before the official release date. On September 13, 2007, the label announced an official date for the album release. Demonstrative ringtones of the tracks in the album was released online on September 19, 2007. The official album was released on September 20, 2007.[9] Pre-orders for the album began in South Korea on September 14, 2007.[10] "돈 돈! (Don't Don)", also the name of the album, was chosen to be the first single. Transliterated to "Money, Money! (Don't Don)", the title is a pun, playing with the words "don," (Korean: 돈), which means money, and "donda" (Korean: 돈다), which means to go insane. "Don't Don" is introduced as a genre of SMP (SM Music Performance), a genre invented by the company, that consists of the strong mix of R&B, rock, rap, and hip hop. The musical style of "Don't Don" has the combination of heavy guitar riffs, fast drum rhythms, electric guitar, a violin solo, and other musical instruments that make the single a rare musical. In an effort to promote the world to become a more innocent and magnanimous place to live, the lyrics sends a message about how money, hypocrisy, and the change of society has made the world into a twisted and greedy place to live.

[11]

"Marry U" was chosen to be the second single. Different from the fast-pace first single, "Marry U" is a

medium-tempo R&B ballad, reviving a classic image which is a contrast of their dark image from their first single. The rest of the album consists of soft ballads, string section focus, retro R&B, and 80's style trendy dance songs,[12] a style that is completely different from their first album, which a majority of the music consisted of modernized R&B dance pop. However, the trend of bubblegum pop still remains in the album, such as the second track, "Sapphire Blue." Many members contributed in the production of the album. Yesung, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun were active as background vocalists while Eunhyuk, one of the main rappers of the group, was in charge of most of the rap lyrics in the album. Leeteuk, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, and Donghae also wrote the lyrics for the dance/pop song, "I am," arranged by Yoon Jongshin.[9] Famous musicians like Yoon Jongshin, Kim Johan, Kim Youngho, Hwang Sungjae, Kim Changhyun, etc. also participated in the production of the album.

[edit]Repackaged

versions

Two repackaged versions of the album were released a month after the release of the album. The album's second version, the CD repackaged version, was released on November 5, 2007 with four new tracks: "Marry U" (New Ver.), "A Man In Love", "The girl is mine", and "A Man In Love" (Remix). Although the song "Marry U", was included in the original album, the CD repackaged version brought in a new version of the single, which became the album's second single. The remixed version of "A Man In Love" became a semi promo-single for the repackaged album and is one of the group's performance songs. The third album version, the CD+DVD repackaged version, was released on November 9, 2007. Although there are no new tracks added to the CD unlike the second version, an extra DVD is added to the album which contains music videos and behind-thescene clips behind the production of the album.

[edit]Album

packaging and image

The packaging and image of Don't Don is darker than that of their first album. Don't Don came to stores with thirteen different covers, each cover featuring a different member. All thirteen covers of the members are included within the CD package, and the covers can be changed anytime. First impressions of the album were critical but well-accepted, as Super Junior transformed into a much edgier image than from their previous image in "U." The members sported bleached hair and had astounding hairstyles, which were influences from the combination of punk fashion and hip hop fashion.[13]Some of the members also imprinted large temporary tattoos on their skin, which surrounded the arms, back, and stomach. With the release of the album's second version, the group quickly transformed to a classical image to complement the second single, "Marry U". Hairstyles were slightly modified and their hair color were darker. The album's third version revived the group with a modern and fashionable boy band image.

[edit]Critical

reception and promotion

Don't Don debuted at #1 on the MIAK K-pop albums chart, quickly selling more than Lee Soo Young's and Wheesung's new albums that were released at least two weeks before Don't Don. The album sold 66,678 copies in its first month of release.[14] After only three months of release, 164,058 copies were sold by the end of December, making it the second best-selling album of 2007.[3] The album also received overseas success, as it peaked at #1 on the Five Music J-pop/K-pop Chart and the Gmusic J-pop Chart in Taiwan within the first week of release.[15][16] The album also debuted at #3 on the G-music Combo Billboard Chart, defeating Taiwanese boy band K One who also released their album on the same week.[17] Don't Don became the highest ranked Korean album that made it to the Taiwan charts, defeating even the top Korean wave boy bands TVXQ and Shinhwa who debuted at a lower rank.[18][19] Super Junior's first performance for Don't Don was on September 21, 2007, performing the first single "Don't Don" on KBS's Music Bank. It was their first performance in which the group performed together as thirteen after a whole year, arousing attention.[20] Promotions for "Don't Don" lasted almost three months and aside Music Bank, Super Junior also performed on other music programs, such as on SBS's Popular Songs and M.NET's M! Countdown. Not long after the release of the second single, "Marry U", Super Junior became co-hosts of a new SBS variety program, Explorers of the Human Body along with Shin Dongyup. The new program acclaimed critical praise in its first season, and always ranked as SBS's most-viewed program every Sunday. However, the first season quickly ended with thirteen episodes in February 2008 due to Super Junior's busy schedule with their first concert tour, Super Show. However, SBS is in talks to create a second season.[21]

Aside South Korea, Don't Don was re-released in other countries under different labels. Don't Don was released in Taiwan on October 19, 2007 and later in Hong Kong on October 25, 2007 under Avex, with the album title changed to The Second Hit (simplified Chinese: 第二击; traditional Chinese: 第二擊; pinyin: dìèrjī).[26] Both the second and third repackaged versions of the album were released in Taiwan on December 7, 2007. The second version was renamed to The Second Hit - New retro B version and the third version was renamed to The Second Hit - New modern C version.[27] The album was distributed to Mainland China in early March 2008, which was renamed to Never Give Up (simplified Chinese: 绝不放弃; traditional Chinese: 絕不放棄; pinyin: juébúfàngqì). Although the album's first version was distributed to Japan in early May 2008 under Rhythm Zone, a new Japanese edition of the album, including all of the second version's tracks and an extra Japanese-language version of "Marry U", was redistributed on February 25, 2009.[28] In the Philippines, the CD+DVD version (version 3) was released on May 14, 2010.[29]

and production

Following their commercially successful 2007 album Don't Don,--In July 2008, Super Junior announced the initial preparations for Sorry, Sorry.[7] In November 2008, Kyuhyun wrote in his fancafe stating that he was preparing for the third album "bit by bit".[8] During a press conference in January 2009 for a Super Show encore concert in Seoul, Kang-in stated that the album will be in a style that will make the audience see a different side of Super Junior.[9] He further commented that while their second album Don't Dondid well in 2007, activities promoting the album were lacking due to the activities of different subgroups. Therefore, there will be a concentrated effort to increase promotional activities in order to make Sorry, Sorry more successful.[10] On March 2, SM announced the official release date to be on March 12, 2009.[2] An image teaser of the album was released on March 4, 2009[11] and a video teaser of the album was released on March 6.[12] "Sorry, Sorry" was released as a digital single through various Korean MP3 sites on March 9.[12] The album's second promotional single "It's You" was revealed on May 11, 2009. After only five hours of release, the single became the #1 song on Cyworld's Music Charts.[13] A repackaged version of Sorry, Sorry, with four new bonus tracks which included "It's You", was released on May 14, 2009.[14]

[edit]Music

Sorry, Sorry contains primarily pop music, with the album having a more mature approach in style in comparison to previous Super Junior albums. It contains more R&B-styled pop songs with lyrics that represent the evolution of "boys to men."[15] Songs are less cheerful; melodic instruments play a huge part in most of the songs, showing maturity. Rap is also less presented in this album, having a majority of the songs dominated by R&B and harmonious vocals. Super Junior explained that this album is more strongly affiliated with Super Junior's own musical style unlike their previous albums, in which their music had been test-productions for various markets.[16] The album shows its strong influence from contemporary dance and R&B. It draws from bubblegum pop to a lesser degree, unlike their previous albums. The title song "Sorry, Sorry" was written by Youngjin Yoo, who was also responsible for the title single of Super Junior's 2007 album. This track is inspired by American funk – with vocals and a strong electronic beat, a new style that the group has never tried before. Nick Bass, who has worked with international stars like Usher and Justin Timberlake, choreographed the dance for "Sorry, Sorry" with assistant staff Trent Dickens, showing the single's strong musical prominence.[17] The second promotional single "It's You" was written by E-Tribe, famous for creating hits such as "Gee" and Lee Hyori's "U-Go-Girl".[14] "It's You" similarly draws influences from electronic beats; however, it keeps a heavier emphasis on contemporary R&B. TVXQ members U-Know and Micky wrote the rap and performed it in "Heartquake" and actress Lee Yeonhee's vocals are also featured in "Club No.1."[18]

[edit]Promotion

and reception

The year prior to the album's release was seen as a hiatus year for Super Junior, although sub-unit groups Super Junior-M and Super Junior-Happy had been promoting in both China and Korea for most of 2008. Although members of the group were popular on various Korean variety shows,[16] they were falling behind musically, and the group felt that they should be judged on their musical merits before anything else.
[16]

Through this album, Super Junior hoped that it would give the group a stronger musical impression in the

media, confirming a style that is strictly Super Junior's own style of music.[16] As soon as "Sorry, Sorry" was released via MP3 websites, it topped every music chart, confirming the single's popularity. Super Junior explained that "Sorry, Sorry" was not chosen because of popularity, but because they see the song as their own style.[16] Super Junior's first comeback performance was on March 13 with the performance of "Sorry, Sorry" and "Why I Like You" on KBS's Music Bank.[19] That following weekend, they performed the same two songs on MBC's Show! Music Core and SBS's Popular Songs, and have been performing "Sorry, Sorry" on the same three programs every weekend until July 2009. "Sorry, Sorry" achieved its first recognition as the #1 song of KBS's Music Bank monthly pop chart on March 27 after only two weeks in the charts.[20] The single won again for the April pop chart,[21] and was the #1 song in its weekly pop chart for the first two weeks of May.[22] In addition to other recognitions, the song won the Mutizen Song award on Popular Songs for three consecutive

weeks (Triple Crown)[23] and it also became a song of the week on Mnet's M! Countdown on April 9 and April 23, although Super Junior was not present at the program to receive their awards.[24] "It's You", however, only received two recognitions during its promotional period. Outside of Korea, Sorry, Sorry was heavily promoted in other Asian communities. Fifty-one subway trains in Taipei were covered with Sorry, Sorryadvertisements from April 17 through May 7 to promote the Taiwan release of Sorry, Sorry, which was released on April 17. Amongst one of the trains was the "Super Junior Train", in which the train was entirely covered with Super Junior posters.[25] Taiwan also released an exclusive CD and DVD version of the album on August 14. Sorry, Sorry and its eponymous single was a huge hit in Taiwan, topping all available album and singles chart in the country. It debuted at #2 in Taiwan G-music's Combo chart, #1 in the International chart[26] and #1 in Five Music's Korean chart.[27] On May 1, Super Junior performed "Sorry, Sorry" and "Why I Like You" for the first time overseas in Beijing, China for Jackie Chan's Bird's Nestconcert,[28] simultaneously promoting the Mainland China version of the album's release. Starting June 1, Mnet's sister channel in Japan aired Super Junior documentaries and live performances weekly for seven months.[29] Sorry, Sorry also peaked at #1 on Thailand's international pop charts within two weeks after its release.[30] The album topped Thailand's Channel V Asian Chart for eight consecutive weeks, setting a new record for the chart.[31] Released in the Philippines on September 4, the album topped album charts of Music One that same weekend, outselling albums by Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.[4] It became the first #1 K-pop in the country, entering the Odyssey album chart one week after its release, and stayed in the charts for over ten consecutive weeks and eventually reached Gold status three months after its release in the country, selling 7,500 units.[32] Both "Sorry, Sorry" and "It's You" became Arirang's Best 10 K-pop songs as #1 and #6 respectively. Shortly after Super Junior began their promotions on "It's You", the group began preparing for their second Asia-wide tour in the summer of 2009. The tour was officially announced on June 3, 2009, almost three months after the release of Sorry, Sorry. The tour included songs from their previous albums and kicked off with three shows in Seoul, South Korea from July 17 to 19.[33]

[edit]Sales

and impact

In just days, 150,000 copies of Sorry, Sorry were pre-ordered.[5] The album debuted at #1 on the Hanteo Daily Charts, with approximately 30,000 copies sold, making it the biggest opening day for the group.[6] By the end of the week, 36,000 copies have been sold through Hanteo, debuting at #2 on the Hanteo Weekly charts, selling only 4,000 copies less than Seo Taiji's single, which was released on March 10.[34] Sorry, Sorry debuted at #2 on Hottracks Gayo Best 5 on the second week of March and jumped to #1 on the third week.[35] As of May 15, 2009, over 215,000 units have been sold, being the first Korean-language album to do so in 2009.[36]

Sorry, Sorry and both of its singles topped all of Taiwan's yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily Korean charts, thus becoming the best-selling Korean-language and international album in the country.[3]Its long stay as #1 in Thailand's music charts broke records, and was also certified as a best-selling album. Super Junior was awarded with 'Best Selling Album' at the South Korea's Gaon's 2009 Top 100 albums chart. SM Entertainment announced on December 12, 2009 that the album sold 250,683 copies.[37] Surprisingly, the album made an appearance on the 99th rank of South Korea's Gaon's 2010 Top 100 albums chart, selling 14,581 copies.[38] The album currently sold a total of 265,264 copies by February 2011.

and production

The group first announced that they were working on their fourth full-length studio album in January 2010 while presenting an award at Thailand's KPN Awards. A week after, Kibum, who participated very little in the group's last studio album Sorry, Sorry due to acting pursuits, discussed the possibility of participating in the production of Bonamana during an interview.[5] After a thorough discussion with producers, Kibum decided to continue his acting career instead. With Kang-in fulfilling his two-year mandatory military service and Han Geng's lawsuit against SM Entertainment, only ten members were able to work on the album.[6] Shindong tweeted about preparing for the fourth album in early April.[7] On April 19, SM Entertainment formally announced through online media outlets about the release and production of the album. After Super Junior finished their Super Show 2 Asia concert tour in the Philippines, the members postponed solo activities to fit more time on working in the album in time for a mid-May release.[8] On May 6, SM announced the album release date to be on May 13, 2010.[9] Like most of Super Junior's past lead singles, the first single off of Bonamana is also self-titled.[10] [edit]Music Super Junior consistently described the main concept style of Bonamana to be "mature" and "sophisticated". Following the music genre that they settled for in Sorry, Sorry, the music in Bonamana is largely mainstream and is composed of a variety of genres including R&B ballads, pop dances, and hip hop.[11] However, unlike Sorry, Sorry, a majority of Bonamana maintains a handful of cheerful, mediumtempo pop songs that Super Junior had been known for performing since debut. The album starts off with "Bonamana", an upbeat electropop song. SM described that "Bonamana" is the "completion of the SJ Funky genre", a genre that Super Junior will pursue continuously since its development in Sorry, Sorry. Eunhyuk created the dance choreography for "Boom Boom," hip hop dance

track characterized for its "dark and powerful groove."[12] Super Junior invites Park Chang-hyun a fourth time to write the soft vocal ballad "Coagulation", performed by Super Junior-K.R.Y. Similar to "Coagulation" is "One Fine Spring Day", a solo song by Ryeowook. The fourth track, "Your Eyes" is described as a "regular Super Junior R&B ballad", with emphasized characterization on the differences between Yesung's and Kyuhyun's voices. Surprisingly, on the seventh track "Shake It Up," Han Geng who was currently in a lawsuit with SM Entertainment, did not have his vocals scratched out on the track. It was revealed later by the representative of SM Entertainment that this song was recorded before Han Geng filed the lawsuit. The album ends with the cheerful electropop song "Here We Go" that will "[refresh] the listeners' hearings."[13] For the repackaged album, Bonamana Version C, there are four new songs. The first one, "No Other," received great feedback, so it was followed up with a music video released on July 7, 2010. The next song, "All My Heart" is written by Leeteuk and Henry Lau. The other Super Junior member, Eunhyuk andDonghae also wrote and compose the song "A Short Journey" as a tribute for fellow member Kangin who currently serving in the military. This song is performed mainly by Kangin, accompanied by Donghae, Yesung, Kyuhyun, and Ryeowook. [edit]Promotion

and release

A week before the album was released, over 200,000 copies were pre-ordered.[1] According to South Korea's Hanteo chart, version A of Bonamana debuted at #1 on the charts, selling 36,000 copies on the first day of release.[2] After four more days of release, over 70,000 copies were sold.[14] Bonamanacharted at #1 again on real time and daily charts after the release of version B, selling over 13,000 copies, totaling the offline sales to over 100,000.[3] Super Junior's first comeback performance was on May 14 with the performance of "Boom Boom" and "Bonamana" on KBS2TV's Music Bank,.[15] The group performed again with the roster the following weekend on MBC's Show! Music Core on May 15[16] and on SBS's The Music Trend on May 16. On February 2011, according to the South Korean album chart Gaon's 2010 year-end summation chart, the album's A and B versions sold a cumulative total of 200,193 copies, awarding the album as the "best selling album of 2010". Meanwhile, the repackaged album sold 99,355 copies, ranking at the ninth spot in the Gaon Top 100 albums chart for 2010,[4] bringing to a total of almost 300,000 units sold in South Korea alone. [edit]Singles "Bonamana" was confirmed to be the title single of the album on May 6, 2010.[10] The music video teaser, unveiled on May 7, revealed an extremely brief and blurred preview of the song's chorus.[9]"Bonamana" was released for digital download on May 10.[10] Naming the genre as "SJ Funky" (Super Junior Funky),

"Bonamana" consists of "African rhythms, with catchy grooves and club house beats." The song is widely defined to be in a electropop funk style, and a majority of the song is concentrated on autotuned vocals.[11] [edit]Track

Background and development
On March 31, 2011, leader Leeteuk announced during the interview, "At the earliest, we’ll be coming out with our fifth album this summer."[7] Leeteuk andYesung confirmed on their radio show "Super Junior Kiss the Radio" on June 1, 2011 that they had begun recording their upcoming album that day.Heechul tweeted on June 2, 2011 saying that the group "may be going crazy with preparations for our fifth album, but when it’s finally released, you’re all going to go mad.[8] American dancer Kenny Wormald posted on his official twitter on July 11, 2011 that he had started the choreography rehearsal for the group's upcoming new single.[9][10] On the same day, Leeteuk and Eunhyuk revealed on their radio show "Super Junior Kiss the Radio" that songwriter Jinu (hitchhiker) had contributed something for the new album. Shim Jae Won, current choreographer and former member of the disbanded SM group Black Beat tweeted a picture showing cups with Super Junior's names written on them.,[11] providing possible formation for the song's choreography, as well as two pictures of the choreography practice of the group the next day showing only the lower half of their bodies.[12] A teaser photo was released on July 20, 2011, with the first photo featuring Eunhyuk. Other photos followed, in order: Donghae, Leeteuk, Shindong, Kyuhyun, Sungmin, Ryeowook, Yesung, Siwon and Heechul.[13][14] On the same day, it was announced that the album is set for an August 3 release.[15][16] On July 22, 2011, the group began filming the music video for their new lead single.[17] The filming for the music video wrapped up July 24, 2011, with Shim Jaewon consistently updating the group's filming activity. On July 25, Jeon Hoon of Sonic Korea Studio announced that he is mastering the new album. Two video teasers were released on August 1, 2011, in which the first teaser gained a million views on YouTube a day after its release, the second teaser passing a million views by the second day. The first teaser, by the end of the second day, had surpassed 2,500,000 views. The digital single was released on the 2nd as well as the whole digital album format through various Korean online music sites like Melon, Dosirak and Bugs, where it became an instant digital chart-topper in South Korea in just an hour of release.[18] That day it was also made available worldwide on iTunes, where it charted at #28. The physical format of the album was released on August 3. The group will also have a press conference regarding the new album on August 4 at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Seoul, and the music video itself will be revealed the same day on the conference. The music video reaching more than half a million views within the first few hours of release, and comment numbers increasing by about 200 per minute. The music video passed 1.5 million views by the end of the first day, and 3 million by the end of the second, views and comments steadily growing all over the world.[19]

Music
The album is mostly synthpop, with the title track, "Mr. Simple", being the last installation of the "SJ Funky" genre in which the group has been consistently pursuing since "Sorry, Sorry" (2009) and "Bonamana" (2010).

Songs encompassed with synthpop elements include "Opera", "Be My Girl", "Walkin'" and "My Love My Kiss My Heart". Other tracks included in the album are the country-flavored tracks "Good Friends" and "Sunflower", an electropop number "Feels Good", a cover of a 1996 song by Jinu (hitchhiker) entitled "White Christmas", ballads "Storm" and "Memories", aDonghae-Chance-written track "Y", as well as the inclusion of subgroup Super Junior-M's Korean version of their 2011 title track "Perfection", in which it serves a purpose "to give a chance to Korean fans to enjoy the music of Super Junior-M which is appearing in various stages in Asia." Meanwhile, for the B-version of the album, a further-included track "Superman" is described to be "a minimalist hip-hop track which feature the members singing in a low vocal range."[20]

Promotion
The group first held a press conference at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Seoul regarding the album and declared that this will be the group's current last studio release due to planned enlistment of group leader Leeteuk, as well as member Heechul in the army sometime in 2012.[21] The group expressed that they will promote the album as long as possible since Leeteuk will be enlisting to the army and that they are in plans of a world tour.

Leeteuk added that after his discharge from the army, they will go on to release an album afterwards. Super Junior had their debut performance of "Mr. Simple" and a non-album track called "Superman" at

Music Bank on August 5, 2011,[24] followed by Music Core on the 6th,[25] Inkigayo on the 7th[26] and M! Countdown on the 11th.[27] However, promotions for the song will end on August 28 due to the enlistment of member Heechul to the army on September 1, 2011.[28][29] On August 26, 2011, a music video for the album's supporting single, "Superman", was revealed via SM Entertainment's SMTOWN YouTube page, in which the music video shows various clips from their Super Show 3 tours as well as the photoshoots and music video making for "Mr. Simple".[30]

Sales and chart performance
The album debuted at the number one spot in the Hanteo Charts, selling 79,152 copies in its first week of release. Aside from this, the album also topped the Japanese Tower Records' online album orders chart.[31]
[32]

The album's tracks, especially the title track, managed to occupy the top ten spots in various Korean online

charts like Dosirak, Bugs and Melon, as well as the physical album itself topping the real-time charts in Hanteo, Hottracks and Yes24.[33] The album is due for release in eleven Asian countries.[34] The album also debuted 3rd on Billboard World Albums Chart.[35] The album managed to sell a hundred thousand copies after two weeks of release, and further bringing these to a total of 130,000 copies in total of the album's initial version.[36] By the end of August 2011, the album sold a total of 287,427 copies according to Gaon charts.[37] Meanwhile, the repackaged album, "A-Cha", which was released on September 19th, debuted at #1 in Hanteo real-time albums chart hours after its release.

Debut, Now or Never, and Voice

In mid-June 2009, CN Blue began to perform on the streets and in live clubs in Japan.[1] As an indie band, they formally debuted on August 19, 2009 with Now or Never. The mini album was recorded completely in English, and failed to chart on the Japanese national music chart. Later, in November, the second extended play was released entitled Voice. Voice peaked at position 227, and stayed on the Oricon for two weeks, and was recorded mostly in English but also in Japanese. Also that year former Bassist Kwon Kwang Jin left CN Blue in late September after the release of CN Blue's first mini album. Kwang Jin was replaced by Lee Jungshin later that year.

[edit]2010:

Korean debut, ThankU, and other activities

In January, FNC Music unveiled new teaser pictures for CN Blue's debut in South Korea. Bluetory was released on January 14, 2010. It stayed at the top of the Gaon Chart for two weeks. "I'm a Loner" (Korean: 외 톨이야) was promoted as the title track. The song peaked at number two, solidifying their break into the industry. The group had their first televised live stage on KBS Music Bank on January 15. Later, on January 29, the group won their first music show chart win on Music Bank. The group debuted their new reality show on Korean music channel Mnet, titled "CN Bluetory," on February 10. In March, the band started preparations for their first full length album ThankU. It was released on March 20, 2010, with only one new track. The album peaked at number 90 on the Oricon charts, their highest thus far. Later, in April, their official fanclub name was announced as BOICE, a combination of "blue" and "voice." CN Blue headed back to Korea in May and released their next promotional single, "Love Light" (Korean: 사랑 빛), on May 10, 2010. The song peaked at number 10 on the Korean national chart and foreshadowed their upcoming release. On May 19, the second extended play was released, named Bluelove. It was promoted with the track "Love," which charted at number 2, matching the success the band found earlier with "I'm a Loner." Bluelove peaked at number 3, but stayed on the chart for many weeks. CN Blue held their comeback stage on M!Countdown the following day. After success in Korea, the band headed back to Japan. They released their first single "The Way" on June 23. For the first time, they charted within the Oricon top 40 at number 26. The release was followed by "I Don't Know Why" on September 16 the same year. The song reached number eight on the Oricon daily chart, marking the first time the band made it inside the top 10. On the weekly chart, they peaked at number 15. On the Japanese indie top chart, the band reached number one.[2] The band embarked on a small tour across Japan in order to promote the single.[3] CN Blue members Kang Min Hyuk and Lee Jong Hyun will star in the Korean movie "Acoustic." They released a song from the OST on October 7 entitled "High Fly" that peaked at number 98 on the Gaon Chart.[4]

[edit]2011:

Re-maintenance and First Step

On January 9, they released their 3rd Japanese single, Re-maintenance. They started off their 2011 Japanese promotions with a Zepp Tour in 4 cities: Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Tokyo from January 9–16.[5] FNC Music, their entertainment agency in South Korea, released teasers for a CN Blue comeback for February in 2011.[6] However, it was later changed to a March 21 release date.[7] The teaser was noted for having a "more of the same departure from their pop rock sound into a heavier concept."[8]

They are managed by JYP Entertainment. The current members are Junsu, Junho, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung and Chansung. 2PM is one of the two subgroups branched out from the eleven-member (before Jaebeom's departure) boy band One Day, the other being 2AM. They debuted with the song "10 Jeom Manjeome 10 Jeom" (10 점 만점에 10 점, lit. 10 Points Out of 10 Points), which showcased their acrobatic dance styles.[2] They achieved their first No. 1 song with "Again & Again".

History
Pre-Debut

The members of 2PM all auditioned (except Nichkhun, who was scouted[3]) to become part of JYP Entertainment, to which the Wonder Girls & 2AM also belong. Some members held their auditions in other countries; for example, Park Jaebeom auditioned in the United States. Other members already had experience in the entertainment industry prior to their acceptance into JYP Entertainment, such as Kim Junsu, who had won various singing competitions, and Ok Taecyeon, Lee Junho and Hwang Chansung, who had participated in the show 'SuperStar Survival'. 2PM's and 2AM's training days were filmed in a documentary called Hot Blood Men, which aired on Mnet. The show documented the time by time training program of the JYP trainees who were to be part of the group "One Day", as well as the elimination of three trainees from the group during the time.

2008: Debut and early success
Unlike other Korean record labels, their record label JYP Entertainment opted to promote them with a more mature than "pretty-boy" (in Korean ggotminam) image.[4] 2PM debuted with their single "10 Jeom Manjeome 10 Jeom" (10 점 만점에 10 점, lit. 10 Points Out Of 10 Points) on September 4, 2008. On October 17, 2008, they began promotion of "Only You", another song from their debut mini album "Hottest Time of the Day." On April 16, 2009, the group released their second mini album 2:00PM Time For Change, which they began promoting on April 23. On May 9, 2009, they won their first Mutizen Song award onM!Countdown since their debut; in the same week, they won their second Mutizen on SBS Inkigayo. The group earned their third Mutizen the following week, completing the triple crown and making them ineligible to win for the following weeks. However, the award that had been eluding them - Music Bank - was quickly won soon after. On June 11, 2PM began promotions for "Niga Mipda" (니가 밉다, lit. I Hate You) on M!Countdown. On July 2 and 3, 2PM achieved first place on the M!Countdown and Music Bank charts for the song "Niga Mipda". They achieved the triple crown for the song onM!Countdown by July 16. On July 30, 2PM won the 'Only One Song' award on M!Countdown.

2009: Controversy and rise to prominence
On September 4, 2009, articles surfaced on the internet regarding Jaebeom's posts from 2005 on his personal Myspace account, in which he expressed his dislike for Korea while still a trainee for JYP Entertainment. Jaebeom issued an apology regarding this matter.[5] Although outraged protesters demanded that Jaebeom should be forced out of 2PM, JYP Entertainment CEO Park Jin-young stated on September 7 that he was going to continue to remain part of the group.[6] The following day, Jaebeom announced on his official fancafe that he would be leaving the group and returning to the United States, with plans of going back to school and bettering his understanding of music, and also apologized to the other 2PM members for not being a good leader and older brother to the group.[7] Park Jin-young has confirmed that he will respect the

singer's decision, and that 2PM will continue on as a 6-member group.[1][8] Additionally, due to the sensitive topic of Jaebeom's departure, all 2PM members were withdrawn from their regular appearances on variety shows.[9] The group finished re-filming their music video for "Heartbeat", the title song of their first full-length album, without Jaebeom on October 31, 2009. During a press conference, it was revealed that Jaebeom's vocals would not be removed from the songs.[10] The day after the now 6-member 2PM's full-length album was released, Park Jin-young released a statement that Jaebeom would return as a member of 2PM if he wanted to make a comeback, while indicating that his return was not imminent.[11][12] In further support of Jaebeom's place in the group, the six 2PM members have also decided to distribute their income from their 1st album with him, sending him an equally divided amount of the earnings.[13] The group's first full length album, titled 1:59PM, was released on November 10, 2009.[14] Both the album and title track, "Heartbeat", quickly rose to the #1 position on multiple music sales charts.[15]The group made their first comeback performance, signifying the beginning of their promotional activities for the album, on M.Net's ‘O Good Concert’ on Thursday, November 12, 2009,[16] subsequently making their KBS Music Bank, MBC Music Core and SBS Inkigayo comebacks on Friday, November 13, Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15, respectively. On November 20, 2009, 2PM performed at and was honored with two awards by the M.net Asian Music Awards (previously known as M.net KM Music Festival): the award for Best Male Group and Artist of the Year (the latter being one of the three most prestigious awards, or "Daesang"s, at the show, which also include Song of the Year and Album of the Year).[17] The group paid homage to him during their performance of "Again & Again", in which a spotlight was shown over Jaebeom's usual position in the dance formation and his vocals were not replaced.[18] On November 26, 2009, after two weeks of promotional activities for the 1:59PM album, 2PM earned their first #1 on a TV music show (KBS Music Bank's "K-Chart") since the album's release, with "Heartbeat",[19] which went on to take #1 on the K-Chart for three more weeks. In addition, "Heartbeat" achieved the "Mutizen" song award Triple Crown on SBS Inkigayo by being the #1 song the Inkigayo "Take 7" chart for three weeks, the maximum amount of time for which a nominated song is eligible to win. On December 30, 2009, at Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)'s end of the year Music Festival, "Again & Again" was recognized as "Song of the Year",[20] winning with 57,060 votes. 2PM followed up end-of-2009 activities with the second single off of 1:59PM album, "Tired of Waiting". The song was performed live for the first time at the SBS Music Festival on December 29, 2009. 2PM's promotion for the album ended with their SBS Inkigayo performance on January 17, 2010.

2010 - Present

On the cover of KoreAm, August 2010

On February 25, 2010, JYP Entertainment announced that Park Jaebeom would not be returning to 2PM, as his contract with the company had been permanently terminated.[21] A fan meeting/press conference was held two days later with the 6 remaining members of 2PM and JYP Entertainment CEO Choi Jungwook in attendance, where it was announced that although 2PM would continue promoting as 6 members, a new leader would not be chosen to replace Park. In mid-April 2010, 2PM released image and video teasers for their third single Don't Stop Can't Stop, for which the group promised to showcase an even stronger side of themselves than before.[22] The EP, containing six tracks, was released on April 19, 2010. The lead single, Without U, quickly rose to the #1 position on 6 different music charts.[23] The group made their television performance comeback on Mnet's music program M! Countdown on April 22, 2010. 2PM has been confirmed as the opening act for their label-mates, popular girl group Wonder Girls for 9 shows on the latter's United States headlining summer tour.[24] 2PM also performed at the 8th annual Korea Times Music Festival in Los Angeles, California on May 1, 2010, and at the Dream Concert in Seoul, South Korea on May 22, 2010.[25][26] On May 24, 2010, 2PM released the song "What's Your Celebration?" for the FIFA 2010 World Cup.[27] The song samples K'Naan's Wavin' Flag. On July 11th, Taecyeon & Wooyoung left the position of MCs at SBS Inkigayo. And a while after, on August 2nd, Wooyoung also left Winwin to concentrated on 2PM's busy schedule. Then they have prepared so hard

In December 2008, 2PM began to host the third season of MBC's Idol Show (아이돌군단의 떴다!그녀).[40] The segment ran from December 4, 2008 to March 26, 2009, with a total of seventeen episodes. The group also starred in a reality show on M.net, titled "Wild Bunny", in which the members escaped the pressures of stardom by performing ten forbidden activities of idols. The show ran from July 21, 2009 to September 1, 2009, with seven episodes aired; the airing of the final episode, which coincidentally featured the members engaged in a "Leader Olympics" game to select a new leader, was postponed indefinitely due to Jaebeom's internet controversy and his subsequent departure from the group.[41] In addition, Taecyeon and Wooyoung are hosting SBS (Seoul Broadcasting System)'s weekly music show Inkigayo, while Jaebeom and Chansung have also made regular appearances on 'Introducing Star Friends'. Since Jaebeom was voted off, Nichkhun replaced his position as the guest. Nichkhun and Wooyoung were also frequent guests on SBS's variety talent show Star King between April and October 2009, with the other 2PM members occasionally joining them. Recently, Taecyeon became a permanent cast member of the second season of Family Outing, a celebrity variety show airing on SBS.[42] Wooyoung is also now a co-host of the KBS celebrity talk show Win Win.[43] In March 2010, Junho returned as a permanent cast member of the sports variety show Dream Team 2,[44] also on KBS, for which he was part of the pilot episode in September before having to withdraw due to Jaebeom's controversy. In June 2010, Nichkhun signed on to be a part of the popular MBC celebrity reality show We Got Married, where he will act as a make-believe husband to Victoria (of Korean girl group f(x) fame).[45]

The members will act as Korea's spokespeople for the campaign.[49] In late October 2009, a commercial film (CF) of 2PM promoting Hanami (a Thailand snack company) was released, which also included Jaebeom; the commercial was said to be filmed prior to his departure in September. November 2009 saw multiple new endorsement deals for the group,[50] the first of which being a commercial and print campaign for Market O's "Real Brownie" pastry. Shortly thereafter, the group endorsed the Samsung Corby mobile phone, one of the newest mobile devices in Samsung's popular "Anycall" series, both on television and on the Samsung website.[51] 2PM is also currently endorsing Paris-Croissant Food Company's Paris Baguette bakery franchise, for which the group recorded a special Christmas song and are featured in a series of commercials with popular Korean actress Kim Tae Hee.[52] In 2010, 2PM has signed on to endorse Coca-Cola[4] as well as the clothing company SPRIS (also known as PONY).[53] Members Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Junsu and Wooyoung endorse Cass Beer, and Nichkhun has continued advertising for the Suzuki Jelato motorcycle in Thailand. In addition, 2PM now endorses Calvin Klein South Korea, as well as, most recently, It's Skin, a South Korean cosmetics and skin care brand. In mid-2010, 2PM has been chosen along Girls' Generation to be the spokesperson for Caribbean Bay.[54][55][56]
[57]

Shortly after, the members of 2PM (expect for Nichkhun) were chosen to sing the song "Fly to Seoul (Boom
