Sustainable answers for responsible business
In the pharmaceutical and life science industries, the goal is to improve the patients’ health and well-being. So, inherently, pharmaceutical companies must seek to achieve the highest standards in terms of product quality and safety. For the same reason, pharmaceutical companies have a greater incentive than many others to visibly demonstrate their corporate respect for diverse cultures and the global environment. But getting there is not easy. The development and production of medicines is costly. Vast quantities of energy, water, and other human and economic resources may be consumed during the life cycle of a typical pharmaceutical product.

By following the approaches outlined in the Responsible Care® program – originally developed within the global chemical industry – the pharmaceutical and life science industries strive to continuously improve its performance in terms of quality, safety, corporate and social responsibility and profitability. A partner who cares Achieving the goals of Responsible Care requires an innovative approach to business that focuses on information, transparency and knowledge. This is where the pharmaceutical industry needs a committed, knowledgeable partner. Partners who care deeply about the specific concerns and challenges of the life science industry. Partners who can offer not only the right products and systems for specific technological challenge, but who have a deep understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing and production processes. Partners who can help the pharmaceutical and life science industries in balancing economic, ecologic, and social interests and their responsibilities.

Optimizing water use
Water is the largest ingredient in almost every drug produced. When used in the manufacturing of drugs or drug products, water is subject to the requirements of current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), whether or not the product stays in the final product (for example, rinsing formulation). Our innovative technologies and processes to optimize water use are the perfect answer to water cost, scarcity and strict regulations. They offer cost-saving techniques that enhance the reliability and performance of water systems. And they help to manage the three main forces behind water conservation in the industry: reduce operating costs, meet regulatory requirements and conserve natural resources. At the same time, they improve the public perception of your company. Advantages at a glance • Significantly reduce water consumption through plant optimization • Ensure consistent processes and production by meeting highest water quality requirements • Meet ever increasing industrial wastewater regulations, while improving efficiency and reducing waste disposal costs • Recover cooling water in buildings • Reduce water consumption through optimized processes on the basis of Totally Integrated Automation (TIA), the open system architecture for all demands in automation

Minimizing waste
In pharmaceutical and life science industries, large amounts of valuable resources and money are wasted due to processes that create off-specification or low-yield products. For Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production, about 200 kilograms of solid waste are produced per ton of API, including solvents and other toxic organics that are used in production. Our unique and comprehensive portfolio enables the industry to avoid waste in inefficient clinical batch production and batch-to-batch variations. Off-specification production is also minimized to avoid unusable products. Furthermore, our solutions minimize waste in laboratory testing and prevent products from expiring in the warehouse. With SIPAT, for example, we offer a state-of-the-art software solution to support the application of Process Analytical Technology (PAT), and thus gain a better process understanding. Advantages at a glance • Increases energy efficiency through waste heat recovery solutions • Decreases laboratory testing efforts and reduces waste through software solutions for process optimization as right-first-time and online analysis • Prevents expired raw materials and products through tracking and tracing solutions that manage and control the entire supply chain • Reduces intermediate material and waste with efficient continuous manufacturing processes on the basis of TIA • Optimizes batch analysis through state-of-the-art chromatography • Reduces waste by making quality monitoring part of the process control loop with SIPAT – for right-first-time manufacturing

Maximizing energy efficiency
Buildings consume 40 percent of the world‘s energy and are responsible for 21 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. In the pharmaceutical and life science industries heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and cooling (HVAC) technology ranks among the top energy consumers, especially for the laboratories and clean rooms of the production environment. Our intelligent solutions help companies maintain the controlled ambient conditions that are crucial to product quality and, at the same time, reduce the energy consumption of the HVAC technology systems. We support our customers in realizing energy-efficient building blueprints and with designing processes to save energy as well as reduce waste and emissions. Sensors and monitoring solutions, for example, can be used to identify sources of energy loss and inefficient assets – in order to increase asset utilization. Advantages at a glance • Optimize energy efficiency in plants and processes with software solutions for integrated life cycle management • Increase the energy efficiency of buildings with intelligent and integrated building and room automation • Manage utilities to save energy • Lower power loss by 40 percent compared to standard motors with energy-saving motors • Enable energy savings in fans, pumps and compressors of up to 60–70 percent with choke controls, electric drives and frequency converters • Reduce lead time and energy concurrently with integrated solutions on the basis of Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) • Optimize the use of energy and reduce energy costs by up to 20 percent with intelligent power management systems

A sound approach to sustainability
Sustainability these days is a buzzword used in many different contexts with many different connotations. But what does it mean? We at Siemens don’t just talk about sustainability. We’ve made the three areas of sustainable development – environment, business and society – the cornerstone of all our activities.

In the area of the environment, we’re providing innovative products and solutions to improve both our own ecobalance and those of our customers and suppliers. In the area of business, we’re focusing on long-term value creation. And in the area of society, we’re fostering our own employees and striving to be good citizens in all the communities in which we are active. As our history shows, our understanding of sustainability is closely linked to our company values – responsibility, excellence and innovation. To achieve excellence, to capture leading positions in the markets of tomorrow, to develop innovative technologies that help ensure the future viability of modern civilization – this has always been our vision and our challenge. Today, we offer the expertise of a global technology leader and the industry know-how accumulated through decades of successful partnership with our customers – in the pharmaceutical industry and beyond. This multi-disciplinary, multi-facetted pool of knowledge is probably one of our biggest assets. We can afford to listen to our customers’ questions first, because we do not have simply one answer to everything. And we can afford to think in the long term. By utilizing our portfolio and our expertise, the pharmaceutical industry can address current and future challenges. Our technologies and solutions contribute to long-term sustainability – through plant and process optimization, better use of resources, perfect processes and product quality. With our solutions for sustainability, the pharmaceutical industry can operate profitably, create a healthy margin and improve its competitiveness.
