Horseman gains national ranking
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Tabernacle Sun
Josh Inman is a top competitor
in the nation when it comes to
western riding. His life is dedi-
cated to the animals and the com-
petition.
His father, Shawn Inman, was
involved in the horse racing in-
dustry and is currently a breeder.
His sister also rides horses and
helped pique Josh’s interest in
the sport. As for Josh, he is a na-
tionally ranked western events
equestrian rider.
“My dad and my older sister
got me into it. My dad used to
race horses and used to have
standard breeds. He set his first
world record with one of his
horses on my first birthday,” said
Josh Inman.
Inman has been riding since
he was 2 years old and is current-
ly a student at Seneca High
School. He has been looking at
colleges and traveled throughout
the summer months to compete
with his mare.
“When we go to [All American
Quarter Horse Congress] con-
gress, he’s been top 10. Western
riding is a pattern, and there are
cones set up. They need to change
leads in a timely step,” said
Shawn Inman.
Josh has been training with
close family friend Gary Weeks,

PLAN AHEAD! PLAN AHEAD! A loss to your home after a storm
means no lights, no garage door opener, no power for the refrigera-
tor, appliances, computers and more! Can you live with that?
Riders begin with 100 points
whose stables are located in Cape
May. The two have traveled to-
gether over the past two years for
competitions and continue to
work together. Inman began
breeding and is working with
Weeks to train and break, or fa-
miliarize the horse to equipment
and racing methods, his colt Ra-
diant in Black with the hopes of
showing him next year.
“I learned more about how to
ride and to make myself better.
Now I have better horses, and I’m
a lot better than I was,” said
Inman.
Most recently, Inman compet-
ed in Augusta, N.J., winning the
Region Five competition in the
western riding youth division.
Inman went one full year without
a loss in western riding. With
that, comes the All American
Quarter Horse Congress, the
world’s largest single breed horse
show, this October in western rid-
ing. Inman will be one of seven
youth representing New Jersey
in the National Youth Team Tour-
nament. Determination of the
champion is through a scoring
system accumulated over the
past year of competitions. The
rider with the most accrued
points moves up.
Riders begin with 100 points
for each individual performance.
Through the routine, judges
deduct points for each mistake
made by both the horse and the
rider.
“You start of with 100. You
have lead changes with your
horse and must do the lead
changes between the cones. You
have to weave between the cones
and do a lead change with each
cone,” said Inman. “Points are
taken off when the lead changes
aren’t perfect between the rider
and the horse.”
Inman scored a 98 at his last
competition and, for the third
year in a row, will be represent-
ing the state at the Quarter Horse
Congress.
The show runs for three and a
half weeks in October in Colum-
bus, Ohio. Inman will be riding
his quarter horse mare, Surely
IM Hot at the event.
“I’m very excited. I’ll be out
there with a lot of colleges and
college scouts. You meet a lot of
important people,” Inman said.
Numerous universities are
scouting Inman for his riding
prowess. Of those universities,
West Point, South Carolina
Coastal Academy and the Univer-
sity of Findley, located in Ohio,
have reached out and shown
their interest in Inman.
According to Inman, he is most
interested to South Carolina, but
plans to look further into his op-
tions for the future.

“A lot of people I know are
going there [South Carolina
Costal Academy], and it’s got a
good equine program,” Inman
said.
Inman is taking all college
prep courses at Seneca in addi-
tion to ROTC, and is considering
joining the Army or the Air
Force following his graduation
from high school.
“I plan on going in the military
first, but I want to train and
eventually breed horses,” Inman
said.
Following a college degree,
Inman wants remain active in
breeding and riding horses by
possibly opening a business
training horses, but remains un-
sure of what he would like his
major to be.

G
ov. Christie last week said he
increased funding for schools
statewide by almost $200 mil-
lion. He also said that brought state
support for schools to its highest level
ever.
Now, while providing a quality edu-
cation requires more than just tossing
around dollars, there’s no doubt that
local districts are grateful for the sup-
port. They remember all too well re-
cent years when state support was
slashed and tax-hike caps put in place.
Seeing more funds from the state no
doubt makes life a bit easier for all of
them.
When Christie slashed state funding
for schools shortly after taking office,
it indeed created hardship. But it also
made boards of education and admin-
istrators take a step back and rethink
how things are done.
One of the benefits we’ve seen is a
willingness and even encouragement
on the part of school districts to in-
volve the public in the budget process.
That’s not to say that some districts
weren’t actively courting public sup-
port before the budget cuts. But, when
everyone found themselves in the same
difficult situation, having to make
tough decisions about taxes and spend-
ing, it seemed like there was new em-
phasis on building public involvement.
We think school board member is
one of the toughest jobs around. Try-
ing to balance the mandate of provid-
ing children with a quality education
with keeping taxes as low as possible is
not easy.
But school boards responded. They
not only opened up the budget process,
they began to seek out creative ways to
save and raise money. They created
partnerships with other districts, for
example. Some are even looking at in-
volving corporate partners who want
to advertise on school property.
Yes, the added state money is wel-
come. But let’s also remember that the
sharp budget cuts from a few years
ago, though painful at the time, also led
to improvements.
in our opinion
Education dollars
There’s more money for schools, but the budget cuts also led to progress
Doing things differently
The governor talked about increased
state support for schools. No doubt
that was good news for school board
members and administrators. But let’s
not overlook the progress that came
from the budget cuts a few years ago.

Dorothy is president of historical society
farms in the area in addition to
opening up a business plaza off
Route 206 North, originally
bought as a gas station and even-
tually converted to stores.
Dorothy is the president of the
Tabernacle Historical Society.
“I’m from Philadelphia, and
my parents had a summer home
here in Tabernacle,” said
Dorothy.
“We met when we were 16
where we had our wedding recep-
tion at Mechanics Hall [Town
Hall] at a baseball dance,” said
Teddy. “They used to hold base-
ball dances to raise money for
bats and bases and catcher’s
equipment and all those kind of
things. She came to a dance with
another guy on the team and he
couldn’t dance and I could. That’s
how we got acquainted.”
Dorothy’s father was a
Philadelphia police officer and
brought the family down for vaca-
tions in the summer. The family
had come down to Tabernacle
every summer since she was 6
years old.
“We used to close the house in
the city and come down here and
go to the beaches in the area. A lot
of his friends bought houses in
the area,” said Dorothy.
The rest was history.
The two were wed in Medford
Lakes and the reception was held
in Mechanics Hall.
Teddy is the third generation of
his family to live in Tabernacle
and his relatives continue to ex-
pand and chooses to live in Taber-
nacle.
“My grandfather owned a big
barn here in Tabernacle, but then
I have my daughters here, my
granddaughters here, my great
grandchildren are here, my
nephew is here,” said Teddy. “Six
generations.”
Teddy has been around to see
Tabernacle experience its biggest
changes.
His parents and siblings lived
through Captain Carranza’s
crash before Teddy was born, the
introduction of electricity to the
area and general growth and pro-
duction of the town.
“I’ve seen electricity come to
Tabernacle. When I grew up, we
had kerosene lamps and candle-
light. We got electricity in 1939,
the same year they completed
[Route] 206,” said Teddy.
The site of Seneca High School
was the residence of Teddy twice,
as a child and a newly married
man.
“Where Seneca is, I lived there
twice. I lived there in 1936, and
then I lived there again when we
got married,” said Teddy.
The two didn’t attend college
but took classes for their careers
through Rutgers. Teddy was the
youngest tax assessor for the
state in 1958 and Dorothy was one
of the first women assessors.
Additionally she taught CCD for
35 years and raised seven chil-
dren.
“I told the council I would not
take it unless I was schooled. I
took classes at Rutgers extension
services at Mt. Holly High
School,” said Teddy.
The family enjoyed what the
area had to offer from Wharton
State Forest, the same summer
activities Dorothy used to enjoy
spending her summers in Taber-
nacle.
“We used to go there after din-
ner to Atsion Lake and let them
[the kids] go swimming,” said
Dorothy.
The Yates pride themselves in
their happy marriage and the
lives they’ve built together.
“What’s the secret? It’s give and
take. She never thought much of
baseball, but she went. I never
liked the opera much, but I went,”
said Teddy.
The couple remains close, hav-
ing traveled the world together
experiencing various cultures
through trips and cruises. They
often travel to Florida to their
time-share and enjoy the time
they spend together.
Despite all the travels, they al-
ways make their way back to
their homestead in Tabernacle.
“I’ll die in this town,” said
Teddy. “You can’t stop progress. I
don’t mind seeing change around
here.”
The property the Yates live on
contains a lake. Bordering it is a
creek best known as Bread and
Cheese Run, running through
Tabernacle up through Rancocas
Valley.
“According to legend, a little girl
named Mary was walking through
the woods when she spotted an
Indian Girl nearby. Mary tried to
speak to the girl, but she did not
understand English. As a gesture
of friendship, Mary offered the
young girl part of her lunch.
The two new friends sat down
by a stream and shared some
bread and cheese. The young
Indian girl then took Mary to her
village to meet her father. Her
father was the chief, and the
Indian girl was Princess Ann –
later known as Indian Ann,”
according to a booklet provided
to young students by retired
teacher Ann Franzen.
“Because of the meeting of the
two girls, this area of Tabernacle
came to be known as
Inawendiwin, the Indian word for
friendship, and the stream where
they met is called Bread and
Cheese Run. Girl Scout Camp
Inawendiwin was established in
1950 near the original meeting
site.”
The area is known as “friend-
ship,” it is believed the encounter
of the two girls was what initiated
the reference to the town.
“Our stream that runs here is
our property line and that’s called
Bread and Cheese Run. A little
white settler girl, her mother
gave her a sandwich of bread and
cheese, walked around with her
lunch. She ran into the little
Indian girl and shared with her.
We think that’s why this area is
called Inawendiwin, or ‘friend-
ship,’” said Dorothy Yates. “It
fits.”

Combining print advertising with an online advertising campaign is the most comprehensive
way to reach all your local customers. But it was an expensive proposition… until now.
Sun Newspaper print customers can now take advantage of special online packages and
pricing. Our online advertising packages combine local exposure on well-known national
websites such as Discovery, Comedy Central, Time, Rachael
Ray, Facebook, USA Today and The Weather Channel with advertising on Elauwit’s hyperlocal
websites in South Jersey, Central Jersey and Philadelphia.
So whether your customers are catching up on local happenings on our websites or checking
in on their friends
on Facebook, they’ll be seeing your business.
Elauwit offers 3 digital advertising packages:
• Special online advertising packages available
to Sun Newspaper print customers only
• 3-month contract required
• Pre-payment required
