The anatomy of letters
Everything you could ever want to know about printing letters and numbers

Letter Fountain The anatomy of type Joep Pohlen (Ed.) Hardcover, with typographic ruler, format: 16.8 x 24 cm (6.6 x 9.4 in.), 640 pp. 978–3–8365–2509–1 $ 69.99 / CAD 79.99

Special features include:

• thoroughly hardbound in half linen with three ribbon bookmarks • 144-page appendix with resourceful glossary and indices • convenient typographic ruler with conversions between four measurement systems and hidden shortcuts for your Apple keyboard!

Looking back as far as man’s first efforts to communicate with visual signs and drawings, Letter Fountain is a completely unique typeface handbook: in addition to examining the form and anatomy of every letter in the alphabet (as well as punctuation marks and special characters), the book cross-references type designs with important works of art and art movements from Gutenberg’s times until today. Further attention is given to the esthetics of the digital age and typographical recommendations such as the choice of the right typeface for a job. Rounding out the guide are an in-depth comparison

between sans-serif and serif typefaces, an essay about measuring systems and indications, advice about typographic rules, plus a manual for developing digital fonts. Over 150 typefaces, their origins, and font characteristics are discussed in detail, visually explained by full page tables including scale, weight, and useful alternatives. The extensive appendix contains a general index, a typeface index (more than 300 are depicted in the book), an index of over 250 type designers, an exhaustive index of type foundries, a graphical dictionary, and a bibliography for further reading.

The original Dutch edition Letterfontein received a Certificate for Typographic Excellence from Type Directors Club New York (TDC) in 2010, and a red-dot design award from the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Through the cougar’s eyes: the road to sexual liberation

ADULTS ONLY! Days of the Cougar The Outrageous Visual Diary of sexual Adventurer Liz Earls Dian Hanson (Ed.) Hardcover, format: 22.3 x 16.5 cm (8.8 x 6.5 in.), 320 pp. English/German/French edition 978–3–8365–1979–3 $ 39.99 / CAD 49.99

“I know this party is not going to last forever, so I’m going to dance every dance, drink every drink, and have every young man — and the occasional woman — who smiles back at me.”
— Liz Earls

Opposite: “Savoring the sight of 20-year-old room service waiter Vinny, my youngest conquest, in a Manhattan hotel room.”

“My life had become a playground, and it was exactly what I wanted,” writes photographer Liz Earls in the introduction to this groundbreaking book detailing her transformation from middleaged, overweight Human Resources director to sexual adventurer, self-portraitist, and unabashed cougar. A cougar, as defined by the Urban Dictionary, is “a 35+ year old female who is on the hunt for a much younger, energetic, willing-to-do-anything male.” For Earls that “anything” must include collaborating in her quest to capture authentic human passion. Since losing 100

pounds at age 40, quitting her straight job, and embarking on a career as an erotic photographer, Earls has documented her sexual experiences with dozens of men. Her work has been described as a midlife version of Natacha Merritt’s Digital Diaries, as intensely personal, and as sexually unbounded. She speculates that a woman who has as much sex as she does— four to six times a day with multiple partners— creates an aura that draws new men to her. It seems to be true, as Days of the Cougar graphically illustrates in over 250 photographs of Earls seducing men from 19 to 32 years of age. When
—6—

she decided to devote the second half of her life to pleasure, Earls realized that, “If I just shot on the sidelines as an observer it would be boring. I had to feel it too, to put everything I’d recently learned about my sexuality into it.” She never deviates from this path, exploring every aspect of her lust for young men in graphic color and black and white photos, accompanied by diary entries, e-mails, and text messages shared with her eager prey. Sexy, shocking, and surprisingly loving, Days of the Cougar reworks our notions of age and attraction, and will inspire anyone feeling trapped by society’s expectations.

“If you are a sports fan, you have to be a Neil Leifer admirer, for you have been seeing his pictures and they’ve been shaping your impressions and memories for five decades.”
—Bob Costas

Opposite: Jets quarterback Joe Namath (#12), 1966

In 1958, journalist Neil Leifer took the picture that remains one of his most famous to this day. The day he got the shot—Alan Ameche’s gamewinning “Sudden Death” touchdown—was Leifer’s 16th birthday. This game, called “The Greatest Ever Played,” signaled football’s emergence as America’s new national pastime; formerly half-empty stadiums welcomed sold-out crowds seemingly overnight, while football sur-

passed baseball in national television ratings. Starting then, on any given Sunday Leifer was most likely shooting a football game somewhere in America. While best known for his iconic photograph of Muhammad Ali towering over a fallen Sonny Liston, it is his football pictures Leifer considers his best. This collection represents the best of his best, culled from over 10,000 rolls of film on

the sport. With an introduction assembled from the best football columns of the era by famed sports columnist Jim Murray, and incisive captions detailing the legendary players, coaches, and games, this volume carries the guts and glory of the game into the end zone. Appetite for art: over one hundred years of menu graphics

menu Design in America, 1850–1985 Jim Heimann, steven Heller, John mariani Hardcover, format: 25 x 31.7 cm (9.8 x 12.5 in.), 392 pp. English/German/French edition 978–3–8365–2662–3 $ 59.99 / CAD 64.99

Opposite: Rainbow Grill, Rockefeller Center, c. 1936, New York

• Nearly 800 stunning examples of menu design • Covers more than a century of exquisite vintage design

Until restaurants became commonplace in the late 1800s, printed menus for meals were rare commodities reserved for special occasions. As restaurants proliferated, the menu became more than just a culinary listing. The design of the menu became an integral part of eating out and as such menus became a marketing tool and a favored keepsake. Menu Design is an omnibus showcasing the best

examples of this graphic art. With nearly 800 examples, illustrated in vibrant color, this deluxe volume not only showcases this extraordinary collection of paper ephemera but serves as a history of restaurants and dining out in America. In addition to the menu covers, many menu interiors are featured providing an epicurean tour and insight into more than a hundred years of eating out. An introduction on the his— 10 —

tory of menu design by graphic design writer Steven Heller and extended captions by culinary historian John Mariani accompany the menus throughout the book. Various photographs of restaurants round out this compendium that will appeal to anyone who enjoys dining out and its graphic and gastronomic history.

A collection of Helmut Newton’s test Polaroids

Helmut Newton, Polaroids June Newton (Ed.) Hardcover, format: 21 x 27.5 cm (8.3 x 10.8 in.), 224 pp. English/German/French edition 978–3–8365–2886–3 $ 59.99 / CAD 64.99

Exhibition: Helmut Newton Foundation museum für Fotografie, Berlin June 10, 2011 – November 20, 2011

Opposite: US Vogue, Los Angeles, 1984

Polaroids occupy a special place in the hearts of many photo enthusiasts who remember a time when “instant photography” meant one-of-akind prints that developed within minutes of clicking the shutter. What was once a crucial tool for photographers to test their shots before shooting on film has now become obsolete in the face of digital photography. Luckily for us, legendary photographer Helmut Newton saved his

test Polaroids, allowing a privileged and rare chance to see the tests from a selection of his greatest shoots over a period of decades, including many from the TASCHEN titles SUMO, A Gun for Hire, and Work. Put together by his widow, June Newton, this collection captures the magic of Helmut Newton photo shoots as only Polaroids can.

Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world’s top architects to design summer pavilions—temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a showplace for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists ranging from Matthew Barney to Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois or Rachel Whiteread. The pavilions in the program that was conceived in 2000 by the Serpentine Director Julia

Peyton-Jones, are the work of international architects or design teams who at the time of the Serpentine’s invitation have not completed a building in England. A maximum of six months from invitation to completion is allotted. The only architecture program of its type in the world, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions attract up to 250,000 visitors each summer. The Serpentine Pavilion is regularly ranked in the top 5 most attended architecture and design exhibitions worldwide in The Art Newspaper’s annual survey of museum and gallery visitor figures. The architect Richard Rogers has stated,

“The pavilions, erected for relatively little money, are unbelievably good. I couldn’t single one out that I have liked more than the others— they have all been masterpieces.” This book is the first to bring together all of the Serpentine Pavilions. Interviews with Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones and Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist complete the description of the pavilions, illustrated by the original drawings by each architect and photos of the completed works.

Our first Ed Fox title, Glamour From the Ground Up, introduced the heir to the peculiar photographic niche long ruled by the great Elmer Batters. California native Fox had not even heard of Batters when he first started photographing women with an emphasis on their feet. In fact, he thought he was the only young man who checked out a woman’s feet before her face, and most of the time couldn’t meet his models’ eyes for fear they’d discern his secret. Then he became the official foot photographer for Leg

Show magazine, just months before Batters’ death, and learned of the big shoes he had to fill. At the same time he realized there were thousands of men just like himself—except without the talent to capture their passion on film, or as today, in pixels. Since then, Ed Fox has become internationally known for a sensual photographic style that captures every curve of a woman’s body, right down to the tips of her toes. In Ed Fox II he brings us voluptuous new models, arresting locations—

many blending the desert landscapes of Southern California with Fox’s passion for automobiles—and fantasies mild to extra spicy, all shot in warm, caressing natural light. And, like Glamour From the Ground Up, Ed Fox II comes with a 60-minute original DVD, bringing the still photos to vibrant life.

First, The Big Book of Breasts, then The Big Penis Book, The Big Book of Legs, and the weighty Big Butt Book. What could follow but an in-depth exploration of the female pudendum, that coveted orifice man spends nine months trying to escape, and a lifetime attempting to reenter? The Big Book of Pussy, not to be confused with a book of big pussy, closes out this popular series with an offering sure to be as controversial as it is popular. As in previous volumes, editor Dian Hanson delves into the historical significance of this humble os, to show how the yoni has been coveted, feared, reviled,

and worshipped by civilizations worldwide, from New Guinea to old Ireland. The text is supported by playful photographs of women exposing their vulvas, from 1900 to the present day. Because depiction of this body part has long been wrapped in unwarranted shame, The Big Book of Pussy reframes the subject, featuring models who expose their most private part enthusiastically, happily, with smiles spread wide as… well, you get the picture. And with 400+ photos the point is made emphatically, in images both naturally furry and stylishly groomed.

Included are interviews with the auteur known as Pussyman, the ex-cop who turned masturbation into millions with a toy called the Fleshlight, Vanessa del Rio, squirter Flower Tucci, vaginal performance artist Mouse, and the singular Buck Angel. John Gould (1804–1881) was without question the most prolific ornithological artist of the 19th century, and the only one to rival John James Audubon in ambition and quality. Gould shared the romantic enthusiasm of his time for bird specimens as well as the popular impulse to catalogue. He combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic and entrepreneurial talents. Drawing on these abilities, he embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian

Britain. Gould’s unparalleled career spanned five decades, during which he produced a series of books depicting birds from all over the world. The dazzling illustrations from Gould’s Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans, are generally thought to represent his most dramatic, magnificent images. The amazing range of vivid colors—shiny black, vibrant red, yellow, and orange—creates an unprecedented sense of animation. Shown against simple backgrounds, the birds seem to emerge, large and engaging, from the page; Gould’s
— 32 —

toucans appear as living creatures, not twodimensional representations. The inspiration for Toucans came while Gould was working on his Birds of Europe, when he became fascinated by the toucan collection of a fellow ornithologist. He made several trips to central European museums to gather material for Toucans, and after publication of the first edition, redrew some of the plates and added 20 new birds to this revised and expanded second edition. All are included here.

Exhibition: mori Art museum in Tokyo metabolism: urbanism and Architecture september 17, 2011 – January 15, 2012
Opposite: Nakagin Capsule Tower by Kisho Kurokawa

Having wandered the ruins of Hiroshima, Tokyo and other Japanese cities after WW II, The Metabolists—four architects, a critic, an industrial designer and a graphic designer—showed, with the launch of their manifesto Metabolism 1960, how they would employ biological systems (aided by Japan’s massive advances in technology) as inspiration for buildings and cities that could change and adapt to the vicissitudes of modern life. Units could be added or removed from buildings like Kisho Kurokawa’s Capsule Tower in Tokyo as required; buildings themselves could be added or removed from cities at will in the cell-like master-plans of Fumihiko Maki.

Project Japan features a series of vivid, empathetic conversations, replete with surprising connections and occasional clashes between Koolhaas and Obrist and their subjects. The story that unfolds is illuminated, contradicted and validated by commentaries from a broad range of their forebearers, associates, critics, and progeny, including Toyo Ito and Charles Jencks. Interspersed with the interviews and commentaries are hundreds of never-before-seen images: master-plans from Manchuria to Tokyo, intimate snapshots of the Metabolists at work and play, architectural models, magazine excerpts and astonishing sci-fi urban visions. Presented in a clear chronology from the tabula
— 36 —

rasa of a colonized Manchuria in the 1930s; a devastated Japan after the war; to the establishment of Metabolism at the 1960 World Design Conference; to the rise of Kisho Kurokawa as the first celebrity architect; to the apotheosis of the movement at Expo ’70 in Osaka. Koolhaas and Obrist unearth a history that casts new light on the key issues that both enervate and motivate architecture today: celebrity and seriousness, sustainability and monumentality, globalization, government participation (and abdication), and the necessity for architecture to reach beyond its traditional boundaries in order to embrace the future.

Opposite: Marilyn Monroe, 1962

“This book is really two books. It is a biography, and it is also a pictorial retrospective of an actress whose greatest love affair was conceivably with the camera.” Norman Mailer wrote these words in his 1973 biography, Marilyn. Now TASCHEN has paired Mailer’s original text with Bert Stern’s photographs from the legendary Last Sitting—widely considered the most intimate photographs of Monroe ever taken—to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world’s most famous, a symbol of glamour and eroticism for

an entire generation. But though she was feted and adored by her public, her private life was that of a little girl lost, desperate to find love and security. Mailer’s Marilyn is beautiful, tragic, and complex. As Mailer reflects upon her life— from her bleak childhood through to the mysterious circumstances of her death—she emerges as a symbol of the bizarre decade during which she reigned as Hollywood's greatest female star. This book, conceived by Lawrence Schiller, Mailer’s collaborator on five works, combines the author’s masterful text with Stern’s penetrating images of the 36-year-old Marilyn.
— 38 —

Photographed for Vogue magazine over three days at the Bel-Air Hotel, Marilyn had never allowed such unfettered access, nor had she looked so breathtakingly beautiful. Three weeks later, mysteriously, she was dead. In this bold synthesis of literary classic and legendary portrait sitting, Mailer and Stern lift the veils of confusion surrounding Monroe—the woman, the star, the sex symbol—and offer profound insight into an iconic figure whose true personality remains an enigma even today.

Our groundbreaking movies by decade series continues with this new volume dedicated to the most interesting and important films made in the decade since the turn of the millennium. A decade characterized by the rise of a new era in global politics and technology, the 2000s were most notably marked by September 11, 2001 and the ensuing wars in the Middle East, as well as the explosion of social networking and mobile computing. This comprehensive volume

covers an inspiringly broad range of titles made during a unique period in history, from the fantastical special effects masterpieces Lord of the Rings and the 3D film Avatar; to entertaining fare such as the Bourne action films, the Harry Potter series, Moulin Rouge, Borat, and Inglorious Basterds; socially and politically conscious cinema, including Hurt Locker, Babel, Bowling for Columbine, and City of God; and arthouse standouts such as Brokeback Mountain,

Mulholland Drive, Dogville, Talk to Her, No Country for Old Men, and Black Swan. If indeed we are approaching the end of cinema—it can be argued that the 2000s were the last decade of cinema as we knew it, before technology altered it beyond recognition and the movie theater was superseded by the computer screen—then this study is both a celebration of moviemaking and an elegy for a soon-to-be-lost art.

Accept no substitutes: Wolfgang Tillmans could well be the coolest photographer on the planet. Always imitated, never bettered, he’s the lensmeister of the zeitgeist, the photo-journo who went artside, a man in constant demand, moving effortlessly from magazine to fashion shoot to gallery retrospective. He creates identities, he’s the brand name of hip. From Ray Gun to i-D, his images feel iconic before they’re out of the fluid. I’ll be your mirror, he whispers, and the Gen X-kids find themselves reflected in his always open pictures.

From the portraits that made him famous, through the still lifes and landscapes (undermining the genres with every shot), Tillmans’ work is high color, dirty realist heaven. Finding the still point in the information overload, the sexuality in the machine, and the image in the image saturation, Tillmans gives us the brief epiphanies we might just remember as our own. Un film de Almodóvar: whether appearing in his stylish opening credits or on the suggestive poster that invariably accompanies each of his films, this announcement triggers a range of expectations. Sexy and subversive, colorful and controversial, passionate and provocative, Pedro Almodóvar’s world is unlike any other director’s. Thanks to his remarkably cohesive and consistent œuvre, the Manchegan maverick has become a reliable brand, his name a byword for the visual opulence, experimentation and eroticism of post-Franco Spanish cinema. Almodóvar found fame with self-penned, gender-bending plots depicting the often comic misfortunes of junkies, nuns, housewives, whores, transvestites and transsexuals. Praised by critics, championed by fellow film-makers,

adored by actors and adorned with international awards, he is the most successful Spanish filmmaker since Luis Buñuel, with films such as Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, All About My Mother, Talk to Her, and Volver. A self-taught auteur, Almodóvar draws on influences as diverse as Douglas Sirk, Frank Tashlin, Andy Warhol and John Waters. His feature films borrow liberally from, and frequently invert, traditional genres of classic American cinema— including film noir, melodrama and screwball comedy. Yet they remain unmistakably Iberian, rooted predominantly in the director’s beloved Madrid, exploring Spanish myths and modernity to the rhythms of bolero-laden soundtracks. Most recently, the enfant terrible of the 1980s arthouse scene has matured into the Academy

Award-winning director of All About My Mother, a film universally acknowledged for its emotional resonance, sophistication and craftsmanship. Almodóvar’s distinctive, once marginalized world has finally entered the mainstream. For this unprecedented monograph, Pedro Almodóvar has given TASCHEN complete access to his archives, including never-beforepublished images, such as personal photos he took during filming. In addition to writing captions for the photos, Almodóvar invited prominent Spanish authors to write introductions to each of his films, and selected many of his own texts to accompany this visual odyssey through his complete works.

• Magnificent facsimile scroll with companion volume in a protective slipcase • Richly illustrated, continuous text, 6.5 m (over 21 ft) long, unfurls from left to right like antique rotuli • The biblical text of the Book of Esther in three languages • Fold-out sheet providing an overview of all the illustrations

Opposite: .........Caption ..........

Own a facsimile of an 18th-century Esther scroll, an important symbol of the celebration and prosperity of Jewish culture! The use of scrolls dates back to ancient history. Bearing written texts, rolls of papyrus or parchment dealing with matters from all spheres of life—private, religious, administrative, legal, and political—were already in use as long ago as Ancient Rome. One of the most well-known scrolls in history is the Esther scroll, or Hebrew megillah, which is devoted solely to the story of Queen Esther and is read on the feast of Purim. An uninhibitedly joyful festival, Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jews in the Persian empire under the rule of King Xerxes (485–465 BCE). The word Purim is derived from the Hebrew “pur,” meaning “lot,” and

refers to the fact that the Persian minister Haman determined the time that all Jews should be destroyed by lot. This circumstance, related in the Hebrew Bible’s Book of Esther, is publicly read out from the megillah in the synagogue at Purim. Over the centuries, specimens of Esther scrolls have formed the nuclei of many important collections. The megillah in the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library in Hanover, dated 1746 and measuring 6.5 meters long, is a very fine and rare example and serves as the original from which TASCHEN’s exacting facsimile is produced; this particular megillah is unique not only in terms of its lavish illuminations but also because, despite the fact that the Book of Esther has no pendant in Christian religious practice, it contains a Christian biblical text in the German
— 50 —

language. Scrolls used in synagogues are not adorned with decorative elements—since scrolls used in the home are not subject to this rule, this very ornately and beautifully adorned Hanover scroll was clearly destined for private use. It arose in a Jewish context: its artist was Wolf Leib Katz Poppers, a Jewish scribe and illustrator from Hildesheim. In fact, the history of this scroll leads back to the world of the court Jews in imperial Vienna under Maria Theresa. TASCHEN’s facsimile of the scroll is accompanied by a commentary volume which emphasizes the literary quality of the biblical Book of Esther, its importance for the Purim festival, and its significance for Jewish art, leaving the reader with an understanding and appreciation of the artistic quality and cultural background of the megillah.

This book explores his complete works to date via encyclopedia-style entries, arranged chronologically by categories: art editions, furniture, objects, timepieces, transport, and unreleased projects. From early iconic works such as Lockheed Lounge (which holds the world record for the highest price paid for a piece of
— 62 —

designer furniture, at over two million dollars) to more recent, large scale projects such as the Ford O21C concept car, the Kelvin jet, and the interior of Qantas’s Airbus A380, this tome leaves no stone unturned.

L’air de Paris
Paris Portrait of a city

The vivid history of the capital of love and photography

A city built on two millennia of history, Paris is entering the third century of its love story with photography. It was on the banks of the Seine that Niépce and Daguerre officially gave birth to this new art that has flourished ever since, developing a distinctive language and becoming a vital tool of knowledge. Paris, Portrait of a City leads us through what Goethe described as a “universal city where every step upon a bridge or a square recalls a great past, where a fragment of history is unrolled at the corner of every street.” This history is recounted in photographs, all the way from Daguerre’s incunabula to the most recent

images. In fact, Paris can claim to be the only city in the world whose archives house an almost complete record of over a century and a half of transformations. This huge panorama of nearly 600 pages and as many photographs makes Paris, Portrait of a City unique. This book brings together the past and the present, the monumental and the everyday, objects and people. Thanks to images captured by the most illustrious photographers—Daguerre, Marville, Atget, Lartigue, Brassaï, Kertész, Ronis, Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson and many more—but also by many unknown amateurs, these pages show the essential workings of a human drama acted out
— 64 —

on the stage of history. These visions attempt to bottle just a little of that “Parisian air”, something of that particular poetry given out by the stones and inhabitants of a constantly changing city that has inspired untold numbers of writers and artists over the ages. Presenting an exciting patchwork of images from past and present, Paris, Portrait of a City is a huge and unique photographic study that, in a way, is the true family album of all Parisians. It is to them, and to all lovers of this capital city, that this vibrant, loving and tender testimony is dedicated.

Opposite: Incarnation, oil on panel, 2009

Blending themes of pop culture with techniques reminiscent of the old masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His work first garnered attention in the 1990s when he ushered in a new genre of painting, “Pop Surrealism,” dragging a host of followers in his wake. He has trumped the initial surrealist strategies by choosing subject matter loaded with cultural connotation. Ryden’s vocabulary ranges from cryptic to cute, treading a fine line between nostalgic cliché and disturbing archetype. Seduced by his infinitely detailed and meticulously glazed surfaces, the viewer is confronted with the juxtaposition of the childhood innocence and the mysterious recesses of the soul. A subtle disquiet inhabits his paintings; the work is achingly beautiful as it

hints at darker psychic stuff beneath the surface of cultural kitsch. In Ryden’s world cherubic girls rub elbows with strange and mysterious figures. Ornately carved frames lend the paintings a baroque exuberance that adds gravity to their enigmatic themes. Complex in its arcane and idiosyncratic subject matter, Ryden’s work can leave no viewer unmoved. Pixit, whose title refers to the Latin term meaning “painted by,” is organized by the themes of Ryden’s major exhibitions—The Meat Show, Bunnies & Bees, The Tree Show, and so on—and includes collected essays by Yoshitomo Nara, Carlo McCormick, and others, and a new essay by culture critic Kristine McKenna. Ryden’s paintings and drawings are reproduced using the finest technique available, and over a dozen of the paintings are foldouts that open to a stag— 66 —

gering 150 cm (59 inches) across. Many books have been published on Mark Ryden before, but none like this large-format monograph, released in a boxed Collector’s Edition of 1,000 numbered copies, each signed by the artist; and also available in an Art Edition of only 50 copies, which come with an artwork. This sweeping retrospective brings together nearly two decade’s worth of Mark Ryden’s paintings and works on paper, broadening the horizons of his uncanny universe and bringing it to the world, one big page at a time.

• Limited Collector’s Edition of 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by the artists. • Two-volume retrospective with 666 photographs of “pretty much everything” that the photographers have been working on for over two decades • Additional reader with interviews and texts about the photographic œuvre of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin

“It is typical of the photographic art of van Lamsweerde and Matadin that they urge their image making to de-stabilise the pristine surfaces expected of consumer culture; to this end they make use, in turn, of the Gothic, inscrutability, androgyny, comedy, eroticism, surrealism, fantasy, montage, cinema, replication, image manipulation, Pop art, fetishism and art historical nuance.” —Michael Bracewell, from the introduction

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin’s work has graced the walls and pages of some of the world’s finest galleries and fashion magazines, and if it is surprising that their photographs easily float between these worlds, it is by virtue of their ease in creating imagery that seeks homes in both culturally elite and mainstream outlets. For some of their photographs, such as their portrait of Björk or campaign for Givenchy, van Lamsweerde and Matadin have
— 68 —

worked in collaboration with the art directors M/M (Paris), who have also designed this sumptuous two-volume retrospective set that looks back at “pretty much everything” that the photographers have been working on for over two decades and has brought them to the forefront in the fields of both art and fashion.

• Why plunging food in ice water doesn’t stop the cooking process • When boiling cooks faster than steaming • Why raising the grill doesn’t lower the heat • How low-cost pots and pans can perform better than expensive ones • Why baking is mostly a drying process • Why deep-fried food tastes best and browns better when the oil is older • How modern cooking techniques can achieve ideal results without the perfect timing or good luck that traditional methods demand.

A revolution is underway in the art of cooking. Just as French Impressionists upended centuries of tradition, Modernist cuisine has in recent years blown through the boundaries of the culinary arts. Borrowing techniques from the laboratory, pioneering chefs at world-renowned restaurants such as elBulli, The Fat Duck, Alinea, and wd~50 have incorporated a deeper understanding of science and advances in cooking technology into their culinary art. The authors and their 20-person team at The Cooking Lab— scientists, inventors, and accomplished cooks in their own right—have achieved astounding new

flavors and textures by using tools such as water baths, homogenizers, and centrifuges, and ingredients such as hydrocolloids, emulsifiers, and enzymes. Modernist Cuisine is a work destined to reinvent cooking. How do you make an omelet light and tender on the outside, but rich and creamy inside? Or French fries with a light and fluffy interior and a delicate, crisp crust that doesn’t go soggy? Imagine being able to encase a mussel in a gelled sphere of its own sweet and briny juice. Or to create a silky-smooth pistachio cream made from nothing more than the nuts themselves.
— 70 —

Modernist Cuisine offers step-by-step, illustrated instructions, as well as clear explanations of how these techniques work. Through thousands of original photographs and diagrams, the lavishly illustrated books make the science and technology of the culinary arts clear and engaging. Stunning new photographic techniques take the reader inside the food to see cooking in action all the way from microscopic meat fibers to an entire Weber grill in cross-section. You will view cooking—and eating—in a whole new light.

Working with magazines including The Face and Arena, designing record covers for major bands such as Depeche Mode, and creating some of the most important new fonts of recent years, he has made his name ubiquitous in his field. Starting 20 years ago,

Brody teamed up with fellow designers to produce FUSE, an experimental design and typeface annual. Each “package” contains a selection of new typefaces (originally on floppy disk, now on CD), as well as posters featuring the fonts and essays on design by leading writers on the subject. Most of the breakthroughs in type

• 187 artists’ portraits • 44 original photos of artists in their studios • 14 essays • 7 fold-outs • 30-page appendix with artists’ biographies, a glossary of key terms and an index of names and works

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) possessed one of the greatest minds of all time; his importance and influence are inestimable. This two-volume, midsize-format comprehensive survey is the most complete book ever made on the subject of this Italian painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, scientist and all-around genius. With huge, full-bleed details of Leonardo’s masterworks, this highly original publication allows the reader to inspect the subtlest facets of his brushstrokes.

Part I explores Leonardo’s life and work in ten chapters. All of his paintings are interpreted in depth, with The Annunciation and The Last Supper featured on large double-spreads. Part II comprises a catalogue raisonné of Leonardo’s paintings, which covers all of his surviving and lost painted works and includes texts describing their states of preservation. Part III contains an extensive catalogue of his drawings (numbering in the thousands, they cannot all be reproduced in one book); 663 are

presented, arranged by category (architecture, technical, anatomical, figures, proportion, cartography, etc).

The story of modern art begins roughly 150 years ago, when painters left their studios to try and catch nature and the quickly changing light en plein aire, only to find that they did not paint more realistically, instead they were pushed toward the fractured colors and fleeting compositions we’ve come to associate with the term impressionism. Once standard academy practice had been overcome, there was no holding back, and in a constant desire to pursue new roads, one style supplanted the next, always

bringing different innovations: after Impressionism, there followed Symbolism, Expressionism, futurism, Surrealism, Dada, Abstract art, Minimal, and Pop. Even in postmodernism and the contemporary works of Koons, Kelley, or Wool, this modernist urge to make something new is still very much alive. This publication concentrates on individual works, each piece breaking some amount of new ground, and with 300 featured pieces by as many artists, this means an average of two game
— 101 —

changers for every year. Each work is accompanied by a text that places it within the larger narrative, introducing the artist and outlining the agenda. Introductions to all the important art movements give the reader a more thorough grounding in the historical developments, but most of all, it is the year-by-year succession of groundbreaking works, both classics and surprising rediscoveries, that tells the story of an art that always thrived on innovation.

Max Beckmann (1884–1950) found his central theme in the loneliness of the twentieth century man, threatened by catastrophe and torn between materialism and freedom of mind and spirit. His early pictures showed the influence of Impressionism, with a preponderance of biblical, historical, and allegorical themes. World War I made a deep impression on him: somewhere between Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), the succinct forms and hard contours in his memorable paintings and graphic works showed man at the

limit of physical and mental endurance. Later, the harshness and severity of his style softened and his colors became more radiant, but the monumentality remained. Theater, circus, and music hall became parables of human existence. Beckmann’s work is concerned with the fundamental conditions of human existence and the tragic entanglement of the human being dependant on the whims of gods, sexuality, and society. His relentless search for knowledge, his uncompromising commitment to the picture, and his belief in the power of its form and color
— 102 —

give his work its distinctive, fascinating character, and have earned him a high-ranking place among the artists of the twentieth century.

This book brings together a vast selection of images by Chinese photographers since 1949, giving readers a visual journey across the great People’s Republic; edited by esteemed photojournalist Liu Heung Shing, longtime Associated Press correspondent and Time magazine contributor. In post-Mao China, late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping urged his one billion countrymen to “seek truth from facts.” Taking its cue from Deng’s overture, China today is the leading economic story of the 21st century. The process

by which China navigated the path from periphery to a central position in world affairs dominates the debate about Asia and China’s relationship to the western world. Pulitzer-winning photojournalist Liu Heung Shing charts the visual history of sixty years of the People’s Republic (1949 to 2008), and along the way aims to illustrate its humanistic course. Via work by 88 Chinese photographers, this collection of images shows how the Chinese people have blossomed in spite of enduring previous decades of extraordinary hardship. When China
— 103 —

opened the curtain at the summer Olympics in 2008 and the world’s focus fell upon Beijing, these photographs served to map out the remarkable road the Chinese had traveled to rejoin the rest of the world. To help place the images in context, also included is a chronology listing all the major political events in China.

“Two beautifully bound, brightly coloured volumes, the pages are packed with vivid photography from streets, gardens and temples across the continent.”
—Sunday Times Travel, London

This round-up of the world’s most exceptional hotels and retreats is packed with awe-inspiring photos and tantalizing descriptions of the world’s greatest getaways. While few will visit them all, this collection provides a dizzying array of exotic destinations for the armchair traveler. Highlights include a California inn where Liberace would have felt right at home, and shabby-chic bungalows on Highway 1 in Big Sur. Choose from luxurious residences nestled on

the Ubud hillside overlooking the Ayung River in Bali, or oceanside bungalows on a Brazilian archipelago. Go camping in “royal style” in the Indian desert, or opt for a luxury tented camp on an island in the best game-viewing location in Botswana. Relax in a hand-woven banda on Zanzibar, a hotel-museum full of contemporary art on the Sicilian coast, or a sumptuous Provençal spa retreat in the south of France.

Zen. Soothing. Mystical. Meditative. All the most serene words in the world couldn’t begin to describe the effect of Asia’s most beautiful interiors. Designing private homes offers architects more freedom than corporate projects to express their ideas and try out new concepts. Conceiving living spaces is not without its own set of challenges, for which architects are forever looking for innovative solutions—rethinking the way we inhabit our home and live our daily lives is all part of the job when designing a house. Nowadays environmental concerns have become crucial in building sustainable structures, changing the playing field quite profoundly. This twovolume publication rounds up 100 of the world’s

most interesting and pioneering homes from the past decade, featuring a host of talents both new and established, including John Pawson, Richard Meier, Shigeru Ban, Tadao Ando, and Zaha Hadid.

Penguin is a celebration of the nature and beauty of penguins as expressed through the exquisite images and unique personal stories of master photographer and naturalist Frans Lanting. In a remarkable portfolio of photographs made during three expeditions to the icy kingdoms of penguins, he reveals both the amazing natural history and the irresistible appeal of the most human of birds. He first traveled to isolated slivers of land on the Falkland Islands to cover the lives of “little penguins”—rock-hoppers, Magellanics, and

gentoos—and then made a rare circumnavigation of South Georgia by yacht, going ashore to camp among colonies of king penguins and capture the summer rush of birds breeding and feeding before the harsh deprivations of winter set in. Finally he flew to the edge of Antarctica and camped on the sea ice for a month to document the epic life story of the emperor penguin, which survives at the outer limits of life. More than 110 photographs illustrate this moving portrayal of the birds many people feel they already know—but will see in a powerful new perspec— 109 —

tive through Frans Lanting’s eyes. “This book is a personal interpretation of the penguins I met, rather than a natural history of all penguins,” Frans Lanting writes. “I wanted to create an impresson of who these penguins are and what they go through. I hope my work will be seen as an homage to the individual within them all."

They’ve been exciting generations of men, on calendars and covers, as centerfolds or even on playing cards: pin-ups. What started as an exercise in oils was soon taken up in various media—pin-up mascots graced the fuselages of American fighters, and became an essential feature of the male world of garages and barracks. And the age of political correctness hasn’t ended their appeal.

This book tells the tale of a genre as utterly American as the paintings of Edward Hopper, describing its origins and development in detail and showcasing the most important artists. With over 900 illustrations, The Great American Pin-Up is a comprehensive study of the genre.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes through architects’ minds when they design buildings, you’ll be happy to know that there’s no shortage of brilliant reading material to satisfy your curiosity. Wading through the archives at your local library may prove fruitful to your endeavor, but it won’t give you the instant gratification that Architecture Theory will. This book brings together all of the most

important and influential essays about architecture written since the Renaissance, copiously illustrated and neatly organized chronologically by country. From Alberti and Palladio to Le Corbusier and Koolhaas, the best treatises by architecture’s greatest masters are gathered here, each accompanied by an essay discussing its historical context and significance. This is the all-in-one, must-have

“An intimate stare into both antique and contemporary buildings that tell the stories of Cuban society, culture and industry.”
—Trace, New York

With his smooth, warm, red face which radiated light in all directions, Chairman Mao Zedong was a fixture in Chinese propaganda posters produced between the birth of the People’s Republic in 1949 and the early 1980s. These infamous posters were, in turn, central fixtures in Chinese homes, railway stations, schools, journals, magazines, and just about anywhere else where people were likely to see them. Chairman Mao, portrayed as a stoic superhero (a.k.a. the Great Teacher, the Great Leader, the Great Helmsman, the Supreme Commander), appeared in all kinds of situations (inspecting

factories, smoking a cigarette with peasant workers, standing by the Yangzi River in a bathrobe, presiding over the bow of a ship, or floating over a sea of red flags), flanked by strong, healthy, ageless men and “masculinized” women and children wearing baggy, sexless, drab clothing. The goal of each poster was to show the Chinese people what sort of behavior was considered morally correct and how great the future of Communist China would be if everyone followed the same path toward utopia by uniting together. Combining fact and fiction in a way
— 112 —

typical of propaganda art, these posters exuded positive vibes and seemed to suggest that Mao was an omnipresent force that would accompany China to happiness and greatness. This book brings together a selection of colorful propaganda artworks and cultural artifacts from photographer Michael Wolf’s vast collection of Chinese propaganda posters, many of which are now extremely rare. Michael Wolf lived in Hong Kong for eight years and works as a photographer for Stern. He collects posters and photographs from the period of the Cultural Revolution till today.

Celebrating the relics of Cuba’s revolutionary glory days, this book explores everything from the kinds of interiors seen in Buena Vista Social Club to top-notch luxury hotels and cultural heritage sites. Via a diverse selection of Havana homes, hotels, gathering places, and more, Inside Havana takes you deep into the heart of the city.

Highlights include: • traditional time-worn homes bearing the patina of generations of habitation • Modernist houses—including one by Richard Neutra—and artists’ homes • Cuba’s best eclectic 20th century mansions • Partagás cigar factory, one of Havana’s oldest and finest • the baroque building Palacio de los Capitanes Generales • the spectacular and futuristic Mario Gironadesigned ice cream haven that is Havana’s most popular hangout
— 113 —

• the bars Ernest Hemingway frequented, the hotel where he stayed between 1932 and 1939, and the estate near Havana he purchased in 1940, where he wrote The Old Man and the Sea • Mafia casino hotels

Piranesi The Complete etchings Luigi Ficacci Hardcover, 2 vols. in slipcase, format: 24 x 30.5 cm (9.4 x 12 in.), 792 pp. english/german/French edition 978–3–8365–3196–2 $ 59.99 / CAD 64.99

Inspired by a babysitter he surprised in front of the bathroom mirror shooting pictures of herself with his Polaroid, photographer Uwe Ommer decided to put together a book of erotic self-portraits by inexperienced photographers. Arming participants with cameras and basic technical instructions, Ommer asked them to photograph themselves in any way they pleased—liberated, so to speak, from the voyeuristic eye of the photographer. Some chose to use

mirrors as they captured their portraits, while others braved the camera without the help of their reflections. While many subjects required no intervention by Ommer, for others he acted as “ghost photographer,” helping them with the lighting and setup; in both cases, the models were free to indulge their inspirations in any ways they pleased—from sexy and provocative to romantic to simply being themselves. The cast of self-portraitists includes a wide
— 114 —

range of personalities, from students to artists, actors, stylists, dancers, models, musicians, teachers, and more. This highly original book gives us a rare glimpse at the way everyday women see themselves—or wish they did.

“Piranesi was as savage as Salvator Rosa, fierce as Michelangelo, and exuberant as Rubens… he has imagined scenes that would startle geometry and exhaust the Indies to realize.” —Horace Walpole One the greatest architectural artists of all time, and certainly the most famous copper engraver of the 18th century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) is most known for his terrifyingly

original series of etchings of labyrinthine and megalomaniac prisons, Carceri d’Invenzione. In his own day, he was most celebrated for his Vedute, 137 etchings of ancient and modern Rome; so renowned were these startling and dramatic chiaroscuro images, imbued with Piranesi’s romantic feeling for archaeological ruins, that they formed the mental picture of Rome for generations after. Indeed, Piranesi could be said to have shaped a whole strain of
— 115 —

contemporary architecture, as well as the wider visualization of antiquity itself. In our time, he has had a direct influence on writers such as Borges and Kafka and on filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Greenaway. Anyone who contemplates Piranesi’s etchings will confront the existential nightmare of human existence and its infinite mysteries.
