“Think Inside the Box” - Shop Local Todd County!
Imagine a box where just a few people stood inside. Now, think outside the box, and at the top there are over twice as many people there. To the left of the box there are 6 times as many people. To the right of the box there are twice as many people. Go farther right and there are 9 times as many outside the box. At the bottom right of the Helping our Businesses and Community Prosper box, there are 4 times as many. Directly below the bottom of the box, there are about 14 times as many people than the box has inside! There is a place in Kentucky shaped like a rectangular box, do you know this place? The population around it employs 80 percent of its working people. Only 20 percent stay inside this rectangular box to work. Although it is a blessing to be nestled in the midst of larger areas, this can be a curse for the box as well. Imagine if each person inside the box decided they wanted to have more jobs at home (80/20 rather than 20/80), more things to do, more places to shop, increased wages, more public services from increased revenue, and more opportunity to give. Each and every person makes a difference. Collectively people can move mountains. Each person does not deliberately cause a business to close, or intentionally keep a new business from opening, but by showing indifference and not caring where their money is spent, each person’s purchasing power has the same effect. What if it were possible to double, triple, or even further increase the commerce inside our community? What if our kids could dream of doing something here, and at least learn how to work here, instead of dreaming of being somewhere else or just hanging out here still dreaming. Other towns outside our area are not dependent on our dollars to keep them going, but our area can grow tremendously if each person consciously shopped at home. Heightened awareness of where we spend will make the difference. Towns in Kentucky like Bellevue, Danville, and Henderson have tried “shop local” campaigns, and the results were amazing. This year the Todd County Community Alliance and the Guthrie Partners for Main Street are working with one common cause: to encourage everyone to shop at Todd County businesses. Both groups are working on events and projects to not only provide things to do for our citizens, but to bring visitors to our community to open their eyes to the unique and wonderful businesses our county (the rectangular box) has to offer. This year, the Alliance is starting a “Shop Local” campaign. The first Friday of every month beginning Friday, May 4th will be “Shop Local Friday.” Look for all kinds of shop local contests and events focused on shopping local. While this will only be a one day event each month, the most important thing for us is to do is try harder to spend our money at home and shop local every day. Because, each dollar that stays in our county keeps multiplying. Think inside the box.

4-H Camp: A Great Summer Tradition By: Lee Ann McCuiston, 4-H Youth Development Agent As the final bell rings in Todd County schools for another year, over 125 young people between the ages of 9 and 14 years will continue the learning process through summer 4-H camp. Close to 3,000 young people will be attending the West Kentucky 4-H camp in Dawson Spring this summer, while Todd County campers will occupy the camp week of July 16th – 20th along with Butler, Logan and Hickman Counties. 4-H Camp provides young people with a chance to learn lifetime hobbies. Some will learn to swim, paddle a canoe or shoot a bow and arrow. Crafts, nature study, fishing, horseback riding, rock climbing and shooting sports also are a part of the long list of activities available to keep campers involved throughout the day. Campers can catch everything from fish to butterflies; identify trees and critters during nature hikes; learn to swim; use a canoe; take part in shooting sports; make arts and crafts and participate in challenge courses. Youth will also have the chance to sing and dance, make new friends and have fun all at West Kentucky 4-H Camp. West Kentucky 4-H Camp is located on 450 acres near Dawson Springs. It has a state-of-the-art challenge course program for exciting and effective leadership and team-building training. The course has seven high elements and twelve low elements. The camp has a 14-acre lake for fishing, canoeing and wetlands studies. It has facilities for archery, riflery, swimming, basketball, softball and soccer and an outstanding horse facility offering horse back riding and horsemanship. 4-H camp applications will be mailed out to 4-H members through the April newsletter. Camp promotions are taking place in the schools in April. The due date to apply for summer 4-H camp is set for June 22nd. Adult counselors over 18 years old should apply at the County Extension Office by June 15th as well. Scholarships for lower income families are available. A scholarship form must be submitted by June 22nd along with a $25 down payment. Local businesses, churches, organizations and individuals are encouraged to support the camp scholarship fund by making a donation to the Todd County 4-H Council no later than June 22nd. Shop Local Fridays—Special Promotions and Events
Of course the Alliance encourages everyone to shop local every day. But, starting in May, on the first Friday of every month, the Community Alliance encourages everyone to participate in Shop Local Friday. Find a local restaurant, local hardware store or local business and buy your products from them rather than going out of town and giving money to other communities. We all might be amazed at what a difference we can make in our community if we pick one or more local business on Shop Local Friday and spend $20.00. Let’s all make an effort to support our businesses and our community by shopping and buying local!

Just for Shop Local Fridays, the cities of Elkton, Guthrie and Trenton will have designated spaces for people to set up and sell fresh produce and other items from 3 PM until dark. Anyone interested in setting up, please call Elkton City
Hall, 265-9877; Guthrie City Hall, 483-2511; or Trenton City Hall, 466-3332 for more information. Also, many of our local businesses plan to stay open late and have specials. For example, The 2 Kates in Elkton plans to stay open late and have a special dinner and music. Several local businesses in Trenton, including Quilt and Sew at Golden Threads, plan to stay open later, giving you more time to visit and shop local. If your business would like to plan something special or stay open late, please contact the Todd County Welcome Center at 265-7070 and we will include you in our upcoming promotions! Visit our website often for a list of participating businesses.

Free GED testing and National Career Readiness Certificate Assessments Offered
Two important education and workforce credential tests will be free to eligible Kentuckians on a first-come, first-served basis through June 30 or until funds are expended. GED testing fees and assessment fees to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is currently being paid, using federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) incentive funding. Normally the GED testing fee is $60 and the NCRC fee is $105. “We are pleased to offer free testing because it will help many Kentuckians re-energize their education and careers,” said Council on Postsecondary Education President Bob King. “For many Kentuckians, earning a GED is a necessary first step toward college and a career with a family-sustaining wage.” The GED tests provide adults who did not finish high school with the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school level academic knowledge and skills. Free GED classes are available through the Todd County Adult Education located in the Annex Building behind Todd County Central High School. “The current economy is tough for everyone but has an even greater impact if you are looking for work and do not have your high school diploma,” said Reecie D. Stagnolia, vice president, Kentucky Adult Education. “We see this as a way to help the individual student and to help increase educational attainment in Kentucky at the same time.” In addition to the free GED testing, the NCRC is a national certification that indicates work readiness by administering three Work-Keys® assessments: applied mathematics, locating information and reading for information. These specific workplace skills are needed in 77 percent of all jobs profiled for Work-Keys® testing. “NCRC is the quantifiable tool that allows employers and economic developers to measure terms such as ‘we need a qualified workforce’ into a credential that means the same thing in Bowling Green, Ohio, Bowling Green, Virginia, and Bowling Green, Kentucky,” said Beth Brinly, commissioner of the Department of Workforce Investment. Eligible individuals can obtain free NCRC testing through the Todd County Adult Education Center. This offer is time and space limited, so those interested should call 265-9424 to schedule the tests.
