CRITERION A: INVESTIGATION
My task is to create a short film in order to demonstrate my ability with the software Sony Vegas, using camera equipment and audio recording equipment, for example a boom and a tripod camera. I should also learn about editing films and making them as enjoyable and professional as possible. We have only one limitation with our short film; it must not contain spoken dialogue, this makes sure that we are focusing more on the film editing that the story line. Films have become a large part of the world we live in, they can be found anywhere in different sizes and forms, including the media, cinemas and our televisions. They have a very large effect and can be very influential on the world and people’s perception of it. Films can be a great source for propaganda, general information and entertainment. This is why it’s important that we learn about what goes into creating a decent film and how it can be done.

C AMERA ANGLE AND SHOT RESEARCH:
Shot sizes: There are a number of shot sizes these include XLS (extra long shot), LS (long shot), MLS (middle long shot), MS (middle shot), MCU (middle close up), CU (close up), BCU (big close up), XCU (extra close up).

Shot Angles: Low angle shot is from a low angle, an eyelevel shot is taken when the camera is at eye level. A high angle shot is from above the object. A worms eye view is a shot taken from the perspective of something very low down. A canted shot is a shot with a twisted angle, finally a birds eye shot is from above the object.

Camera and Lens Movement: Pan left and pan right, is moving the camera both to the left and right of the object (around). Crab left and Crab right Is keeping the camera angle the same, but moving it on a straight line either left or right. Track out and track in, is simply moving the camera on a straight line closer and further away from the target.

Zoom out and in is similar but utilizes the lens on the camera. Ped up and ped down, is simply moving up and down the character. Tilt up and tilt down is when the camera remains in the same place but is tilted up and down the object being filmed.

FILM SHOOTING AND EDITING RESEARCH:
In order to become more acquainted with the art of shooting a film, we recreated the opening scene of Bladerunner. We looked at recording with a camera, using a tri-pod to keep it steady and still. We also practiced using a boom and recording audio.

To edit it we are using Sony’s Vegas Studio

When opening the software it was important to input the correct information, for example: We are in Europe, and video setting is 1920x1080 and we saved it in our folders. Keyboard Controls Enter S U Start / Stop Split Unlink the audio Operation

SHORT FILM ANALYSIS:
The Black Hole:

The black hole is a short piece of film media, without the use of dialogue the producer manages to portray an interesting and exciting short film. The setup begins with the actor standing over a copying machine, the conflict arrives when the actor discovers a black whole piece of paper, the plot remains unresolved as his greed results in his entrapment in a safe. The director makes use of: Worm eye view shots Interesting audio choice, changes in sound to add effect Interesting and enthralling story line Relevant morale message

DENOTATION:
Office worker using the copying machine. Discovers the black hole allowing him to reach through things. Breaks into office and attempts to steal the money from the safe. Becomes trapped.

CONNOTATION:
The office worker isn’t happy with his job and is probably working late. The office workers greed caused him to suffer.

EVALUATION OF RESEARCH
My research will help me create my product in a number of different ways, even though i’m neither a cameraman or the director my research on camera angles and shots allows me to add positive feedback to my group and have some say in the way in which it will be shot and the camera angles that I would prefer for my final cut. The tape analysis also serves its purpose in a similar way, it gave me a template and some examples of shots which will help me when it comes to both shooting and editing my final movie.

STORY BOARD 1:
MEETING OBJECTIVES :
The first objective is hard to gauge whether it will be met, as it is measured in time. If I was to guess I don’t think it would be met by my first storyboard, as it is relatively short and probably less than 4 minutes. The second objective would be met well as the storyboard was written around a guide based on the narrative structure. It isn’t easy to say how well my transitions will be implemented from my storyboard, making my third criteria harder to judge. The fourth objective is met well as the individual scenes do show different camera angles. My film will hopefully appeal to students, making them my target audience.

STORY BOARD 2:
MEETING OBJECTIVES :
This idea will most likely meet my first objective, as it is fairly detailed and has a number of different scenes, meaning it would most probably last longer than 4 minutes. It will also contain a significant narrative structure, as it has a clear setup, conflict and finally some sort of resolution. Both objectives 3 and 4 are difficult to judge as they will be defined by the way I choose to edit it, and the way the cameraman decides to shoot it. If this film was to be made, it would probably appeal to young people/ students in general.

JUSTIFICATION OF CHOICE:
For my screenplay submission, surprising I decided to choose my first screenplay, this might not be the obvious choice but I feel the story line is more interesting and it would be more interesting to try and shoot. Even though the second story board may meet my objectives in theory, I think it would be very easy to adapt my first one to suit them in a more interesting and enjoyable way. I also need to bear in mind why my classmates would decide to choose my screenplay and I think using the first storyboard would increase my chances a lot of it getting chosen. For these reasons and the lack of an interesting story in my second storyboard I have chosen the first to one to write my screenplay on.

SLOW PAN. Students looking bored. CAMERA FOCUS’S ON MAIN ACTOR Actor 1 Looks bored, staring at the clock. CLOSE UP OF CLOCK TICKING TOWARDS THE HOUR. THE BELL RINGS. 3 INT. LOCKER HALLWAY – BETWEEN CLASSES

STEADY SHOT. Students cram around the hallway attempting to go to their lockers. Begins to settle. MID LONG SHOT. Main actor 1 walks down the corridor as it begins to empty. Actor 1 Walks towards locker and kneels to open it. CLOSE UP. Actor 1 opens his locker to hear a whooshing sound, quickly snapping it shut. Actor 1 Eyes wide with terror. MID LONG SHOT. DIG SITE-LATE AFTENOON As the sun is starting to dip over the horizon A completed wheelbarrow stands amid the 2 holes that have now been completed Both people look satisfied with what they created and stand proudly Side by side, they turn to each other No one indicates anything of what they are thinking After a tense silence They break into smiles They both shake hands and turn to face the wheelbarrow They each grab one handle of the wheelbarrow They walk off towards the sun dipping over the horizon.

GROUP GANTT CHART:

FILMING RESOURCES:
Shovel – This counts as a prop and will be used in the recording. This will be our main prop as the film is based on us digging. Wheelbarrow – This will be obtained with my acting partner, as we only need one between us; this is also part of the film. Green screen – We will only be using this as a group, depending on the directors decision we may need to use it.

EDITING RESOURCES:
Sony Vegas Editing software – This is necessary for my movie editing, it has a number of features that normal software doesn’t, including a film footage sequencer, transitions, effects and audio editing.

Computer iMac – I will be using this to edit my final film. It is necessary as it has a fast processor, meaning it will be able to process large amounts of footage and a large screen, making editing a lot more efficient. Keyboard – This will be used to enter any numbers or titles in my editing stages Mouse – I need to use a mouse in order to navigate the software which I will be using.

EVALUATION OF PLAN
My initial decomposition wasn’t successful as my role in the film wasn’t directing, I hadn’t written the screenplay so it wasn’t clear what the best choice in order of the shots would be. We created a group Gantt chart based on a much better structured decomposition, this proved invaluable in our production stages, it gave us a general guideline within which we could swap things around and fit it to suit our purpose. We were quite careful to be finished with what was suggested in our Gantt chart at the end of each session. The resources list also proved to be very useful, it made clear which props and tools we would need (individually) and made each session start very smoothly as all the group members knew which tools to get and where.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
I think if I were to do this project again, I would try and get more shots in; this would allow me to have created a better and longer final piece. I didn’t meet my first objective because of time constraints and a considerable amount of time spent learning to use the equipment and becoming comfortable with acting. Shooting more footage would have given me more to work with and a lot more freedom when it came to editing the film

LIKELY IMPACT ON LIFE, SOCIETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
If my movie was shown to a large group of people, it is unlikely that it would have any affect at all on their lives, the society in which they live in or the environment. My film wasn’t intended to have any deep morale message, but if it did it would serve as a reminder that working together can accomplish a task much faster. If this message was clearer it would remind people of companionship and the importance of it.

PERSONAL EVALUATION
C RITERION A – I NVESTIGATE
In my investigate section I defined my goal and completed the research I needed to completed my goal. This research was very important as it saved time when it came to the create stages, it was also important that my goal was defined this gives me one clear objective that needed to be completed. I thought my tape analysis went well and proved to be quite useful as it gave me an idea of how long my film should be the format of my film and the pace at which the storyline evolves. If I was to do this stage again I would focus more time and thought on the objectives, these served to be much more important than previously thought.

C RITERION B - D ESIGN
I came up with three possible solutions for my previously defined goal, and then narrowed them down to two possible storyboards and finally choosing between these two to make one final screenplay. I did this, this way as it forced me to come up with new ideas even if they weren’t the first one that came to mind. Because I had done this it gave me a lot of opportunities to mix and alter my ideas when it came to the next stage (e.g. storyboard or screenplay), this was very helpful as it meant I wasn’t limited to my first idea.

C RITERION C – P LAN
The planning section was a chance for our group to plan our time; we had a limitation of 6 hours (and out of class time if needed) so it was important that this was done successfully. We had two sets of decomposition; I thought the group decomposition was the most effective. It was quite difficult to stick to our Gantt chart but it was useful nonetheless. Next time I would have more experience in using the equipment and working in a group, I would probably be able to gauge the time that each shot would take and be able to make a more accurate Gantt chart.

C RITERION D – C REATE
The create section of this process was possibly the most challenging and rewarding; in this phase we shot all the footage we would need to create our film. I thought there were times when it was slightly

disorganized but this was inevitable as we all had very little experience, as we progressed and neared the end of our time restraints we all pulled together quite well and completed the necessary footage. I enjoyed this part of the process very much if I was to do it again, I would be sure to focus more initially and be as organized as possible, this would have allowed me to gain more footage, which would have helped me overall.

C RITERION E – E VALUATION
My evaluation served an important purpose for me as well; It gave me a chance to judge how successful I had been throughout the rest of my process. I think evaluations are important in the whole design cycle, it’s a chance for me to properly look at what I’ve made and critique myself, it’s a very introspective process and is necessary for improvement in the future. In this case specifically, my evaluation served no greater purpose than to help me next time I create a media piece, this was unfortunate and isn’t always the case with evaluations.
